They are there to help! Be kind or be gone!

Coming into care for a family members dog who had recently passed away on Mother's Day, was not on my bingo card for this year. Not only does she have behavioral issues, she has a plethora of previous medical issues as well with a new one brewing. I came to visit family when tragedy struck and we lost our brother in law. Everyone kind of takes a role on when things occur, cleaning, meals, calls, etc. I work in a veterinary ER in Virginia Beach, so Snowball, our brother in laws first baby, became my role effortlessly. Unfortunately very quickly I knew something was wrong. Snowballs eye appeared to be bulging, irritated and uncomfortable. We took her into VVCF hoping they could help. They saw us rather quickly, listened to our concerns and took snowballs behavioral quirks into consideration with how they'd treat and evaluate her. They worked around her fears without directly muzzling (they used a cone instead), walked her to distract for injections etc. The team was great on their communication, efficient and quick with her care. Dr. Donahue was phenomenal, did not sugarcoat things, gave me clear expectations and was so sensitive to not only Snowball but also to us during this difficult time. We discovered Snowball had a mass behind her eye and would need her eye removed. They offered 3 locations for us to "shop" in addition to their services. We received great communication (calls through her visit with updates), great service, and honestly a great bill at the end. We had a refund of quite a bit from our deposit. Now here are some expectations coming into any ER. While my experience was wonderful, not everyone is going to be blessed with the same unfortunately. Wait times: they can be extensive. Extensive can be anywhere from 1 hour to 15 hours Here's the thing about waiting. If you're waiting a long time, whether you have your pet with you waiting or not, a lot of the time this is a GOOD thing. It means in comparison to another fur baby there, your fur baby is less critical. This does NOT mean you and your fur baby are less important. This means while the team behind closed doors are struggling to keep a patient alive, yours gets to sit with you in the lobby or in some comfy blankets in a kennel. Be prepared to wait, be prepared to be kind. Next up; PRICING. They run off a deposit system, so be prepared to pay about 80% of the high end estimate (they give you a paper with cost break down & review it with you before moving forward). Anything they don't use from the deposit, they refund back to you. They do allow care credit to be used for leaving deposit as well, they may just charge the high end of the estimate to help reduce your interest rates, as they can do one refund vs 2+ charges if they need to increase which will all be placed on different financial terms. Know before you go: The emergency consultation is $250. Does this sound like a lot? Sure. But you're coming to an emergency room. Think about going to a human emergency room, with or without insurance you'll need to wait a long time and still end up paying $300 for some $5 ibuprofen. It's emergency room care, they know it is expensive, they don't make the prices, so don't take it out on them. With that being said, be proactive. If you have a pet, look into insurance or care credit. Ideally before things happen. But be prepared for more expensive visits, medications, procedures etc due to the demand of it being an ER. You won't get the same bill as going to your primary doctor vs the hospital even if it's for the exact same symptoms or medical condition, so don't expect it to be different for animal medicine. Lastly, communication. We all want to be prioritized and we want to feel heard. In veterinary medicine, no news is good news. NO news is GOOD news. If your fur baby is there & you are not getting constant calls or even a call during your pets stay, this means your pet is STILL being cared for but again, is not as critical as another fur baby. The family that gets the immediate or routine calls is the one that may be preparing to have to say goodbye to their fur baby. You're not less important, you're just blessed to be less critical. So be kind, call for check ins if you need peace of mind but don't expect to have numerous or even a general call. Again, this is NOT a bad thing. With all of this being said, I want to SHOUT thank you to the staff for being so kind & empathetic to us and to our new fur baby. The heart and dedication of each team member we saw or encountered was beaming. Thank you thank you thank you!

