I usually climb in the east bay (pacific pipe anyone?) but was home for thanksgiving so I decided to get day passes and climb here twice. Awesome little spot, not super big but plenty of fun problems and the staff was super nice! I loved the door problem!

Came here on a Sunday afternoon with the best friend. It was our first time here, so we had a little difficulty locating the place, but once we found it, we were ready to get our climb on! We were greeted immediately by the one man staff it looked like. He was very informative. He handed us some forms to fill out and from there, it's $10.00 to climb! Shoe rentals are $2.00 if you want them. He explained the routes and how it works after we were set to go. There were a handful of children climbing but besides that it wasn't crowded, we could sit around and watch other climbers. It was a fun time! Definitely a good workout. The atmosphere is really cool. With a living room like upstairs area, and a nice big couch downstairs. I think membership is $45.00/month with 24/7 access. I don't do this enough for one, but it's pretty cool.

Doing out of the hallway, I made it this far. They changed it the next time I went.

Small, intimate and so pretty. Also only $12 compared to the average $16-$20 at other gyms. Love the atmosphere here.

Carlsbad kickboxing club is an amazing combat gym in a great location in Carlsbad near the beach…read moreand downtown area. Pros: I have been at this gym for over 3 years and the things that keep me here are the coaches and the consistent people who train here. The coaches are very knowledgeable and experienced in boxing and Muay Thai and spend time to really help any one of all levels. If you're new or experienced, you will be able to get a great workout and practice in, building your skills whether you plan to compete in the ring or learn for self defense. They have a great weight room here that has everything you need to get a great lift in. Free weights range up to 100lb dumbbells and plenty of bars for squats, bench, deadlifts and stationary cardio treadmills and bikes. They have 3 bathrooms as well as a sauna for higher paying members. The staff behind the desk are also very helpful and friendly! Cons: Since I started here at the gym, prices were very reasonable ranging from $120 - $160 depending on if you do a year contract ($120 ish), 6 month contract ($140 ish), or month to month ($160ish). Note that prices may have changed since I've started but if you obviously plan to stay, definitely do the year contract to get the best bang for your buck and plan to come in at least 3 times a week to get your moneys worth. They offer private lessons too but can range from $90-$100 a session depending on if you buy a single session or a bundle. They are amazing ways to learn even more than you would in class but aren't always for everyone. Verdict: This gym is a great boxing and Muay Thai gym with plenty of options for beginners to experienced fighters. Go here if you live nearby!

Carlsbad Village Athletic Club hosts Sunday morning yoga every week near the volleyball nets on Frazee Beach. Their waving yoga banners are easy to spot from the sea wall. The instructor is very lovely. She led the small class of five through a blend of opening poses & set a peaceful vibe, complete with some gentle assists & eucalyptus oil therapy. CVAC's rates recently increased from $10 to $15 a class, which is steep for a one hour outdoor session. $15 is on par with indoor studios that provide other amenities & equipment. With the nature of the soft sloping sand at Frazee, I personally found it too easy to dump all my weight into my wrists in inverted poses. Unless the class moves down to the more solidly packed sand, Frazee is better suited for meditation, seated, or standing poses. Beach yoga is a win either way, and CVAC's class is definitely worth checking out on a snoozy Sunday morning.

The yoga teachers have their own style, rhythm vibe and teachings which I love for the variety. They offer classes on Saturday & Sunday mornings and between the months April to September they offer Sunset classes which are breathtaking! I have asthma so I find doing the classes outside provides open-air versus inside where the air can be a bit stuffy at times causing it hard to breathe and making it unpleasant. Yoga should be relaxing allowing you to be present and aware of oneself in the moment. The stimulation we received from our senses in this outdoor environment make the whole experience different.......Like the feeling of sand beneath our feet or hearing the waves crash against the shore and let's not forget natural absorption of vitamin D from the Sun! Yes, at times it can be challenging because the ground is unstable but know your body and know your limits. I personally like it because it challenges me to work on my core more. All the teachers are certified and can help you with any modifications. I highly recommend CVAC Beach Yoga. You just might see dolphins or whales and that my friend you will not find in a studio!

We started off aligning on goals for BMI, strength, physique, nutrition (which I reached ahead of my wedding date thanks to Andrea!). As we progressed Andrea tweaked the sessions accordingly, which kept workouts interesting and at the right level of difficulty. Andrea taught us tons about long-term health, nutrition and fitness that I am using in my day-to-day. Turning these habits into a new lifestyle has been the best takeaway from this experience. I came to her after doing a short stint in CrossFit, where I was struggling with hip pain and unable to keep up with the high volume of squats. My goal was to focus on strength training and building muscle. From day one, Andrea really listened and tailored our sessions to focus on building strength and muscle without aggravating my hip. Andrea is incredibly attentive to form, always making sure I'm moving safely and effectively which is a huge priority for me. I continue to progress in building up my strength and I feel stronger and more confident in my body than I have in years--I've lost body fat, gained muscle, and feel like I'm truly training with intention now.
