Dropped into Visible Books to co-work with a friend and was pleasantly surprised to see the former owner of Coffee Coffee Coffee was there. Even better, they still have some of the menu favorites, including the avocado toast, which was just as good as I remembered. The space is perfect for getting work done. Plenty of seating, reliable Wi-Fi, enough outlets to keep everything charged, and I had more than enough room for both my laptop and portable monitor. They also have a great selection of books if you need a break from the screen. The staff was welcoming, the coffee was excellent, and the avocado toast definitely lived up to the hype. My only note is that it runs a little chilly inside, so I'd bring a sweater. Other than that, it's an easy 10/10 and a spot I'll definitely be back to. read more

Visible Voice is a great addition to the Ohio City area. This bookstore is a fun place to meet friends for a coffee or a cocktail. I have been twice in the last week and both times were very satisfying. The staff were friendly and our drinks were made well. To be honest I could stroll around looking at books all afternoon. The books are arranged and each section is clearly marked. You do have to be aware used books are mixed in with new books. Overall it is a well curated selection. They have a calendar on the wall and host a variety of events. Everything from book clubs to concerts. It appears the stage is refurbished and seems the perfect size for an intimate concert or book reading. They even incorporated some old pews into the seating. Both times I visited it was difficult to find a seat. They have very comfortable seating on a second floor balcony but it was completely occupied. Parking is primarily street parking, either directly on Lorain or there are side streets close. read more

Very cool and unique bookstore, cafe, bar, and performance venue! We came on a Sunday afternoon for lunch. The coffee drinks were very good and the sandwiches were delicious too! We had to wait a while for our food but that's okay because it came out hot! The place was very crowded - we ended up having to sit on the benches at the theater to eat. This is one of my favorite book stores in the area! It gives more coffee shop vibes than true bookstore. There are plenty of places to sit and study, read, eat/drink. There is an old stage that's stunning. The workers are very helpful - I've even specialty ordered books here. This is a must see if you are a bookstore person! What a fabulous addition to Ohio City. Not only is the location beautifully curated and built out, the vibe of the establishment is just wonderful. They have a huge collection of used books in very , very good condition as well as new books. AND they have GLUTEN FREE bread! Their food is delicious (bread pudding is to die for), plus they have wine which is really nice. The staff is really friendly and knowledgeable. I have been in lots of book stores all over the country but have never been in one as beautifully done as Visible Voice Books is. There are a number of areas to sit and read in or have a conversation, (with very comfortable seating) not to mention the large table for groups or book clubs upstairs...AND the old time theater that is used for open mike nights, poetry readings, book talks and concerts. Risked my life in pursuit of yet more books yesterday. With each passing minute, the ice and sludge and traffic grew worse in Cleveland, but I was determined to discover a new bookstore. Beautiful space, good music, friendly staff, and an excellent selection. They have all of the beautifully obscure literary classics that you just don't see in other bookstores -- and a large selection of NYRB titles. I left with two Nelson Algren's and two Chester Himes' -- feeling very much that gritty, seedy, urban underbelly mood as I trudged through dirty city snow, and drove home through some rougher parts of town. If I'd had more time, who knows what I might have left with! Definitely plan on a return visit! read more

I really wanted to like this bookstore because it came highly recommended. The aesthetic was quite nice but I was not acknowledged by any employees for the duration of my visit. I witnessed the staff engaging with other visitors but no one greeted me, offered any assistance, or acknowledged my existence. I browsed some titles, and wasn't that interested in what I saw, but definitely would have lingered longer if I felt more welcome. I'd like to give it another try and visit the pizza shop as well but I'm unlikely to return. I hope your experience is better than mine. read more

Despite seeming small, you could look around for a good hour or two, as it's fairly well curated. You might find a treasure you'd been looking for for years. Clean, modern, nice music and staff. Reasonable prices for the used books, which are mixed in with the new. Greeting cards, zines, a staff picks section. There is a little area with four or five really nice table and chair sets, to sit and read or have coffee or wine. It's dusty though, and very loud from the AC. read more

This place was so amazing! It's just a small little attic type bookstore in Cleveland. It is such an eclectic little place! It's a bit old Fashioned (in a great way)! It's also trendy and very cooll! One wall is decorated to look like a huge stack of books! As you can see from my photos, this is a great photo op spot! I noticed that they had a great variety of books and there was a book club going on upstairs. They sold reasonably & lower priced T-shirts(for the book connoisseur in you or in your life!)...The lower floor had a great coffee shop. There were seats upstairs and downstairs. Every person that we came across during our visit was extremely friendly & helpful! I also noticed that they had no political agenda and all views were represented on their bookshelves. There's a bookstore in Tremont. Did everyone know this but me? Because I accidentally walked past this place then literally double backed and gaped at their sign. There's a bookstore in Tremont!!! I walked up their stairs (decorated with literary quotes, cute!) and sort of just breathed it in for a second. It's not large but it's packed full of books. I'm impressed with the number of genres they fit in to this place. The prices seem comparable to Barnes and Nobel so no, it's not cheap. But it's lovely. Apart from the books there a section of seating, and they serve a small selection of coffee and tea as well as wine. The vibe is definitely more of a seat and read or write sort of place rather than a meet up to chat with friends but it's nice to have this sort of place as well. I am definitely coming back! read more

