I absolutely looooove coming to Virginia City. So many different adventures that could be had. We had coffee, did a tour and bought some souvenirs. I will be back for that Mark Twain Tour.... Been waiting years for that building to open up.

Virginia City is a great visit with the long-stretch of old-timey stores, museums, saloons, bars, hotels/motels, etc. We had a fantastic time perusing through stores and admiring the architecture of the buildings and some of the saloons have incredible-looking bars! Make sure to check out the Virginia City Visitor Center. They offer a map of the attractions along with a discount if you purchase for 3 or more attractions. They sell a very tasty gin called Cemetary Gin and they offer free tastings! Also, check out the VisitVirginiaCityNv.com for events. Rocky Oyster Mountain Festival and International Camel and Ostrich Races are just two events held in Virginia City.

Sidewalk (if you can call them that)

It's an interesting place, no question. A giant tourist trap? Of course it is, that's all it is. There's some history squeezed in there, but it's mostly shopping-and walking, all uphill. It's a one time destination. You'll be glad you did it, and you'll be glad you left.

    4/2/2025: Comstock Mine.

4/2/2025: St. Paul's Episcopal Church, Virginia City, Nevada 89440 address location is 87 F Street and Taylor Street, the historically iconic, Carpenter Gothic-Style, Episcopal Church was founded September 1, 1861. St. Paul's Episcopal Parish is the Mother Church of all Episcopal Churches located in Nevada. In 1859, Virginia City was a boomtown which sprang up with the discovery of the Comstock Lode: The first major silver deposit discovered in the United States. Once gold, silver or mineral ore deposits were found, people continuously flocked to Virginia City where surrounding towns sprouted quickly. Pertaining to Virginia City, the new settlement formed almost overnight: People inundated Virginia City in droves in order, working one of several major mining operations such as the Comstock, Ophir, the Consolidated Virginia, and the California. Virginia City reached its peak in the mid-1870s; its maximum population peaked at about 25,000 residents. On the morning of October 26, 1875 at 5:15 AM, a single coal oil lamp caused the biggest fire in the town's history. Sadly, St. Paul's Episcopal Church burnt down including, St. Mary's-In-The-Mountains Catholic Church, the Storey County Courthouse, Piper's Opera House, the International Hotel, city offices, and most of Virginia City's business district. The nearby mines' offices and hoist works were also destroyed plus, there were several Great Fire of 1875's fire-related deaths. Backstory: The Great Fire of 1875 started on "A" Street, halfway between Taylor and Union Streets was home to a rowdy bunch of men and women who resided at a Virginia City Boarding House when a coal oil lamp was accidentally knocked over. The suspects who started the Great Fire of 1875 was probably the rough, rowdy, DRUNK Boarders. The Boarding House's residents were known to be carousing until, about 2:00 AM--the morning of October 26, 1875. The Boarding House belonged to a woman known as "Crazy Kate," Shea who was notoriously known for boarding roughhousing, undesirable infidels. So many of Virginia City's Residents wished for the Boarding House's permanent closure; however, closing Kate Shea's Boarding House never came to fruition. Only a few hours after the carousing had finally ceased and precisely at dawn, a small fire broke out in Kate Shea's Boarding House downstairs' hallway! Under normal circumstances, the fire should have been easily eradicated by the Virginia City Fire Department. However, the morning of October 26, 1875, nature intervened: The westerly wind, known as the "Washoe Zephyr," began to violently fan and push the flames further into town. Within minutes, the fire engulfed the exceedingly dry timber, quickly burning the entire Boarding House: The fire quickly consumed all buildings within Kate Shea Boarding House's proximity! Reiterating, a strong, westerly wind was fiercely blowing--fanned the small fire into a roaring blaze causing a powerful, violent concussion rattling pottery and windows exploding at a nearby town approximately five miles away! The flames fiercely inundated all building structures' dry timber, the roaring fire quickly overtaking city block after city block until, the wind blew fierce flames to so many more neighboring homes. Behind the Shea Boarding House, was a livery stable filled with horses who were in dire peril! Soon, several more buildings were burning, the fierce wind directly contributed the ferociously ravenous flames traveling quickly, and within a short time span, the fire was completely out of control, spreading to the North, West, and South simultaneously. The fire raged for hours, burning through Virginia City's business district as well as decimating many more homes. When the flames finally died out, the burned areas were Taylor Street to the South, Carson Street to the North, Stewart Street to the West, and the Chinese Quarter to the East, i.e., encompassing 75% of the city! As a result of such rampant fire devastation, the Great Fire of 1875 decimated more than thirty-three city blocks! Repeating, as a result of the devastating Great Fire of 1875, a new Episcopal Church was built in 1876 replacing the original building structure. In 1961, St. Paul's Episcopal Church was declared a National Historic Landmark. In 1966, St. Paul's Episcopal Church was added to the National Register of Historic Places. https://stpaultheprospector.org/ In addition, St. Mary In The Mountain Catholic Church's location is 111 S E St. Virginia City, NV 89440 which is next door to St. Paul's Episcopal Church, had been decimated by the Great Fire of 1875, too: The Catholic Church had to be rebuilt as well. Incidentally, Virginia City is a Census-Designated Place: Virginia City has a 2025 population of 916 whereas before the Great Fire of 1875, the population WAS 25,000 Residents. Virginia City is also the county seat for Storey County.

