We enjoyed our visit overall. The space feels a bit dated, and those with allergies or asthma may find the carpeted dining area uncomfortable. First of all..not a warm welcome..walked in at 6 30...told no table until 7..so sat at bar had a very lightly poured glass of wine...no smiles from foh manager/bartender..after that..zero contact..so 7 02 we stand by the door...she takes us to the back and I see several open tables..ok fine..gave us water,didn't pour for us, brought bread...3 slices of cold baguette and cold butter, 12 minutes later, server, 17 minutes after that we got our wine and ordered..30 minutes later our food. My girlfriends rice tasted like a refrigerator smells, garnish was a crayfish head(dumb) use a lobster claw for god sake at 37$ for the dish, scallops with no color to them..ok my meal..over the phone suppose to be a strip steak, was a ribeye they cut for me,overcooked and gray in color, po fries looked like store bought fries and who puts cold chiffonade greens on a hot plate. Very disappointed, only good thing was our friendly server. Oh and next to me, I asked how their meal was, they shrugged their shoulders and said not for the price, so I'm not the only one. Won't go back. Plus I could see the kitchen from my seat, and watched the"chefs" barehand food on to a few plates. I was up here visiting St Lawrence university with my mom and sister desperate for a bite for dinner- we stumbled upon the 1844 house where I had the best hamburger and shoestring fries of my life (I have had a lot of hamburgers) I got the 1844 salad it was so excellent and the chocolate cake for desert was perfect! I don't usually give 5/5 reviews but the interior was so tasteful and the waitstaff were so attentive and kind. They even brought out pallets cleansers (sorbet) and ginger chocolates at the end! We had a wonderful dinner last night. Shared a superb bottle of Sonoma Cutrer Russian River chardonnay. Miracle finding it. Stated with pom frites for the table. Very lightly breaded with a garlic dipping sauce. Served in a paper lined cone. Very innovative. Then we were brought a goat cheese tartlet as an amuse-bouche. I had the rack of lamb, girls the filet. All perfectly cooked and served with a wild mushroom flavored rice and grilled asparagus. Yummy. Wonderful dill- cucumber palette cleanser "landed" with perfect timing and was delicious. No desert as we had a well known Governor coffee house proprietor (now closed) who made us a tierra mousseau waiting for us back home. Not cheap but not a gouge. We'll be back soon. read more

This is disappointing. I had been a fan of 1844 since it opened years ago, but my last visit was before CV-19 hit. The ownership has changed, and so has the quality of the food and service (for the worse). This used to be my favorite local restaurant, but I no longer will visit here. How can you improve? Get the "kids" off their phones and stop socializing in the bar when patrons are present. Train the wait staff in being professional, you are not taking my order at a fast food joint. Everything out of the kitchen must be perfect (no soggy buffalo shrimp appetizers for instance). Remove the 3% "surcharge" from the bill. Hire a professional manager to run the place and train the staff. Spending $160 for a meal for two, I expect great food and professional service - both are lacking now. read more

Stopped in for dinner on a Wednesday night. Food was great, but service was a bit slow. 3.5% fee charged for using a credit card.

