Homemade German (hot) potato salad was the highlight with the fish fry (perch) along with the seasoned fries and delicious juicy burger with grilled onions and lettuce and tomato! A nice breakfast and lunch restaurant. It was seasonally decorated for Valentine's day. There is a large lunch counter surrounded by booth and table seating. This place has a modern décor. I was here for lunch. The prices are very reasonable. I noticed the ATM in the corner and found out hey are cash or check only. The waitress was friendly and attentive. My coffee cup never ran dry. I had chili and a hot dog. The chili had a good flavor, but needed a little spice. There was also macaroni in it which makes it a chili mac, not indicated on the menu. The hot dog was a good quality dog, from a local meat market I suspect. It was very similar to Salmon's hot dogs. The bun however, fell apart and I had to eat it with a fork. The chili, coffee, and hotdog was about $6.00. This place was worth checking out. I will have to try the breakfast menu. read more

Old fashioned county breakfast at it's finest and the best coffee around. The service here is spectacular and prices are reasonable. I recommend the Country Fried Steak. Save room for desert, they always have homemade pie. read more

We arrived and they seated another group before us even though we were there 5 mins longer. The side pork was over cooked. They don't take credit cards and their ATM was out of service (had to walk to the bank next door). The rest of the food was "meh". Won't be back. read more

Fabulous little restaurant with wonderful food, friendly staff and incredibly low prices. I try to make it in at least once on any trip home to Algoma. This time, we stopped for breakfast. I couldn't resist my favorite ham & cheese with scrambled eggs croissant. My companion opted for the nest....hash browns topped all the fixings. Went to the Village Kitchen for the smelt plate special on Wednesdays during Lent. What a disappointment! This is a great little restaurant that has wonderful breakfasts at reasonable prices but the smelt plate at $8.25 was a disgrace. The smelt were cooked until every bit of moisture and flavor was removed. They had no taste and that makes me assume they had been frozen for quite some time. In the past smelt has been served here that were flavorful and fresh but I don't know what the heck happened to create this drastic change. This was my last smelt plate at the VK. read more

Ordered baked cod with drawn butter. Dinner included cole slaw, rye bread and choice of potato. The cod must have been frozen for a long time. It had no flavor at all. When dipped in the butter provided with the meal the flavor was still tasteless. The butter seemed to have no flavor as well. I assume the butter was dipped without stirring to include the flavorful butterfat content. The waitress was very pleasant and helpful but the meal was very disappointing. read more

My family and I have enjoyed the Village Kitchen many times. It is owned and operated by a family of excellent cooks. Daily specials are made from scratch and very moderately priced. Soups and deserts are home made and very good. Clientele is mostly local and extremely loyal. read more
