I've been coming to this location for 50 years, since I was about 5-years old. I'm now in central Ohio, but I make the trek up here a few times a year to eat. This time did not disappoint, actually every time is great. The chicken was cooked perfectly and the fries were tasty. The service was just as great as the food. Been a while since we ate here, or should I say ordered from here. As soon as I walked in the door, I was hit with an awful stench that was a cross between rancid oil and sewer gases. I don't know how the people in there were actually eating as it was making me nauseous. As I had already placed a phone order, I went ahead and waited. Very short staffed, new trainee in the kitchen, person taking orders was apologetic but MFing everything. The wife said the food was ok, but not what she remembered. I could barely eat as my nausea followed me from the restaurant. The city inspector needs to pay a frequent visit here soon- or multiple visits. Not recommended for anyone. read more

White house chicken use to be our favorite and I have been going there since I was kid and oftern, that was until they closed the dining room and went all carryout due to Covid. They are now under new ownership and opened the dining room back up so we were looking forward to checking it out. What a disappointment it was! Aside from their famous Barberton Chicken, their hot rice was a favorite but not this time. It tasted terrible, like it had been burnt and was very smoky! When I said something I was told that that batch was indeed burnt but instead of throwing it away, the manager said to serve it . BAD Choice! The chicken had hardly any breading on it and half of it wasnt cooked all the way through. They served the chicken and fries on a plate but all the side dishes were served in small paper containers. Cheap, cheap, cheap! On the plus side, the waitress was so nice and the one reason we didnt just walk out. We were the first order of the day at 11am. Did carry out, clearly the oil hasn't been changed in a very long time. Fries are here in the pic, super dark, bad after taste, chicken coating was damp and dripping with grease. Terrible food. read more

It had been many years since I had been here & everything has changed. It's not a sit down restaurant per se anymore. It stunk like rotten food (should have left then). The chicken had no flavor, the beans were straight out of a can with no seasoning, the mashed potatoes were instant & the coleslaw has changed. The young man at the counter was very pleasant (if not, my rating would be one star) but was having trouble with the order coming up to collect payment. All in all it was a bust & I won't be back. Got all the things I was told to get... and the chicken was so undercooked the juices on my plate were bloody. Will never Come back. Mashed potatoes had no seasoning, the hot sauce was okay but no. M- wow it was slide down hill. My family made it a regular on Sunday. I made the trip to my amazement no real service is available at this pillar of barberton chicken houses. Now customers carry out driven sad to say. Covid was blamed on the move away from a restaurant but I think the owners gave up. Hopkins Garden is a stones through away and still in fully swing. The atmosphere is dated no cup or ice hopefully they kept a few sets of silverware or I'll be eating with my hands. Let hope they still make chicken barberton style. Well you're in barberton but your are not even close to original. Rubber old chicken must rename the rooster on wooster something taste foul on that foul. Been ordering food from this place for years. Now under new owner. Ordered A all white meat dinner and a wing dinner to go last night. Checked the boxes in the car and Hot Sauce that comes with orders was not in the box. Went back inside and had to wait why another customer was complaining about a special they have on line at a certain price and now they were going to charge her a bigger price. She left the order there. Got home and my all white meat dinner had a leg in it. Legs are not white meat. Small over fried wings, over fried chicken breasts and fries that tasted like they were cooked the day before. plannbed On taking everything back but called first. Woman said to not bring it back an owner would call me in the morning. No called so called them. She offered to remake my order today but wouldn't give me my money back. I don't want the food today! Said I should have brought the food back or taken a picture of it. How does a picture tell you what it taste like. This isn't our family's go-to, but I was in the neighborhood last week, so I decided to give it a go. I ordered online and my order was ready promptly in 20 minutes. My dad loved it, my mom thought the chicken breading was a little sweet for her taste, and I thought it was pretty good. Coleslaw was sweeter than I remembered- I appreciate a stronger vinegar flavor, but that may not be the popular opinion. I am trying not to eat a lot of carbs, but I couldn't resist the delicious lard-fried bird. I refrained from eating the fries. (Okay, that's a lie- I did try one or two). How does this place only have 2 reviews? I find it a bit odd that any restaurant that's been around as long as this place has, with as much outside advertising as this place has had (there was an Iron Chef special that was hosted here!), that SOOO many people from Ohio have taken pride in (seriously, appearently if you move away from Ohio, you have chicken from Barberton specifically mailed to you so you can have that taste of home), would have so little following on Yelp. The same goes for Belgrade Gardens, another Barberton Chicken staple. This town is the "Fried Chicken Capital of the World"! And only two people have ever written reviews for White House? Bizarre. With that rant made, let me go into my own experience here at White House. Towards the end of my Thanksgiving trip to meet and visit my girlfriend's family, I was told I just had to come here and experience the ... well, experience, I guess. I've read about the style of fried chicken in this town, was told that if you didn't come from here, you may not 'get