What a delightful visit to the Village Bookstore. The staff and owner were helpful as I tried to pick out a new book. It was refreshing to see a parade of young people come through selecting books and other things. I was pleased to see a group of high school students selecting books for a book drive they had held. The Village Bookstore has been a shining beacon during this lockdown. Shopping online is super easy with their system and in stock books can be picked up via contactless delivery the following day. Books on special order have come in quickly. The owner even wrapped my books free of charge upon hearing that they were a gift. Independent bookstores are so important to our communities and I am so proud to support them because they lift us up. The few extra dollars it costs to purchase a book at list price is helping to literally save lives so please consider doing your part. read more

These teeny tiny bookstore recently moved a few doors down from seemingly larger digs. I admit sheepishly that I tend to frequent B&N and Borders because of their sizable educator and email discounts, but this is an example of a dying relic: The Local Independent Bookstore Killed by People like Lex C. Staffed by one of its owners who eagerly book-chats with patrons, VB has a small but impressive selection of fiction, travel, and kids' books, along with cards and small gifts. read more

Would have been been a wonderful bookstore if not for a fatal flaw....The people who work there are nasty to children. My wife and three-year-old stopped in to deliver some flyers for a cancer awareness organization that we are affiliated with. The person was very curt, and said he would put a flyer in the store window whenever he had some free space, and there was plenty of free space in that window. He was the only person in the entire town that was not ready and willing to put the materials up right in front of us. That wasn't as bad as the nasty female employee who grabbed a book out of my daughter's hand while she was sitting on the floor carefully, quietly looking at it. The dust jacket fell off, as it does when many people read books, and the woman scolded her, saying it was an " adult book." My wife and daughter left abruptly, and then when they came over to my son and I, who were waiting outside witnessing this, my daughter started sobbing, apologizing for being bad, and asking if we could go home because of the mean lady. My children are not perfect, but they are very young, and my daughter damn well knows how to behave in a quiet, public place. I was fuming mad because she genuinely loves books and would never hurt one. My wife and I are both elementary school teachers, and never allow for our children to run wild in retail establishments, (as we saw plenty of children doing this all around Pleasantville and were pretty surprised at the lack of parental supervision) What a great way for these people to instill a love of reading in children ....pathetic and disgusting. I was going to go back in and tell them off myself, but I figured I had better just put it all online for other customers to see so that they will think twice before shopping for their children here. read more

My wife and I were browsing in the bookstore the other day. With her cel phone, my wife took a couple of pictures of one of the books. The store manager very rudely scolded us for doing that. "No photos" might be the store policy, but there are a dozen ways the store manager could have informed us in a tactful way. In today's retail market, independent bookstores need to maintain a good connection with their customers. If you are going to act rudely towards us, we can just buy from Amazon. read more

I used to work around Pleasantville and this bookstore consumed a lot of my time between waiting for my shuttle or train. It's a small and very cozy place. I loved that I was allowed to take my time to pick up and put back as many books as I wanted. I would routinely leave this bookstore with at least two books in tow. I am now in Los Angeles and yearning for a similar bookstore close to me. I miss the peacefulness that would fill me when I entered this place. I miss the loyalty card (which I managed to complete before I left Pleasantville for good)! I miss grabbing my book and heading to the platform to start reading. This is a nice local business. Very friendly and helpful. Very convenient location. I love supporting local businesses. Clean store and a nice layout. The one issue I have had (which is why it's a four and not a five) is inventory. A bunch of times they have had to order a book because they didn't have it. Now it's. A smaller store so of course they don't have the capacity to carry multiple copies of everything. Having said that, they have a quick turnaround when thy need to order a book. I so wanted to like this bookstore, but they really are awful about kids. We went there in the evening and carefully picked out a bunch of books. I had read the previous reviews, so figured maybe the store was sensitive about people letting their childrenuse the store as a library, and wanted to be respectful, so I was supervising my kids very carefully, letting them look only at books we were committed to buying. There was one book we picked out, a pop-up style book, that I didn't let my son look at, but picked out for him and then proceeded to carry around the store. We spent about $90 on books, and then went next store to have dinner. My children were looking at the books, and when we opened the pop-up the pages were literally falling out of the book. So we did what any normal person would do, and went next store to exchange/return it. The guy was incredibly rude. He accused my son of "tearing" the pages out of the book (they were clearly not torn, but the binding was just failing) and said that he had found pages of the book around the store. My husband told him that we had a house of books, and that our children don't tear pages out of books - he didn't even mention that my son never had the book to himself - and the shopkeeper said "I saw him in action" in the store, implying that my kids had been misbehaving. I assure you, my son was not doing anything worse than chattering about which books we should buy. The man did, reluctantly, give us a refund. We were so pleased to find a bookstore nearby, but we won't return there. There's a nice bookstore in Katonah that focuses on children's books, if anyone is looking for specifically for that, but otherwise, we're going to have to go farther afield. read more

Small but more than sufficient to cover the latest reads. It doesn't have a place to sit and enjoy coffee and your book but it's so close to wonderful places to do just that it's no bother. I am a huge bibliophile- to the point that my husband complains about the number of books we have at home. I'm a supporter of independent bookstores, so I was excited to finally get to browse here. My friend (another huge reader) and I headed over after a movie at the Burns. We were the only people in the store, and were looking around and chatting about books (and I was picking out several to purchase) when the owner (who was blaring music in the store) came over and told us to quiet down because WE were being too loud. Needless to say, I put everything back on the shelf and decided to order everything I had picked out on Amazon instead. I'm certainly not supporting a business where the proprietor is rude to customers. The customer service is better on Amazon, and that's saying a lot. read more

