I have used Va Green for about 8 to 10 years. Up to the last 2 years they have done a great job. But my grass has declined in health for past two years. I have full sprinkler system , but water was not problem. The treatment seemed to be lacking quite a bit . I am wanting to let them continue but I am having second thoughts. AMAZING results just 1 year in. Pricing is extremely competitive and our yard is already looking like i envisioned. They had to get our soil right because of the acidity levels and then, once that was done, aerated and seeded with fescue. We could not be happier. read more

Local companies charge less and are who I'd recommend--NOT Virginia Green. I spoke on the phone and paid $1486.75 on March 31, 2025. This was for lawn care services, to treat the yard during the season and to reseed the lawn in the fall. They sent me a bill at the end of the season for an additional $164, because they mis-measured the yard. I didn't agree to the $164, either verbally or in writing, but they will not remove the charge from my account. I can forward the emails to you if needed where we go back and forth. I don't understand why the concept of me not agreeing to the additional charges isn't comprehensible to them but they are quite focused on profit and understandably so given they are owned by a San Francisco-based private equity firm, Golden Gate Capital (ie THEY ARE NOT A LOCAL COMPANY). read more

They can definitely get your yard looking good, though it is pricey. However, they oversprayed and killed all my rosebushes. Four mature bushes that were in bloom. They sent out an arborist to check it out and he confirmed it was a chemical spray. However when they called back they said that when we had our house power-washed 11 months earlier it was likely them using too much bleach. That was the most ridiculous excuse I have ever heard from a company. Also, don't pay their $725 aeration fee, you can rent one or get someone else to do it for about $150 with over-sseeding. read more

Great and thoughtful work! Recently our VA Green specialist, Keith, came by to do the final seasonal spread and spread this year. I was out blowing leaves in the front, trying to finish clearing the yard before he got here. I was about half way done when he pulled up; he asked if I would like him to come back after doing some other customers, and I gratefully agreed. I kept pushing through, but hadn't finished when he came back. He pulled up, waved, and got out his blower. Together we finished the yard, maybe ten to fifteen minutes. I thanked him very much, and pointed out it wasn't his job. He demurred and smiled, and shifted to spraying. He answered my yard questions with expert advice, and thanked me for being a customer. We're Highly impressed and grateful for his work. And our yard is notably healthier, fuller, and Green! read more

If you value your lawn and want to keep it looking good, you can do nothing and spend nothing and it won't look any worse than if you had wasted thousands of dollars on Virginia Green. As one reviewer said, this is a marketing co, not a lawn care co. One of their techs admitted it was the worst lawn of those he treats and he would come up with a plan to deal with it and text it to us. That was over two weeks ago and a call to CS was useless. No plan, just a disaster of a lawn. They will push you to buy various services which is why they exist in the first place. Don't waste your money. read more

This is an... interesting company. The rep came out and assessed my lawn, he was friendly and professional enough. I was anxious to get going with the service, as time was a factor with the fungal infection in my grass. We played email tag a little bit, then finally got pricing established. I asked when they would be able to come, and he said, "The scheduling department will contact you 24 -48 hours before coming." What? You can't just schedule a specific date? My lawn is dying more every day. I need to know if I should reach out to another company, or just try to handle it myself. But, trying to be flexible, I agreed to wait to hear. Nothing for a week. Finally, I just decided to apply my own fungicide. Another week goes by, and a few days ago I get a random text from one of their workers at 8:30 AM one morning. "I'm sorry, I'm not feeling well, I won't be able to come today to service your lawn." First of all... we had nothing scheduled. No text 24-48 hours beforehand. Second of all...even if I DID want the service, since when does one sick employee prevent a company from completing a service call? Does Cox cable tell you that they can't install internet that day, because Larry has the flu? I texted back and said we had nothing scheduled, and I didn't need them anymore because I had applied product myself. THEN, two days later, two guys from Virginia Green show up to my residence unannounced, and just start spraying my yard! I ran out and told them I had already done it, had already TOLD them I did it and didn't need them, and once again, YOU DIDN'T TELL ME YOU WERE COMING! They were understanding enough and obviously didn't charge me, but what the hell? Maybe others have had a better experience, but this was mine. Use it as you will. read more

