Had a great time in the stacks today. These books call to you from the shelves...begging to be picked up and read. The customer service was adequate. I only really got one "smile" and that was almost forced. But I'm bringing home a haul of books, dvds, and a game for under $35...so I can't talk at that! Will I come back, sure! Will it be soon? This HPB location is almost as good as the old Big Half Priced Books on Lane in Columbus (yes, we call it The Big HPB). Great selection, good sized clearance section, lots of books. Good prices. Lots of books (did I already say that?). Per the usual, I waddled out with arms bursting with my haul. I got a mix of Clearance fiction and some new non fiction. They have cute gift items as well, and the people are friendly. I did sell back a stack on a previous trip, and was not impressed with the buy back prices, but that's pretty much normal for consignment, and it did (temporarily) reduce the book burden in my house, which was the goal. Book burden was replaced during subsequent visit and has been returned to stasis. read more

Great place. Half Price Books has something for each and everyone in your outing. There are half priced and cheaper books - and there are also a bunch of fancy new ones. Some books are sold in brilliant new binds, ornamented and with pristine page numbers. The staff is wonderful and helpful. They provide carry baskets and carts for all your purchases. A real gem! Right in a strip center, you'll see this big red sign for the store. Free parking, but the lot can fill up fast. They will buy your old books, board games, music, and movies. I gathered up 2-3 bags of fiction, textbooks, and music to see what I could get. Though it was just $10, I thought it was better than nothing. Also, even if they cannot offer much (or anything) they will recycle the items for you! So, it was a win-win for me! I planned to donate them if I couldn't sell. So, they helped me out with that! The staff is friendly. They even came out to my car to help carry in some items when I requested assistance. So, if you have a lot to bring in, just stop inside first and let them know you need assistance. Either they'll carry items or bring out a cart to help roll it all in. Next, head to the left and leave all your items there. Let them know if you want to sell or if you are just dropping off to donate. If selling, they'll ask for an ID and your name. While they assess the items in roughly 15 minutes, you can walk around until you are paged on the intercom. Once you get an offer and accept, you will get a receipt. Then you sign the slip and take to a register to cash out. The store is large and you can easily pass the time. Restrooms are available. There is a full section devoted to children's books too! This store is big. They sell all sorts of books ranging from school books, drama, mystery, law, sports, etc. They have a collection of fiction and non-fiction books. They also sell CD's for those who love listening to music. You can really find alot of used books here. I'm not sure if they sell new books but they probably do. Just like a previous reviewer, I have some CONS about this store. SELLING YOUR BOOKS -- It is nice that you can sell your used books here but they give back very little money. I recently came in on 28 May 2019 to sell a few books. They literally quoted me $2.95 for three items total - a big Law textbook, a Spanish dictionary, and a new (unused) workout/exercise DVD. What a rip off!! Why would I accept less than $3 on all 3 items? I couldn't even at least get $10 for the law textbook which I get was an older edition but regardless, it was a well conditioned (gently used) book. I gladly took my items back and left the store. It's unfortunate that their business practice of buying used books is very poor. Half Price Books is awesome! I could spend hours in here! They have a vast variety of used and new books and their prices are great. The kids section has a lot of options from games, toys, activity books, and assorted little trinkets. It's been my go-to place for Christmas shopping for years now. Sign up for their emails and texts you'll get notified of big sales and online promo codes. Around the holiday season, they play the radio commercials..."It's a BIG sale at Half Priced Books...". You can also bring in your old books, games, music, and movies to trade in or sell. I haven't done this, but I can't imagine they'd offer a whole lot since their prices are so low as it is. I went yesterday to purchase a book I had put on hold, for my daughters class. The wrong book was purchased so I had to go today to exchange it for the correct book. The only two copies they had there has writing all over them and inside the books. The price they charge shouldn't be more than what you can buy the book for new on Amazon. A new book on Amazon is seven dollars but I can't wait a week to get it so I had to purchase it from here. The gentleman behind the counter yesterday was pleasant but the man behind the counter today seemed a little irritated and unfriendly. read more

The store used to be better, but in recent years the company began focusing on profits above all else. They purged their staff of it's senior employees in 2020, (I'm friends with several, the company fired over 2000 people on April 2, 2020,) and the quality of service has never recovered as they focused on replacing them with part timers and temps. You get paid less now, and prices are higher, and the staff just don't know the store as well. The people there are still nice, but at the higher levels the rot has set in. read more

I wasn't impressed with my visit. I also brought two boxes of like new, thick, hard bound books there to sell. I wasn't expecting a lot but something fair. It wasn't worth my time for the few dollars that was given. I couldn't buy a Sunday Plain Dealer with what I received. They give you pocket change for dozens of quality books and sell them for $7.50 each. If you have books you don't need, take my advice and donate them to a charity or library. read more