New Year's Day in VC! [Virginia City NV] While not all the businesses were open on New Year's Day in Virginia City I still had a fun time shopping with Mom. All the shops were open and a few food places too and that's all we needed to entertain ourselves for 2-1/2 hours. We arrived a little before 1:00p... parking on C Street was full but we managed to snag an open spot. REMINISCING... Been to Virginia Street many times in the past... even participated in a UYSB (Unofficial Yelp Spring Break) and managed to create an event on May 18, 2018 "Red Dog Bites and Ghost Tour @ Virginia City NV" My group dined at the Red Dog Saloon and we later joined a ghost tour led by Bats in the Belfry and explored history, also learned of paranormal stories about Virginia City. -sigh- memories... so much fun. We booked a room at the Silver Queen Hotel that evening. Something creepy about that hotel... SHOPPING... This past holiday Mom and I took our time and visited all the shops. Shopping in Virginia City feels like you are stepping back in time with the antique stores, mercantile, and specialty shops... in any one of these stores you may find unique trinkets and vintage treasures. We took a stroll down the wooden sidewalks and we found some fun things... you may also find a perfect place to pick up something special to gift or to remember your visit. It's always fun visiting Virginia City... since we make it one of our stops when we're in town we've done all the tourist stuff already including riding a steam engine, watched a "gunfight" at the VC Outlaw theatre, took a few haunted ghost tours (one at the Washoe Club where the Ghost Adventures did a lockdown), see the Suicide Table at the Delta Saloon and see a dress made of silver coins at the Silver Queen Hotel. What a fantastic place to visit with kids. They loved the old town vibe and wood boards running up and down. The stores were amazing so was the foot and vibe. Had a great time. Highly recommend to families with kids.

I've lived in Nevada for about 38 years now and have visited Virginia City a handful of times during different stages of my life; it's still is a cool place to visit after all these years. Is it just me or the Virginia City residents super-friendly? Every one we encountered were so hospitable and courteous. We took the Virginia & Truckee train from Carson to Virginia, and back, saw wild horses, rode past a silver mine, a pumpkin patch and through a couple of tunnels, ate lunch at Lost Seoul Saloon, got drinks at Hi Me Cafe, bought sweets from Champagne & Chocolates, got souvenirs from Buzzard Creek-Movie Poster Shop and at the Virginia & Truckee Passenger Depot, picked up a couple of bags of kettle corn from the Virginia City Kettle Corn Depot, shot targets at Shoaf's Shooting Gallery, walk among historic buildings like Virginia City's Historic Fire House, a building that was the location of the Bank of California, Saint Mary's in the Mountains Church and the First Presbyterian Church and ironically enough, witnessing a Zombie Crawl event that very weekend, not to mention just taking in the scenery and the sites as we hiked up and down Virginia City's steep, winding streets (which at my advanced age made me sore for 3 whole days!) but it was all well worth it because we had fun, made memories and had a great, unique experience. The only downside to our entire visit (aside from being sore) was my cell didn't get wi-fi service at all but other than that we had a blast.

