Instead, there was a 24-hour delay because the hospital insisted that authorization had to come from Arleigh Burke. Finally, we worked that out--after much running around playing the go-between, the hospital, by that time, would NOT admit my father into the hospital, because they had already reached the limit on the number of patients they could accept with the special kind of tube-feeding my father required. So, my father had to wait another 24 hours. When he finally arrived in an emergency ambulance, the medical staff were unable to stabilize his condition. They tried IV to hydrate him (he had not been drinking or eating very much in the previous 48 hours) but his kidneys had already failed. He died within the next 36 hours (approximately). The communications between Arleigh Burke and the hospital failed miserably for my father. This should NOT have happened. The impression left was that the staff here believe that "he [your father's] going to die anyway, so..." They had informed us only four days before my father was hospitalized, saying that he had not been eating or drinking very much, but did not seem especially concerned. And when it was apparent that he was dehydrated and had gotten pneumonia because food particles had become trapped in his trachea, I do not believe that they acted with the urgency (and certainly NOT the DISPATCH) needed to stabilize his condition. It was very frustrating, and tragic, that my father died, because he had been doing well only five days earlier. At a cost of about $9,000 per month to have my father taken care of here, I would expected that this kind of thing NEVER could have occurred, but it DID.

If this place is what defines 5-star, it scares me to think what takes place at all the other rehab centers. I can type pages about what went wrong here, but will stick with the major disappointments. First, there's a lack of communication among staff. As someone else mentioned, it is POORLY managed. We should not have to repeat our wants and needs to every single "care giver" we come in contact with. It's 2017. Even if you're not putting in notes electronically, are you not documenting appropriately in a patient's chart? We were met with too many "I don't know"s on top of the unprofessional demeanor. Second complaint, this is a small rehab center which I personally find appealing. Except if your staff of one nurse and two support personnel cannot cater to a total of about 10 patients, then you are understaffed. Either that or your staff is choosing not to work! It is unacceptable to have an elderly patient who is unable to walk ring his call-bell because he needs to use the bathroom and not have anyone attend to him until over an hour later. That's what happened to my grandfather on more than one occasion. Surprisingly, he was able to hold himself all but one time. He was, after all, on stool softeners. One time, he waited close to 90 minutes for someone to answer his call-bell. He yelled for help, without any answer. An accident happened. He was reprimanded and shamed for causing the accident ... unbelievable! 5+ weeks my grandfather was a patient without any bathroom accident in the bed. And the time that THEY took well over an hour to answer his call, HE gets scowled at? Third complaint, PT/OT - which is why we are here in the first place, right? They are not very flexible at all. They are very 'by the book', checklist type of people. They need to check off their little boxes and anything that strays from what's written on this list drives them nuts - and they'll tell you! What happened to treating each person as an individual? In my view, you've got to treat a 90 year old similarly to how you'd treat a 2 year old - especially one who is starting to feel depressed and who has been handicapped and away from home for a month. If he wants to do his exercises in bed one day, so be it! Finally, out of the 12 or more "caregivers" we dealt with during the 5+ week stay, there is only ONE that we felt really cared about the patients and showed them kindness - and that's Maria. The rest would literally give eye rolls, barely, if ever, smile or greet, their body language showed that they were being bothered with whatever task was at hand, etc. Unbelievable. Do the elderly not have feelings? There were several other issues (missed the post-op app't because a wheelchair accessible taxi was never called, not allowing a shower one evening because he missed his schedule shower time while napping earlier, being on too many opioids unnecessarily - medications in general seemed to fit more of a 'one size fits all' belief - they told us "everyone here takes these meds") - but the bottom line is this: if God forbid I or any of my loved ones are ever in a situation where we are facing the possibility of staying at a rehab center I know it will not be this one. I strongly believe my grandfather could have had much faster and better progress with at-home PT/OT/nursing care. It's a pretty complex and appears fairly new, I'll give them that. Has so much potential - but needs a total makeover in staff with thorough training.

The ratio of staff to residents is very low, three residents per caregiver. The eight-resident home is huge, immaculate, and filled with great amenities to help the residents enjoy life. I was there around lunch time. The food their chef prepared smelled very appetizing to me. The residents were comfortable and happy. I am clear this is a great option for seniors. Both of my parents were assisted care residents for the last chapter of their lives. Despite the reluctance to leave their home, each enjoyed better health and were happier than being in their home. Had they been at VIE Village, I am sure the benefits would have been even greater.

I was very touched by their kindness at times. An organization is only as strong as its weakest link, however, and given our experience with the director of medical care there, I cannot recommend Sunrise. The lack of compassion and even professionalism made the final weeks of my father's life and the experience of his death much harder for him and the family than it needed to be. At the time of our greatest distress, the medical director responded to our needs and concerns with callous indifference. When choosing Sunrise for dad, I was focused on daily living questions but it turns out, the medical director is by far the most important position there. I regret I didn't realize that when we were looking for a place for dad. At the toughest time in your life, you'll want people who will help you not make it harder.

I was so impressed by the kindness and quality of the staff, despite the low salaries. There is an angelic woman named Pierrette Kayombo, the activities coordinator in memory care. Any day I wanted to talk to my dad, I could just text her and she would arrange for me to talk to him on her ipad (he couldn't follow calls anymore). That was invaluable for me. She was always so warm and good-spirited--she just put all the residents in a good mood. I remember she was working on Christmas--not able to be with her own family--and was so positive--just a model of the Christmas spirit and put on a concert and other activities. There will always be frustrations with institutions, but I think this is a really good place.