Super cool second hand locally owned bookstore on the second floor of a building on top of a coffee shop! Full of second hand books and new books. On top of books they also sell cards and fun little knick knacks! There's also a cute cafe area with free WiFi where you can work and have a nice cup of coffee. The reason why I am not eating it five stars is due to the lack of accessibility for people who may be handicapped. Hopefully they will be able to expand this location or move/expand to one that is! Bookstores are kind of my thing. I love to read. I go through several books a month and still love browsing bookstores anywhere, at any moment. The culture of bookstores is slowly dying and its up to the bibliophiles to keep it alive. But literary culture is hopefully alive at Visible Voice. They had a wonderful selection. A few sections for me truly shined. The children's selection contained all the baby-feminist books I've been searching for and special one-of-a-kind titles I'd joyously purchase for my niece and nephew. I also love to read poetry and am pre-programmed to not get my hopes up - but alas, they had a fairly sizable section! I was also impressed with the cooking/home selection and the social issues section. Both contained interesting titles instead of just the same 5 cookbooks and same 5 feminist/political science titles. I walked in with no intentions and walked out with two excellent gifts for friends I've been stumped on! They also have a small, comfortable cafe with free wi-fi. They serve coffee and wine and definitely encourage an environment to stay and hang out. So why not 5 stars? The building isn't accessible. If it is, than the employee working told me otherwise. Visible Voice is located on the second floor of the building and the only entry is up a fairly deep staircase. Sad face if you have trouble with stairs. Otherwise, a great place. I came here on a rainy day and had the whole place to myself. Stop by! read more

Guess who's back - besides the real Slim Shady and JT? Although I didn't have the pleasure of knowing the old Visible Voice, their new space is a revamped, contemporary store with all the trappings of a 21st century literary salon: books, seating, coffee, of course the two crucial "w's" - wine and Wi-Fi. You can access the store by way of the Crust street-facing entrance, where you'll follow literary quotes up a set of stairs. Or, you can park in the designated parking in back and climb the open-air staircase directly to the store, avoiding the aromatic temptations of cheese and tomato sauce. The half of the store that functions as a cafe consists of several small tables, probably good for two laptops at most, but of a sturdy industrial steel and lacquered wood. No coffee or wine shall stain these surfaces, regardless of the coasters emblazoned with Murakami quotes. They have a small selection of coffee and tea, as well as artisan pastries. Wine and beer are available by the glass or bottle. Unfortunately it doesn't have that comfy lounge vibe that invites people to stay and catch-up with a long-lost friend (while everyone else listens in), but it's exactly the sort of spot you could curl up alone with a good book and bottle of beer. The rest of the store is classic bookstore, simple earthy color blocks interrupted by vivid book covers and posters. Despite being limited by the square footage, Visible Voice manages to pack quite a few genres into the space including recent bestsellers, textbooks, and movies. Apparently they also buy back gently used books that "fit the aesthetic of the store". Had too much coffee or vino while perusing the shop? Not to worry, there is in fact a single restroom on the cafe side. Like the rest of the store, it's sparse, clean, and not oft-frequented yet. I've only ever seen one or two employees at a given time in the store, and they didn't seem very chatty. But hopefully business picks up because it'd be a shame to let this new space go to waste! read more

I came down here after driving to three different bookstores in the area that all happened to be closed and I have to say the trek was well worth it. Visible Voice doesn't have a particularly large or unique selection, but boy do they have some gems buried in there. They also probably have the most extensive music section of any bookstore I've ever been to that isn't a dedicated music bookstore. The atmosphere was super lively! like there were so many pairs of friends or partners who came in and just openly chatted with one another about books or whatever else. I know typically bookstores are supposed to be rather quiet but it felt nice to be in one where people were so openly excited to be there! I ended up asking the cool girl who works there for a recommendation and she recommended me Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins. She was very helpful and funny and I trusted her recommendation immediately (and boy did it end ip being a good recommendation). Not sure what her name is or if she'll see this but just know if you visit this place that the staff is great and gives great recs. read more

What a gem. Book store, wine bar, coffee shop. All in one, all my fav things. I had a glass of wine and found a new fav, the Radio Boca Tempranillo was the bomb. I bought two books and enjoyed family time chatting away. This place gets 5 Stars for ambiance and uniqueness but their coffee is subpar. They just had basic coffee, no espresso or cappuccinos.
