Solid chain Mexican American "fast" food restaurant smack right in the center of Hotel zone north. Big, AC, clean, trained services, booth and tables setting. Serving many kind of comfort sopas, ensaladas and enchiladas suizas and de mole. Milanesas and New York steak, sandwiches and burgers. Dedicated parking spaces for VIP. Services are slow if busy because of short staff. My wife appreciated the AC clean and quiet environment after a week of exploring the sweating hot local tacos establishment. This is a solid 3. A very casual, not special, but not terrible, decent, good service, standard food kind of place. It's like a Mexican Perkins, which was what we were looking for that morning. We ordered a Colonial and Enfrijoladas... the plates are a little small, but were filling enough for the flight back home. I remember from my youth, in Washington state, a VIPs chain, but I don't know if the Cancun VIPs is related to the old-time chain. We came here hoping for a basic straightforward breakfast. Did VIPs deliver? Not so much. Perhaps a mostly empty restaurant during high season should have been the first clue as to how our experience would turn out. Yet, a few things did positively stand out. The restaurant is clean and brightly lit, and the orange juice (excellent flavor!) and nopal (cactus) were well-prepared. Unfortunately the hair-netted employees were a bit sullen, impatient and perfunctory in their duties. JP ordered chilaquiles and I ordered a fried egg with cactus. I tried to order hash browns and toast. What JP received was a messy mush of green and red salsa splattered over shredded chicken, unmelted cheese and tortilla chips. True chilaquiles are prepared in a skillet with eggs. My nopal and egg were good. However, the bacon wasn't good, tasting like it came from a can. I wanted hash browns, so I mistakenly ordered "papas fritas", which are French fries. That would have been OK, but the fries had been prepared in old rancid oil. FYI, I later found out the term for hash browns in Spanish is "hash browns". LOL My pan tostada turned out to be a basket of rolls sans butter or jam (even though I saw the people eating toast at a table across from us). I went to pay our bill and the cashier became visibly angry when I handed her a 500 peso note to pay a 350 peso tab. She proceeded to ignore me and, muttering under her breath, gave JP the change with a whole handful of 10 peso coins. Yikes. read more

Imagine Denny's. Now imagine that everyone speaks only Spanish, no one smiles, the food is almost unidentifiable, and your server dissappears for so long that you're almost sure you're being pranked. Then throw in subpar lukewarm food and BAM! That's Vips. This place survives because its right next to the discos and its still open when the clubs close but do yourself a favor and just don't. Sure, its cheap but this is quite literally an instance of getting what you pay for. If your friends or family suggest it then just shout NOOOOO! And if they go anyway, skip it and just have a bagel at the hotel. Because when they make it back and they're all running for the toilet, you'll be glad you chose that hotel bagel instead. This restaurant is comparable to Denny's. It was close to our hotel (Aloft), within walking distance. The prices are great, service was great, and food was great. We each had chilaquiles, she had it with fried eggs and verde sauce and I had it with chicken and red sauce. Also had traditional pancakes. All was very tasty and can't beat the prices. We had coffee and it came with orange juice, total price was $22 and some change. read more

If you want breakfast but don't want to be taken advantage of by the usury prices of breakfast at your hotel, this is a decent option. They serve breakfast until 1PM. Be warned that the sweet breads they bring out will be charged by the piece if you consume. They don't tell you that usually. $13.50 pesos (just under a USD) but they're actually pretty good. Also, my wife's combination plate (two eggs, bacon, ham, and pancakes) was pretty sad on the meat end. The ham was literally a long rectangle slice of deli ham you buy at the grocery store popular with trailer-folk, rolled up with no treatment whatsoever. The bacon was the that thin waxy bacon just a notch above $1 "bacon burger" bacon you get from fast food chains in the U.S. Still, if you've had a late morning and don't want to pay $20 bucks for a couple of eggs, it might be worth the jaunt to VIPS. It's like a Denny's but a little pricier I guess. Maybe I should have just said that. Most dishes are Mexicanized, but as mentioned above, the combination plate is fairly standard US fare. read more

Came here for breakfast, it was okay. I had the Mexican scramble and it didn't come with tortillas I was so sad! In San Diego all the Mexican plates come with tortillas.
