I was just seen by Dr Planitz last week for my yearly eye exam. I was able to be seen on just a day's notice. My regular eye doctor, Dr Clatanoff, was not available. I was in and out in less than an hour. Dr Planitz was very personable and provided clear explanations to all my questions. I've been a patient at Rio Eye Care since 2000, and I've had nothing but positive experiences. Dr Clatanoff has been amazing to work with due to my medical condition with my eyes. I never feel like I'm just a patient with him (or Dr Planitz). He has assisted me with referring me to the best available doctors for my eye surgery. He has been very open to feedback from me. He is very thorough when researching to ensure any questions I ask he has an answer for. When there has been mistakes with my orders, Dr Clatanoff has always done the right thing and has personably made sure my situation was resolved. I think the fact that my wife and 3 kids have been going here almost as long as I have, that it shows the level of trust I have with this place. I've seen some people complaining about the optimap. I everyone is entitled to their opinion. I personally prefer the optimap over having my eyes dilated. It provides a clear picture for the Doctor to not only ensure the current health of your eye, but it also gives them something to compare your eye to year after year. Makes it easier to spot issues. And correct problems early on. To me, it is worth the extra money to help protect my vision. Please don't fault a doctor for wanting to use the best that technology offers to help them do their job. I've also seen some complaints about the pricing at this place of business. First off, they provide a wide variety of frames to work with. For the people that are economically conscious, to those of us who like to have some style because our glasses are a necessity. I prefer Oakleys. Yes, they are on the expensive side. But Oakleys are expensive anywhere. My wife is on the opposite side of the spectrum. And Rio Eye Care has options that fit her needs and her budget she has set out for frames. As for the lenses, I have never once been pushed into purchasing anything that I did not want. Of course they have offered me extra options that I have declined. They are a business. They are looking to make my vision experience as great and perfect as possible. But when I have politely declined some of those options, they are cool with it. There is no high pressure sales atmosphere to deal with. And there has been various times I've asked Dr Clatanoff to try out new technologies for different types of contacts or eye procedures that were extremely expensive. With his research, and with his understanding of my eye condition, he has educated me on why some of the requests I've made would not work out for me. If he was just in this for the money, he would have allowed me to try some of those technologies out. I hope people will find this review helpful. It's normal for people to post less than desirable experiences. But I felt it was important to let people know of all of my family's positive experiences We've had with both Dr Clatanoff and Dr Planitz. Thank you and your staff. I'd rate this place lower if possible. I went in for a routine comprehensive eye exam with vision insurance which would cover the entire visit minus a $10 copay. This place decided they would bill my medical insurance instead of my eye insurance, costing me extra over $161 more. Their billing practices and costs of services were deceptive and not disclosed up front, although they claimed they had explained this before hand, which was a lie. They did not medically diagnose, provide treatment or forward my medical record as requested to my primary physician as requested. Dont go here... I've worn glasses all my adult life and have never been treated so poorly or deceptively by any other provider. They did not provide any service beyond what is covered by my vision insurance. read more

vision source's priority is money. They won't conduct an eye exam without both your eye care insurance and medical insurance. If they confirm a medial diagnosis for cataracts or diabetes, they will bill your medical insurance as well without taking any action involved with the cataracts or diabetes. Money first! read more

I had a horrible experience with this business in February'25. The office manager was also extremely unprofessional and rude. I posted poor reviews and the owner responded, wanting me to email their info line. I did and received no response. I thought I would try one more time and I made an appointment for this week. They will not honor it. They didn't even try to resolve anything and only gave lip-service in public forums. I'm extremely disappointed in this business. It used to have high integrity, great customer service, and a great amount of empathy for the customer. Sadly, they only care about the money they can get and nothing else. If you have medical insurance and you have a retina provider somewhere else do not go here for eye exam. They will declare they did a full medical workup and bill your medical insurance and your vision insurance. Since we have vision insurance, we do not have medical insurance covering what they bill. I have numerously asked them to bill what was done and it was the same exact eye exam as the rest of my family. Except they saw I had a vision issue I was born with, so they took it up on themselves to bill differently to get the $$$. My insurance did not cover it so I had to pay out of pocket. This was the first time a vision place billed me. I was stuck paying over 85.00 to get them off my back. I took my entire family elsewhere. I pleaded with them to only do an eye exam next time they said too bad this is how we bill and we will do it our way. I explained no other place has ever been the way. It is unfortunate it was about the money for them at that time, so I took my family of 7 soon to be 9 elsewhere. read more

So this was my first time here and kind of feel after leaving like I visited a used car dealership. Don't get me wrong the staff seem to be very friendly and try to address your needs. You may be put in the waiting room for about 20 minutes but that is not to bad of a wait. Why is say used car dealership is what happens at the end. They get your prescription then try to get you to purchase glasses from them. Then they charge you $200 for a contact exam, that is a lot of money when you really get nothing out of it. You get temporary contacts then they look and measure and say oh yeah they fit, I will order you boxes. I asked how much are your boxes, $80 each. Wow. I can go to Sams or Costco for half the price. Then they say yeah come back again, I would assume they will charge for that visit too. Beware of the technique. read more

