This roadside market is heavily focused on apples, which are the local crop du jour. Even out of season, bottled cider is amply available. They have some dispensers out for free samples. I bought a blackberry cider. On other counts, they have a limited selection of produce and dairy items. I was surprised to find the butter not local, but it was certainly of quality. They had a fairly straightforward process to buy things and take cards and swipe to pay. I did not find everything I could have asked for and there are probably other places in the bucolic surroundings to get fresh produce. But I could see it as being worth a stop. read more

To say I love all things peach related is a understatement. Is it because I grew up part of my life in Georgia? Or that the song "Peaches" (not the Justin Bieber one) was a candidate for my high school graduation? I can't say for sure, but when I see it on a menu it catches my attention almost as quickly as "duck." That said, time (and having a wife from Virgina) has led to an increased appreciation for apples. I've always enjoyed apple pies and apple fritters, but little did I know that there is this magic elixir known as apple butter. What is that you ask? Just know that you can apply it to everything you would apply butter, but so much more! And so my exhalation upon seeing this Market, quaintly sitting beside a highway as if not to draw attention. Is it the biggest apple market in the state? I don't know, and I don't care. It is my apple headquarters thus forward. Every common variety of apple you can think of and a few you didn't know about (like the cameo). And yes, apple in every form. Pies, jams, preserves, breads, frozen, wine, cider, and so much more. Do they have non-apple related products? Sure; chips, cured ham, pastries, etc. But who cares?! You didn't come to a market in Virginia (in the city that is the home of Whitehouse applesauce of all places) to seek out a pecan log. You came for apples. And here you shall find them. The open air concept is fitting (which also means it is dog friendly) and the view of mountains across the way are majestic. Some of the friendliest people you'll ever meet too. If you live near here, I'm jealous. If you are ever in the area, be sure to empty your trunk and put ice in a cooler. I promise you'll need the storage space. read more

I don't usually write reviews, but something about this place felt off. While I was in the store, I saw something that really made me question how they run things. I'm not sure exactly what was going on, but it looked like an employee was being treated unfairly and for no clear reason. It just gave off really sketchy vibes. Virginia Farm Market is located along U.S. Route 522 (North Frederick Pike) in Winchester, Virginia. I don't live in the area but have driven by this open-air market in the big red barn many times over the years. A few days ago, I was traveling through the area and really had a taste for some fresh peaches. I pulled into the large parking lot which appeared well maintained and free of debris. Upon entering the market I was impressed with the variety of products available. Everything is organized well and product displays are attractive. Prices are clearly marked and the market is very clean. On display is a good variety of fresh seasonal local produce. There are different varieties of apples, peaches, plums, pears, melons, sweet corn, peppers, cabbage, green beans, squash, cucumbers and more. In addition to produce they also have amazing selection of fresh baked pies and an extensive selection of apple cider with free samples available. They have doughnuts and ice cream by the scoop and so much more. You can even buy bacon, ham, cheese, eggs, my favorite Troyer's Trail Bologna and so much more. The staff and employees are very friendly and helpful. They seem to enjoy their jobs. On this occasion, I only purchased some peaches, plums and sweet corn. They were all very fresh really delicious. I will not hesitate to stop the next time I drive through the area, I look forward to trying more of their great products. read more

We stumbled upon this during our trip from Pittsburgh to OBX and I was so happy we stopped. What we imagined would be a 5 minute stop ended up being 60 minutes. Everything about this place was so awesome. Everyone that worked there was so nice and friendly. We loved all the free samples of products and the apple cider slushees were a perfect fall treat. My son had the best time on the "Choo Choo" train and running through the pumpkins. I would HIGHLY recommend stopping here. read more