I am disappointed to read the bad reviews because that definitely has not been my experience. When we moved over to the west end, our yard was full of weeds and that "wire" grass. I used them to treat the lawn and I aerated and seeded it in September myself using their seed (125 per bag ugh but it works). We used our irrigation every other day at around 5am for 15-20 min per zone. I cut, dethatched then aerated it and finally, put the seed down. In the spring, my yard came up thick and green. I would recommend them and if i ever had a problem, they showed up and tried correcting it but it's been years since I've had an issue. Do the same every year for the best results and also give it time. read more

I called to get a quote for service. I received the estimate from Nick Roth, and the next week came home to a sign in my yard saying the yard had been serviced. I called Nick Roth and told him I didn't request service. He said he sent me a welcome email and that the recording of our phone call backs up his argument that I wanted service. The email subject line says VA Green Quote and Map. And is clearly not a welcome email as it doesn't communicate anything about starting service. And the phone recording clearly ends with me needing more information before any service was started. After receiving bills in the mail, I called and spoke with Matthew Farrell who agreed with me that I didn't request service. Matthew continued to follow up with me to start service and I never responded. Later I would receive a collections letter in the mail because Virginia Green sent me to collections for a service that I never requested. Which is wild. I continued to call Virginia Green every time I received a bill or a collection notice. Finally, I was connected to someone in the Richmond office who told me that she would look into my interaction with Matthew Farrell, but clearly wanted to rush me off the phone. I haven't heard back from her, and it has been over two weeks. I'll be sure to share this story with everyone I know looking for lawn service. This is not how you do business. read more

In February of 2025 I purchased a specific lawn care package from Virginia Green that was to provide a regimented lawn care treatment plan spread out over a 12-month period. I agreed to pay for this service in advance of receiving the treatments. Total cost was $855.95. In March 2025 the treatments began. There is nothing regimented about the way Virginia Green provides their service. Some months they come twice sometimes you don't see them for several months. In my case a treatment in July was not followed by another treatment until October. Regardless of how the treatments were preformed, in February of 2026 a representative from Virginia Green reached out to tell me, I owed money for a treatment they conducted for my "new" treatment plan. She explained, with Virgina Green once you sign up you are automatically considered "Subscription Based" and that your subscription continues until you formally cancel. I told her I did not sign up for a subscription-based plan, and I was never informed by Virgina Green about such an arrangement. I was told that Virgina Green clearly indicates this stipulation on every invoice. I have saved a copy of every invoice provided by Virginia Green and no where on any invoice is this "Subscription" situation listed. After explaining this to the representative and their review of my account it was agreed I had not been informed of this business model. I was told not to worry about the amount owed and that my account would be updated to reflect this situation. Since then, I have been bombarded with harassing calls, emails and text telling me my account is past due and that I agreed to a subscription-based service. I have responded via email, phone and text to Virginia Green to please cancel my account and nothing seems to work. Their model seems to be "act heavy handed" and the customer will capitulate. The purpose of this complaint is to inform the BBB and others of this predatory business model. read more

