My 83 year old parents were unable to keep up with the care needed for my daily life. The symptoms became worse- incontinence, inability to perform ADLs, and unable to feed me or keep me clean. It was time to get serious help. I was falling 4/5 times a week and calling the fire department to pick me up off the floor. After serious research working with social workers, we discovered Autumn Lake.Spa Creek, 10 minutes from my family. The setting was beautiful, and I was instantly attracted to the place. I immediately contacted my social workers to find out how to become a lifetime resident. Come to find out that after providing this place with appropriate documentation and filling out forms needed, they evaluated me for residency. After some days waiting (not long) during hospitalization, I was accepted! I was transported to Autumn Lake via ambulance and immediately shown to my room. I was welcomed with OPEN ARMS! Every single staff member i met greeted me and offered their help whenever I might need it. All residents said hello with smiles. My room is spacious and most of all, SAFE...for me with an electric wheelchair. I met my sweet roommate, perfectly matched for me. Most of all, I got to meet Alish, one of the social workers instrumental in my acceptance. Gave her my thanks! Signed a lot of complicated paperwork, but Zi in the business office made everything clear...she explained it all. Then I met Rebecca (Unit Manager) who told me how the unit I was living in works and really presented everything clearly. If I need help, she was quick to say she's always available. Then I met Jalloh, the nurse that I could contact for room/floor related issues, and of course any medical questions that I had. He was personally responsible for my direct care. I quickly came to find that he is a special soul, Jalloh. You constantly hear his name called out loudly throughout the halls, and he always answers loudly and comes to your room immediately. I've NEVER EVER seen a person being CONSTANTLY PULLED IN DIFFERENT DIRECTIONS consistently respond with bright and knowledgeable care every time. WITH JOKES AND LIGHTHEARTED words that always LIFTS YOUR SPIRITS. Wow. He is AMAZING. And he manages the aides that work under him with confidence and brilliance that inspire his leadership. Cherlita is my favorite person on my care team. I get to be taken care of by her at least 3 times a week and she. Is truly a standout performer. I need lots of very personal care and she always goes the extra mile! It's INCREDIBLE how CLEAN she makes me feel...she handles many, many patients at one time - a typical night includes 19 patients , with call lights going on constantly for other rooms needing assistance urgently. I don't know how she does it. Her bedside manner is incredible, maintaining speed with excellence...and with a smile! Next, I'll tell you about the Therapy Department. I began therapy right away upon arrival. I met Ashley, Katie, Cesar, Harry, and Frank right away and they wasted no time in creating a therapy plan for me, and discussing my goals. A progress report was created. I want to stand. That is my goal. They are helping me realize that goal with carefully planned exercises. Working very closely with Katie, I'm working on foot and leg strength. Very difficult with loss of movement, but she is finding a way to somehow do it through hands on therapy, and strength building exercises. Ashley, Cesar and Frank are all working with me on upper body strengthening exercises and I've been able to enjoy visible results already. Autumn Lake is a clean, comfortable and very safe refuge for those that require rehabilitation and those who need a long term forever home. I was SO lucky to get admitted here. This place is the worst. Don't put your loved one there. Our parents were at Charter for a little…read moreunder a year in assisted living and there were numerous problems with poor management and unprofessional staff. The call buttons rarely worked, and when they did function, nobody came for 45 minutes. The nursing staff didn't make necessary medical appointments, housekeeping was mediocre, basic maintenance requests were ignored, memory care residents were left alone with few activities (our mother was in memory care several hours per day for a few weeks), and our parents were regularly shouted at by the cleaning person in retaliation for a family member complaining to the director about how filthy the room was. We gave the facility a year to try to improve, but in retrospect we should have moved them out within the first month. Only the meal delivery staff and the physical therapy staff (an independent company) were kind and compassionate. Ditto for the receptionist with the little dog. The head of wellbeing/nursing has a negative attitude and shows no compassion toward residents or family members. She appears to hate her job. The executive director is checked out and rarely on the premises. When she learned our parents were moving out and why, she offered zero apology for the many ways her facility was in breach of contract. Save yourself a lot of stress and find a better place.

The facility is old and it shows but because my mother was completely unable to care for herself I was most concerned with her treatment from the staff. What I found (at least on her wing of the building) was a staff who kept her clean and comfortable and treated her with respect. There were a few things that needed my attention and I knew I needed to be there everyday for at least a while to keep an eye out. As I sat vigil in my dying mother's room I got compassionate concern, hugs, and even prayers from the women and men who tended to her. Her pain meds were always delivered on time. Before we put her here I saw the other reviews and was very scared for her but there was one positive review that I focused on that eased my mind. I called several home care providers who told me it would take as many as five days to find care givers. I needed someone to drive me home and begin care the next day. We Care could provide what I needed. They helped me complete the necessary forms, line by line. I was extremley anxious about being home. Diane and Sonia were able to support and encourage me through my anxious moments. They provided both physical and emotional support as I adjusted to being home. In addition, all my laundry was done, my bed changed, dishes washed, and my meals were prepared. They both went "above and beyond". I valued their companionship as I adjusted to being on my own. They became like surrogate family members, and I appreciate their caring and kindness above all.
