We were at Vinny's June 20th. Our first time at the Iowa location. Our server was Alaina M. Who's customer service was OUTSTANDING !!! The food was just as good as the service. The atmosphere was great and our party of 4 was not rushed. I really have to give a big thumbs up to Alaina who made our night. I was staying at the Hotel Julien a block away, so I called for a carry out order. The woman on the phone was polite and my order was ready in 15 minutes. I wish she had reminded me that what I ordered was pretty spicy, more than I was expecting. We've given this place several chances, and each time after our first visit 3 years ago, it disappoints. I can't believe that an Italian restaurant can't get their act together and make good Italian food. The food has been inconsistent each time. My daughter had the ravioli with cheese and the cheese tasted sweet and odd. My spaghetti with olive oil, basil and pepper has little to no flavor. My wife ordered pizza that came when the rest of us were done with our dinner. The waitress was kind and apologetic, and discounted $5 off our pizza ave offered us a free dessert to take home. Our waiter was fantastic, but the food was not good. The salad contained wilted and past-due greens. The garlic bread was just meh. My lasagna was so weird: Rather than having ground meat in the sauce, the lasagna had layers of noodles, cheese, and tomato basil sauce built around a single meat patty. It was a very disjointed dish. The wine list was not impressive (their chianti classico by the glass is a good option though). My husband liked his baked seafood pasta. Nice decor on the walls. We have been driving by this restaurant en-route to Des Moines from Green Bay for 11 years and finally stopped for a late lunch (2:30). We were immediately greeted and seated by the hostess (we were the only ones in the restaurant upon arrival but when we left two other parties had come in). Waitress was very friendly and the decor/ambience (brick walls, old hardwood floors, lots of pictures of Italian families plus Italian songs playing in the background) were the best features. Unfortunately the food was ok, not great. The salad dressing lacked distinctive flavor and the garlic bread had too much Parmesan cheese and very little detectable garlic. The spaghetti olio was good but after eating a dish like that, I expect to taste garlic for hours and don't even feel like I ate garlic. Hubby's Italian beef sub was huge with lots of meat was good but not stand out. Dessert redeemed, however. The featured chocolate cake was layers of creamy dark, milk, and white chocolate on a cookie crust and hubby enjoyed the Spumoni. The server was friendly and helpful, especially with our ordering a takeout meal for a family member who was unable to join us at the restaurant. The Dubuque Vinny Vanucchi's is the younger and slightly less charming brother of the Galena, IL Vinny Vanucchi's. Since it's open this past winter, We've visited 3 times and all three times, have walked away with a "meh, it was ok - but I wish we would have traveled the extra 13 miles to the Galena location" feeling. My go to dish has been the Eggplant Parmesan at the Galena location. Given the DBQ location has overlooked this great dish on their standard menu, I went for the Nancy's Manicotti - and really enjoyed them. My boyfriend ordered the Steak Marsala and really ranted and raved about it. I tried it, and found it pleasing, but the amount of sauce on the steak seemed like it was over powering the meat and my taste buds would be bored after a number of bites. He reassured me, that wasn't the case with the steak as he ate his last bite. (I think this also had something to do with the fact it was his 1st steak since arriving home after a 13 month deployment in Iraq. :)) Pros: * Garlic Bread - (not as greasy as Galena) * Vinaigrette / House Dressing on Salad - use garlic bread to soak up extra on the boom of the salad bowl. * Bloody Mary's - Maybe we were just in a general good mood, but we both agreed their Bloody Mary's were a contender one of the top 5 best bloodys in the DBQ area * location - closer to home for us! * The decor is a little more stylish than the Galena location and doesn't have those way-over-done plastic grapes cluster around every corner. I tried lasagna and my wife had chicken alfredo. Her chicken was excellent. My lasagna may have been reheated, and not throughly reheated. Salad was fair, but the house dressing was nothing special. We were meeting family for lunch and drove to Dubuque which was in between. We had a reservation for six and were seated quickly and a nice big table. The menu was extensive and had lots of options including salads, pizza, sandwiches, and pasta. The server was friendly and effiicient. They had a good selection of draft beer and we had Sierra Nevada and a good local beer. Our table ordered a variety of food and all of it was good with generous portions. The soup was Italian wedding soup which was a good mix of spinach, pasta, and mini meatballs. The pizza was pretty good but the best choices were the eggplant parmigian and the Italiam