Looking for breakfast spots in the area this looked to be our best bet. Plenty of parking available and it is located in what appears to be an old mall that while outdated looking did appear to be full of many other businesses. This is your classic diner you would imagine when you think of spots that brings regulars in everyday. Also I must add they were decorated for Christmas to give that little extra holiday feeling, great touch. You are greeted right away by some of the friendliest staff and service is top notch. The person in our party was getting their coffee topped off long before it had a chance of being empty. Not really something you see with service quality much these days. In typical diner fashion they offer their breakfast all day during their open hours as well as have rotating daily specials. While some of the specials sounded really good, and even just their typical menu offerings sounded tasty both my wife and I ended up choosing an omelette. She ended up choosing the bacon and cheese while I got one of their loaded ones that came with sausage, onions, homefries, and cheese. Serving sizes were great and it is definitely a spot you will be leaving feeling full. While both were tasty, we have had better breakfast and omelettes elsewhere but would gladly return here again! The cheese used appeared to be American cheese slices and my wife's hash brown had an off taste from the oil used to fry it. Just a few knocks against the food to make it a 4 star review rather than 5 but minimal overall. Positively though they filled her omelette with a ton of bacon! If you are in Potsdam or the nearby area looking for a breakfast (or lunch) spot I do think this is worth your time! For the second time we left before we even spoke with a waitress. The gentleman busing tables was stellar. Clean a table quickly and thoroughly, got us menus and took our drink order as he saw we were waiting. He's the only reason for the 2nd star. We proceed to sit for 30 minutes and watch multiple tables fill and get service after we were seated. At the 20 minute mark a group of 3 came in, sat down and had waitress service as we sat waiting. I then watched as food was delivered to one of the tables that came in after us. I paid for our drinks and left. I would suggest some type of numbered card as you get a table. This is the second and last time this has happened. I will not be going to the village diner anytime soon. read more

Heading home through NY and looked for a place for lunch. This diner had great reviews so we decided to try it. We didn't realize they closed at 1:00 so showed up a little close to closing. The place was packed with locals, and had that nice diner buzz of happy people. The staff were welcoming, answered all our questions, and we got our lunch quickly. Comfort food to fill us up for the road. Our server knew we were traveling and offered us coffee for the road since she had a fresh pot and they were closing. So thoughtful! Don't be put off by the old awning and bad parking lot, the diner is clean and bright and the bathrooms are, too. The "marketplace" is an under construction work in progress. One thing to note: if you are vegan you won't find much to choose from. Vegetarians will have a few more options. read more

Good morning. I am a 1982 graduate of Crane school of music and I now live in Atlanta, Georgia. I am up in Potsdam, NY for just a couple days and wanted to give a huge shout out to Hope (and the rest of the wait staff) for the great service I received yesterday morning when I came in for breakfast. I am a member of the Facebook page "You know you went to college in Potsdam if..." and before I left Atlanta for my trip north, I asked for suggestions of where to eat in Potsdam. You can guess what all the Clarkson and Potsdam alumni suggested for dinner (Sergi's), but for breakfast, it was an overwhelming recommendation for the Village Diner! I ate breakfast there yesterday and my portion was so big that I brought half of it back to the motel for breakfast this morning. Hope was amazing as a waitress visiting my table just the right amount of times to make sure everything was right, refilling my coffee and water when needed. She is definitely a keeper as a waitress. I found this place on Yelp as my hubby and I were driving through upstate New York in the way to see family. We were hungry but did t want fast food. We made it about a half hour before they closed. And I'm so glad we did! The best sandwich I have ever tasted comes from this diner. The Cranberry-Turkey Slammer is sliced pan rotates turkey breast, Swiss cheese, cranberry sauce, lettuce, coleslaw and Russian dressing on rye. I don't like rye so I ordered mine on Texas toast bread. So freaking delicious!!! If I could give this sandwich 6 stars I would. Please do yourself a favor and try this sandwich. It's like thanksgiving and heaven all rolled into one. I also ordered a hot chocolate which was fabulous. It came with whipped cream and chocolate syrup on top. A great diner, with a classic diner menu for both breakfast and lunch. Today I had a roast beef and provolone sandwich that was exactly perfectly what I wanted. The portions and prices are both sensible, and the atmosphere is friendly and bright. But most important is the service. The waitstaff are amazing. They're professionals - fast, thoughtful, thorough. Best of all, at the same time that they keep my coffee hot, they chat with my toddler, bring my husband extra syrup, and laugh at our jokes. They're good people who do a good job, and make me want to go have breakfast with them. read more