Our bus tour had three hours in Virginia City (VC). When we were dropped off, I walked to the Ward 4 School and toured the building. Then I made it back to the center of town and I went to St. Mary's Church only to find that it was closed. It closes between 1 and 1:30 for lunch so plan accordingly. After the visit to the church, I made it back up the hill and walked the main street. I found a lot of shops selling things I don't need or want. I then took the tour from the center of town. It's a 20 minute tour and the driver knows much of the history of VC so you get to know more about this historical place. In between the church and my tour, I stopped at the Bucket of Blood and had a Coke. The walking had finally gotten to me. VC is the kind of town that you'll like if you're into history or if you like shopping. I am an abandoned mine person, so the stories I heard and the dumps I saw were of great interest to me. I'm glad I had the chance to visit here after seeing many of the famous buildings on the PBS show Outdoor Nevada with John Burke.

Amazing place. Felt like we stepped into another era. Such a wonderful experience for us visiting this place.

Here is the smaller sign near the entrance of The Washoe Club

Wow where do I begin. This place is a hidden gem near Lake Tahoe I loved visiting Virginia City. I visited one time during August last year and another time on Halloween. Everyone is so nice and welcoming here. I went to the Palace Saloon restaurant and that was very good. The history of this town is super cool along with the paranormal side of it. I went to the Washoe club, Mackay Mansion and explored everywhere. I recommend both paranormal tours they were both awesome!! Also if you are a coffee or cool drink lover go to Larry's Gourmet coffee house that was very good. Definitely recommend going and checking this cool town out.

It's definitely an engineering beauty and was the final step before I-580 from Reno to Carson City was completed, opening in 2012. You used to have to take S. Virginia St./Carson-Reno Highway south from Reno until you came upon the entrance to I-580 at Bowers Mansion Rd. Having this bridge makes commuting so much easier and there is only one state remaining now that does not feature a freeway from the capital to a major airport (South Dakota). Congratulations Nevada--you've joined the big leagues! I-580 spans this bridge with three traffic lanes in each direction. It can be pretty scary traversing it when it is windy, rainy, and/or icy/snowy. You need to slow down, especially if you drive a higher-profile vehicle like a bus, RV, trailer, big rig, or even SUV or minivan. In fact, just slow down when conditions warrant it no matter what size vehicle you drive. My one complaint about this bridge is there are no warning sign like other states have that bridges ice before roadways, and people speed through it during bad weather like a bat out of hell. This is why I am subtracting a star from this review. This past winter (2022-23) there were numerous accidents and multi-vehicle pileups on this bridge or very close to it which caused the freeway to be closed for hours. It seemed every week there was an accident and closure sometimes. Please slow down! The winds blow on top and bottom of a bridge, which makes it colder, and thus prone to freezing earlier than the rest of the freeway. If it's really bad weather, I might even take Carson-Reno Highway as an alternative to avoid this bridge for the above reason. It adds five minutes of so to your commute, but it can be safer, with less traffic. Of course, if the roads are very snowy, it is better to take the freeway though, since NVDOT plows Carson-Reno Highway less frequently, and it does not get priority over the freeway. You have to use your judgment. But otherwise, it's a fun bridge. You can see it heading south on 580 about a mile or two before it, so you get a good perspective on how it looks. You also view it from Connie Way in New Washoe City. In fact, I might head there in the next few days to take some pictures to post here!