I originally signed up for Virginia Green to have my lawn seeded and undergo a few treatments. We had a lot of moss and Virginia Green informed me that was not a problem. Not once did they come to inspect the lawn or the moss. I signed up and after a few months, I contacted them because I wasn't seeing much difference. They assured me to give it time, the moss would disappear and the lawn would look great. However, the moss never really went away after a year of service, so I decided to cancel. At that point, they contacted me and informed me that there's nothing they can do about the moss and that I was misinformed. Wanting to earn back my business, we agreed they would come to assess the lawn and we'd go from there. They basically reiterated there's nothing they can do about the moss. I said fine, how much is it to seed the lawn again. He gave me a price, and I said okay. Six weeks later, the lawn was not as full as expected and I wanted to ask them to provide more seed. I happened to see them outside treating the lawn and I ask the guy if this treatment was part of the seeding, and he replied with no, this is part of your regular service (the service I canceled). I contacted VG to ask why I am still being serviced, when I only ordered seed. They said I never canceled. Good thing I saved the email. So they issued a refund. However, I still needed more seed, from the seeding service that they guarantee. Because I canceled, they refused to touch up the lawn and they lied by telling me someone had come the week prior to touch it up. Good thing I have photos. Long story short, they will tell you what you want to hear to get you signed up. If you purchase one, three, or five services, they will continue to charge you without asking. They price the seeding service as a-la-carte, however they don't honor the seeding guarantee unless you continue service. They don't even monitor how the seed is filling in the lawn to determine if more seed is necessary. Virginia Green has no process for training technicians properly. It's either that or technicians just don't care about work. Partially applied 6 applications for weeding and fertilizing and every time they miss large sections of my yard. This is the 3rd season at two different properties that they have done this. They over spray and kill your plants and garden due to lack of attention to detail. I lost all of my Squash and Cucumber plants due to their carelessness. I HIGHLY DISCOURAGE ANYONE FROM USING THIS OVERPRICED SERVICE FROM A BROKEN COMPANY. read more

After prepaying, they managed to do nothing but let all my grass die. I took it on myself to regrow my own lawn in the fall. Representative shows up with a machine with wheels to roll over all my new 1 week old grass and leaves mud tire trails instead of my newly sprouted grass. They finally sent a guy out who said "what does your husband want me to do here?" It's in your notes! Isn't it clear! Wife told him what I wanted. He left my house doing nothing. I've called company 3 times today and each time they message him to contact me and he will not call me. It's really not worth the headache. Do not use this company. We recently ordered aeration and overseeding services from VG which left a hole in one of the irrigation lines in our backyard. When we called, they said the line should be 12" underground, so they aren't liable. No apology, additional information, nothing. Just 'sorry, not our problem - bye!' Didn't feel very customer service oriented to me. The puncture is about 3' away from a head.. but they came the day after all those flash flood warnings at the beginning of September, when everything was muddy. They made quite an uneven mess of mud and trenches with the machine and popped a hole in an irrigation line. My guess is the machine sunk down in the mud and punctured the pipe, but who knows how it happened. I guess we're lucky if it was just the one! We are new to irrigation, and I'm fine if it's not their liability, but I'd at least like to learn how to prevent it, if they should have tried to reschedule due to rain/mud, was it normal for the seed to be so thin (I could have sent pics -- maybe it's just a not so great employee -- they also wrapped the swings around the playset and didn't put them back) -- we went back out and added more seed to several bare areas. Heck, maybe they could have offered a reference for someone to fix the pipe? It would have been nice to have some empathy and concern, as this is our first time living in a house with an irrigation system -- we don't know what we don't know! Looks like we will pay to fix it and cross our fingers it doesn't happen next time we aerate. Hopefully, the next company can provide more info on how to not break the irrigation system when aerating. IMHO, lesson learned: don't use their aeration and overseeding services! read more

I've had VA Green for 2 seasons now. Both times when they aerated, they managed to clip my irrigation system even though I flagged all the areas where they should have avoided. Couple hundred bucks out of pocket in repairs each time. Lesson learned: I'll never let VA Green aerate again. I have bare spots in my lawn despite VA Green having seeded my lawn for 2 years. I called them early this spring and asked to purchase a bag of grass seed so I could attend to the bald spots myself. They said they would fix the bare spots for me free of charge -- but they didn't do it... and I reminded them 3 times. Would have been better if they had just sold me the grass seed instead of making a promise they didn't even bother to fulfill. If they were more careful with their aeration and if they had seeded the bare spots like they promised, they would have had a 4 star review. Customer service rep was very nice on the phone. But it's results that matter, not empty promises. read more

