Let me start off by saying this is not a review to hurt the Village inn, This was my grandpas favorite chicken house in Barberton . There used to be quite a few but over the years they have dwindled down. Sad but true. There used to be a chicken house called Terrace Garden beside Hopocans chicken house, it was tore down many years ago. Belgrade Gardens is another that has been here for many years and is in my opinion the best Chicken house in Barberton . So let me give the Village Inn some constructive criticism . One thing they did was to do away with the dark rye bread and replaced it with wheat. The rye bread was always given clear back to the 1950's why they decided to mess with tradition is beyond me. The hot rice is overcooked to mush and is not very good. The chicken seems to not have the same taste not sure if they are still using lard or changed that also. Some things that made a restaurant an icon you just don't mess with. Let me say the food is not that bad but could use some improvement. Hopefully they will see this review and take steps to correct their path they are on before it causes them financial hardship. I do not want this place to close I want them to do good and keep a tradition and history of Barberton alive. read more

Stopped in the other night for a family birthday. I now live in another state and I always hit the chicken houses when I'm in Barberton or Ohio. We did have a large group 10 plus. Did not make a reservation. We were seated very promptly and our orders taken quickly. I enjoyed the hot rice. The coleslaw has changed some. It seemed very shredded. The seasoning was good but different. I thought the fries was good. The chicken I got a regular white dinner for myself. The chicken pieces. It seemed to be a lot smaller. Half of a chicken wing. Two small chicken breast tenders and one little drumette. I will say the chicken had good flavor. The breading was good. Cooked to perfection just different. We never received bread. Our waitress did a very good job. She was polite fast with her service. I thought she did a great job. The children loved the ice cream for dessert. I do think the building needs to be revamped. New paint and get that carpet out of there. A deep cleaning maybe rearrange it so it looks different inside. Overall the family really enjoyed their self. read more

Stopped Friday 8/14/26 for lunch. Ordered chicken dinner with fries, coleslaw, and hot sauce. Haven't been here in years. Heard varying opinions so I wanted my own. Place was busy but not packed. Ample amount of waitresses. Dinner came out in about 20 minutes.. typical for fried chicken. When the order came out, all I could see was fries. The chicken and sides were buried under a mound of fries. Problem 1) the fries were cold! How can you serve cold fries when the place is busy at noon? Problem 2) I could not recognize the hot sauce. It didn't resemble any hot sauce I had ever seen. It was brown in color and hard. I couldn't eat it. Problem 3) chicken wasn't crisp. The skin was doughy. No sense in complaining. My waitress was nowhere to be found. I ate what I could since it would be my only meal of the day. My waitress magically appeared with the check and said she would be back to get it. She literally never came back. 15 minutes later I walked to the front and paid my bill. I forgot to mention that while I was waiting for my food.. an older guy bussing tables ran his cart into my chair. No.. I'm sorry or any acknowledgement. Just a warning that if you go on a Tuesday night, don't order anything grilled. Since it is steak night, the grill will back up. We waited quite a while for a server to come (probably 15 minutes). Then waited another hour for food. My grilled chicken was very tough with no flavor. Another member of the party had cold potatoes. Our server was inattentive and seemed uninterested in providing service. They didn't refill our drinks, even after we asked, and quickly walked away while we were still speaking. After our food was served, 65 mins after arrival, they never checked back on us. My chicken sandwich was bland, and I would've loved to ask for some sauce to improve it, but the server was nowhere to be found. Overall, the lack of service and underwhelming food made this a regrettable visit. I hope they improve for future customers. read more

It was solid. The chicken, coleslaw, hot sauce, and fries were on POINT. Generous portions. Chicken was perfect- crispy on the outside and just the right flavor. Hot sauce was just perfect. Sometimes it's too spicy and sometimes too bland, but this time it was JUST RIGHT! Service was pretty slow, although to be fair our server did bring out the children's meal for my three year old a little earlier. Even the hot dog he ordered was delicious. I hadn't been here in awhile and I hadn't remembered there being a soft-serve ice cream machine. He loved that too. We were there on a Friday night, so it was a little busy. I would love to come back here for this amazing food, but I would probably instead come on a less-busy weeknight. read more

