They are 2 days late. Dutch Meadows refuses to refund me or send another package. I don't feel comfortable eating them since they could have gone bad. This is UNACCEPTABLE! Forcing a customer to eat eggs that have gone bad and risk getting food poisoning is BEYOND incomprehensible. In addition, they threatened to lock my account bc Janice says I was cussing at her. That is a lie. Stay away from this "FARM".

Nina is responsible for bringing farmers' markets to London, England and at one time was in charge of the Union Square Greenmarket. Her book is a great read and will teach you the importance of eating natural, local and sustainable foods. She is a big supporter of meats and cheeses as well as fruits and vegetables and suggests "eating around the edges of the supermarket" and staying away from processed foods. These are young, new markets and at the moment they're small. The one at Petrosino Square has perhaps a few more vendors than the South Village market, but everything will change come September when people have returned from vacation and all that harvest produce starts rolling in. The market is in session from 10am - 2pm every Saturday until December 23rd. And these are not farmers' markets in the true sense. They are "real food" markets and feature food from not just farmers, but also "food artisans", or people who make things like pickles, zucchini bread, yogourt, etc. Last Saturday I picked up a delicious round of cheese bread and bag of pea shoots courtesy of Thanksgiving Farms, some unbelievable bacon from Cayuga Farms and a slice of delectably moist zucchini bread from Brooklyn's very own Angie's Exotic Bakery. Stone Ridge Orchards from the Catskills was in the process of unpacking big baskets of ripe produce and there was even a pickle stand going on with lots of free samples. Shopping at one of the Real Food markets is a great way to get to know local farmers and purveyors of down home, natural, sustainably raised food. It's healthy, it's tasty and it's fun!

After all, as we all know, there are precious few options for fresh fruits and veggies in the area. :( Red Jacket is up here, which sells a great variety of apples. There's a dairy stand, and I've picked up a pound of fresh ricotta for $5. They also sell a lemon yogurt that has several of my co-workers addicted; I'm afraid to try it. The bread stand plays fun music and sells a wonderful, redolent selection - baguettes, kale asiago breads, tomato onion breads, rustic breads, and so on. You can still pick up potted herbs, and there is a fantastic variety of seasonal vegetables. Currently, the winter squash look pretty awesome. I'm a bit biased because I work with CHALK, but do come check out the CHALK stand! I'm not even selling you anything - just telling you about healthy nutritional habits and giving you opportunities to win greenbucks (money to spend at the Greenmarket on fruits & veggies). :) I also heartily recommend the Greenmarket manager's stand - Kathleen is super sweet, and she makes delicious food for the demos every single week. We had butternut squash pizza yesterday. Some of her past gems include watermelon mint cucumber smoothie, charred pepper salad, and green tomatillo salsa. She has easy and nutritious recipes and a simple, fun lesson every week. Honey, kale, peppers - you name it, she's probably done a highlight of it at some point in time. The Greenmarket runs every Tuesday from 8am-4:30pm until late November. Credit/debit cards are charged an additional $2 to help offset the costs of free fruits & vegetables for EBT holders. (Oooh - if you have EBT, you get $2 in greenbucks for every $5 you spend). So if you don't have EBT, you can either bring cash or donate $2 to EBT when paying via credit/debit.