We found this gem using Yelp and are so glad we did. This quaint little diner has personality plus as well as GREAT food. The menu was varied enough for each of us to find something we wanted. We had a Ciabatta Breakfast sandwich (egg, spinach, red peppers, cheese), hot open-faced turkey sandwich with macaroni salad, and a typical breakfast (French toast, sausage, eggs, fried potatoes). All three meals were excellent. The raspberry pie Ala mode was also good. Service was very good and prices were reasonable. We'll definitely be back. read more

If you are looking for a diner, this will do, but don't expect much more It's a bustling place in a strange location. Without the Yelp app and my car GPS, I would never have seen it or found it. It's attached to a sketchy kind of deserted mall that looks like its from the 1960's and hasn't been updated since. As far as the food: burgers, eggs, BLT's, etc... If you are looking for a relatively inexpensive breakfast or lunch it will be fine. Bathrooms are at the end of a corridor in the mall that I felt uncomfortable walking to and probably wouldn't send kids alone to. The signs about why the bathrooms are closed early due to vandalism don't help you feel more comfortable, not very clean either. I'd probably look for options. read more

Best part of breakfast was the service. Corned beef hash, though from a can had a very strange sour taste. Inedible! The biscuits and gravy were good but not much gravy. Food was bleh! Have to pay an additional 1.99 for real maple syrup (1/4 cup) When you pay by cc the minimum amount for gratuity is 18% and it goes up from there. And it's on the food total including tax. One of the few things I miss about living in a college town is college diner food. We recently traveled from Buffalo to Potsdam to visit friends and ended up at the Village Diner for breakfast on Sunday morning. The place was packed but we were able to get a table rather quickly. The server was very friendly and helped walk us through the menu and was kind enough to split checks for our big group. I ordered a breakfast sandwich and an M&Ms bagel (because why NOT?) and my husband ordered a large breakfast platter. In addition, we all ordered coffee and juice to go with our meals. The food was exactly what you'd expect from a college diner - big plates of greasy, bad-for-you food. Just what we were looking for after a long night of drinks with friends. My only "complaint" is about the menu offerings and the price. There was only one breakfast platter option on the menu. Usually diners will have several platters to choose from. In addition, the prices seemed really high. The best part about going to a diner is the quantity of food for the relatively cheap price - this wasn't really the case here. We would definitely go back, but it's not the BEST diner for the price that we've ever been to. read more

The new owners bought one of those instant concentrate mixer juice machines. Going from real OJ to the off-color and strange tasting stuff that you get for free at cheap motels was a poor choice. To the current owners: The Village Diner was great when you bought it. Stop cutting corners. For such a simple menu, they could really stand out by making everything fresh without any additional cost and just a bit more effort. Buy some oranges for juice! Make your own bread for toast! Throw away anything canned or frozen and move forward. You can get great fresh beef from the Kilkoyne farm in Winthrop and amazing vegetables from the Martin's farm on 11B in Potsdam. Get inspired Village Diner! I also just noticed that they don't open until 7am now. A diner that doesn't open until 7... Are they catering to the unemployed crowd? 6am was nice when I worked the overnight shift and could stop there for an omelette before I went home. Alas, that is no longer to be. Although we were in Potsdam for Alumni Weekend, we had no problems getting a table or fast service while we were there. This is possibly the cleanest diner I have ever eaten in. You can taste how clean the grill is simply in how the food tastes like what it's supposed to. The biggest disappointment we ran into was the lack of English Muffin bread. They no longer have a supplier. Apparently, this is one item that helped to define the Village Diner, but we had to settle for English muffins instead. read more
