Villager Nursery has a nice selection of plants and their staff has good knowledge, both suited for growing plants in this mountainous short growing season climate. I don't know their overall or official stance on customers returning the thousands of plastic pots that plants are sold in, but I'd hope they encourage customers to return the emptied pots, for the nursery to then return to the providers that they get their plants from. Also, I don't know if Villager Nursery sells any thing physically toxic, like RoundUp or other glyphosate products, or synthetic fertilizers .... Or socioeconomically toxic like Monsanto/Bayer products or MiracleGro products - or if they lean towards working WITH nature, like selling only organic fertilizers and not selling chemical pesticides - but I'd hope so! I haven't gotten to spend much time there, but based on the help I've gotten from a couple people (Liam is the only name I remember offhand), I would recommend them! read more

I have nothing but amazing things to say about Villager Nursery!! They have an incredible selection of native plants and plants hardy to the region. Especially impressive for April in our climate! Not only that, but the staff were so helpful, knowledgeable, and friendly. They walked us through the entire nursery and pointed out all of the natives for us, and knew the light and water requirements of each plant. In the town of Truckee is the Villager Nursery. Not only do they sell a big variety of plants, flowers, vegetables, trees, succulents, garden art, gardening tools, supplies... they also provide landscape and design services. Super great! They even offer classes, seminars, and workshops. The majority of them are free. The classes are taught by experienced botanists, arborists, and garden professionals. Checkout their website and Facebook for further deets. The nursery setting is beautiful and quite peaceful to walk through. The garden art displayed throughout adds to a tranquil vibe. The pricing is on point. Not big box store cheap but not overpriced either. The staff is approachable if you have questions. During the summer there is ample enough staff walking about tending to the inventory. Went today trying to start some landscaping. I was looking for drout tollorent type of plants. Every one was super helpful. I felt that the prices were good and the plants were very healthy. I got a bunch of lilacs and a few other things. Will for sure come back when I'm ready to tackle more projects. read more

I stopped here for the first time (and then repeated visits) this summer for flowers, dirt, etc. Every time I went and had questions about flowers, soil, sun exposure, etc they were very helpful. Then I just went back and they had a great selection of fresh wreaths and Christmas trees in various sizes. The place smelled great! Found the big wreath I need for over my garage and another for my front door. They even said if I wanted a bigger one, thy would order 1 for me. But the one they had was perfect :) I will continue to use them for ALL of my flower/garden AND Christmas flora needs :) read more

The most knowledgeable staff I have ever encountered in a nursery. They know their stuff...and that is important when trying to garden in a mountain environment. They can tell you which plants are best in which environments around your house, and won't steer you wrong. I had wanted to plant a few things and was actually told they wouldn't work very well at my house. Very helpful with loading items, and directing me to where I could find things. Go here if you are landscaping and need good, healthy plants. I think only one plant I bought isn't working where I planted it...but that could be because of inconsistent watering, and a really hot spell after I planted it. read more

They had a large selection of healthy plants to choose from as well as gardening decor. The day I went, there were multiple employees or "helpers" everywhere. Not one person asked if I needed help the hour I was wandering around looking for what I needed. I asked one girl, she stated, "I'm just a helper", and kind of blew me off. A few other times I'd ask someone if they had something and they would say "it's in the tent", or "over there", or "we don't have it", and then I'd find it or I'd walk around for 15 minutes with absolutely no luck finding what they said was there. It was the most frustrating, garden shopping experience. I'd rather save $$$ and go somewhere else that offers help on top of locals discounts. But... it is a pretty place to wander. read more

Awesome nursery. Lots of localy grown plants, shrubsc and trees from localy sourced seeds and cuttings. The whole staff is great, especially Eric. He knows so much and is constantly learning more. Prices are a little higher then big box stores, but definitely not overpriced. Plants are already aclimated to our area, unlike Reno nurseries. Local knowledge of the area and plant life is paramount to none. These guys really know their stuff! Cons: if your allergic to cats, they have to cats. Pros: they have two awesome shop cats, Hops and Barley. Plus every other aspect of their store is amazing. Pro tip: use biosol three times a year and nothing else. On the recommendation of friends, I started going to The Villager Nursery several years ago, and they've never give me a reason to look elsewhere for advice, seeds, and plants. Eric, especially, has consistently given me great advice. He helped me turn my yard from a brown dirt patch into one full of native grass, Sierra wildflowers, and cool bushes/trees. I also appreciate that they always talk my language because I am a total novice. Such a great family owned business with knowledge out the you know what! I have been shopping there for years, always with tons of growing questions for my veggie garden.