Typically love this restaurant, the service, and food. This night, however, fell short with the service and made us really disappointed. Called to make a reservation several days before the day we wanted (during their open business hours). No one answered so I left a message. My mistake, I should have kept calling and not left a message (it said it would call back). I called the day of to check our reservation and they didn't have us down at all, and could not get us in until 8pm. I said that was fine, as we didn't mind the later time. However, when we sat down to eat, our server was super inattentive, would ask if we needed anything then forget to bring it (had to ask for something 4 times), didn't refill waters often, and the worst, rushed us throughout the meal. Really makes me mad after I called for the original reservation to be at 6pm. When I asked what time they closed after being offered the 8pm slot, they assured me they didn't stop seating until 9pm. If this was the case, the server should not be rushing us, especially at this price point and expected service. Really sad because our previous experiences have been the best, especially with the one waitress we typically have (forgot her name, but she is amazing!). Wow!! Just wow!!!! You know you are in for something special as soon as you pull into the parking lot. There is a quaint little barn on the right hand side in the restaurant looks like an old farmhouse surrounded by wildflowers. This farm to table restaurant was amazing from the moment we stepped inside. They do not have a children's menu but we had a choice between butter noodles, a hamburger, and a chicken dish. One of my children went with the hamburger and unfortunately for $24 it ended up coming home with us because it was just too big for him to eat and he didn't enjoy it. My other son ordered butter noodles and it was what appeared to be housemaid fettuccine with butter. Very good. Next up was the appetizers. We have the chef sampling which was complementary and was fried lentil balls and a lavender honey butter with bread. I enjoyed them. We got the tapas plate as well as the lemon ricotta fritters. Both were delightful and we would highly recommend. My mom had the Caesar salad and she had no complaints. She said it was very fresh and light. For dinner two of us had the Mongolian barbecue. We were lucky enough to be able to get a half order and it was still plenty of food. I got mine vegetarian and my father added the beef. Both were super flavorful. My mom got the lamb chops and ate everyone clean. As if we weren't full enough, The dessert menu was too much for my mom to handle. So she got the warm berry compote shortcake and my dad had an espresso. Both were a great way to end the night. If you are in Potsdam or honestly even if you are an hour away you need to go to this place. The service is fantastic. Great restaurant! The bar area just when you walk inside is really cute. Nice rustic vibe. We had a table for three in the first room of the dining area. The food was fantastic. We were brought a goat cheese tartlet as an amuse-bouche. Yum. We then started with Truffle Pommes Frites and Korean Beef Tips. The Beef Tips came with scallion pancakes and a cabbage slaw. So good!! Had dinner here last night. Service was great. Started out wit a few drinks from the bar. Much to my surprise they had Sip of Sunshine IPA on tap. Last time I found this was in Stowe so I was pleasantly surprised. The best IPA I've seen on tap around here. Wife enjoyed a glass of rose. After our drinks we sat down in the dining area for dinner. We split the tapas which were quite good. I favored the olive tapenade. For meals she had the filet and I tried the burger. Initially we were both leaning towards filets but I am glad we split it up. The burger was delicious and it came with fries and a salad. One of the better burgers I have had. My wife loved the filet and gnocchi. We split a bottle of wine which was reasonably priced for the value and capped things off with dessert. This was our first trip here and we will return. This place could be put in a major metropolis and likely be way more successful but I am happy it's where it is and I'm sure they will continue to succeed. read more

My girlfriend and I go here all the time! The staff is sometimes slow but it can be busy at time there. The filet mignon absolutely makes up for the slightly slow service at times. The blue cheese butter on the dish is AMAZING! By far the best steak house in the area. I've even bought a painting that was hanging in the first spot we sat in when we tried the restaurant out, we thought it was closing so we had to get it for the memory. The pricing is perfect for the meal you get, it's about $120 for two. I recommend this place to everyone!! read more

Wow. My expectation of food in this area of NY State is pretty low (and I'll say accurate) with the exception of the 1844 house. As our first visit, we weren't sure what to expect but the Yelp reviews looked good. We were concerned about being underdressed after a very long car ride from home but when we stepped in, it was nice but unpretentious (the reviews say "dressy") . Other people were in jeans so we felt fine. Got a table on a Friday night without a reservation at 8PM (it was pouring our however). The overall house is old style (1844 House). Expect to see a lot of wood, low ceilings, wall paper and sconces. The bar area is small and geared to people waiting for tables. After being seated, they were very accommodating when a third person was going to join us . They just pulled a table over. Now the food. Wow. The bread was served with a honey butter. We then started with a melted brie topped with brown sugar and served with bread and strawberries. It was like a fondue. For mains, we had a fabulous ravioli dish (uniquely vegetable filled), a game hen with an herbed aioli, and a smoked BBQ pork shank. The 1844 Salad was also excellent. An orange pekoe sobet to cleanse the palette. I highly recommend it and give it a rare 5 stars because it blows everything away in the area. Food was great, services was great. read more