beef sandwich. The eggplant was very thinly sliced eggplant lightly breaded with sauce and cheese over linguine with red sauce. It was delicious and so large we took a good anount to go. Not our first time here with a group for a business dinner, but it is our last if I am involved. The healthiest fare on the menu was a N.Y. Strip with a nice lot of mixed vegetables. Veggies were great, but the N.Y. shoe leather was... well two of us could only make it through half of it! Medium rare was medium well. Starters were not meant for a group...meatballs were two large meatballs presented without a serving utensil....use your fork! The rubbery Calamari's only saving grace was the sauce. All the entrees were over sauced....greasy disgusting sauced in a quantity that could easily drown a Navy Seal. The wait staff tried but were clearly below par, not really well trained to be ahead of the game. Serve the family style salad.....but oh, uh....oh...wait fora clean plate for the salad. Stopped by this place this past weekend due to a article I had read about good places to eat in Dubuque, and I gotta say I am so glad we did. Our server was amazing, friendly, funny, attentive, cordial. We had Tehran special which was an Eggplant Parm with linguini, also ordered Spaghetti with meatballs and Chicken Alfredo with pasta. Everything was delicious. Tasteful and they serve a lot of food, so we had plenty of left overs. Their salad and bread was off the hook! Yummy. Had a couple of beers and a glass of wine as well & our bill was about $60. I didn't think that was bad for great food and great ambiance. This place is nicely decorated. So warm and cozy! Very disappointed given we were told the place was very tasty. The water tasted terrible. That may be a city problem but a warning and a bottled option would have been nice. Service was very very slow. I tried giving the benefit of the doubt and hoped the server was simply overwhelmed. After seeing only a few other tables and several other servers I had to let go of that excuse. She was slow. Food was mediocre at best. The lobster on the seafood plate was like a large prawn and overcooked. The sausage ragu, while large, had five small pieces of sausage. The chicken Marsala was edible but not good. The manocotti was fine. If you've had good sangria, stay away from this sangria. We were told it's homemade and perhaps the water ruins it. I want light' trips, and we had definitely ruled out all the mall places. We were headed for a roasted pizza place on the main street we had seen before. When we arrived, we found it was defunct. However, a Vinny Vanucchi's had opened up over the Busted Lift, one of our favorite bars. We had eaten at VV's in Galena, so we had high hopes. And, I got my garlic pasta! So warm, so delicious. In a nutshell: great atmosphere, OK food. If you're looking for a romantic place to wine and dine someone downtown, Vinny's has oodles of atmosphere. There are candles on each table, and the owners have gone with the "kitchen pantry" theme -- there are sideboards full of bottles and cans of olive oil, tomatoes, wine and and pasta along the walls. It all works together to create a warm, intimate mood. The food is, in my opinion, nothing earth-shattering. They do great with Italian staples like Chicken Parmigiano, baked and stuffed pastas, and all varieties of fettuccine. Most dishes are either tomato or cream based. They have non-wheat pasta for those wheat sensitive. My friend ordered it and was very pleased We enjoy Vinny's in Galena and are equally happy with their Dubuque restaurant. The best time to go is for lunch because the prices are lower and it's not as busy. We've been there 3 times and have been consistently happy. Our server was attentive and professional, the food was perfect. Their endless salad and bread alone is worth stopping by. My favorite dishes are chicken picatta and pollo compomare (you can order it mild to medium if you don't like spicy). At the start we ordered a wine white and Vinnys special martini. Both were really good. To start off we ordered their homemade fries which were very crisp and super tasty. Next came our bread and salad, both probably the best we have tasted. With a successful meal so far, we were looking forward to our pasta. However, it was kind of a let down. I ordered fettuccine Alfredo and my partner ordered a carbonara. We felt as if the ingredients were cheaped out on. My fettuccine noodles didn't seem all the way cooked through and seemed to lack a flavor. All in all I would give it a 4/5 with the irony being this is an Italian restaurant and their pasta wasn't the best. read more

First thing the server was great considering our group of 17. The food was ok at best. My tortilini with peas, ham and mushrooms had NO flavor, portion was large but the dish was served more like soup in the bowl. My dinner guest meal was the seafood pasta meal. Big disappointment. Lots praise for garlic bread, not sure why, it too was only so ,so. If there had been flavor, more salt and garlic it would have been the big "O" Garden. Not on my list of places to return too.
