This year I picked up a hat with good coverage for my son's. Along with some souvenirs, my son wanted to bring home for his friends (Truckee stickers). Besides my positive experience, the store seems to have just about everything from grills, too fishing gear amongst other things that you would carry an Ace Hardware store. They also had a nice varying selection of said categories. At the checkout counter there was a younger girl who welcomed me and ready to answer questions, I bought my hat, and I was on my way. My family and I went out to find a Christmas tree like we always do every year. We typically go to…read moreApple Hill but wanted to try a different place so we venture out to Snowy Peaks Christmas Tree Farm. We walk for at least an hour through the trees to find a barren land with poorly shaped trees in terrible condition. So we end up buying a pre-cut tree for double the price (which they import in from a different location). The tree is put on top of the car by seemingly teenagers and only a mile down the road, it falls off the car. So now I have to pull over just to secure the tree back on the car. Here we are, on December 21 and the tree has fully died, despite rushing it home and immediately putting it in water after cutting the trunk. This place seems to be run poorly and maybe even sets up a model for people to end up buying their more expensive, dying, pre-cut trees. They have surely made a Christmas memory for me I won't forget.

The staff are wonderful and the "cutters" do their best to make selecting and cutting the tree a magical experience. They start the tree cutting for you, with their own saws (you don't need to bring your own), so the tree regrows properly - but they each let us take turns. Not as easy as they make it look! So helpful at every step of the process - including free wrapping and tying it to the car. We found a beautiful 9' Turkish Nordman with blue hues on the bottom and it has barely dropped any needles after the initial shaking!!

I also recommend bringing cash to tip the cutters who cut your tree and bring it to the front for you. They also usually have a cash only line to pay for your tree which moves way faster than the credit card only line. Lastly, you should get a hot cocoa before you start looking so you have something warm to hold. It's a little pricey but the experience, service, and quality is what keeps us going back!

Once you are parked you'll notice a stream that runs through the property with fish, a fire to keep yourself warm, a small room where they're selling ornaments and food, and a truck carrying people to and from. Before boarding the truck you're given a saw to cut down your own tree. You literally are taken up some hills in the back of an old truck. Holding on for the bumpy ride is expected but once you're out you can find the perfect tree waiting for you and your family. Once you've walked the distance to Mordor and selected your tree. You board a truck heading down the hills. I recommend getting an ornament or two and a snack from the concession stand. This trip can be somewhat physical, so folks unable to walk up hills should stay near the fire with some hot chocolate to stay warm.

The owner and all the staff are polite, cheerful, genuinely friendly and so very helpful. They have trucks to take you up to where the trees are and you get to pick one out and cut it yourself. It was such a fun experience for my almost 2 year old who loved the cars and running around in the woods. Obviously prices will be higher than just going to Home Depot for a free but it is so worth it for the fun outdoor experience and memories my family got to make. Needless to say I was over joyed with my experience and can't wait to go back next year.

They have the cutest shop with great sweatshirts! Lucky for me because I forgot to pack something warm enough!

They also have the cutest pots, like the snail with its springy little antennas and built in drain. The pots and plants are "boutique" so they are more expensive, but everything we've gotten we have loved and felt was worth it. Lots of (the cuter) pots don't have a hole for drainage, but you can just get masonry (ceramic) drill bits and do that yourself if needed. I highly recommend Good Anya for smaller and unique plants, lots of interesting pots, and for personalized plant care.

Villager Nursery is layed-out as the site allowed with paths, stairs and inclines out and back under trees and along walls with loads of demonstration gardens to inspire and educate. Always a huge selection of herbs and vegetables for this tough climate. Great website resources. Villager started as a florist in 1949 and began selling a few shrubs in spring 1976. The current owners have degrees in Ecology / Plant Physiology and Molecular Biology / Botany & Horticulture and have been operating the nursery since the early 1980's (plant nerds for-sure). read more

Villager, is the place to get amazing feedback on plants that work in our high sierra landscape. Eric is over the top informative. I usually end up buying the entire place after a conversation about the plants with Eric. To top it off they are philanthropic to local organizations like KidZone Museum, and Far West Nordic. If you're gonna hire them to put in basic drip rock and a few plants, they're probably fine although where they lay the irrigation lines makes no sense at all, and makes it very difficult to plant after the fact which I had to do because 30% of what they planted died the first winter . They installed the water feature that has some type of leak underneath it because it is killing the evergreen trees behind it because they are getting overwatered. One of the drains for the water feature is a pipe that was 3 feet from the French drain that goes to the street so it was constantly a lake filled with water. The the irrigation pipes and electrical were run after the trees were planted right down the center section of that planting area which made it impossible to dig and replace the dead trees. I had to hire someone else to come out and reroute the irrigation line and the low-voltage lighting so that Moana could come out and plant replacement trees. Nothing they did make sense or was logical. It seemed to be the down and dirty quickest and cheapest way to get it done.

Three days later I noticed one was dying because of an aphid inspection…read more I called them and they said bring it back for exchange. 30 min later I showed up and was told they do not do exchanges for plants as they are living things and if my dog peed on it they would have no way to know. When I insisted I had talked to someone and I expected them to honor the phone call, that person came and let me exchange my plant. Poor training or poor customer service, either way not a pleasant experience.

And, they delivered it all pretty inexpensively. If you're doing a garden project in the Sierra, especially one involving big trees, I recommend talking to them.
