I brought my family here last night, based on the reputation of great chicken. There were six of us, and the service was perfectly fine. Ambiance was country/folksy - OK, clean. Prices were average. BUT THE FOOD - oh man I was so surprised. My green beans tasted right out of the can, no seasoning, and room temperature. A scoop of mashed potatoes, again, little flavor and barely warm. We picked up a carry out order and literally everything was just thrown in a box together. Even the Cole slaw that is supposed to be cold. Was only 15 minutes to our destination after picking it up and the Cole slaw was so hot it was disgusting and inedible. On Sunday 4/12/26 my 2 sisters their husbands and myself came in for lunch after church. We have done this many times with no problems. my sisters and I had the 2 piece tender and fries dinner, their husbands had something different. On Monday, both my sisters and myself started getting sick, unusual that would happen. Turns out we all 3 had food poisoning from the food here. Normal I wouldn't put this out here like this, but I called the restaurant and asked for a manager, the same person that answered came back and said she could help, I think she said her name was Anita. Historical this place has been phenomenal and when we travel to Ohio from Pittsburgh we go at least twice during our visit and then get some to bring home. The last two times were not great. If you like bland, breaded fried chicken, you'll love this stuff, me, not so much. I did think the chicken here was better than Belgrade Gardens. First time I have gone here. They have been around for 80 years. Food came out hot, had to pull some of the breading off the chicken to cool it down. Very tasty, hot sauce and Cole slaw was killer. Excellent place. I came while on a road trip, and decided to make a detour in search of the famous Barberton chicken. While the location at night looked like the sort of place where you would get robbed and have your organs stolen, the staff was instantly friendly. They were very understanding of our questions, dietary needs, and so on. The food was excellent. Definitely very different than fried chicken anywhere else. Sumptuous portions, delicious mashed potatoes, applesauce, and light vinegar cole slaw. They also have a rich, traditional root beer and cherry soda. All for a super-reasonable price. I haven't had Barberton chicken in over 2 years, since before Covid. I couldn't stand it anymore and embarked on a 50-mile round trip for some yummy chicken. Disappointed is an understatement. The french fries were so overcooked they were like shoe leather, so they replaced them. They were still brown and still not good. The very small breast was cut like that sold in a grocery store, not the rounded shape Barberton chicken is known for, and it didn't taste at all like Barberton chicken. The coleslaw was just ok. Okay y'all. My husbands family swears by this place. We drove an extra 3 hours on our already 6 hour drive to just come out here for the chicken. I just get hype. I got the grilled cheese (the only vegetarian option), with fries, coleslaw and "Dumplings" The waitress told me when ordering the dumplings that they were gross. I should have listened. They tasted like dough that was put in water. I couldn't understand what was giving it that color because it had no flavor. The fries were crispy in some spots, cold in others. Now the grilled cheese was amazing but if you mess up grilled cheese, you have larger issues. The food has gone downhill and the prices have gone up. All of a sudden something that was given to me during my very frequent visits, whether inside or out I am now being charged for without being warned ahead of time. They also now are charging 2+ dollar fee to use a credit card. This was another extra charge that is new. I am sorry to say a once great establishment and Barberton landmark has fallen. The chicken is fair, they have taken away the rye bread several years ago and now they no longer carry backs. Today the hot rice was over cooked and had no flavor just red colored rice. Seems that since they changed ownership it has been on a steady downward spiral. So, stopped here by happenstance while in Barberton. I read the reviews and thought my parents and I should give it a try. We are fans of the various Barberton Chicken spots so after so many positive reviews we decided to have lunch on a Wednesday afternoon. The sign out front says chicken paprikash on it so I figured they must be well known or very confident in that dish to list it on there entrance sign. Upon entry the restaurant has a slightly dated feel but, so do many well established venues. We sat down and we're quickly greeted by the manager and then the waitress. My parents ordered the lunch special, fried chicken, and I ordered the paprikash along with a small plate lunch of grilled chicken, green beans, mashed potatoes and gravy and hot rice. So, please remember this is just my personal opinion. My "grilled" chicken was seasoned with paprika and only paprika so basically no other flavor - disappointing. It also looked like it had been pre-cooked and then seared on a flat top. The green beans were canned, ok that's not out of the norm but, again no seasoning and no flavor at all. No salt, no ham chunks, no bacon just beans straight from the can. The hot rice was good ad falls in line with other Barberton Chicken spots. The mashed potatoes were instant style along with an obvious powdered chicken gravy mix. Sad but, had the most flavor of the entire meal. Now for the paprikash review. I cannot understand why this establishment would boast about the dish, even putting it on their entrance sign and then serving this dish to customers. The "broth" was straight up water with heavy paprika, no chicken broth (if it was it was unseasoned and had zero flavor and might have been made from my chicken breast being boiled). There were three large "dumplings" with no flavor or taste at all. I'm not even sure how you create a basic dumpling and manage to have it come out without any flavor of any kind including even an accidental doughy flavor. The waitress attended to us and asked if I liked the paprikash since I had not eaten very much of the large portion. I politely asked for a container figuring that I could take it home and flavor it, you know with some basics like chicken bouillon, salt pepper etc. The waitress asked "you don't like it do you?". I looked at her and tried to be polite but, I told her that there was absolutely no flavor or taste to it and that it was like water with paprika. The waitress went on to say that the dish was routinely returned 99% of the time. I was astonished and I asked why it was on the sign and boasted if it was so poorly received by the masses. The waitress advised that the staff and customers have brought it to the attention of the owners but, they refuse to let the dish to be altered. Folks, that's poor service, professionalism, customer service, management and a disgrace to the dish. No matter how you like your paprikash like with traditional broth or with the creamy sour cream based sauce you expect flavor OF ANY KIND BESIDES ONLY PAPRIKA!!!! I will say that I only gave this place two stars because my parents enjoyed the fried chicken, hot rice and advised it was "comparable" to other Barberton Chicken spots. The waitress was also helpful and understanding and took the dish off of my bill and returned it to the kitchen. I will not be adding this restaurant to any list of places I would like to return. The dishes are as dated as the decor of wood paneling and the pompous attitude of the owners who are obviously unwilling to listen to staff and customers. read more
