I had a blast. I was happy to add another drive thru Safari to my list of adventures. Purchasing tickets at the main entrance was slow, but the overall park experience was fun. I did not enjoy the cheeseburger combo meal that was purchased on site. The lemonade was bland, and the burger was dry. The women's restroom is overdue for remodeling. I was excited to see penguins, lemurs, squirrel monkeys, tigers, and a king cheetah at the park. I would not have guessed that VA would house these animals. I was also excited to see the giraffes and rhinoceroses. The park was clean, and there were plenty of wild animals to see. As a bonus, potholes were scarce. read more

This was a fun trip. I didn't want to let me kids feed the animals because every time they go to a fucking petting zoo... they get sick... violent Exorcism vomiting sick. So I opted to not feed the animals. Also the locals told me not to feed the animals. And now that I think about it, they charge you to feed their animals with their own food... but hey, I'm not hating the game... CAPITALISM! So but me not letting my kids pet or feed the animals, I save half on the experience, and then some cause I'm not letting my kids get sick. But man... these animals just swarm your car anyway... almost got mugged by an emu. If I got into a car accident in the safari, would it be a liberty mutual commercial? What a cool little safari . The 3 mile drive thru safari is home to many different types of animals from buffalo to zebra to rhinoceros and many others in between . You can also buy feed buckets for your drive thru the safari , these buckets are definitely worth it . (My next trip thru I will buy the 4 bucket combo) After you drive thru the safari you can take a stroll thru the small little zoo that is home to some native animals up to tigers and 2 small aviaries . Upon returning back to the parking lot from your two little adventures you can stop in the extensive gift shop for some keepsakes . On another note this is only the second ever safari that I have been to where every animal looks to be in amazing health and treated with the utmost care . Had great time through open safari drive through but when going through the zoo walk through area on foot seeing caged animals, I got hassles and threatened to be kicked out of park cause we had food left over from open safari drive. We didn't see sign at entrance going into walk through area but we also didn't give it to any of the animals either unless specified. My Autistic son wanted to see giraffes as every other kid was feeding and touching them with the attendant watching them. My son wanted to do the same and got told he couldn't touch them. Attendant approached me about feeding i had and told me i couldn't have in area and excepted me to hand it over to her after paying for it at a highway robbery price. I had told her I was taking it home as I paid for it, my son saw giraffes and we walked away never feeding giraffes at all. The attendant got offended that I wouldn't give up feeding it had paid for and called Security on me and made outright lies that I was irrational, i never spoke to her, she approached me, I was minding my own business with my Autistic son. Will never go back again as it is over priced entry fee and will nickel and dime you to death. $5 for a piece of lettuce and what they call a bucket is actually a soup bowl size cup.​ read more

This is an amazing family adventure. I've been a couple times now and I have enjoyed every visit. This was Memorial Day weekend so it was extra packed. My advice is visit during the week instead of a weekend especially a holiday weekend. There was so many people that the animals were not as interactive because they had eaten plenty. It was still a very fun experience. The giraffe was very interactive on this visit. It's always fun seeing the Tiger, King Cheetah, Lemurs, Kangaroos, Sloths and the birds. In all my trips to the area, I have never gone here thinking it would be too touristy. Honestly, this is a really well done zoo/park. As others have said the bonus is that you get up close and personal with the animals, especially in the drive through portion! Those animals aren't stupid, they know where the food is and come right up to your car. The park itself is beautiful- these animals have plenty of space, shade and shelter as well as ponds to cool off in on a hot summer day. If you are in the area, this is a must go. Okay, I never thought this was a thing anywhere, and I hope it manages to stay this way. You could spend hours here. There are a lot of things to do but being on a road trip I was only able to focus on the main event which was the drive-through safari. Yes, I have done those before. There was the Six Flags Wild Safari in NJ that closed in 2012, but I hear it reopened in 2022. The monkeys were kind of the main attraction there as they took things off your car as you made your way through. Well, there are no monkeys here and though there are times you wonder if your car is safe, it certainly seems to be the case. What is different is that you get buckets of food when you get your ticket from the window before driving into the place. What, food? I did no research ahead of time and just went here because of a roadside advertisement, so this was a complete surprise. Well, it was the most amazing thing I have experienced in a long time. The list of animals is long. There seem to be basically two sections that are controlled by cattle guards, so the animals stay in one place or the other. Ostriches, Emus, Fallow Deer, Llamas, Wildebeest, Water Buffalo, and more, much more... my favorite? The zebras. Yeap, never thought there would be a zebra head coming into my car window to feed from a bucket in my hands. I knid of felt bad for the shorter animals. They are mostly fed from people that would drop the food on the ground for them. With some patience you could actually pour some food into their mouths from the bucket though! The animals were all super friendly, and they seemed to all be in perfect health. The route through the place is pretty long, so you need to measure out the bucket to take it all in for the full experience. Yeah, you are going to get a bunch of food spilled in the car...and nose prints on your windows. Oh well, time for a vacuum and car wash! read more