    Prince 1/30/2023

On Monday, January 23, 2023, I took my cat, Prince, to this facility due to a tragedy that happens that evening. He hid in the dryer and was stuck in the dryer and for 5 minute. When we got him out, he was alive and panting really hard. We took him to Virginia Veterinary Center of Fredericksburg for the emergency. After checking in at the counter we were escorted to a waiting room. The receptionist came in and requested us to sign the estimate of $1400 to treat him . We accepted the charges. They took Prince away and Doctor Wolosshin came into the room and informed us that he won't survive and the new price to treat him would be $5.000. She told us that no matter what, Prince won't survive even after treatment. She described to us, in gruesome detail that his organs where boiled and scrambled, his brain was a fried egg and his blood was like hot oil. The only option left left was to euthanize him because he was in discomfort. She said she was Prince's advocate and did not want to see him suffer. My husband and I agreed. My husband asked to go see him prior to the procedure. He saw that Prince recieved fluids via IV and was recuperating in the ER room. He told the the technicians not to euthinzed him. Dr. Wolosshin came into the room very upset. She told us it would now be $7,000.00 if we do not treat him immediaatley. It was very akward how she kept talking about money and when we asked what tests she ran she could not give us and answer. She instead to us she assumed that was the condition he was in. She told us if we take him home, he was going to die of a stroke and it was inhumane to watch them die. She continued to pressure us to treat or euthanize him. Also she was going to notify the authorities because if we took him home he was going to be in placed in an abused situation. Regardless of her inadequate comment, we told her that we will take him home and take him to our veterinarian first thing in the morning. Dr Wolosshin threatened that she will inform the Fredericksburg county government ( police) and monitor us on our actions with Prince. Dr Wolosshin only provide fluids for Prince and a phyiscal. She didn't conduct blood work in checking his vitals. She informed us that, regarding a treatment solution, he will not have no chance of survivability. Thanks God we took him home and to our Vet ,He is fine and recuperating this trauma. Everything that she told us wasn't true and only assumptions. If my husband didn't went to see him and change our mind, Prince will be dead by now. I feel that your facility prey on people an distress and emphasized the possibility of ending the lives of pets without a sustainable reasons and without any test done . Furthermore the treat is what it make me more upset and they reported that they euthinzed Prince that night. According to many customers this seems to be a repetitive common practice . I spoke with The Dr Donahue in charge of the facility on 2/2/2023 she told me that she agrees with the Dr Wolosshin behavior who attended Prince ,according with Dr Wolosshin Prince was euthanized on site, which was false. This was a TRAUMATIC HORRIBLE experience and Dr Wolosshin took advantage of our emergency to nickle and dime us and Dr Donahue turned a blind eye to these behaviors. They assumed and conducted no blood work or xrays to confirm thier diagnosis. Pet owners should be very cautious with this place. If you own a pet, make sure you find and honest and reputable place to take them. Your pet will have a better chance to survive an emergency. Pictures of Prince today !

Ridiculously high cost care and long wait. Definitely affordable to only wealthy pet owners. Very disappointing.

You know you've heard that if your indoor-outdoor cat who always comes home one day doesn't come home one day, something has happened. Well, it's true. Usually, Pablo (a.k.a. Bunky) comes back within minutes after being let out, but this day was different. We looked for him and looked for him, but came up empty-handed. Pablo has an AirTag and, curiously, it showed he was on our property. Finally, he appeared around 10:00pm at the back door. We were relieved, but noticed he had wounds on his hind legs. Because of our excellent experience we had last year with VEG-ER, we brought Pablo here. Pablo received top-shelf compassionate treatment from the VEG-ER staff, each of whom has a heart of gold. I really admire, respect and appreciate people that devote their lives to the care of pets. They're a blessing. We were told Pablo did not experience an animal attack, but maybe got stuck on a fence, and slipped. Pablo is home recovering now, getting stronger by the day. We basically live in the woods, and realize fully now that it is just too dangerous here to let him outside unsupervised anymore..