Fraud and deceptive sales techniques. On may second of twenty twenty five I received a text and phone calls from Liam of Virginia Green letting me know about my mole infestation. He said the moles will destroy my yard and they have a program to eliminate them. A Virginia Green technician had reported the mole infestation. I said to Liam on the phone I do not have a mole problem. I have had rental properties for over 40 years and I know what to look for. I asked for him and a technician to come out to my property to show me . He sent someone named JD. He said, I do not have a mole problem, I found that my normal technician had not reported this and his supervisor double checked that he did not accidentally check the wrong box for mole infestation, I have called and emailed and even written a hand written letter to Mr. Grattan the owner. I waited 2 weeks after each to get a response on this matter. No one has contacted me. They must have knowledge of the deceptive sales techniques to pray on the elderly, single Mother's and people who have no knowledge of moles. Virginia green has chosen to ignore my many attempts to contact me, which leads me to this conclusion . I have screenshots phone records and proof of the letter I sent . Virginia green should be criminally prosecuted for deceptive sales techniques. read more

I paid upfront for a year's worth of treatments with aeration and seeding. I had to chase them for the soil testing results and recommendations. Additionally, my lawn looks the exact same it did prior to their "treatments"...horrible and more weeds than grass. They recently aerated and seeded and sent an email with a lawn prep to do list prior to the aeration and seeding. It said nothing about moss removal. I did everything on the list. They returned for the regular lawn maintenance treatment, and then recommended that I have moss in my yard removed PRIOR to aerating and seeding! I sent a follow-up email stating that my lawn was already aerated and seeded. I have not heard a reply. Save your money or choose a more reliable company. Happy to leave the Virginia Green signs on my crappy lawn, as an advertisement for them for free. read more

This year however, the crew that performed the seeding and aeration damaged the yard and then the manager "Corey" who stopped by stated they do not consider this damage and it will grow back. Virginia Green has been doing my yard about a year. During that time, they have gotten rid of all the weeds. I like that they call about a week ahead to let me know when they are coming. They tell me what they will do and also put that on my email after they complete the service. Jason and Ian have been helpful and informative as I've asked questions. Paid for my lawn to be aerated and seeded. The guy shows up and tells me he needed the sprinkler system to be flagged and this was all in an email sent out the prior week. I told them I had no idea i needed to be checking my email so did not know I needed to flag the sprinklers. He said "Thats not our fault. This is 2021 you should be checking your email." Fair enough, but is that really you something you say to a paying customer? Then he told me since there were no flags, we would have to reschedule and they wouldn't be able to come back out until early November. Again, fair enough. I probably should have checked my email. Maybe I'm crazy, but I thought this was a bit rude and irritating, and because of my less than smooth interactions with the service individual this morning, I no longer trust in the level of service that this company will provide. read more

From the 2022 season, Virginia Green promised results to a patchy and bald spot yard. Well, I paid a year in advance, and they started treating my property. throughout the year and before they even started, they gave me all these things I should be doing to help get results with me yard; which I did. Nothing happened. 0 results. Also, throughout the year, I made multiple inquiries to them as to why I wasn't getting results: basically, they just shrugged off my concerns. A whole year and no results and to add to the insult, they started the service over in 2023 without notice and charged me for their services. When I called, they said I had to cancel the service each year and if I didn't pay the fees from their 2023 services, they would send it to collections. Just a horrible company. Never using again. Virginia green is better than trying to maintain soil balance myself, but I have found more specialized places take time to really understand my soil and customize. They seem to push added products that cost more. Overall not a bad service, but I like my lawn to be great and that is not possible with them. read more

