This academy has become a really special place for our family. My wife knew Professor Beto many years before I ever stepped onto the mats, and now it has come full circle. I train here, my kids train here, and I've even gotten my cousin to join. What really separates this academy is the culture. The people are top notch. There's no ego or unnecessary tough-guy attitude. Everyone is there to learn, improve, help each other, and build each other up. That means even more to me now that my kids train here. I know they're surrounded by great instructors and good people in a competitive, family-friendly environment. This is an excellent class that my granddaughter loves. She is very focused, and the two instructors, Beto and Liz, are professional and engaged. They use effective techniques to help the children maintain their focus, and the kids are having fun while they learn. It's a continuous experience. My 2 older kids (age 9 and 5) did a trial class AND THEY LOVED IT!!! They were definitely sore the next day. I had technically issues signing my kids up for a trial class online, so I sent an email. Mr. Beto Vilanova responded immediately, apologized and was able to sign them up on his end. Come trial day, our entire family of 5 walks in and we were warmly greeted by Mr. Vilanova. He quickly grabbed gi's for my kids to put on. I was very impressed by that! (We tried other places and they didn't offer this). As soon as my kids put on the gi's I saw a change in their demeanor--they were ready to rock and roll!! Entire coaching staff are great!! They're stern which teaches kids respect, and they're patient making sure each child is attended to--whether it be correcting their form or encouraging them. Absolutely the best detailed instruction in the art of Jiu Jitsu. This type of instruction and encouragement has made me a champion at several tournaments here in California and Nevada. Professor Beto Vilanova has also helped me reach several goals... biggest one is weight loss. Drove by this place for an entire year and then my friend Pat finally convinced me to take a free class. Professor Beto insured me that beginning students take everything at their own pace to reduce injuries and maximize education of the art. This is my opinion on why this gym deserves a 5/5 rating. I have been training under Professor Beto since February of 2014 and decided to join after having been a long time fan of the UFC. I had always wanted to do either wrestling or Jiu Jitsu but felt that I had missed my opportunity. Since the first time I walked in and met Professor Beto, and because of the friendliness of him and his students, I have always felt welcomed. This is a friendly , ego-free, bully-free, non-intimidating gym in which you and your children (even as young as 3) can learn realistic self defense. The techniques are presented clearly and in an easy to understand way. Be sure to not mistake the friendliness for incompetence because Professor Beto has proven himself in some of highest level tournaments as a BJJ blackbelt. A true sign of a legitimate instructor is that they are never afraid to roll with their students. He regularly rolls (spars) with his advanced students and it helps make everyone better. A good instructor doesn't just talk the talk but they walk the walk. Finally, Professor Beto and his students have become friends of mine. A true sign of a martial artist is not just how you act on the mat, but off the mat as well. When you come to Vilanova BJJ you are going to be with all around cool, down to earth people. read more