Great customer service from beginning to end. We made our appointment on line, came in and the tech/specialist (assuming that was her title) did all of the tests and the paperwork. A few moments later the Doc came in with her buddy (her service dog). He was a great sight to see (I'm a dog lover). Appointment was great, sent out front to get my contacts ordered. There was a delay in my contacts arriving, but they hooked me up with some trial contacts to hold me over. They were not pushy, and were not trying to upsale me with products. I get eye exams covered for $10 with my insurance but every time I come here I have to pay $50+. It's just a little sad to see all the things they tack onto your exam without actually telling you until it's time to pay. I also didn't like how pushy the doctor was with whatever supplements she's selling. If I wanted to buy supplements I'd have asked. It was a big waste of time hearing this speech about it. My infant son and husband were waiting in the car for me to get a quick exam and it was not quick. I'll never come back. I don't believe in doctors offices not being upfront verbally about what exactly I'm going to have to pay for. Had I known, I wouldn't have gone. Don't even ask for a copy of your script. They gave me the hardest time when I told them I didn't want to select glasses and just wanted my RX. Like, you're charging me $50 for something that should have been $10. just print it and let me be on my way. I paid for services rendered. I should not be pushed into buying frames and lenses onto of random supplements. Like I said, my infant son was in the car. I just wanted an exam. Sara is the reason behind any stars. She was awesome in helping me pick out my frames. However, billing in this office is shady. When I made my appointment and waited 2 months I indicated I had vision insurance that covered everything. I was told they had to bill Blue Cross Blue Shield first then my vision as secondary. I asked them to do the reverse. Well they did not so instead of paying my $15 copay I am paying $400. When I called the office I was told that is the billing practice of this office. Another optometrist advised if I don't want want, don't feel like, or it isn't covered they won't force it, they further advised the alternative that is covered is effective enough. They also advised there was not any upfront fee and this was not stated as a copay by this company this was stated to be a new customer thing, furthermore as I understand with my referral to an in network provider I have no copay. read more

I am out $800 for a pair of glasses from Vision Source Rio I cannot see with, even after the lenses were remade. Granted, I have a difficult prescription but I went to a different provider and they were able to get my glasses right on the first try. Evidently Vision Source Rio's slogan "life is too short for bad vision" is just that -- a slogan. read more

Do not go there ! I was told after staff saw and recorded my insurance ID's that I had coverage I did not. Based on what I was told by Optician about that coverage, I bought a 2nd pair of glasses. Turns out; not covered. I just received a bill for $169. I trusted them. Won't make that mistake again and am now familiar with all of my medical coverage. Also, Optician was Not forthcoming about cost of coatings, etc. When asked when I would get glasses he wasn't sure; a couple of weeks. I will not return. I haven't been to an eye doctor in 10 years thanks to getting Lasik, but with the pandemic and increase in computer screen time, growing older, and pregnancy, my vision has unfortunately changed. I selected this place as it is close to my parents so they could watch my son while I got an eye exam. Upon entering my temp was taken and I was directed to wash my hands! (Yay COVID practices!) Then I used their fancy eye machine to test my eyes and was taken back to the exam room. The doctor was great as was the assistant that I worked with. I asked about updating my lasik but the doctor recommended against it since it would make my nearsightedness worse causing the need for reading glasses or potentially bifocals in the future. I took her advice and got a pair of glasses. I spent a little extra money for a pair I liked better and tinting. I can't decide if I'm a fan of the tinting or now, but they were quick turnaround time/ read more