A home health care agency did the same. Office Experience: Mixed and some pleasant people if you can find them, but managment is disorganized, without a plan, inconsistent in oversight. The front desk staff is excellent. The PT we had was quite good. Management lacks transparency in communicating to patients what our federal government requires. The state and feds all know this; read reports on the facility's past performance and current status. Facility is substandard. Look up measures for what your patient requires for safety, and compare to Medicare and industry recommendations by the best medical professionals. If you feel unequipped to do this yourself, bring a neighbor who's a medical professional with you. HINT: Most Americans are desperate for care, haven't a clue what to look for or scrutinize, and take the BS bait. DO NOT. Your loved one only has one life. NOTE: In April 2026, this facility is currently under review for accreditation by the State of Virginia and, as our home health care company advised me but I did not othewise know, Medicare. NOTE #2: America is desperate for places to "put" people, but the longstanding nationwide perception about nursing homes/rehab centers persists. Do an online search of "documentaries about nursing homes" and see what turns up. Enough said. If you are lucky enough to get their loved one into Cherry dale, consider yourself charmed. I read…read morethe reviews for Cherrydale so I interviewed patients outside in the courtyard. What they told me is "Cherrydale is quirky but your loved one will get better" and this "place is better than a facility in Fairfax because there are single rooms as opposed to being three in a room". Based on this, I wholeheartedly pursued getting my father into Cherrydale. The rooms are nice, like a Marriott Hotel and the fitness and rehab center and rehab staff are excellent. Due to the COVID era, Cherrydale was short staffed so every now and then I asked the nurses for fresh sheets and changed my father's bed or helped him clean-up but my father was improving dramatically every day with the physical fitness. He came in a wheel chair, he left being able to walk without a walker. They have an excellent team so to have the most success 1) track your patient and communicate needs or questions with your social worker assigned to their case, 2) talk to the team that helps with discharge. Do not wait to get instructions for medicine and home care to the day before. With supply shortages, you need to prepare for discharge a week in advance. Ask the nurses to train you on anything --they offer family training but you have to ask in advance and you have to participate. Cherrydale gave my father a second chapter at 82. Three out of four doctors told me to take my father who was bed bound home to die after a serious case of pnuemonia where he became bed ridden. Four months later, my father is able walk almost 10,000 steps a day, entertain friends, and do house projects. Every time I see him, I am shocked at his recovery and I know it would not be possible without the program at Cherrydale. I am overjoyed and grateful. No one should take this place for granted and put your expectations into check. Your patient will get out of it what they put into it. Several patients told me my father would have to be encouraged to do his PT every day so for several weeks, I went to Cherrydale at lunch time to make sure he was getting his PT done. This advice was very smart. He resisted it many times but in the end I know he would not be walking 10k steps a day without this place.

TRAVELING THERAPISTS, EYES HERE!!!…read more As a traveling therapist, I would strongly advise other therapists to think carefully before accepting an assignment at Cherrydale Health & Rehabilitation Center in Arlington, VA. My experience at this facility was one of the most disappointing and exhausting assignments I have ever taken. The management style, particularly from the DOR and ADOR, felt extremely micromanaging. Rather than feeling supported as a clinician, I constantly felt scrutinized and monitored. What was most discouraging was the lack of recognition and appreciation for therapists' hard work. No matter how much effort therapists put into patient care, evaluations, documentation, and maintaining productivity, those efforts often went unnoticed. Instead, management seemed to wait for mistakes to happen and then magnify them. Small errors were heavily emphasized, while dedication, hard work, and positive contributions were rarely acknowledged. The focus often felt more centered on what therapists did wrong rather than everything they did right. One of the biggest issues was the caseload. It was not uncommon to have 15-18 patients scheduled in a day, with some days reaching 19 patients. Evaluations were frequently added on top of full treatment schedules, making it extremely difficult to provide quality care, complete documentation, coordinate with nursing and families, and stay within an eight-hour workday. The expectations often felt unrealistic and unsustainable. What made the situation even more frustrating was the lack of concern for therapist well-being. Burnout was obvious, yet management appeared to be more focused on productivity numbers and billable minutes than on whether therapists were physically and mentally exhausted. The message many therapists received was that the minutes mattered more than the people providing the care. The environment created a culture where many therapists felt undervalued and overworked. During my time there, I witnessed multiple therapists and employees become frustrated, discouraged, and burned out. Several employees resigned effective immediately rather than giving traditional notice. While everyone has their own reasons for leaving, concerns regarding workload, micromanagement, stress, and burnout were common themes. A large percentage of the therapy department consisted of travelers, which raises legitimate questions about staff retention, workplace culture, and employee satisfaction. When a facility struggles to retain permanent staff and relies heavily on travelers, it often reflects deeper organizational issues. My contract recently ended, and I can honestly say this was one of the most exhausting assignments I have experienced. What is most telling is that my concerns were not unique. Many of the traveling therapists I worked alongside shared the same frustrations regarding management, micromanagement, workload, lack of appreciation, and the overall culture of the department. For therapists considering an assignment here, I strongly encourage speaking with current and former employees before accepting a position. Patient care should always come first, but therapists also deserve to work in an environment where their hard work is recognized, their efforts are appreciated, and they are treated as healthcare professionals rather than productivity machines.

Weekends are ghost-towns here, staff-wise: literally, they seem to think that residents do not "live" on the weekends, because there are skeleton staff only, no resident activities, and little oversight - EVEN THOUGH you pay exactly the same for weekends as you do during the week. And the food: forget it. Not good, period. It was recently renovated, so looks great; but it is expensive and not supportive.

The corporate office has sent our family two invoices to date, including late fees incurred after her death. This is acceptable to Sunrise's Falls Church management team - not to us. Previous Director left the facility due to poor resident care resulting from corporate regulations and cost-saving measures.
