I love going to this place. I love the food, the atmosphere, and the family that owns it. I went with a friend this past Friday to get some lunch. I sat down at the bar and Sierra/Bubba was working. She came up asked for what we wanted to drink. I said water and my friend ordered a Malibu pineapple. Then I hear the bartender say... do you really think it's a good idea for you to be here? I was confused at first not knowing what to say in response. Then she goes on to say that she doesn't want to start her shift like this. That I had mentally abused her nephew who is like a son to her. I did not know what to say in response but started tearing up. Sierra continued and said she was not going to serve us and that the restaurant was her nephew's place. I had no say to anything and didn't want to make things worse. I know she's worked there for some time but I had never thought that I would be talked to like this especially upon entering with my friend! Now I don't know when I will ever be able to return but I know I don't want to be ridiculed like I had Friday. Went to the Villa for a Christmas party and ate downstairs in their wine room. Absolutely beautiful with all the wine bottles against the walls--even the ceiling was painted with grape vines. I love wine so this was the perfect room for me. The wine list was pretty extensive. I'd say about 20 wines by the glass and then another hundred or so bottle selections. I took the waiter's suggestion and had a glass of the riesling. Highly recommend it. It went well with our first course--the cheese antipasto. The next course was their house salad. The dressing was sweet and very good. After that I had the sirloin. It was a pretty large piece of meat and very easy to cut. (well, they did give me this machete looking knife to do the job.) The only complaint I had was that the side of corn on the plate was luke warm. Other than that, it was wonderful. Definitely order the sirloin. The waiter, once again, paired a nice glass of wine for me. I think it was the zinfandel. Everyone in the party had a good time. The service was excellent. The food and wine were delicious. I can't really say how expensive it was because the company paid the bill, but I'll definitely be back to find out. read more

OMG My family and i are addicted to the new and improved macri's!!!! They brought together an amazing menu with all the old favorites. I must say being a business owner it is hard to make the public happy. Even though the whole "old" deli menu is not available in print, you are allowed to ask and I DO RECIEVE Items and sandwhiches off the old menu from the university park drive location!!!!!!! Its amazing what you can accomplish by opening your mouth and inquiring :) FYI: They still have the 34 oz. FROSTY MUGS!!!! And lots more on draft also. They were smart to downsize the beer menu and eliminate the microbrews because of shelf life. And they have a full bar now so i can get a martini or mixed drink :) A good change from the old place. Appetizers!!!!! Galore, To clarify on the other yelp!!! It wasnt chicken TACOS it was chicken NACHOS!!! And they are fantastic with the CRAB TOPPED PORTOBELLO!!!!!! This restaurant has everything to make anyone happy, my grandfather has pasta while my grandma is amazed at their chicken marsala. My husband never goes wrong with the Gyro's and I am enthralled with the Sirlion Steak... OMG Its the Best Honestly. The place is super big with many different rooms to choose from. Our waitress was very friendly and attentive throughout the night. I got the caprese chicken for dinner and mozzarella sticks for an appetizer and both were fantastic! Will definitely be back! read more

