Vinology has established themselves as a great destination in downtown Ann Arbor. Kristin, the owner just celebrated 20 years, which in the restaurant industry is an accomplishment in itself. We enjoy Vinology for the farm to table fresh menu offerings and seasonal changes they offer. The have a small section of tables outside, which is where like to dine, during nice weather. The inside bar area is warm, cozy and dark with a very nice ambiance. We went with sharable's this evening which included: Marinated Olives, castelvetrano, cuquillo, manzillia & gordal olives marinated in citrus, cinnamon and clove. Nice portion and selection of Olives and very flavorful. We paired the Olives with a Charcuterie and Cheese tray; beehive pour me a slice cheddar, Beecher flagship smoked gruyere blend house flavored citrus goat cheese, colosseum genoa salami, maestro 600 day aged prosciutto and spianata piccante. The meats and cheeses were all very good, and great chefs choices. The board also includes fig jam and a whole grain mustard, crackers and tasted crostini's. A nice selection of wines and craft cocktails. We enjoyed a nice bottle of Chardonnay. Definitely a good venue to check out when in Ann Arbor. Amazing wine selection and staff here! It's a really nice vibe. I just popped in to sit at the bar and it was chill. The short rib with mashed potatoes and asparagus was very good! Secret win of the dish was the asparagus! The mashed was a bit to creamy for me but overall the dish was good. read more

Welcome back to the dark cozy dining room of Vinology! Happy hour menu is fire! Still the half off glasses and drafts. The food is excellent. I tried the fried gnocchi this visit. It's heavy and definitely comfort food but delicious. Service is sweet and perfect amount of attention. The patrons on the other hand can be loud and annoying. She sees me looking at her when she gets loud and at this point she's doing it on purpose. Holding court is a bad look babe. Your table of 4 friends don't care if the whole place hears about your kids' habits or how they are so like Julius. Calm tf down. You're not the only one here. I hope they cut her off soon. Such are the hazards of a wine bar. I used to be an obsessed regular. I might start to be again. They do have the BEST PATIO. They also have brunch. We went to Vinology for our 12th anniversary and every aspect of the night made our celebration better. Our sever was professional and friendly, attentive without interrupting every five minutes to see if everything was fine. The food was so great. Perfectly cooked, with deep flavors that left you wanting more when you were done, even though you were full. The dessert was also perfection. We've been going to Vinology since 2010, years before we got married there, and have never had one experience there that I'd rate less than 4 out of 5 stars, and almost always 5/5 stars. It was nice to get inside out of the heat and the seats were comfortable. The server was very nice but the food is where they fell down. The strawberry spinach salad was tiny with soggy berries and soggy spinach. The fried goat cheese ball on top was rubbery and not delicious. I left hungry after a 15$ salad. Updating my review for brunch - I still think dinner is the stand out here, but if you're looking for a "bottomless" mimosa/Bloody Mary/aperol spritz spot, this is the spot! Vinology is also a great spot for celebratory occasions as they hook it up with free dessert - such a nice touch! For brunch, we had the: * FRESH DOUGHNUTS (cinnamon sugar, raspberry jam) - kind of more like churro/funnel-cake-like circles because of how dense this was but I'm not complaining! Pretty tasty still. * CLASSIC CAESAR (baby romaine, anchovy, parmesan crisps, creamy caesar dressing) - Whole anchovies is bold, but I enjoyed it! * CHICKEN & WAFFLE (buttermilk fried chicken, fried eggs, hollandaise) - the fried chicken on its own tasted kind of dry and underseasoned BUT once I got the runny fried egg going with some maple syrup and hot sauce, then it was actually pretty perfect. Maybe they planned for it to be that way. Also the waffle was a nice malt-y water so no comlaints! * SHORT RIB CHIMICHURRI OMELET (braised short rib, ricota cheese, home fries, toast) - one thing Vinology does VERY WELL is potatoes. Whether they're the stand out french fries or these home fries, they're always well seasoned and have the right texture. I rarely give a 5 star review. We had dinner here last night. The food was excellent, all of us concurred. I had the Bolognese. My wife had the Salmon, and her brother had the Whitefish. As dining at a place like this should be an experience, our server did a great job to make it a pleasant one. We've been here before and are sure to return. This is a great place to get a flight or have a glass of cognac by the fire, also. Kudos to the staff. read more