Ordered the all you can eat fish. The first st batch was cold, but second pieces were very good and so were the fries. I wasn't a fan of the coleslaw. Another person at the table chose and loved the hot rice. Only drawback is the service. We weren't waited on for about 15 minutes after being seated and once we ordered we're unable to get refills, of drinks or fish because the waitresses are scattered all over the restaurant and just wait on random tables. I think our waitress totally forgot we were her table. We are going to give this place another try because we did enjoy the food read more

Evidently they don't have enough workers that every time you call they ask if you can hold a second and 8 to10 minuets after you wait they hang up on you! So rude!! My wife and I had the 2- piece chicken snack. The chicken pieces were quite small and dry. I also found the hot sauce to be thick and tasted somewhat like ketchup. The food was good. I ended up ordering chicken, which was not my first choice. I wanted a steak, so I could see if I wanted to buy meat from them. We were told they ran out on Friday (this was Saturday) and the were also out of brown bread. I would think, like most restraunts, they do more business on weekends. Every now and then I get a hankering for some fried chicken, which then usually warrants a trip to Amish Country. This time the hankering hit and I remembered that a good friend used to always talk about going to the Village Inn for chicken, so I decided to check it out. The restaurant itself is kind of a run down mid-century American building with a very "flyover country" vibe. I ordered the "White Lunch Special" featuring a breast, a wing, and a drumette with hot sauce, Cole slaw, and green beans as my sides. The service is kind of slow but being run by a few older ladies it was what one could expect. The chicken was OK. I wasn't a fan of the breading which seemed kind of thin, but the chicken itself tasted good and was moist. I really enjoyed the fEastern European flavor profile on the hot sauce and the sweet vinegar Cole slaw was excellent, but in retrospect, probably a lot of sugar. The green beans were typical canned green beans. This place won't dislodge Amish country from my choice, but it was a perfectly acceptable meal, although I don't think I will be making it a regular stop. read more

Ok let me start of by saying I am not a fan of barberton style chicken so I never try and get it. I like paprikash and thats what I get. Wife wanted her btown chicken. Should have went elsewhere. Had to wait just for a menu because they were all being used or missing or something. I noticed on the menu no paprikash so of course I was disappointed. Told it is a seasonal thing. No fish either which was my second choice. Well guess I was stuck eating chicken. If it wasn't for the hot sauce and coleslaw I would have not eaten a bite of the flavorless chicken that the people of barberton love. They shorted us a leg for my daughters meal. First off the original Village inn was amazing. This was the first time we have ordered under the new ownership. We ordered a 18 piece family meal with double sides. That was almost $50. When we got home and opened the chicken half of the 18 pieces were drummettes or wing segments not even whole wings and the breasts and thighs were so small the chicken bucket was only half full with all 18 pieces in it so that sucked. Well the chicken tasted like it was not marinated and the breading had no flavor either. The coleslaw was so vingery I coughed with every bite I took. The only saving grace was the fries were good and so was the hot rice. So I would say that I would definitely recommend spending a little more and get one of the other area chicken places food. read more

This is the definition of the "white people food" stereotype. It's as if they are afraid of seasoning -- they didn't even use salt! The breading on the fried chicken was okay, but zero flavor. The fries are good, but no salt. Their "hot rice" was rice in tomato WATER. No heat. No flavor. The onion rings and hush puppies were probably the best parts of our meal. I don't understand it. They are always packed but I know I will never be back. The staff were amazing and deserve a raise though. They work harder than the food is worth. I must say right off, you can't beat the chicken! That being said, we go there at least 3. or 4 times a. month. The kitchen must be very disorganized. The last four times we were there, the food took forever. It has happened numerous times, but this is the first time four times in three weeks. Monday Burgers took 45 minutes. They were not busy, and seemed to have plenty of help. After a half hour we asked what the problem was. Thats how long it took for her to venture near our table. She said they burnt is and were doing it over. Took another 15 minutes. On a Sunday after church, we got up to leave. An hour and a half, and we still did not have our food. The owners son did stop us and put our food in a to go box no charge, and gave us gift certificates. So he did try to make it right. The next incident was the following Monday. Waited 35 minutes for a burger, no refills, no bread. Nothing. Couldn't get our waitresses attention. Again, the mondays were not busy. The Sunday was. This is getting to be the norm in the last two months. Seems like lack of organization in the kitchen. But, the food is great! read more