I've been here a few times with big groups (visiting families, etc.) and we've always had a great time. The restaurant is nice and has good service, but the food is mediocre. It's good but not great. We had a reservation for 7 people at 6:00 to celebrate a birthday. We arrived a few minutes before and when we checked in they said that they would have to set up the table. Yet they called the day before to confirm the reservation! The waitress was very mediocre...and the place was extremely noisy! The food was fair at best. Nice atmosphere for a drink. I have eaten here over 50 time throughout the years. To be 100% honest I only come here because it's a good place to come to Meetup With Friends. I have never once been impressed by anything I've eaten. And I'm going to talk just talking about impressed I'm talking about it's so lackluster the food. There's no creativity. Frozen ravioli from a good supplier though so I will admit that's probably one of the best things on the menu. Are you thinking Italian restaurant would have more pasta choices. You basically have a choice of your pasta and choice of your sauce. Tonight I ask if they could just take some shrimp and sauteed in garlic in a little white wine and then add some vodka sauce to the pan answer with penne pasta. What I got was penne with vodka sauce with some grilled shrimp on top I believe it was about 5 small grilled shrimp and they charged me $9 extra. They they said they can make it how I asked but they didn't even try. My guess is the shrimp are grilled ahead of time and that's the only thing they have. One time I asked for a chicken parmesan which is on the menu to be put on a bread and had a chicken parm sandwich that was great. That's about the only thing I can remember ever eating that I thought was really good. I've had there Italian beef sandwich which is okay. But nothing spectacular. I knew I was coming here for dinner tonight and I actually was thinking maybe I'll stop by Parisi's and eat first. The way you have to look at this place is it's gone Italian name but it's not really true Italian menu. There's nothing on this menu that anyone in a true Italian family would eat in their own home. Maybe pesto. So I will give them two stars because of the food. But for the atmosphere I would give them four stars maybe even five stars. It's a great place to go for a drink but maybe skip the food if you truly desiring a really good meal. The food will due in a pinch if you are hungry. Seven of us enjoyed a wonderful dinner on a Friday night. The service was good and the food even better. I ordered the butternut squash ravioli and it was amazing. My husband had a Cajun shrimp salad that he enjoyed. Everyone was part of the clean plate club and the kids loved the gelato. The one negative is that the adults were asked for ID when ordering alcohol. My 78 year old mother was not amused. The server did not even offer an explanation (e.g. It's restaurant policy). We've tried several times to give this place another shot, but the food is always mediocre, the service just OK, and the layout of this place is absurd. The old Macri's Deli was a local staple. The sports bar area is poorly thought out. Too bright, quiet, and usually empty. The menu is nothing special. I miss the old Macri's Deli days. The layout of this place is strange. Like the architect was drunk when it was drawn up. There's no flow, rhyme, or reason, and seems tacky. All the money dumped into this place was spent on naked angel statues, pavers, and hallways. wow... not had anything this bad in quite a while. The sausages in the soup were some pre-made little smokies. Not at all what I would expect in an Italian restaurant. My wife ordered the Sonoma pasta. it was literally swimming in oil. Flat, no flavor. Pushed it to the side of the table - waiter knew exactly what the problem was. "What's the matter, kind of bland?" He then stated that 3 out of 4 times he serves that dish, it get returned. I got scallops. Would have been nice to know they were served with rice (menu did not reveal that). I don't do rice and bread at the same meal, and I already ate the almost stale bread. I got the 6 most flavorless scallops of my life. If we had not sent back one meal, mine would have gone next. But, nice decor - even a bit "over the top". Upon entry, the hostess station was empty. After watching folks walk right by us, we ventured down to the bar area, where we called someone out of the kitchen to help us. That should have clued us to run... and not look back. read more

This was a very pretty restaurant. Pretty looks, which were very deceiving. We had a reservation last Saturday night. They made us wait anyway, and when they finally sat us we walked through a mostly empty restaurant to be seated in a section chock full of teeny-boopers out to eat before prom. It took 25 minutes of waiting for us to loose out tempers slightly before flagging down a waitress and asking to be seen. She sent out waiter over about 5-10 minutes after that, at which time we put in drinks, appetizers and dinner orders. 20 more minutes rolls by, without having been checked on again, and we waive down another waitress (our waiter hadn't been back since bringing drinks). She goes after our order, to find that our dinner was on the way out shortyl. No appetizers had been put in by our waiter. When confronted by my in-laws about this he asked who we 'had had that conversation with' becuase we didn't place appetizer orders with him. That was when we just asked for a manager. The manager arrived shortly after our meals, and amidst a really poor apology he offered us--nothing. Not a comped meal for the porr service, not 10-20% off, not a thing. Later the waiter braved the table and the wither looks of my sister and mother in law to ask if we would like a free dessert. We declined. We'll also decline to ever go to this restaurant again. read more

We tried this twice. The first time, we had pasta. The red sauce is a color rather than a flavor. Disappointing for a $17 chicken parm. We returned for a late lunch. The Philly cheese steak appears to be steak-ums and was served luke-warm (as were the fries). Arby's French dip is infinitely cheaper and served hotter. Was told by the owner to come by and try the food. Just a tip...... If you own a restaurant and have crappy service, don't invite people to come by. Only 5 other tables and we never ate. Waited 50 minutes and never even got our appetizer (waitress swore 3 times she was bringing it right out). Two other tables who arrived and were seated after us received their dinner. The waitress acted offended that we were leaving. They could have good food, but don't feel like being the first in line yet last to be served in order to try it. UGH! I went back to ND for a football game in search of my old stomping grounds, Macri's, and I was saddened to find out the owner moved the location from University Drive. I called 411 and learned that the owner had only moved Macri's. Well, when we arrived at Villa Macri about the only thing that was the same was the mozzarella sticks, breadsticks, and Godfather sandwich. Don't get me wrong--I would drive 100 miles to eat those mozzarella sticks but Macri's had officially gone upscale on me and I didn't like it. What happened to the deli menu, wooden booths, and 32 oz. frosty mug beers? Yes, they still have that room in the front of the restaurant but I am officially sad because they did away with so many menu items. Like I always say, don't mess with a good thing. I guess I have to go back to Bloomington to go to Macri's. sigh. read more