100% fun. A bizillion stars. I love it so much that I drove an hour out of my way in August to come here by myself, and brought the kids back this weekend. Where else can you pet and feed goats, camels, budgies, peacocks, chickens, giraffes, llamas, emus, ostriches, wakusies, greater rheas, elk, deer of all kinds, zebras, pigs, yaks, wildebeests, highland cows, bison, and more?! Pro tips: go earlier. They only get busier unless you go at the end of the day! Buy all of your food before you get started. During different seasons they might recommend to buy lettuce at another location closest to the giraffes, but my preference is to get it all at once. If you can afford it, get more than you need. For example, for the budgie sticks I usually buy two per person. Lettuce cups are more pricey, so I usually get at least one extra. Feed buckets--more is more. The poor animals at the end usually go without because of the piggy animals at the beginning of the drive! Today we got one extra bucket and it wasn't enough. And speaking of, hold onto your buckets! I love drive thru safaris! The animals come right to the car and eat from you. Buy buckets. Don't let the animals grab the bucket from your hand. All the food will then go all over and you've just lost a whole bucket so hang on tight. This drive had some big hills but was nice overall with a few very nice water areas. We didn't get to explore much of the zoo area as it was about to thunderstorm badly. Four of my friends and I toured the Safari Park and had such an amazing time! Four of us had buckets of feed, and it seemed every animal in the drive-thru section of the park knew it. We were all amazed at the variety of the wildlife that were living in what seemed to be common habitat. They weren't shy about sticking their heads in car windows to get food from our buckets either. Never did we feel threatened by any animal while we were in the park. You can choose to take your own vehicle or ride on a safari park one. There were giraffes, ostriches, buffalo, zebra, rhinos, llamas, camels, tigers, cheetahs, monkeys, penguins, all sorts of birds... Obviously the high risk animals are in high security habitats, and the birds are in lovely aviaries. In the parakeet aviary you can walk in and have the birds land on feeding sticks you hold in your hand. I'm not a bird person, but I actually really enjoyed this. I have to admit my very favorite part was in the "petting zoo" area. There I met the most engaging young camel. Why I really like camels I don't know, but this goes back to early childhood. The first art award I ever won was in the 4th grade and it was a sculpture of a camel. See my attached picture; this boy was so sweet! Let me also state categorically that these animals are extremely well cared for - this is NOT a roadside zoo! All of us had a fabulous time and we all recommend Safari Park as a great experience for all ages. We arrived at 3:02 PM, which is before the posted "last car 3:30" sign. We paid about $60 for two people and a feed bucket. Staff told us the walk-through area was included, so we did that first. When we went to the drive-through at 3:39 PM, the gate was already locked with no warning. No one told us the drive-through gate closes at 3:30 no matter what, and there are no signs anywhere inside the park explaining this. Since we were already inside before 3:30, we assumed we could do both parts. We returned our unused feed bucket and were only offered a small cup of goat feed--no partial refund, no discount, and no next-day entry. We drove from Nashville and paid full price for half the experience. This could be easily fixed with clear communication and consistent signage. read more

Love this place and just like to come regularly. There's nothing like being able to feed a bison or watusi cows, highland cattle, reindeer, or elk. Those llamas are pushy at the entrance so I skip them! It's a well maintained, enjoyable experience less than an hour from home. I especially like to come when it's cooler weather and during the week. Highly recommend you combine a visit here with the Natural Bridge state park which is a masterpiece. They are very close by. For a full day, head to Lexington for breakfast lunch or dinner and some great shops and museums. read more

