When my family arrived, we were brought to my dad's room where he was sharing with another individual. The bedding was stained. In the bathroom that was shared with multiple individuals was unsanitary. It had brown-stained towels wrapped around the base of the toilet and smelled strongly of urine. My father was also told that he needed to relinquish his electric wheelchair and would be given one of theirs. He's informed they would "try" to find one with neck support, but could not promise one would be available. He absolutely must have neck support at all times and a standard wheelchair would not have been able to provide him the support he needed. He also does not have the strength or mobile to be able to push himself in case of an emergency. If something were to happen he would have been trapped. He was there from around 3pm to 8am the next day and at no point did any staff come to the room to check on him and see if his needs were being met. The only staff interaction happened in the middle of the night when he called to have his roommate turn off his TV and was told his roommate could watch TV at full volume all night if he wanted to, which he did ensuring he got no sleep that night. I came the next morning to remove him from the situation. Upon check out they lost some of his multiple RX medications that were later found and had to be mailed back to him. Essential RX medications should never have been lost in the first place which only added to the stress of the experience. This sad facility overall was not a place we believe any veteran should be subjected to.

Even before I arrived, as I waited in the hospital, the center showed issues by not returning phone calls made by my case manager. Four days elapsed before they responded. Don't believe the false promises made on their website, such as "Prior to admission, one of our admissions staff will reach out with a phone call to give you a brief explanation of what will happen upon arrival. They will also set up a time to have an initial meeting." Neither that call nor that meeting ever occurred. I gave it a week. The staff that I met and who took actual care of me were industrious and gracious, despite being overworked and (probably) underpaid. However, the services that I expected, such as extensive PT to improve my physical strength and flexibility, and the promised OT sessions, including learning how to get in and out of a car and learning how to use a tub bench, never happened. The meals were occasionally meager (one slice of plain bread and half an egg), sometimes tasty, and never included fresh fruit or vegetables. Part of recovering from anything should involve healthy nutrition that is based on fresh food. But I'm sure the industrial-sized cans of whatever are significantly cheaper. The incessant beeping of unanswered calls and the screaming/yelling of a woman parked in the hallway most days made for a disturbing and challenging environment in which to try and rest and heal. Without notifying me or asking my permission, the staff changed the days, times, and locations of scheduled doctor appointments. Imagine my surprise when I decided to double-check the status of appointments. Early on, I slipped in a puddle at the base of the toilet shared by two rooms (4 patients). My right foot (non-weight-bearing foot in a splint) slammed down on floor and my back slammed into a grab bar. Staff said that the puddle/leak had been previously reported to maintenance. Maintenance stated that the toilet was fine. Every day for the remainder of my stay, the floor was wet and a towel was required to mop it up. When I informed PT that I was having chronic back spasms and pain after the fall in the bathroom, the staff said that they would provide some sort of back support. I asked about the back support again the next day. The back support was never provided. The understaffing presents definite challenges for both patients and staff. When you are non-weight-bearing and you rely on staff to obtain medication or use the bathroom, you must be prepared to request medication several times, because they will forget and you will suffer. To avoid developing a UTI and being forced to foul my clothing, I learned early on to request access to the bathroom before I seriously needed it. It might easily be 30 minutes before anyone's available to assist you in getting to the toilet. The requirements that they were supposed to fulfill, such as ordering a walker and restarting my in-home PT and OT, failed to materialize. I made several visits to their office before I discharged myself to make sure that they had placed orders. I don't know if they were lying to get rid of me or just because it's standard behavior. After I discharged myself, I expected the walker to arrive at my home and the home-health care to resume. For the next 10 days, I called repeatedly to ask what the status was. No one responded. My case manager from my insurance company also called, and they failed to respond to those calls as well.

All four of us visited and toured several facilities both in Northern and Southern CA. We wanted to find a place for dad that we felt comfortable live in ourselves. Dad had been living in Northern CA for most of his life, so when my husband and I visited Cloisters (several times), and had met with Tia and other staff members, we felt that it would be the best fit for him, it was still a big leap of faith as it was major move for dad at such an advanced age. Now it has been 3+months and dad has fully adjusted to the facility, met new friends and very much enjoying his new home. Always greeting you with warm smile, Tia is the driving force that keeps everything going the right direction, but each and every person that we have had the pleasure of meeting so far have been caring, attentive and a joy to know. We usually visit dad twice a day every day, so we don't miss much. We would like to specially recognize Marlene who has been exceptionally careful when she is showering dad who had a foot surgery recently. Just last week we celebrated dad's 98th birthday with a cake for everyone at Cloisters. My favorite aspect of the facility is that every room has a view, and most rooms have a private patio access to an immaculately maintain garden brimming with roses, cannas, bougainvillea, many shady trees, hummingbirds and butterflies and many pollinators flitting about, that would cheer up the gloomiest of moods. I don't know where to start with my praise for Mission Hospice!…read more I knew about hospice but I thought it was reserved for those who are in the actively dying stage. Boy, was I wrong! If you take anything away from this review, please know that hospice can and should start early so that your loved one is comfortable...not just for the days before their death but for weeks or months. Anyway, my Dad had dementia and was living in a memory care facility. They didn't recommend hospice until Dad was in the actively dying stage (we didn't realize). They referred us to Mission Hospice on a Saturday and Dad passed away on Thursday. From the moment Zachary arrived to do the assessment, until my Dad passed away, our experience with Mission was everything we could have wanted during this stressful time. Within 1 hour of Zachary's assessment, Dad was set up with a hospital bed, oxygen, pain medications, etc. Zachary was very patient and thorough, asking questions and allowing us to share our experience even if it was too much information! We received a visit from the Social Worker, Susan, and I must say that she was a blessing. She really cared about my Dad, my family and our experience. She allowed us to laugh, cry and share our fears and regrets. I felt safe to really express my sorrow and cry for the first time since this final stage began. Next came Pastor Don....he arrived in our life at the perfect moment. In the midst of guilt and remorse he helped me see things from a different perspective. Could we have done things differently with Dad's care? Perhaps. But did we do the absolute best we could with what we knew? Absolutely! We received daily visits from RN's, all of which were concerned, caring and took the time to answer all our questions. As for expenses, Mission handled all the paperwork with Medicare so we didn't have to do anything. If you are thinking about hospice but you're not sure if it's the right time, call Mission to talk it through. Don't rely on the hospital or the doctor or the care staff to bring it up...be proactive. I wish we had started sooner. Thank you Mission, for helping my Dad have a peaceful passing!