Just had dinner there with 2 friends, and a fabulous time was had by all! We had the charcuterie board, a half-order of the bolognese, the pommes frites, and the roasted grape salad, all shared. We also shared a lovely bottle of merlot/cabernet. All the food was of excellent quality and taste. At first we were doubtful about the roasted grape salad, but after the first bite we were converts. There was enough food for three women to eat (too much) *and* take some home! The service was superb, our waitress, Maya (?) was attentive without being obtrusive, and she was cheerful and accommodating. We hope to sit in her section at our next visit. We had an early reservation on a Saturday, so it was low-key and not at all noisy, despite a large group quite near to our table. The table was large enough to hold the multiple small plates, and the overall vibe was warm and welcoming. We were too full for dessert, and we will definitely return to try that too! This was an absolutely delicious brunch! For a place with name like Vinology, we didn't actually drink any alcohol. It was a bit early in the day, and while the idea of mimosas was tempting, there was just much to do for some day drinking. All I can speak for is the piedmontese ribeye and scrambled eggs which just made my stomach sing. I wanted to inhale the whole thing in one sitting but ended up really only eating half and taking the rest home. Everyone else was very very happy with their meals, and they very easily added on a grilled chicken to a salad upon request (despite the option not being advertised anywhere on their menu). Our waitress was incredibly patient and helpful as we sorted through what we wanted, and overall we had a really positive experience. I'm not sure what this place is like in the evenings, but we went at about noon on a Saturday afternoon and there was barely anyone there, so don't worry about necessarily having a reservation if that's the window you're looking at. We'll absolutely look forward to coming to Vinology again sometime soon, hopefully in the evening this time around! read more

Stopped in for a cocktail on the patio the other night. They offer a decent Beer selection, for my husband and of course a nice selection of Wines and Cocktails. I have been wanting to eat here for years. Never thought I could with food intolerances. After speaking with our server and inquiring about the food. I was happy to learn that they work well with food allergies. However; the kitchen was closed. We had a few drinks and returned a few days later for food. Sangria Finally a Sangria not diluted down with a bunch of syrups and juices!! The process they use for there Sangria, which I was told is award winning, is interesting and you should definitely ask about it when you stop in. It was very good. Food I ordered the Tuna Carpaccio. Minus fennel (I can't have it) it was delicious and fresh. No fishy taste whatsoever. Beautifully plated. Next time I will ask for the parmesan on the side. There was a little too much on it for my liking. The Olive Oil and Capers really balanced it will as the fennel would have I'm sure. We also ordered the Baked Brie and Warm Baguette. Equally delicious. I had to order some of the toppings on the side so my picture will look a bit different than their standard dish. A week later...... Came in to get dinner. I was going to get the Ribeye but unfortunately they were sold out. So they worked with me to make a great Salmon dish. Without Garlic. It came with Peruvian Potatoes, Spinach, and Artichokes. It was delicious and I can't wait to get it again. Dessert.... OMG.... The flourless Chocolate Lava Cake. I could eat two, so damn good !!! read more

I have been here quite a few times in Ann Arbor and it never disappoints. The wine is great, the food is great and the staff are very nice. I wish they had some other options maybe like an olive appetizer becuase I love eating olives . The bathrooms and entire restaurant are clean. It's downtown Ann Arbor, so parking can be a hassle but there a couple parking garages close by. This is a great place for a date night or to take some out of town guests. Wish I could love this place, the wine is good. I have occasionally had reasonable food here but also there's just been so many times that I had a horrible food that I would not consider edible. It's kind of sad that they're missing the mark here.MacNeil for brunch on Saturday. Undercooked waffle raw on bottom, uneven griddle heating issue. Also bacon was rubbery undercooked asked for crunchy bacon recieved the same bacon back which tastes like cardboard on the edges and gristle in the middle probably been cooked three times in a row now it's just disgusting. I do really like the ambience of this place which is why I keep coming back but when I'm not drinking wine and I come here to have food I question what am I even doing here? read more