I want to sincerely thank Dr. Boostrom and everyone in the office for the incredible care they provided these past couple of years. I'm so grateful that thanks to all their work and expertise, we were able to have those extra years with Choo Choo--years filled with love and memories I'll always cherish. Everyone at this office is genuinely kind and clearly devoted to what they do. They always treated Choo Choo with patience and gentle care--even though he was an anxious little guy (though the Trazodone probably helped, too!). It meant so much to see him feel calmer here than he did at most other places. If you're reading this and trying to decide which veterinary oncologist to choose for your pet, I 100% recommend Dr. Boostrom's office. We brought our beloved 17-year-old cat, Freddy, to VEG after he began experiencing seizures. Freddy had been bravely fighting advanced kidney disease, and we knew in our hearts it was time to help him cross the rainbow bridge. We were completely devastated and hysterically crying as we rushed him there. We called from the car to let them know we were on our way, and from the moment we walked through the doors, it was all hands on deck. The team's immediate response was incredible. They met us with urgency, kindness, and compassion at a time when we could barely think straight. I can't speak to the medical treatment VEG provides beyond this experience, but I can wholeheartedly speak to the compassion and professionalism they showed us. Every member of the staff treated Freddy with dignity and treated us with so much empathy during one of the hardest moments of our lives. A week later, we received a handwritten sympathy card signed by the staff. It brought me to tears. That small gesture meant more than I can put into words. After a less-than-stellar experience at another emergency veterinary hospital (Friendship), we were especially grateful for the care and compassion we received at VEG. Nothing can bring Freddy back, but the kindness shown to us that day has brought light to some very dark memories. For that, we will always be thankful.

When our dog got diagnosed with diabetes I took him in since I was worried about the potential eyesight loss that comes from that and she basically told me in very similar words: "if the diabetes doesn't get him the dry eye disease will". And left it at that, with the expectation that our 2 minute conversation would suffice. When I pressed with questions, I also learned that she had in her clinician notes that our dog had been basically blind in the left eye for last 3 years but had never told us that. We were only told over the years that he had "scarring" in left eye but never informed that meant he could not see at all. And one of the worst things, she was happy to tell us she can fit us in for pre-op whenever our dog does get cataracts (due to the diabetes). BUT never told us she doesn't actually do the surgery herself, or at hope center. So even if your pet did need emergency surgery, while hope center can do the pre-op, they will not be doing the eye surgery. It was very misleading the way she told me that and I only learned later that she doesn't even do the surgeries. I was heartbroken at seeing a doctor behave with such little empathy. Please avoid this doctor if you can, there are other local opthamologists that actually care about your pet that you should go to instead.

Dr. Pugh diagnosed that he had experienced a toxic reaction and suggested I hospitalize him overnight for observation. I was given an opportunity to say good night to him around 8:30 pm and I was happy to see him sitting in the cage looking good. Dr Pugh called around 11:30 pm to tell me that Ollie was doing well. He had a good poop and pee-peed but he had not eaten or drank water. The overnight Vet would call me after 8:00 am on May 24, 2026 to give me a follow up. Around 7:15 am, Dr Mason called, happy that I was up to tell me Ollie had a turn for the worst. She disagreed with the toxic reaction diagnoses saying she believed he had a brain tumor. She said he was circling to the left and hitting his head on the side of the cage. She also said he could not stand. The only way to know for sure if it was a brain tumor was to do and MRI, but that specialty was closed until Tuesday (Monday was Memorial Day) and she didn't believe she could keep him alive until Tuesday. She reminded me that some tumors are inoperable. Dr. Mason asked me to approve x-rays to see what might be going on, which I did. She recommended that I euthanize him. She asked that I come into the Center soonest so they could set up a time for me to say good bye. While in the exam room to say goodbye, Dr. Mason showed me an x-ray on her smart phone that showed a large mass in his abdomen. She opined that it had metastasized to his brain. After considerable thought, I believe Dr. Pugh's diagnosis was the correct diagnosis. Had I taken Ollie home at 8:30 pm I believe Ollie would have been fine but would have succumbed to the mass in his abdomen in the months ahead. Ollie was hitting his head on the cage because he was trying to get out. He was never caged. I don't believe that vomiting, rope drool, and panting, which I witnessed and rushed him to Hope for, are associated with brain tumors. On June 16, 2026, I attempted to take the survey Hope had sent me on May 29, 2026 only to discover it had expired.