Although the owners are very nice and the layout of the store is very nice the staff is horrible and their prices are high compared to other places. Honestly, i will pay high prices just as long as the customer service was good but not in this case. My twins and I were there to pick up aome pumpkins and i wound up spending 73.00 for almost nothing. The staff of three girls all have attitudes and looked miserable working there. We waiting 10 minutes waiting for someone to acknowledge us and the girls kept walking by and ignoring us. We waited exactly where we were supposed to so we can get called up and this family went in front of us so when the one nasty brunette came up to the register she tried to take them first and i said well, we were here first and waiting. After that, i got nothing but an attitude, dirty looks and not even a thank you so i will never be going back there again. Not going to pay her hourly wage with my hard earned money. My friend's husband's uncle owns the place (I know, talk about a 6 degree separation) and well, she recommended that I came to check this place out. This market is absolutely divine. It is festive with so much pride and love for Virginia... and it just simply makes me happy. There is enough to be engaged with and samples to try but not too much where it'd feel overwhelming. I nearly went to Seattle's Pike Place Market every weekend when I lived in Seattle and this market reminds me of it but much more relaxed. There is an abundant amount of season fruits and vegetables to pick out. They were all fresh and not too ripe where it'd attract a lot of flies and creatures. There are samples of peach cider, apple cider, cherry cider, salsa, apples, peaches, hot sauce... there are just so many samples everywhere. They also have a bakery section and I ended up buying a slice of apple pie home. Boy, was my stomach just as happy as when I went into this place to check it out. Prices are reasonable which is a huge plus. They also have a limited selection of flowers/bouquets that are also reasonably priced. I got a bundle of 5 sunflowers (the size of my face... seriously) for just ten bucks. Their wild flower blooms were $15 and I think that was a reasonable price as well. If you are visiting the Winchester area the Virginia Farm Market should be at the top of your list of places to stop. They have the best donuts you will ever eat..... apple cider donuts. It sounds crazy but trust me, they are fantastic. They must have two dozen different varieties of apples. They also carry local honey, apple butter (great on toast), handmade soap, free range eggs, apple cider, jelly and jams. If you like pie (who doesn't), they have about a dozen different ones to choose from. I had the apple and it was delicious. Be sure to pick up a few packs of the country ham. It is vacuumed sealed, no refrigeration needed so it travels well. If you are not familiar with country ham, it's very very salty but also very very good. Fry it with some eggs and toast, and you will have a breakfast fit for a King. Friendly employees, it really is a great little farmers market. read more

I live 3 miles from the Virginia Farm Market and I just don't get what everyone sees in this place. The pies are ok, be aware that they only claim to be baked there. They do not claim the pies are made there or even made made by them. The pies are trucked in frozen and bake on premise, this from a former employee, so big deal. I can bake a frozen pie at home. It's not that they have poor quality, it's that it's so over priced. The produce may or may not be local. There are plenty of places that have equal quality at much lower prices where produce is locally grown. It's very touristy, hence the prices. The locals all have a good chuckle as we drive by and see all the cars from Northern Virginia and DC, maybe the prices are ok compared to the NOVA area. I love traveling the back roads through Winchester. It's beautiful. I will also admit that I normally don't drive through these parts without stopping here. If you're watching the waistline, you'll want to stay on the far right of the building where the fruits, jerky and veggies are. Beyond that area are so many goodies such as pies, cookies, ciders, chips, candy and ice cream indulge in. Hey, you only live once and I'd prefer to go happy if you get my drift. The folks here are more than willing to offer you a sample of anything and everything. They are all very friendly too. On our most recent visit, one of the workers was putting out peaches and she grabbed one, sliced it and offered up a sample. #delicious They are in no way cheap but I don't think they should be. As the saying goes, "You get what you pay for" and I don't mind paying if the quality is there. For me, it's here in the product and the overall experience. read more

There are a varied amount of things here and while some of it is expensive, not all of it is (ex. $1.49 for a 2lb of Vidalia onions vice $1.79 for a 1lb bag at the Food Lion two blocks away); a lot of what is, is justifiably so (homebaked pies are always better than mass-produced ones). The staff is friendly and helpful, always ready with a pairing suggestion or some recipe ideas. I found them to be helpful on other suggestions as well, which was a nice touch. One bit of warning comes from a few of the products: sadly, while most are from local farms, there are quite a number that are "produced" for the farm market from small businesses well outside the area; likewise I noticed a few clearly commercial items sold there simply because the local distributor was in the area. These really shouldn't be here. Overall, it's a nice place to go and will definitely suit your farmer's market needs. read more

We found this wonderful farm market on our way from Ohio to Newport News, VA. The frontage in late September was a river of pumpkins that we just couldn't resist stopping to take a look at. There were lots of photo ops for families with children, and lots of pictures were being taken the day we stopped (a Saturday.) My husband talked with the friendly owner about the business as I wandered and tasted several varieties of apples that were being offered by the friendly staff. Everything for outdoor fall decorating was available here. Unfortunately, the wonderful scents of fresh-baked pies that were still warm from the oven fought with the Magic Marker smell that was dispersed as the plastic covers of the pies were marked with variety-- that was my only negative reaction to this place, and made my rating a 4 and not a 5. Shop carefully, because as the other reviewers noted, things are very expensive, except for a few. We were offered a sample of fresh donuts still hot and they were delicious. The pumpkins are 59 cents a pound and they have a good selection of different types like Cinderella pumpkins. They also have some heavenly smelling soaps like primrose oil and aren't badly priced - 5 for $12. The market is close to 522 and is open until 7:30 pm through October. While Marker-Miller Orchards is another good place to visit, they are only open until 6 pm through Thanksgiving and they are a little farther off 522. read more