My husband and I happened to stumble upon this place as we were finishing up at the Ann Arbor Art Fair and the patio looked so cute that we wanted to stop for maybe a quick bite to eat and a glass of wine. Upon seeing the full menu however, we were intrigued and stayed for a whole dinner! We both did wine flights, I got the white wine flight, while my husband got the fruity red wine flight. Both were spectacular! They have a great selection for the wine menu while also having some really interesting cocktails that I'll have to try next time. Because yes, there will definitely be a next time here for us! Now on to the food! Michigan Baked Brie:1000/10!!! So so good!! From the fig jam, truffled honey, Marcona almonds, warm crusty bread and the perfectly gooey baked Brie, this dish was a winner!! It'll be a tough choice next time we're here whether we want to try something new, or order this again because it was that good. Lamb Chops: 9/10, the lamb was cooked perfectly and balsamic reduction and roasted carrots were amazing! It was with this dish however that I finally decided I dislike lentils, period lol. They are essentially the mouthfeel of just bean skins, and are just so grainy to me with lol. Piedmontese Burger: 9/10, my husband declared this his favorite burger so far in town but it's essentially a $20 burger so your mileage may vary. To my husband though, he gobbled it down and enjoyed the steak fries which he typically doesn't like as much as skinny fries. Service was great, although our wine flights did take awhile to arrive but all was forgiven as soon as we tasted that brie haha. We didn't have room for dessert since we almost cleaned both of our plates but I'd be happy to save room for it next time! I've been coming to Vinology since undergrad but apparently I've never reviewed it. I came here yesterday with my boyfriend and some of his friends because Black Pearl had a wait. We all got wine flights, which were good and also moderately priced - about $18 each and it amounted to about 1.5-2 glasses of wine. We also tried some of the fries, which had a delicious garlic-rosemary aioli dipping sauce, and at the end we each had a cocktail. Mine, the Spring to Life cocktail, was especially tasty. We were seated in the basement area which was also really nice, there are sheer curtains between tables which allows for some privacy. Overall I'd come here again, and maybe for dinner, because the food menu looked good too. I went to Vinology with a friend during Ann Arbor's restaurant week, but the entire experience was pretty lackluster. The Chef's Highlight Menu was $35 per person. I ordered: shrimp chimichurri with roasted tomato, braised short rib and oxtail over pasta and ragu, and berry bread pudding. I was pretty surprised to see that the appetizer consisted of two small shrimps and veggies, but they were still pretty good. The entree was reasonably portioned, but it had little meat and the consistency of the ragu was looser than I expected. The bread pudding dessert (not pictured) ended up being two pieces of dense, fried french toast with a few berries on the plate. I would not order any of these dishes again. Although my friend and I arrived before 5pm and left by 6pm, we still experienced somewhat slow service. The pacing between courses was leisurely, so we spent quite a bit of time waiting for the next course. We were able to people-watch while we waited since we were seated near the windows at the front of the restaurant, but the slow service was still disappointing considering there were very few patrons. My water glass also remained empty for long periods of time, and I had difficulty flagging down servers for refills or extra utensils. Because of the below average service, I wasn't expecting a mandatory 20% gratuity added to the bill, so that lack of transparency around gratuity expectations left a negative impression on the visit as a whole. read more

Vinology does not disappoint. After countless meals over many years, I continue to savor my visits here. The cooking has become more refined as the menu evolves season after season. I was excited to be back in downtown Ann Arbor, after a year of mostly take-out. Like many of the restaurants in the downtown core, there was substantial outdoor seating. Some of the streets were closed down to accommodate an expanded outdoor eating area, creating a festive, party-like atmosphere. I hope this continues even as the number of COVID cases drop. I liked that the menu featured several seafood dishes (scallops, salmon, sea bass and halibut), beef, and of course, duck. Have you noticed that most restaurants only offer salmon? Or maybe Ahi tuna? Not here. I was able to relish in the bronzino Milanese, Oscar style. The skin on the bronzino crisped nicely while the fish was flaky and delicious. I enjoyed the crab meat and asparagus topping but chose to spend my carb allowance on fries and dessert, rather than the saffron-infused rice. I know my priorities. The fries were near perfect. I loved the crispiness and creaminess of every bite. The sauce was nifty, as well. As for dessert, the roasted apples sounded fantastic, as did the lemon meringue pie, and the tres leches cake. After a half-second of debate, I selected the latter, because tres leches cake. Made with almond flour, the cake had a corn cake texture and was quite good with the thin layers of cream. Service was professional. The server practiced social distancing, when possible, and I appreciated this extra pre-caution. read more

LOVE Vinology! Definitely on the pricier side of things, so I have to say from my student days on campus all the way to my present-day adult days, I have only and will probably still continue to only dine here during Ann Arbor Restaurant Week haha. I can't explain why now, even though I know I could afford to come here not during restaurant week, I still insist on only dining here during restaurant week, but I do and here we are lol. I love the food here, enough to warrant me coming here more often, but to be fair, their restaurant week deal is great, so I have gotten into the habit of "treating" myself to Vinology only during the 2x a year Ann Arbor rolls out their restaurant week. This past weekend as well, ironically during restaurant week (!!), my friend had a little pre-wedding get together in the Vinology "Bubble Room" I believe it's called - the event space located downstairs in half of the basement. It has these cute glass spheres of light dangling from the ceiling all through the space, giving the effect of bubbles! We had delicious Vinology hors d'oeuvre and the bartenders were so friendly and when I requested a mocktail to be made, they made a delicious one with ginger beer and pineapple juice with muddled strawberries and blueberries. All the food was so delicious too - especially the lamb lollipops. Vinology is just so consisted and on point, always. Pricey, yes, but 10/10 worth it ALWAYS! If you can get a reservation during restaurant week, DEFINITELY take advantage of it! read more