I'd initially heard both good and bad things about this bookstore. After visiting on three occasions, I've concluded that the negative reviews are entirely justified. The bookstore staff seem o.k. -- neither friendly nor rude -- UNLESS you're there with children. These people apparently hate children! I've seen them shush children who are talking quietly, and give relieved looks to each other when children leave the store. On my last visit, they glared at me when I took several books off the shelf to help my niece compare them. The negative attitude toward children is obvious, and very strange to encounter in a bookstore. A second problem is their policy on gift receipts. I asked for a gift receipt so that the recipient wouldn't know the price upon receiving the gift but would still be able to return the item. Other bookstores -- both independents and national chains -- have done that for me, and I assumed it would be o.k. here as well. In fact, however, I first got a nasty "No" response from a clerk who didn't seem sure of their policy. I then spoke with someone else, who very grudgingly issued a gift receipt after 5-10 minutes of discussion. I do not recommend this bookstore at all. I'm normally a fan of independent bookstores, but this one makes it clear why some of them go out of business. I was willing to give this store a second try (and a third), but the service has declined in quality each time I've been there. I also have to question why so many of the positive comments about this store are stated in very general terms, as if they're advertisements. In contrast, the negative comments are specific and meaningful. I suspect that there will be no more positive comments once the owners' friends have all posted. read more

Remember the days when you would wander through a cozy bookstore taking in the book covers and reading the jackets only to realize you've lost track of time? That's what the Village Bookstore is to our family. The staff is knowledgable and happy to suggest a good read and each bookshelf has handwritten notecards detailing and recommending books the employees have read. We recently visited the Village Bookstore for the next book in the series one of my children was reading. We picked up that book along with a little known book recommended by one of the wonderful women working that day. As it happens, the book she suggested was a page-turner and became the flame that re-ignited my child's love of a good read! Looking for a last minute book club book, school book..VB is open until 9pm on weeknights, a lifesaver for us on more than one occasion. If they don't have what you need in stock, they'll get it to you within a day or two. When your order comes in, you'll receive a lovely call from the bookstore letting you know it's there ready to pick up whenever you can swing back in...old school, local, friendly, a gem. read more

The Village Bookstore is one of the most fun places to go. When I entertain godchildren (ages 5 & 8) the first place they want to go is VB. Wonderful people with a good selection of books for children and grown-ups alike. A warm cosy place where you can take your time and feel welcome. The store itself is nice, but the owners are not. Quite rude and pretentious. The first time I went in, the owner (woman) was working the counter and was very curt and almost snide with someone enquiring about a book that wasn't in stock. Another time, they yelled at a child for taking a book off the shelf in the children's section - which their mother intended to purchase. When the mother said "I told them we could get the book." she turned around and snapped "Then get it yourself." The last and final time I was there, one of the owner's took a phone call while ringing me up. Instead of asking me to hold on while he took the call, he held up his hand as I was mid-sentence and said "WAIT" and took the call. It sounded like a business call and he proceeded to insult the production quality of the person's book and make a nasty remark about how he "never thought that book would ever sell." I felt it was extremely rude and unprofessional to even say that, let alone in front of a customer. I turned around and left without making my purchase. It is very unfortunate because I like to support local businesses. This store has been in this community for many, many years but I refuse to give my business to people who think it is okay to be rude. With that being said, the rest of the small staff is quite nice and helpful. Maybe they should consider letting them deal with customers and take a step back. read more

2 weeks ago, I would've given this charming, independent bookstore a significantly better rating. After my most recent experience there, I will not be returning. My friend and I were taking a walk around Pleasantville after work and decided to visit the bookstore. We've both shopped there in the past and like to support local businesses. My friend wanted to buy her mom a book for mother's day. As we walked around store, we chatted with each other. The man working behind the counter was reading a book and not very friendly. No "can I help you find anything?", not even a "hello". I asked my friend what type of book she was looking for and as she began to ask my opinion on the book she was looking at, the man loudly cleared his throat. I looked up and he shushed us and told us to be quiet, before going back to reading his book. This is a bookstore, not a library, and even so, we were not talking loudly. Even if it was a library, no one would have shushed us, speaking at the same volume. We were simply the only customers in this bookstore, and, to top it off, we were talking about buying a book. We tried to speak quieter, at a whisper at this point, and he continued to look up from his book each time we spoke. Being the only customers in the store, it would have been nice to not feel so completely unwelcome. Had he not made us feel like our presence was a huge inconvenience for him, he would have made a few sales. read more

Great bookstore - small, yes, but they carry a really interesting selection of books, far better than the few remaining B&N stores - a chain that seems to have just given up. This is a place for people who like to read, browse the latest & most interesting titles, and maybe find a great book that's a few years old and not stocked by B&N. I'm really surprised at some of the negative reviews. I've only experienced kind, courteous service here including special orders. Independent bookstores like this are treasures. I might give it fewer than 5 stars if there were a bookstore like it in every town to compare it with, but this is the best bookstore for at least 15 miles around imo. read more