We've used Virginia Green for at least 2 years straight, but probably 3 at this point. Here are my results: The yard looks ok in early spring and 3 to 4 weeks after seed goes down. Aaaand THAT'S IT. Once the heat kicks in, which is usually from late May to early September most years, it looks like crap all over again. We have a "green" lawn approximately 4 out of 12 months every year. One would think that a company called "Virginia Green" would want something other than brown lawns for their customers. Also, take a few minutes and look at the other reviews. Oct. 2024 wasn't exactly a banner month for them. Multiple complaints about a variety of things including lawns not looking any better, parts of lawns damaged by aeration, etc. My experience has been the exact same. I'm bewildered by the fact that they want to put a sign with their company name on it that says "respect the lawn". It looks like they don't respect the lawns and having that sign on a moss-filled yard with little live and thriving grass seems about apropos. What really did it for me though was my wife just sending me a text saying that they were rude on the phone to her. I'm not convinced I can do any better than Virginia Green regarding a green lawn, but if I do it myself, at least I can't make it any worse, and I'm not paying someone only to be rude to my spouse and not deliver the product they promise. I advise everyone that's even thinking about contacting this company to run away screaming unless you already have a decent yard and you just want some 20 year old to come indiscriminately dump chemicals on it 3 times a year. Guess the tech was having a bad day and decided to only treat some of the yard. We have cameras all around our house and watched as he treated some areas an because his hose would not go to the end of our property he did not treat the entire area. Then he went to the side of our house, got his hose stuck under our car tire and tried pulling on it but it would not budge so he just decided not to treat that side of our yard. He wrapped up his hose, got in his truck, put his face in his hands While leaning on the steering wheel, took a paper towel, wiped off his face the threw it on his dashboard like he was pissed off. In the 2 years with Virginia Green I consistently had issue with their quality of service. They continually left solid product on my drive ways and sidewalks after application. During the aeration and seeding of my lawn they missed entire areas of the lawn as evidenced by the lack of seed and fertilizer in those areas. read more

I have no idea if they will ever help with my lawn or not. I am still trying to get them to keep their word about replacing the beautiful ground cover I had on the entire west side of my house. They killed all of it in their first "treatment." They killed the ground cover in my garden as well. What the heck! The admitted their mistake and expected to leave it at that. But it took 10 years and a fair amount of money to create that living beauty. The only way to get them to make it right is to be willing to take them to court. I have used VG for over 10 years and have not had any issues until recently. I have noticed more weeds than usual this spring in my back yard. I suspected that they were either not treating the backyard or not spraying as thoroughly as they should be. I got a notification yesterday that they would be servicing my yard today. They have always been really good at communicating when they would be out to service my yard - I will give them that. I was in the family room drinking coffee and checking email this morning when I heard the applicator on the truck start up. I went to the side window and saw he was treating the neighbor's yard across the street and assumed mine would be next. I came back into the family room and opened up my blinds so I could make sure he sprayed my backyard. 10-15 minutes later, he was gone. I looked out my front window and noticed he had put the sign out like he had sprayed my yard. Of course, I don't know that he sprayed my front lawn since I was in back waiting for him to come into my backyard. I can only assume he did since I don't have any issues with my front lawn. I called the office to let them know that I don't think the technician treated my backyard and she indicates that he did because she has a picture of my fence. Apparently, they take a picture of your fence as proof that they treated the area. How exactly is this proof that the area was treated? The only thing a picture would tell me is that he was here, not that he actually did what he was supposed to. And yes, I did crouch down to smell the grass in the backyard and there was no evidence of any chemicals. If he just sprayed as she claimed he did because after all, she has a picture of my fence, I am pretty sure I would have smelled the chemicals. She has the technician call me and he assures me he did spray my yard before he did my neighbor's yard - he obviously is very stealth then because sitting exactly in the same place, I didn't hear him when he was at my house, only when he was across the street. Obviously he was never going to say he didn't treat my yard so I gave up but did request that I be present next time he treats my yard. It is unfortunate I have to resort to babysitting now after all these years of service without issues. Good news though, apparently, I can just take a picture of my credit card and claim that is proof I paid them!‍ read more

The only positive thing I can say is, they left me a large bag of seed and large piece of sod to repair their damages. Never followed up, doesn't return calls, and sloppy work. They are only concerned about how many yards they finish in a day...Definitely not the quality of their customer service. I no longer wanted their service and went through a little bit of a hassle canceling future services. They conducted another service two months after sending a notice to cancel and invoiced me. After I complained, they did zero out the account and ensured me all future services have been cancelled. Overall, they did do a good job on my lawn at a good price. There were minimal weeds and it seemed to be greener. I deducted one star because of the canceling process. read more
