Village Market was a random drop in. noticed all patrons were at the front counter buying lotto tickets. semi large store, items neatly stacked. easy to see at a glance where everything was located. Village has a large variety of drinks, wines, hard liquor, snacks, convenience items. drink: knee deep brewery, "breaking bud" 6.99, 6.5%, 22 oz. -hard to read print on bottle, boozy, heavy ipa, hoppy -most big bottled beers unpriced. on draught: -clerk told me where to find restroom when i asked. friendlier tone than at other biz i visited. read more

I stopped in Village Market when I was visiting family and we went to a concert in the adjacent park. But what I saw was satisfactory in my book. This market had a large selection of adult beverages, which is why we stopped in. Feeling like trying the hot new thing, I got my first White Claw out of the cold section, and my husband found a beer he liked. We had fun scoping out the rest of the selection, which was extensive. And because the concert was going on, we were able to open our beverages outside and drink them while walking around the park, according to the cashier. Village Market also had a selection of groceries. Sure, the prices are a bit higher than at a normal grocery, but you're paying for convenience. The store appeared clean, well stocked and well organized. What more could you want from a convenience store? read more

This market is awesome.. it's steps away- literally from the cute little park. I went in and the selection of beverages both soft and alcoholic is tremendous. Icee machine, a big selection really of everything. I went in for a soda and was overwhelmingly surprised. My younger kid opened some gum so I bought that as well. The clerk gave my kids each a dum dum lollipop. I was short a penny, he told me it is ok and pulled from the take a penny leave a penny dish. This place has a lot of great alcoholic drinks that are either hard to find at other stores or I have never seen before. It's a easy walk from the park to the store for snacks and what not when there are concerts on the weekend in the grove. The only bad part about this place is the asshole that works at the register. No hello, no how are you, just a scowl. He didn't ask for my ID which is odd because I'm still 21 so I young enough to be questioned. read more

They also made a big deal about me pouring me and my kids slurpee, because he was apranoid about a mess...Guess what douche its a friggin market, deal with the mess your still getting paid. This is a great store, and have been a customer since my childhood in the 90's. The owner and his family are the best. As for the two negative feedbacks - ignore ... "Deal with the mess, that's your job"... really? Douche? Really... Nice review... thanks for wasting the English language. Yes, of course they follow the kids around in the store.... Guess what - kids in Clayton (while a great city - I love it) is not immune to shoplifting, and some like to steal - which is the market's issue to deal with. This happens all the time, especially after school gets out. As for prices - uh, yeah... it is expensive to have a business in Clayton, so they need to charge more. It's not Costco, or even Safeway. Wake up people. Give this place a chance and your business. read more

Owners/cashiers can be rude but they have been since I was a kid. Prices can be a little high as well. They do have a large assortment and variety of alcohol and snacks. I will still support this local business over cvs up the street though any day. read more

I strongly agree with Colleen's review. I will go out of my way and drive to Safeway before I go here again. The man behind the counter was rude, abrasive, and extremely unfriendly. I am sympathetic to their exceedingly overpriced groceries but when I asked if he had any free cups to accompany my two beverages for my grandchildren, he begrudgingly told me that I could take one small soda cup. I guess I was taking advantage of his "generosity" when I asked if he would mind if I took some ice and that is when he told me it would cost 75 cents!I asked "really?" thinking he was jesting to which he replied "I already gave you a free cup which is a dollar." I went to Village Market because Cup O'joes was closed and I NEEDED coffee after New Years! Why not give another chance in the New Year? Well, the owner wasn't as clingy (good) and he certainly doesn't know the difference between Capaccino (spelled wrong) and a Latte, but whatever. The coffee service machine thing-a-ma-bob, had good coffee and good HOT hot chocolate. It made the walk along the Cardinet Trail beautiful. So, I will allow my children to go in there again and will be sure to visit their booze section for Concert in the Park. Willing to give their Indian Food a try when I have time on my hands, but not willing to eat their hard bread. (Did I mention I miss Canesa's being nearby, with their soft, amazing bread and tomato salad!) read more

I've been going to the "Blue Store" (the old one was painted blue) since I was about 6. I would ride my bike down there with friends when I was young to buy a blue Slush Puppee and some candy. Those were the days. The "Blue Store", although no longer blue, is still there, despite being burned down about 6-7 years ago. 13 years later I am still a regular customer. Selection here is a little better than your average convenience store, but prices are about the same. Sam (owner) and his son (Johnny) are nice guys, and pretty shrewd businessmen. I would recommend this place to anyone as a place to pick up basic items/needs, or to pick up a slurpee on a hot day. Its definitely a part of Clayton. read more

I have been going to this market for a long time. I even returned after it was rebuilt after their fire. However, What happened the other day made me realize how cheap and petty they can be in this store. I bought my daughter an ice cream sandwich and we realized it was partially melted and refrozen. They grumbled but they gave us another one, first problem, grumbling over what 75 cents? When we opened the next one we realized it was VERY stale in that it tasted like the freezer "freezer burnt". When we asked if we could just get something else they said they already gave us another one so we had to eat what we had, problem 2. So basically we had to throw away the $1.75 ice cream that was stale and BTW they continue to sell. So for what cost them maybe 75 cents they lose a customer. Let's do some math... if I spent just $20 a month there and now nothing and say I've shopped there for the last 10 years, it's been longer, they lose $2400 in revenue....That's a great return on investment. I know that small markets are rare but if they can't even lose 75 cents how are they ever going to stay open?...that's right by keeping a 10 year old from getting another ice cream...