First time taking in books to sell. Big mistake. We took in about 40 books. Some collectors editions, old novels, even a couple first editions. As we waited our turn we could see others receiving their offers. $5.00 here, $8.00 there. We received a whopping $12 offer. For over 40 books. All hardcover and well maintained. It is a real head scratcher as to why their prices are as high as they are considering how little they pay for their books. They are banking on the idea that most folks won't want to lug all the books back home so they take their insulting offer. You are better off donating to a good cause than to give this business the gift of cheap books that they can flip for a 95% profit margin. read more

My children and I come here a couple times a year to either buy or sell books. They love the kids corner in the back and run straight for it. I personally like this store for gift ideas. I've can find something for almost anyone. I would give them 5 stars but my first trip here I bought a book (not aware they sell used books too) that had tears and writing on some of the pages and the book was actually cheaper brand new at another store down the road! read more

And I continue to ask, beg, ponder WHY this store will not come to Detroit area?? Every time I am in Cleveland for business, I squeeze in a few hours here. The selection is amazing, from new books to 1960's National Geographics for a quarter! The service is amazing: I had 8 oversized totes stuffed with books to sell back and he was done in 15 minutes. (Don't expect that if you come during busiest hours because people will be in line in front of you) I almost always spend the money they give me right back in the store but it's such a fun way to spend an afternoon. I save every book when I'm done for my next trip to Cleveland and then hit N Olmstead en route. My daughter has grown up on books from here, buying and selling back, and it's managed to keep her over stocked without breaking the bank all these years. read more

The place is O.k. t used to be better. They have a nice selection of books. However the real bargains on books is gone. Very few bargains. The items they have are not all half price. You can find better deals online. Forget about the exchange program. They offer very little for what you bring in. And before that, there was the venerable old Booksellers where one evening I met the adorable and witty Albert Petrak (recently deceased), long-time announcer for WCLV, Cleveland's classical radio station. I was just one of his many fans, but he was so sweet---as I expected he'd be---that without any encouragement whatsoever, he graciously shared nearly 30 minutes of his time, as we discussed a number of music-related topics. That chance meeting, running into past friends from years ago, (even Muhammad Ali in Chicago ---gosh---he was HUGE), finding the perfect book, CD, film, or gift...I LOVE almost everything about bookstores. Everything except getting book-neck. Half Price Books may not have a refined ambiance, spaciousness, cushy seating, specialty baked goods, imported chocolates, freshly brewed coffee, or a wine bar, but it's a bookstore!---so, of course, that's got to be good. And you might even run into a celebrity, too---a smart one hunting for bargains. Like Border's frugal little relative---the manager laughed at that---Half Price has it's own unique and friendly personality. Another 5 star reviewer likened it to a huge garage sale. HaHa---yes, I suppose so--but a well-organized garage sale. It's certainly more casual and laid-back than those others, but no less inviting, and despite the used items (some pristine) among plenty of brand new, all items are displayed neatly enough---not a mixed-up haphazard jumble of things. (At least what I've looked through.) If you're a former Border lover, and haven't yet been to a Half Price location, you'll still have fun---on a much smaller scale. And you'll see---unlike traditional stores---that there may be only ONE of a particular book you're interested in, but hesitating. Just grab it---it might not be there the next time you come. And it was on my third visit, walking out the door, that I discovered the incredible values available to anyone taking just a minute or two to scan the book carts on the sidewalk. I hadn't bothered before, because seeing $1 prices on some as I walked past, I figured it was full of losers. Not so. Fairly recent editions of two full-color glossy oversized cookbooks by Bobby Flay $1 and Ellie Krieger $3, another 3 cookbooks, plus two books ($3 each) by the horridly irreverent---but so likeable---clever-brain Bourdain. In no time at all, I added 7 more NEW books to the 5 I just purchased. So don't ignore those carts as you pass---you might find 5 pounds for less than $10. * This store reminds me of some shops (head and book) from that era, where you'd find "dudes" in well-worn fringed leather jackets, granny-glass-wearing "chicks" in swishing ankle-length skirts, long long hair and love beads on both, Jimi Hendrix on the audio system while forever inhaling patchouli incense, and a couple of peace-sign-stickered and flower-splashed VW buses in the parking lot---with probably less than 3 gallons of gas between them. I love books and always end up spending too much money on certain websites for them. They got rid of the HPB I loved in Fairview Park but I decided to venture to North Olmsted to go to the other one. I just love this place. They have everything! As with any overwhelming store I try and bring a list. And now that I have a toddler and don't have hours to idly stand and peruse the aisles, a list is paramount! I get books for work, books for my daughter, Christmas gifts, books for me and all sorts of other goodies. And don't forget, they take your unwanted items and give you cash or store credit. The half price thing only goes so far and a savvy shopper might not be able to do the math to figure it all out. I'll try to keep it real simple: Let's say you want The Great Book of Amber and all you got is ten bones. You go here figuring you'll score the book for maybe six and get you a bag of taco bell for the road. The list price of the book is 16 and they got it down to eight and a quarter when you walk into the store. So, the price upon your arrival is $8.25. You figure that it's yours for exactly four dollars twelve cents and a ha' penny because the books are half-priced. No, Charlie. No. Not going to happen because they do the math before they price the books...which means you can't get no taco bell. So I called them on it. with limited success. I want this book for half price. It is half price already. But I want it for half the price you got written here. (I raise my voice and make a scene) Fine. You can have it for $4.50. Are you, sir, telling me the new price is four dollars and fifty cents? Yes. I want it for half the price, so I pay two and a quarter. If I give it to you for that price, will you leave? No, I will ask for half off. Forever? Forever. So, he gave it to me which is cool but don't go in figuring you can do the same because you don't smell like me and you don't look like me. I was at this location tonight with my mom who was there to sell a large box of books. She dropped her books off and told there would be a 5-10 minute wait to get her money receipt for the books. With that time we of course decided to look around at the millions of selections available! I found 2 great books before they called us back up to the desk. Unfortunately for 20ish books we sold back, some being hard back, we only received $3 back. This was disappointing and made me feel maybe these books would be better donated to the library or shelter. I used her $3 towards my purchase $13 purchase and called it a day. Half-Price books is great. They have a large selection of new and used books. I found just what I was looking for one afternoon on my way to a baptism. I was hoping to purchase a collection of Whinnie the Pooh. I found just what I wanted and at a very reasonable price. I also found a great collection of the little Golden Books. I was so happy; the perfect gift! Half-Price Books also offers a discount to educators. You just have to fill out a small form & they hook you up with 10% discount. Every little bit helps in my mind! With all the big bookstores closing their doors, Half Price Books is one of the few holdouts. I shed a few tears when I drive by an old Barnes and Noble so it gives me a bit of happiness to see that this place is still open. I dropped into this location with my family while we were waiting for our car to get serviced nearby. It's in a run-down strip mall that looks like it is near the point of abandonment but inside this store is a hidden gem. Unlike B&N, Half Price Books is special in that they buy and sell like-new used books. You can find some real treasures here if you're willing to dig into the shelves and stay awhile. Many of the large cities I've live in have had bookstores like this. This isn't one of the better ones but it is still nice and fills the need. Some of the prices on older books are just silly (especially since you can buy many of them for just the price of shipping online) but it's nice to be able to hold them in your hands. I've never sold books here because most of my physical book copies are pre-release review copies which HPB won't resell. That's a shame but not completely unexpected. Overall I like this store a lot. It has a great layout and plenty of appeal for those looking for something special. The staff aren't the friendliest but they're not terrible either so I can live with that. read more

