It is with great disappointment and sadness really that I take the time out of my very busy…read moreschedule to write this review. Last year I sought care for my 85 year old mother who was showing serious signs of forgetfulness and I was sure it was dementia. I found Dr Hammesfahr online and chose him because of the location being near to mom. He ran a mountain of tests. At the appointment to go over the results, I specifically asked and made VERY CLEAR that I needed to speak with the doctor separate from my mother to preserve her dignity and also to give me freeness of speech. Well, I was never given the courtesy. Dr. Hammesfahr reviewed his findings with both mom and I and stated to her that she did not have dementia but her circulation was compromised and that he would give her a nitroglycerin cream to apply to her arm twice a day and she would be doing much better in a couple of months. As he explained to her how to apply the cream, and to be sure not to get it in her eyes and to wash her hands etc etc I could tell she looked bewildered and was not grasping what he was telling her. When he left the room for a minute, mom said, "is that for your dad?"!! I knew she wasn't getting it! When Dr Hammesfahr was finished, we all walked out without him giving me a chance to speak with him privately. I asked mom to wait in the reception area, hoping for the chance to talk to him. I said, "I need to speak with you further. I am concerned about mom's condition. She can't remember names of close family....." He cut me off and said, " She doesn't have dementia, she doesn't have dementia." I said, " But what about...." He cut me off again and said," She's fine, she doesn't have dementia." This cream that he recommended was not covered by Medicare. So I called his office and asked that the same drug be called in with a different delivery system, as Medicare did pay for the same drug as a patch. ( this made more sense to me anyway! What doctor would give a script that requires a good memory to a patient with memory issues? A patch would have been simpler and easier for her to comply with) . Medicare will pay for the patch. I was told he would need me to bring mom in again and pay for another office visit to get the EXACT SAME medication! I was incensed and refused to do it. At this point I called mom's primary care physician to see if they would be willing to look at all the records, and if they would go ahead and prescribe. I had to make SEVEN CALLS to Dr. Hammesfahr's office before those records were finally faxed over. I requested a copy of those records also. I poured over them with a highlighter looking for any markers that would indicate what I suspected even though he kept saying, "She doesn't have dementia." What I found was shocking and maddening to say the least! A report from the doctor who read the PET scan stated that this patient has Alzheimer's type dementia and based on what he saw, it was advanced! How could Dr Hammesfahr say she had no dementia? Didn't he read the reports?! Thousands of dollars in tests, not to mention time and effort and ABSOLUTELY NOTHING was done on the part of this practice to get mom the treatment she needed. ABSOLUTELY NOTHING!