it.' But I think I've had enough southern comfort food to appreciate another take on this classic staple. First off, let me just say that the chicken itself is delicious. Yes, the breading is different, and many people would be put off that there is no seasoning in the crust (a major point to anyone trying this the first time). But you need to understand that that's kind of the point to his style. No excess pepper or parpika or thyme or whatever to detract from the natural flavor of the chicken. The breading serves more as a seal to help keep the juices inside instead of overwhelm the protein with salt. In that respect, the crust does a damn fine job. And the second, my most favorite aspect of Barberton Chicken, is that they serve the chicken, 'Depression Style.' This means that they cut the bird into eight different pieces, instead of four, to get as much out of one chicken as possible. The results of this are pieces and sizes most people would balk at, including the 'Chicken Back' which has little meat on it, but resembles as close to a set of baby back ribs as a hen can muster. I personally thought that was pretty cool. Still, and this may be my non-Barberton-ness just 'not getting it', seasoning does go a long way and there's only so much that thick breading fried in lard can do. All of that together, considering just the chicken, makes this place, in my eyes, just slightly below average. But I didn't get into the sides. The cole slaw is simple, vinegar and cabbage. At first this doesn't seem that great. But bite after bite being that fresh and crisp, with the acid from the dressing melting into an impressive sweetness in your mouth was quite fantastic. And then there's the hot sauce. It has the taste of a mexican rice, but with a thinner consistancy that made it perfect for dipping everything into. Definitely the best thing about this place and I could easily come back just for that. So, all in all, not brilliant, but definitely worth trying for yourself if you're in the area. And for everyone that's reading this from Ohio ... WRITE YOUR OWN REVIEWS FOR THIS PLACE! White House chicken has been around forever, show your love! And, most importantly, tell us why your the Fried Chicken Capital of the world. My first time trying a chicken sandwich from Whitehouse today. Really good! A thick chicken breast slathered with mayonnaise and topped with some really good pickles. Was as good or better than that well-known place where people are snaked around at the drive through waiting to order...and priced at only $3.75! I had heard about "Barberton Fried Chicken" for years, but somehow had never tried it. My partner and I finally made the the pilgrimage and decided on White House Chicken. Almost everything was great (or at least as expected) with one exception: the chicken tasted old/expired. You know that smell when you open a package of chicken that is a few days past it's use by date? The chicken had that taste to it, and it ruined what could have been a great meal. If you haven't experienced Barberton fried chicken before, know that it isn't like other fried chicken. There isn't seasoning in the breading, so you really taste the chicken. This would be fine, except as I mentioned above, the chicken tasted like it had turned. The restaurant itself is a throwback. Aside from seeing an occasional cell phone, there is nothing about this restaurant or the people there that would raise the suspicions of a time traveler from 1982. For that reason alone it's worth going. It's actually amazing. Even the prices are a throwback. I couldn't believe how low the prices were. The sides were decent, fresh cut fries would have been good if they weren't soggy. The cole slaw tasted fresh, but was really heavy on the vinegar. The "hot sauce" is interesting, and is a dish consisting of rice swimming in hot sauce. Service was friendly and efficient. I really felt for the servers as we listened to the tables around us complain about really minor and stupid stuff. Anyhow, it's tough to get over the fact that the chicken didn't taste even remotely fresh. If the chicken had been fresh, this would have been a 5 star experience. read more

I've been eating Whitehouse chicken since the 70s. Love the food. Recently I did the online and the picked up. I was asked to pay for it and did. Come to find out I was charged online as well. So I paid twice. Called and talked to someone. She said there was a glitch in the system... that they can't see if a customer was charged online...? And she would have the manager give me a call. I am a little conflicted with this review. As you may have figured out, this is a regional style of chicken. Barberton Style. It is not like normal fried chicken. No seasons on the chicken or flour. It has breadcrumbs in the dry mix. It is fried in lard. All in all it was pretty good, but it is different. I needed to add some salt. It was hot, cooked perfectly. The texture from the coating was crisp but tight. The flavor was good, but as I said, needed salt. Sides: fries, awesome. Coleslaw, basic cabbage and vinegar. Hot sauce, this is a pepper, onion, rice and tomato sauce mixture. It is interesting. It ain't tobacco. The interior is cozy. They have a few sections with boots or tables. Gross. A friend that lives in Canton took a couple of us out-of-towners to the (self proclaimed, I'd assume) Fried Chicken Capitol of the World. We all got the 6 Tenders & 3 sides. The Hot Sauce was played up as a "local thing" so I had to try that, also got slaw and fries. Thank god for the fries. Everything came out in a timely manner, and everything looked great, check the picture I uploaded. Tried the tenders. I don't know if they forgot to season them or what but they were reallly bland. There was no flavor at all, not even salt. It was just not good. All three of us sat there discussing how it was possible for a place known it's chicken to have such mediocre product. Maybe it was presumptuous of me to think that they must have a distinctive quality of ANY kind. And it was a little dry. The slaw was equally bland. Cabbage, vinegar, sugar, meh. The Hot Sauce: glad I tried a local thing, alas