White sheets of paper on the tables, really? Definitely takes away the elegant look and feel that we were used to. Expect to see paper at a bar and grill, certainly not the 1844 House. The music playing was not soft dinner music, don't know how it would be classified, know it didn't add to the ambiance. Food was just ok. Have eaten here a dozen or so times. Mainly special occasions. Service is always iffy and the food is OK sometimes if warm but not worth the money. This Thanksgiving was exceptionally disappointing. The wait staff seemed annoyed. Right from the hostess to the bartender and waitress. It reflected in our service. We were courteous, understanding but nothing changed the mood. Service was extremely slow. Drinks arrived with the cold appetizer and we were never offered another. The main course was actually cold! I mean come on. This is a Thanksgiving meal. The food clearly is of higher quality. We had salmon and duck breast, both were quite good and and side dishes married well with the meats. The duck breast was slightly overcooked but not to the point that it needed to be send back. The pita-like bread accompanying the duck was slightly overbaked and therefore too dry/crunchy. Outstanding execution in every area. THIS is where you need to go if you are dining in the North Country. Be warned (- and I believe they might have a disclaimer on their menu?) on the wait times between courses. Make sure that you have your evening reserved to truly enjoy each course here. Bring company that appreciates great cuisine and wine to ensure that you won't be bored with their conversation after an hour and a half. While waiting for our table, I had a Moscow Mule which was fantastic! They had an excellent wine selection, and I believe I went with the Malbec that they keep there. Starting, the crab cappucino was quite good, I was a bit confused by the name but it really is a cappucino-foamy-and-frothy crab bisque that was served in a small coffee mug. The buffalo shrimp (for the unadventurous crowd) and escargot are excellent as well. My entree was to die for. I had the scallops over a parmesan risotto w/ a tomato saffron sauce. I was slightly hesitant to order this dish because I saw that capers were included, but I was pleasantly taken by surprise that I actually /liked/ them. They were crispy, salty, little explosions of flavor that accented the soft creaminess of the rest of the dish. Wish that I lived closer to be able to enjoy the 1844 House's exquisiteness more often. One of the few places in the Potsdam area that has some fine dining available. It appears to be a French Style home with many rooms that has been converted to an eatery. It would probably do even better in a bigger place. They have some lovely delicacies that are wasted on the North Country to some degree. That's not to say that their is not culture here - having Crane School of music in town helps a great deal with that. They just don't really have a sense of Haute Cuisine that goes along with that culture. All that being said - the food here is great. I don't even know any negatives to tell you. Its pricey for the area and with good reason. They have a Pepper encrusted seared Yellow Fin Ahi. Which is an amazing thing to my ears. It has a port reduction. Meal ruined by manager. Had dinner here tonight for the second time and were very disappointed by the service and food preparation. We ordered a Charles Krug generations Can and it was served cold. The manager came to our table and explained that In old castles this was the normal serving temperature and that modern times and room temperature expectations were overrated. I laughed and told him we drink our $80 red wine at room temp and to let me know if he can get that done. He warmed the wine somehow We ordered rare steaks for dinner. 2 came rare one medium. We returned the overlooked steak. Here comes the manager explaining that tho steak was of a different consistency than the others and could not be cooked rare. They were all the same Ny strips. I now got upset as this is BS. It was overlooked. He the. Explained that this was the last steak available. This guy had some serious attitude. He told us he worked at a 4star resort or 15 years. Yet he never apologized and offered us a replacement or the meal on the house or even a glass of wine. I finally told him to get my wife the filet rare. This took 15 minutes. Now I was really upset as my wife had not eaten since noon. To say he least we left immediately after my wife got the steak. There was no apology or a gesture of good will.