I had a really spectacular experience eating here last night. It might just be my new favorite for date night! The menu on the website is super hard to read, so I will only be able to put down the titles of the dishes we had along with the memorable parts for me: Cheese Tart de Parma. This was a teeny tiny appetizer, and I just loved this. The combination of parmesan tart, prosciutto, and pesto was such a great diet splurge!! Ahi Tuna Carpaccio. I loved this as well. The tuna melted in your mouth, and I loved the addition of parmesan and capers to it. Oyster Mushroom. Another delicious option--the mushrooms and leeks had a yummy steak flavor about them. (Piedmontesse?) Ribeye. This came with Peruvian potato, bacon and chipotle. I thought the spice was perfect accompaniment to the ribeye, potato, and bacon. On top of all of this, we also ordered a garden salad and shared everything. While the goat cheese on the salad was outstanding, this was way too much food. Most of the tuna carpaccio had to come home because the salad wouldn't have kept and we only ate half of the salad and 2/3 of the meat dish. My only gripe with the meal was that after the Tart de Parma, all of the other dishes came out together. I would have liked some spacing between these small plates and our main dish so we wouldn't have had to eat the hot stuff before the cold. Next time I would suggest picking either the tuna or the mushroom, but not both and skipping the salad. Our server was knowledgeable in terms of the dishes and making recommendations for us, but I would have liked my water glass to be filled more frequently. I'm certain I'll be back again for dinner--the flavors were too good to let the small downsides to tarnish the experience. read more

Excellent food and ambiance! Our party of 5 came here for a special dinner on a cold Michigan evening. We were immediately greeted by friendly staff and seated in front of the Christmas tree which made it nice and festive. This is what we had: SMALL PLATES & APPETIZERS * Belgian potatoes small plate- really just french fries, but well seasoned and excellent. * Fried calamari appetizer- delicious and crispy. * Salmon avocado appetizer- different and delicious. * Baked Brie appetizer - delicious!! ENTREES * Short ribs with mushrooms and chard- hubby said was tender and delicious. * Duck breast with raspberry sauce, mashed potatoes and asparagus- excellent! * Fried chickpeas w/ falafel- meh, wish I had gotten something else! * Hamburger- very good! This review is a little overdue but we had an event here in March 2020 and this has been in my draft since then. The venue itself was beautiful but unfortunately the event planning and overall details that Vinology failed caused a lot of stress that night. We had a small engagement dinner of about 15-20 people. We had 3 major failures on this day during an event that was important to us: 1. I specifically requested chivari chairs and had an independent florist (for roughly $2800) come in to set up decor. When we walked into the venue, Vinology had the wrong chairs set up and our photographer was unable to take photos of the setup because as they were correcting the chairs guests had already arrived. That was a big bummer since I specifically emphasized the chivari chairs during my tour and decision making. Unfortunately, we did not get any good pics of the venue with the complete setup. Given the amount of money and time spent planning for a once in a lifetime day, that was extremely disappointing. 2. I picked the option to allow my guests to choose between Halibut, Chicken and Salmon. So I wanted them to have 3 options. On the day of, they had only offered Halibut and Chicken, no salmon. This was again extremely frustrating because of all the time, money and effort spent to only have these decisions not executed. They did compensate us maybe like $100 but that's truly nothing when you're paying thousands with them and thousands with the florist, not including all the other stuff. 3. The music kept stopping during the entire event. I kept reminding the staff to please turn the music back on multiple times before it was ever turned back on. This happened A LOT?? Why I don't know. I kept 2 stars because our guests really enjoyed the food. The venue itself has a lot of potential and we really wanted to book another event here but won't because of that experience. Attended one of their Black Wine events as part of a work retreat and had a great time. I'm not a wine guy. Usually I avoid it altogether, but I have to say that being educated as I consumed the wine and thoughtfully pairing it with specific food made for a very delightful experience. The owners showed off their passion for wine as they taught us about flavor profiles, how to taste wine, history, geography, etc. The food was delicious! We had a five course meal. Tried caviar for the first time and was impressed with the experience, had some delicious octopus in sun dried tomato sauce, delicious sprout salad with pickled onions and tomato, and AMAZING pork tenderloins with carrot slaw! Covid update: I came here for dinner and had a reservation for their outdoor chalets. They had a heater inside so it really wasn't that cold! It was a cozy space and a fun experience. The service was again wonderful. We got a Cesar salad to share and it was fantastic. We got the big red wine flight and it was a generous amount of wine and tasted lovely. I got the beef short ribs and ate every bite. It was fantastic. The fried chicken was crisp and cooked perfectly. The Asiago gnocchi was equally fantastic. Another great meal at vinology! read more