not for me. If you've never had it, think soupy Spanish Rice. That's it. Finally the fries! Thank god for the fries. They're hand cut and really pretty good. But then the ketchup was Hunts. I think it's common knowledge that Heinz is the gold standard and Hunts is what you get where someone cuts corners, runny, sweet, and attempting to pollute the one thing on my plate I wanted to eat, the fries! I guess I just don't get it. From the drab dining area with tables and chairs suitable for a church basement rec room, the blandest meal ever, I'm quite amazed this place is 65 years old. Maybe it's me, but I just got back from there for lunch and I have to say, I wasn't that impressed. I still favor Popeye's or Church's over this. I did see that they had freshwater pike like along with their chicken for a surf-n-turf meal but didn't opt for it. I came to maximize the chicken experience so I ordered the classic dark. It was interesting to see the back was served as a piece. Never seen that before although I eat whole rotisserie chickens and the back is always worth picking at. Overall, the food wasn't bad, it just didn't live up to the hype. The slaw was so-so as well as the hot sauce, nothing to rave about. The fries were pretty good. I wouldn't go out of my way out to come here. I've heard that Belgrades was family related with White House so it seems like the food will be similar. I don't think I'll need to make a trip there as I think it'll be just about the same. The food is not under seasoned at all. I don't know what the obsession American's have with salt, but I felt like I had my sodium for then week eating the chicken alone. read more

I really don't understand what all the hype is about this place. I know several people who live here locally and that's all they talk about, and from the reviews from the locals, the same thing...but I really think that this is just that...a local favorite, nothing outstanding, just something you love if you grew up here. I ordered the four piece meal which I was assuming would be like any other 4 piece chicken strip meal for around $8...I was very wrong. The chicken was twice the size of any other "chicken strip" I've ever had, huge, so big I wonder how they make any money. My sides, green beans and "hot sauce" as well as fries were pretty generous too. However, the food wasn't outstanding. The chicken was kind of hard and the breading had absolutely no flavor to it. The hot sauce is a local thing and I didn't particularly care for it. The fries were outstanding and the green beans were pretty good. I couldn't even eat half of my meal so I took the other half home and used it for lunch the next day. But as far as taste is concerned, Raising Canes makes a way better chicken strip. Lots of crispy flavor, super juicy chicken, and a matching sauce. Here they gave me sauces from store bought packets which was very disappointing. You can't beat the price here for the portion size, I will give them that. But you can also tell that this is the type of place where cheap people come to eat and old people come and run up a $50 bill and leave $0.50c as a tip, it would suck to be a server here. I honestly can't say I would go back if I was in the area again, it wasn't good enough to make me want to return without trying many of the other businesses in the area first. Someone recommended Barberton for chicken, so we gave this place a try. The chicken tenders were juicy and tasty, but the side dishes were so disappointing. Canned green beans with no seasoning, fries with no seasoning and not crisp at all, mashed potatoes with no texture (instant?), hot sauce (a Spanish rice) was too soupy. After hearing about Barberton chicken for years my wife and I stopped here on a beautiful Saturday afternoon. I'll keep the review brief. The unsweetened iced tea tasted like water with a HINT of tea, the rice with hot sauce was not a very appealing side (and I REALLY like hot sauces), and the chicken smelled and tasted old. I want to give this place 5 stars, but it was my first Barberton, Ohio chicken run. The chicken is perfect and the hot sauce has addictive properties. Best chicken breast of my life, and I saved it for last because I lean dark meat. Really amazing on the juicy and tender scale. The taste of this chicken is on another level. They don't season the breading, so the chicken flavor shines. Cole slaw has only a vinegar dressing, which actually balances out the fresh cut fries and chicken well. Tuesday is $7 four piece dinner day and that value is worth the drive down from Cleveland! I brought one of them home for a friend. I can't imagine this place being hit or miss. It was a big hit! White house is always hit or miss. One time is fabulous....next time , not so much. Tonite was the latter. I'm a single mother...and my daughter and I opted to split a large dinner...and then I added an extra thigh. Just honestly trying to save money.. plus her and I can't eat all that food. And $14 something for a 5 piece chicken dinner isn't cheap. Well the food came out, and being knowledgeable in the industry...and going here like a bazillion times......I could tell right away this was old chixken re fried. I was going to say something, but I didn't. It wasn't hot at all....lukewarm at best. The hot rice was very thick/old as well. ... And again, if I didn't know any better- it would of been fine. But I did. It's pretty bad that they do this..I mean I've been coming here for over 20 years and it just makes me loose respect for them...you know?? I know when it's a re fired order and when it's fresh... Bread was hard too when we were served it. It was like they scorned us for trying to be frugal????? And it kinda alarmed me because as we were arriving a big party was leaving....and as we sat there, multiple to go orders came in. So I know they had to been cooking some fresh chicken in that kitchen tonite. We just didn't get any of it. But, it is what it is...I got a mediocre at best-- dinner tonite. Maybe next time they will do the right thing. I just hope I don't get sick because it didn't seem up to temp. I may call the manager tmrw and tell them about it.