Really neat park! It has 2 parts-- one where you can walk on foot and the other is a drive through. The walk through has lots of anmial exhibits- kangaroos, tigers, cheetahs, turtles, an aviary, peafowl, farm animals, giraffes, etc.-- a children's playground, and grill/snack bar with picnic tables and pavilions. My kids both enjoyed the aviary (you can feed the birds) and the youngest liked the playground. There is a souvenir shop where you can buy extra food for the animals and get your fill of stuffed animals, shirts, magnets, etc. There is a penny machine, which I was very excited about. The drive through is INTENSE lol. If you buy the buckets of food, HANG ON TO THEM. The animals, especially at the beginning of the tour will do whatever it takes to get your food-- to include stick their heads in your car windows and rip the buckets out of your hands. They have no problem walking in front of and leaning on your car. My son lost his bucket early on, but I held onto mine and was abke to feed some of the animals further along in the tour. Safari Park exceeded our expectations! We had so much fun driving thru and feeding the animals. We showed up an hour after opening so the animals were hungry and many greeted us at the gate. Kids loved it and so did we. Lost a couple buckets of food to some hungry animals but added to the fun. We laughed and had a blast. From beginning to end the staff were outstanding. Everyone was so helpful, attentive and available. Not knowing what to expect, we didn't sign up for a few things like wagon tour or penguin visit but we will surely be back. Visited back in November on our way home on I-81. I'd been wanting to go for years, being a VT graduate, but I hadn't had the chance. We did the drive thru safari and purchased a feeding cup for $5 as well as lettuce to feed the giraffes. The total for 2 people with these add-ons was about $70 but well worth it. The drive thru started with plenty of animals coming to our window. They gave us a little booklet where you can learn about each animal. The speeds are limited while you drive so you do really get to enjoy and feed many animals. The photo opportunities were plenty and the variety of animals was great as I didn't expect to see so many different ones. The overall drive thru took about 1 hour and we were able to ration our food cup to last this long. Note, some of the animals are hungrier :) and will try to put their heads in your car so prepare to be messy! After the drive thru, we were able to walk the zoo area on foot. This took us about 45 minutes and we got to see kangaroos, vultures, baby goats, etc. This is where we fed the giraffe. For the $5 lettuce cup, you do get 3 pieces but we decided to break this up a bit to make it last longer which allowed us more time for a photo opp. Overall, this was a very fun activity and I wish I'd gone sooner. It was easily accessible off the highway and parking was not bad. I highly recommend this if you're passing on I-81. Also would be great for families. read more

This place was truly a memorable experience for all of us. You can really make a day of it here. First, we drove through the safari. It was a little intense, in the beginning, as you kind of get bum rushed by all the animals trying to get a snack, as you drive in. The animals literally block your path to try to get fed. It was CRAZY! So yes, a little scary the first few minutes, but then we realized, they're just wanting a snack, they are fine. The moose did rip my food bucked out of my hand, literally, but I also shouldn't have been holding the bucket out the car; this was before I realized its better to let the animals stick their heads in and feed from inside the car. There's many llamas, deer, highland cows, a few moose, a couple potbellied pigs/etc., on the safari. Next, we walked into the Safari village. We saw baby goats, kangaroos, some exotic lemurs/etc. The best part in the village was definitely the budgies. $7 gets you for "budgie sticks", but they actually last a really long time. The birds were all over us. After we went into the gift shop, we did drive back through the safari. All in all, we were there about four or so hours. It was very much worth the price of admission! The kids will never forget it! Side note - there are vacuums (you do need to pay) as you're leaving - well worth it, because you will get your car super messy. Disappointed by Strict Pet Policy and Unwelcoming Experience We had high hopes for our visit, but unfortunately, our experience was cut short--and quite disappointing--because we brought our small lap dog along. He was quietly sitting in the back seat of our pickup truck, secure and calm, and we had no intention of letting him out or disrupting anything. We understood that dogs weren't allowed in the walking areas of the park, but we assumed that having him contained in our vehicle would be fine. Unfortunately, that wasn't the case. Staff made us leave immediately and treated us like we were doing something wrong or dangerous. We were even denied a quick stop to use the restroom--we pulled up to park for just a moment so I could run in, and they turned us away. I ended up rushing to a Shell station outside the park and barely made it in time. It was incredibly disappointing to drive all that way only to be turned around, especially over a misunderstanding. We plan to return in the future without our pup, but this experience left a sour taste. A little more empathy and clearer communication about pet policies would go a long way. read more