Well, I'm scanning reviews from the past six months and I see they exist at both ends of the spectrum; four reporting great experiences and four reporting unfavorable visits. Unfortunately, I can't say much good about tonight's pick up and carry out. I found it odd that over in the unpopulated banquet dining room, just in front of the Out Of Order, closed women's restroom, with no one around, someone decided the best place to clean, separate and chop celery was outside the kitchen and in the empty dining room on a banquet table and cutting board. I can't say how long the improvised prep station was left unattended, but it was available to me (and to anyone else in the restaurant) for the entire 20-30 minutes I was there. I come from restaurant management and have never before witnessed kitchen prep happening in the dining room. Fries were good. Cole slaw lacked any color (those dark, outer cabbage leaves and carrots are nice to include, maybe) and the liquid in the slaw was bubbly, like something was going rancid in the cup. Hard pass. Hot Sauce was curious, more of a vinegar-based heat, not from actual peppers maybe; simple, flat flavor, not very complex or layered, just blah tomatoes and heat and rice. I've had better in Barberton, no doubts. And the chicken that I heard so much about ... the "return to the original recipe" ... ours was wet, dripping, chicken with oozing skin on seven of eight pieces; no salt and no pepper, boring and wet wet wet, like a "sweaty" crust, if you will. The eighth piece of eight pieces was darker and almost crispy but I fear this is only due to it having been redipped and reheated to complete our order. I heard promising things about the steaks in other reviews ... I'm not too excited to go gather any more data on this place, personally. I've kinda reached a final conclusion. I am not sure how the other, more positive reviews came to be, but I trust these are valid as well. Hope your experience is better. I'd avoid anything with celery in the near-term. read more

Ok! I was wrong! I had no idea that this place could have been so good. We met our daughter there despite my reluctance. I thought the chicken would be the same greasy soggy chicken and the greasy soggy fries would smother the soggy chicken. NOPE! The chicken was local and not soggy, cooked perfectly and the fries were on the side. Again not soggy. I got the sirloin steak, also local meat (which they will soon be selling), and it was so tender and tasty! I figured the meat would be tender because we could hear the chef tenderizing it in the kitchen. That part was cool. I got so much food and can complain about nothing. Even the salad was good with all of the goodies a salad should have and the lettuce was broken into reasonable size for easy eating. I had wine with my meal which did not taste cheap. The lady serving us was so personable and i have no idea how since she had a lot of tables to take care of. The place was pretty packed. We met friends there. There was nothing negative to report. It was clean, the staff was friendly, the wait was not long, the food was really good, and it was not loud. We recently dined at the Village Inn and was very disappointed in the hot sauce (some flavoring was added that never was before) I have been a customer the 50 years and the hot sauce never tasted like this - I'm not sure if it was Cumin or something else - just tasted horrible. The chicken thighs had back bone on the thigh and I have never had it before since the change in proprietor. We come there for the familiar taste and we can tell when its off. Please go back to the original recipe for the hot sauce. We were so disappointed. Afterall, this is why we go there. Also, I might add the fries are tooooooooooooooo dark. Been while since I've have Barberton Chicken but am happy to report that it's not changed and is as good as I remember it. We were in Green for a memorial service for a friend and she always enjoyed Barberton Chicken so we had a lunch in her honor. For those who do not know what Barberton Chicken, also call Serbian Chicken, it a regional dish served around Barberton Ohio. Originally served by Serbian Restaurant Owners and it is one of the original Fried Chicken recipes. Fresh Chicken, never frozen, lightly breaded with no seasoning and then fried in Lard. An I though that that was a Southern thing having grown up in the South. Served with what they call Hot Sauce which is a tomato and rice dish with a little heat ( mild not hot), Slaw ( shredded cabbage in a vinegar base) and hand cut French Fries round out the traditional dining experience. It's great and you taste the natural taste of the bird itself. Primal dining at it's best. Family style restaurant popular with the surrounding community which tends to lend itself to an older population. Excellent service and a great staff make a pleasant dining experience and i will be back. read more

Very disappointed in the "service" we received tonight. Due to a miscommunication we were told there would be a 45 minute wait for our food. Come to find out that was the wait time to dine in, then we were told it would be another 25 minutes for a to go order. That would be well over a hour of our time wasted. We are here out of town & don't go out to eat many places around here. I can understand a miscommunication but to then not have anyone apologize or try to accommodate us for our time is ridiculous. We won't be coming back here. This place has gone down hill. Perhaps the staff needs better hospitality training. We're on our way to White House chicken now! read more