I am a fan of the place in terms of food and beer selection. The menu ranks among the better Italian menus in the South Bend area. All is well prepared and presented. On the negative side, it is a little pricey for the modest amount of food on the plate. The bottled beer selection is remarkable. So remarkable in fact that I fear that the inventory doesn't turn fast enough to keep fresh beer on the shelves. Much of the beer comes from micro breweries and, although good (when fresh) is not popular enough to sell well. The grandiosity of the beer selection is representative of the grandiosity of the building and, I fear, of the owner's vision. The building is huge and its architecture somewhat flamboyant with vaulted ceilings and magnificent wood and marble (like) trim. I personally can't imaging being able to turn enough diners and drinkers to pay for all that square footage. Enjoy the vision. It may not last. read more

Mixed reviews about VM. The bar is beautiful, hip and happening. Great drink menu with lots of selections. Appetizers are hit and miss. First time we ordered calamari it was crisp and delicious. Last time it was chewy and not well cooked. We enjoy stopping from time to time for cocktails but we recently had dinner here and it was just "so so". Ordered my usual Dirty Martini and it arrived half full. When I commented to the waitress she was very indifferent and commented "that's the usual pour" and walked away. Food was marginal and very slow to come out. Guess that's what we get for ordering steaks from an italian restaurant. After our meal we went to the bar and I ordered another martini that was as it should be, poured nearly to the rim. I think in the future we will stick to visiting the bar and dine elsewhere. read more

Not so good. They charged $16 for a chicken marsala that consisted of a tiny unseasoned piece of chicken and tons of potatoes (also unseasoned). The meal came with a salad that was untossed- all accouterments were on the side as was the dressing. If I don't want an item in my salad or my dressing on the side, I will tell you; if I'm paying for a salad I want it tossed- I don't have salad tongs to toss it with at the table. Owners are great people, but unfortunately, I'm not there to chat with the owners. I'm there to eat. $14 for a strawberry chicken salad that isn't even tossed. You have to toss it yourself. Not only that, but it's not bigger than a side salad. I've never sat down with anyone to eat who has raved about their food. If you are looking for "the old Macri's" you are going to be disappointed. Which is too bad because this is a great Italian restaurant. The salads you start with are delicious, make sure you get the house dressing - pomegranate balsamic. We have had many excellent appetizers. The phyllo mozzarella is yummy as are the mussels (best in the area!). Tonight we had chicken parmigiana and it did not disappoint. And the wine list is exceptional considering the prices. Saturday special - $10 off any bottle of wine over $35. You can't beat it. If you come for the Italian food and skip the bar food and sandwiches you will be pleased. read more

I echo what all of the other reviewers have said. The mediocre food and service at this restaurant does not live up to the beautiful decor and atmosphere. I have been there three times over the past two years and left wishing I had gone to Olive Garden instead each time. Macris used to be a South Bend staple. Ordered a pasta dish. Very bland and not much flavor. Tasted like Ragu brand spaghetti sauce over my noodles. The mini meatballs tasted like they were the frozen kind and they were bland and mushy. Basically a Fazoli's with a much higher price. Wouldn't consider this true Italian food. read more

We will not be back. Two years ago I promised I'd never return, as I was charged $12 for what was clearly a frozen pizza. I decided to give them another chance tonight, and, before I was given my main course, I noticed the following problems: -No silverware or napkins on the table (didn't get any until our appetizers were getting cold) -Empty soap dispenser in the men's room -Leaking ceiling in the lady's room -Ten minutes after I ordered, I was informed that, though it is still on the menu, the dish I ordered is no longer available. -The dish I asked for instead, the Villa Alfredo, is not worth the $18 I paid for it. If I bought it as a TV dinner I would have found it acceptable, but I only ate about a third of it before I gave up. The meatballs on it were OK. -The service is slow, and while she wasn't rude, she also seemed unconcerned with our experience. -The decor is kitschy and overstated. I suggest going anywhere else: this place is not worth your time or money. read more

Ever since Macri's moved to Villa Macri I have been disappointed. The food is the same, which is to say it's just kind of so so. Not to say that it is bad it is just nothing special. The building is just FAR too large. There is something cozy and intimate about being in a crowded restaurant. We recently hosted 50 people for a rehearsal dinner in the Villa Room on the top floor. The room was perfect and beautifully set up. The bar and food were set up on a balcony right off of the room and there was plenty of space for people to mingle. The food was delicious and the guests raved about it.