We brought a bag to dump food in so we could ration it better during the drive. We looked at the map but still ran out for animals at the end of the drive. You go back through llamas so skip feeding them at the beginning & do it at the end. We had food all in our front seat but didn't care. Some animals are brave & will stick head in cars. Others are shy. We rolled our windows up and waited patiently for some brave ones to get bored to feed the ones that were a bit more shy. The budgie sticks are to feed birds When you pay for the access, you get to walk the "walk-thru" areas also. I would highly recommend you do the walk also as there were some cool sites and things we got to do there that made the experience (see picture). Big warning - HOLD ONTO YOUR BUCKET when feeding the animals. They've learned to either try and steal, tip, or dive into the bucket when you go to take it away. My wife was lax on holding her bucket and another animal snuck up from behind and completely tipped it out of her hand. My daughter resorted to tossing some pellets out of the car since they were so aggressive. So I highly recommend buying a backup bucket of food for the drive threw portion. They have other feeding encounters. We chose Budgie (birds) not great because none of them where hungry. That's ok because we also chose to feed the giraffes. This was my first encounter with Giraffes. IT was so AMAZING!!!!! I'm hooked. I love feeding animals. The walk through part is just as wonderful. It is well kept and all of the animals are happy. The entire park is just beautiful. Plenty of friendly staff. We have been coming here for years! It's an incredibly funny experience! We always laugh and get slobbered on through the whole 3 miles, and it's so fun! This is truly a unique experience. We try to come every year. My little sister loves it. Be sure to get there early! We arrived at 930 and got right in but noticed quite a long line when leaving around 1230. I highly recommend this experience but be prepared to get blocked in by animals, have your car scratched, and to get slobbered on. They will also try to take your buckets so, have a tight grip!! Also, the walk through part is great too. Don't waste your money on the giraffes.. but do buy the budgee sticks! I love walking through the little birds. So many pros and cons and helpful tips for 1st time visitors. You learn quickly after your 1st visit. This was my 1st visit after wanting to go for over 10 years. I was with 4 other adults. We bought the tickets online with no problems and checked in Saturday morning around 10 am. They give you a map and you go. Go to the restrooms first and get then get ready for about an hour at the drive thru safari. Bring towels, cover your seats with blankets. Also bring wet wipes and hand sanitizer and be prepared. The animals know you have food and they will stick their heads right in your vehicle. They are very big and strong. We lost 1 bucket of feed fairly early. If you are looking at the animal coming in the drivers side window be prepared for an animal on the passenger side window to show up. They do swarm the car early on and can be a bit much. I do wish there was someone there to control them a bit more. The rest of the drive was easier and so cool. Do NOT go over 5 mph. Just go in with the mindset of taking your car to a car wash when you are done. It was so awesome to see these animals up close. Now....for the zoo part. Probably could have skipped it. I feel terrible for those animals and some in very small cages for the breed....like the tigers. The giraffes were very cool and glad we got to do that. The encounters were not worth the money unless it's your favorite animal or something to check off the bucket list. We did do the $12 bundle for everyone and it was worth it. You got feed for the goats and they are so cute. 2 budgie sticks which was cool for about 3 minutes and only if you got a bird to land on you. And then we got lettuce for the giraffes. We had so much fun at the Safari. I think we spent a good 2+ hours here. However it was not all fun. We have two toddlers and they were traumatized by the feeding of the animals in the car as the animals are rather aggressive about sticking their heads in and getting the feed. We eventually wanted to close the windows but had to wait for a safe area as to not injury the animal. I recommend if you are unsure to start the safari with windows closed first because the beginning is where most of the animals are first and very dense. As you get about 500 feet down it is more spread out. You will have plenty of opportunity of feeding animals so don't worry. There are areas where the animals are not as tall so they won't stick their heads inside. Also expect a lot of spilt feed in your car. A llama also sneezed on us. :) Despite that again once we got to a more calm area it was loads of fun and lots of laughs. Eventually a bison stole the feed bucket. We did the walk through park too and fed goats, budgies (little birds) and another bird section. We bought lettuce for the giraffe but they weren't interested. As another reviewer mentions later in the afternoon I think the giraffes are full. The budgie section is also an area of caution for some people who may not want the birds on them. The kiddos were a little frightened by the small claws (not painful). It was so cool though! The gift shop has several little animal toys if you are into souvenirs. read more