I got my eye exam elsewhere, but I was having a hard time getting a call back from one of their techs to order glasses, so I stopped in Vision Source Rio. Jannett spent a lot of time with me and went over every option in detail so I could make an informed decision- I will be wearing the glasses all the time, so it was really important to me to get it right. I have every confidence that the glasses will be exactly what I need based on her assistance. Oakely had raised the price of the frames I chose since the original quote. Janett took it upon herself to speak to Sarah Graves-Brown to see if they could honor the original quote. Sarah made it happen. I didn't even know of the discrepancy until after the fact which makes me feel like they really care about the best interests of their clients. Find another optometrist. I made an appointment two months ago. I went in for the appt today and THE OFFICE cancelled my appointment because the doctor wasn't in today. I was told that they tried to call me which they did not. The numbers they gave me were very old but somehow the patient form I filled out and the email confirmation I received had my correct phone number. Waste of my time!! And the girl said they could fit me in Monday which doesn't work for me but I guess it does for them so then I would have to wait until November. No thank you. Long but detailed post about my experience here. Wonderfully nice staff but awfully disorganized. I'm serious, these guys are all very kind to you. But I hated my experience. I came here June 8th for a vision exam and new glasses. I ended up also getting a pair of sunglasses. For my normal glasses I got the transitions, Eyezen, polycarbonate, so I went all out because my vision is important to me. I loved both sets when I finally got them 6/20. The sunglasses I got polarized, but the tint was not dark enough. They offered to send them back and have them redone, I said it's fine, I'm going away for a vacation. I can't wait any longer. So I went on vacation, it was fine, they still worked. I was able to see as well with the normal pair. I come back from vacation and go to work. I noticed that my vision felt weird. Like there was magnification on the lower half of them. I tried getting used to them but I couldn't. I had headaches, felt sick, and had to walk away from my desk frequently. I process data for 10 hours a day, this was unbearable. I called Rio Eyecare/Vision Source and explained the situation. I come back in at their request, and they told me it is the Eyezen (blue light filter). They said they added a +1 magnification to the lenses. At no point was I ever told they would do that. If I had know it's common to do that, I would have requested them not to do this and none of this shit would have happened. So I said I can't get used to it, it's been 2 weeks now. I want it removed. So they agree, they order the new lenses and I still have to use the original pair. Another few weeks go by and they're here. I go back and they go to replace my lenses. They're wrong again, they didn't cut them to fit my frames. At this point I'm devastated, I have been dealing with headaches, eye pains, and just hated the whole thing. So the lady told me she'd order them again and assured me, they'd be in THE NEXT 2 DAYS. I explained I am tired of waiting, my eyes hurt so bad. She was kind enough to find a plain pair of lenses to fit my frame that were my prescription for the meantime. So I took those and the pain was gone. I waited another 2 weeks, no call. So I kept calling and leaving voicemails, no one returned my calls. So I came in today, JULY 31ST and asked what is going on. Sarah sits with me and tells me their UPS driver didn't deliver the package today and the lenses were just barely ordered yesterday!!!! I was so upset, they assured me they were ordered way before. So she left to go call ups to get the tracking number and find out where they are. Instead, another woman came back (Sarah had to take a lunch). I think her name is Heather? She said she was a manager and felt bad about my situation. So now I'm even more upset, I don't like dealing with one person and then have another come to talk to me. And she again apologized for the situation, I said I can't wait anymore. She did offer to ship my glasses to me but I'd have to pay to ship my current pair to her At this point I was already stressed out. I'm done wasting my hard earned money, time, headaches, and gas over this stuff so I said no I can't. I am moving out of the state tomorrow. I thought I was doing well by coming to this place 2 fucking months ago and getting my vision stuff done BEFORE I moved out of the state. But due to incompetence, I am left with no glasses now. I told Heather I'm done, I can't keep driving 40 minutes here for this. So I requested my money back, I gave her back the two pairs of glasses I bought. She gave me a refund back minus the eye exam and Optomap costs and did not provide me with any empathy after I requested the refund. She completely shut down on me, I think she was also frustrated and maybe a little embarrassed about the whole situation. I spent a total of $513.79 and that's AFTER INSURANCE COVERING A HUGE MAJORITY OF THE COSTS. I am now about to drive back home WITH NO GLASSES and hoping I am fine and hoping I can find my old pair at home. This was an awful experience, I do not recommend this place to anyone. read more

I was very pleased on my initial visit with this company, However, after that, every issue I have had since that visit has been an awful customer service experience. My first issue I need contacts soon for a trip and the doctor was not in, understandable, when I begin to express how I "feel" I was told by the technician how I should "feel" from there perspective. She never recovered from this and never once said "I'm sorry you feel like this" Next my little girl needed glasses and they got them ordered, after receiving them and she scratched the glass. My wife called concerned with any care tips they could offer for a five year old girl, there response "If she doesn't wear them she'll get an eye disease." I would keep my money and find a business who values your business and treats your right. read more

This local gem has been helping my eyes stay tip top for years now, the doctors and staff are all professional and a pleasure to work with, Sarah has been specially helpful and professional when it comes to choosing the right eyeglasses for me after my exam. They have the latest and greatest in eye exam technology, and the eyeglass/sunglass selection and pricing has something for everyone and is second to none. A newish feature is their esthetics including laser hair removal, tattoo removal, and many skin care treatments and creams for any and all skin types. Their laser is also the latest and greatest in technological advances. Buying new eyeglasses can be a pricey experience depending on your personal choices but the staff are very good about making you aware of the best choices for you based on your insurance coverage and/or out of pocket budget. They also still have a mandatory mask policy which is nice, and limit the amount of people in the building at one time which is very comforting to know some people still care and take the pandemic seriously. I highly recommend Sarah and Vision Source Rio if you're looking for a primary eye doctor, need to update your prescription, or even if you are just looking for the latest fashion accessory to go with your mask, they have it all at Vision Source Rio. read more

We are very disappointed in this place. My husband's frames broke within the first couple of weeks. They are only used for reading. We stopped by a couple of months later asking about the warranty on the frames wanting to get them replaced. The lady looked it up and said they were not covered. Apparently there isn't any kind of manufactures warranty. Which we find very odd. Other places have always honored a manufacturer warranty for the first year. We didn't purchase a warranty so she was happy to help us find another pair that we could give them more money for. They are really good at up selling. We feel like they are in it for the money and not wanting to help us. They have all sorts of schemes in the attempt to get as much money from you as possible. Very disappointed in them. We will not be returning and warn you to be careful to only get what you need and not get sucked into spending more money than you need to. read more