Great place for used movies and reference books but their hobby and collectible selection is funny. They use AbeBooks for their pricing of rare items and it's often laughable....I've seen books worth $5 (in mint condition) in horrible shape sitting in their glass cabinets for $30-40. And books worth $30-50 can be found on the shelf for half price. No consistency. The worst part of HPB are the employees, many of whom are hippie throwbacks who are clueless at best and downright rude at worst. read more

Killing time before heading to the airport to drop me off, Kate, Z, and I stopped in here. This is a great bookstore with a huge selection of books. There is a clearance section where things are $1 - $3. I wish I'd seen that part earlier, but it was in the corner. Curses! I ended up getting a stack of 5 books here for $19 total, if I recall correctly. The Blind Assassin, three books for my dad for Christmas, and one more that has slipped my memory. They have a great selection of fiction, archeology, and war history. They also have the random assortment of stuff like a chocolate fondue set, D&D books, and toys that all other bookstores have started carrying, but they don't bonk you over the head with it like Border's might. I love this bookstore, and although I am bummed that it is closed for the week, I am excited that they are renovating and expanding. They are re-opening on June 7th, 2014. Along with the typical novels, calendars and coffee table books, they have great gift items like signed books and other items. I haven't checked out their movies and music, but other reviewers have. I've been to all the Half Price Books spots and they're all about the same. The printed materials are cheap. Good. Some decent titles. Good. No trendoids or shiny happy people. Good. Now the Bad. It smells. Like old books. True. But a little worse. Like the book geeks who work there and the book geek customers didnt wash the sleepies outta their eye corners or are still wearing the same undies and socks from last nite's Death Cab concert (or whoever!). I have grown up going to HPB! As a reader and former gamer, it was always one of my favorite trips to find some deal or treasure at HPB. This is a good location. Easy to get to. Close to 480 with plenty of parking. It's saved me a ton of money over the years. Workers are quick and polite, too. read more