[935] 6/18/2019 I'm a fan! Hubby stumbled across this place and yelp said we should visit. We took the 1 1/2 ride and we're not disappointed. Its an interactive place. You can take a wagon thru the safari or drive thru in your car. We drove. You can buy buckets of feed @4 bucks a pop. We picked up 4 and needed way more as we didn't realize how large this place is (sits on 180 acres I Believe). We fed bison, pigs, ostriches, deer, emu, llama and so many other animals on our drive. We ended up going thru twice with 7 more buckets of feed. Lol There is a walking component were we fed the giraffe. Pretty cool as they walk up to you to be fed. There is a nice air conditioned spot upstairs for Hershey's ice cream which we enjoyed. I highly recommended this place. Definitely worth the 3 hour round trip ride. We will be back read more

Virginia Safari Park exceeds all expectations of what you might think you will encounter here! Hopefully you're reading this review before you go because it is essential you know these facts: 1) You might get animal slobber and feed all over your car especially if you let the animals heads inside to eat from the bucket. Some animals are extremely messy eaters! Be prepared with wipes or a dust pan type brush. Or, just go on the wagon ride instead. A llama sneezed in my daughter's face! 2) Plan to spend at least a couple hours here to check to just enjoy the presence of the friendly animals! Be respectful and take it slow while driving around the majestic beasts! On their website, they make it clear that in 2015 it ranked in the Top 10 of FamilyFun Magazine of family-friendly things to do in the entire US. I don't know where the rankings are today, but I think it should still be ranked highly! This place is amazing! Why? Basically, many long-necked animals come right to your car window (and may even stick their heads inside) to grab some animal feed that they know you have! The animals are super friendly and know you have some tasty snacks so are not afraid to come near you. It's scary because you don't want to hurt them (and don't want their horns to scratch your car!). On top of the great drive-thru animal interaction, they have a traditional walking zoo area where you can see monkeys, snakes, goats, vultures, owls, tigers, lions, penguins, kangaroos, giraffes. It's like everything you've ever dreamed of and you can get up real close! During my visit, there was a goat that had just been born a couple hours before we arrived! The staff is friendly and the facilities were well-maintained. My friends and I were almost going to cancel our trip because it was raining most of the day, but it was still a great time and I'm happy we ended up going to this seemingly random zoo. Nothing screams America more than being able to do everything drive-thru style, comfortable in your climate-controlled vehicle. I have to admit I was a little worried about this concept. I hate visiting zoos because it gives me a feel of animal neglect when they should roam free! In fact, here they do! They have 180 acres to do so! The animals seem to really enjoy the human interaction and food provided. As long as you have good fun following the rules of the park to protect the animals-it's great. They provide you with a pamphlet upon entering the park to learn about each species, and even check them off as you see them. The llamas were super friendly and I just loved the penguins!!! Overall just a great experience for families, and adults!! Entrance fee is $21.95 for adults and a bucket of feed ($4 each) goes quick so get more than one! Make sure to save some CASH for bird foods for the bird sanctuary, lettuce for the separate giraffe area, and goat pellets. Bigger animals on the trail do leave some slobber and mess in the car, so if you have a new or clean car I recommend doing the wagon ride instead. It's no joke! They also have picnic areas and do kids birthdays and an awesome gift shop. I saw a small snack pagoda as well with classic treats like nachos, ice cream, and drinks. This was a pretty awesome visit. I, like others, was a little skeptical but we decided to make the stop. Probably doesn't hurt that it was a beautiful day. The animal food purchase was worth it and resulted a lot of friendly visitors. Many of the animals were in seasonal transition with lots of fur and feathers coming loose. There were many visitors to our vehicle and a couple of feed spills. There is a lot of open space for the animals that was very nice to see. The bird house is a good visit as well. The bird stick is worth it too if you want to get close to the birds. The reptiles were not my cup of tea but if you are interested it can also be work a visit. I would definitely recommend it to anyone visiting the area. read more
