I've been going to gyms for roughly 68 years (when I was 8 years old I would go with my dad to the LA, downtown YMCA). Over the years, I've been to numerous gyms. This one is by far the best. It's well maintained and VERY clean; both out on the floor and in the locker room. The other members are well educated, friendly, and courteous when lifting weights/doing cardio's. Rarely do you hear grunts, groans and dropping weights. This gym is very nice. That's about it. It's a shame that north coastal San Diego gets the short end of the stick on premium gyms. I was a longtime member at FIT (~ 10 years), I was a member at La Jolla Lifetime, Broadway Athletic club, among others. It's $245 per month and doesn't at least have a wet/dry sauna combo. It only has a wet sauna. Maybe I'm being spoiled, but no dry sauna, no outdoor area, no cold plunge, no pool/hot tub... plus the showers are absolutely tiny. I'm only 5'8" and I feel like I'm back in the Navy with these tiny showers. The weight area is also very small. My point is, I feel like this is the lowest of all the premium gyms in San Diego. If a FIT or a LIFETIME opened in La Costa I would likely switch instantly. read more

This is a very tiny gym. The strength training area is extremely small. It offers no pool or sauna. We went for a few years during Covid because they at least tried to keep stuff clean, but quickly stopped afterwards. The inflated price seems to create extremely entitled, mostly older gym-goers, that hoard 4-5 sets of freeweights at a time, and then hold loud 45-minute work calls while monopolizing a cable tower and glaring at anyone who comes close. If you want your routine to take 2 hours to do half as much actual lifting, spend 20 minutes trying to park, and still cost literally 10x as other gyms, then go for it. And hey, at least the locker rooms are clean. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Just never try to cancel. They will call, text, email, and otherwise harass you to re-join every 2-3 months for the rest of your life. It's a slightly small but typical sized Equinox. Took a couple yoga classes and used the main weight space. Decent crowd but not crowded. The instructors for yoga were typical high Equinox quality. It's really cool to see the consistency across this brand. People knock Equinox and I hate the price. But they offer a consistent and premium product. Extremely disappointed with this Equinox location, especially given the $250/month price point. Unlike many other Equinox gyms, this location offers no sauna, no pool, and no cold plunge, yet continues to increase membership rates without adding value. Staff professionalism is a major issue. Much of the staff appears extremely young and lacks the maturity, experience, and customer-service skills expected at a premium gym. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The overall attitude often feels dismissive and unwelcoming rather than professional and service-oriented.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I have trained at far more affordable gyms--both in the U.S. and internationally--where members are greeted with warmth, respect, and genuine enthusiasm. Unfortunately, that is not the case here. I have traveled extensively across the United States and around the world, and this is by far one of the least welcoming gym environments I've experienced. Several strong trainers and managers have already left, and the decline in culture and leadership is noticeable. Equipment quality is also lacking, with resistance bands and straps frequently breaking and not being replaced promptly. The most serious concern occurred today: a staff member recorded me on video without my consent. This is deeply troubling and a clear violation of personal privacy. I was under the understanding that recording members is strictly prohibited at Equinox. It is difficult to understand how this location justifies premium pricing while service standards, professionalism, and overall member experience continue to decline. I had a membership here for some time a couple of years ago and it was an amazing experience. The location, the machines, the support, the classes - all of it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]They'd already won me over while I was a member but ironically, they really sealed the deal for me when I left.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I moved out of state, went in person to sadly cancel my membership but there was a big billing mistake. Nice building, I think. I only got as far as the front desk because unlike every other gym in the world, you can't get a day pass at this Equinox. "We haven't in, like, two years," said the front desk person whose purpose in life escapes me still. "How much is a membership then?" "I don't know, but I can call someone!" It's a ploy to bring in the salesperson![[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]The idea of a timeshare-like pitch for a gym I want to use a couple times because I'm traveling this week really seemed only slightly less appealing than going to a used car dealer while simultaneously getting a cavity filled and an ingrown toenail removed without anesthesia.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] I'd pay more to use a self-service kiosk to take my money and commit me to a 69-year contract with what I'm certain is an obnoxious "initiation" fee just to avoid an annoying salesperson. Sweet mother of mercy. It was a hair past 8am on a Saturday and, still devoid of my morning workout (but with a solid pump of irritation working for me), I went 5 minutes down the street to LA Fitness (in decidedly a less-than-bougie strip mall without any G-Wagons), got a day pass, and the front desk guy even comped it after telling this story. It made him laugh as I'm sure the Equinox person reading this is, too, even if you can't admit it. (Blink twice if you're laughing, Equinox person!) I'm sure Equinox has delightful mint-crusted kombucha-soaked conflict-free vegan hand towels with lavender-coated seaweed wraps in the sauna, but I really just wanted a good workout and was even prepared to hand over a hundred bucks for the privilege of using (what other reviews suggest is) very nice equipment in a tiny location in the world's most bougie strip mall. Turns out LA Fitness has none of the pretentiousness, all the access, and most likely less spandex (no offense if that's your thing). Of course, your mileage may vary, but definitely bring your G-Wagon if you don't want to get judged in the Equinox parking lot. Maybe they'll then even grant you a day pass. read more

Digging this Equinox. Located in an upscale plaza with plenty of dining options if you're looking for a post-workout meal. There's ample parking, and for Tesla owners, an abundance of Tesla superchargers conveniently located on the main and upper level. The gym itself is clean and a solid size with plenty of equipment. I liked that it wasn't crowded both times I'd visited during peak hours on weeknights. What I really enjoyed is the gorgeous scenic view of the forest backdrop showered behind the large glass panes, which sets a zen-like atmosphere. Downside is it's pretty bare on amenities. There's no pool, jacuzzi, etc. However it does the job, and I had a relaxing time. read more

I signed up for this gym while house shopping, and specifically asked the sales rep prior to signing up if I moved and was no longer close to the gym, if I could cancel penalty free. He said yes. A few months later, I moved and contacted him to cancel. He said he would have the manager contact me to finalize. After a week with no contact, I followed up and he said he could help me so I emailed him my proof of relocation. No response. I followed up via text and email, still no response. They then charged my card again for a new month which I requested him to refund and received no reply. I still have not received any correspondence back despite multiple efforts to contact. They did an unauthorized charge on my card that I am currently disputing with my bank. This is one of those places that are persistent to get your business but once you're signed up, they don't care about you and you can't seem to reach anyone. Buyer beware! read more

I want to give this gym a higher rating, but it continually falls short (especially for the price). The facility is small and overcrowded, and management recently relocated all the equipment which makes one half of the gym incredibly busy and the other totally empty. The new layout makes no sense other than to crowd an already overpopulated gym. The property has a juice bar, retail, front lobby and spa - all which take up way more space than it should, limiting the workout area. Perhaps the most frustrating thing is they have a kids club which would be AMAZING for North County families, yet they have failed to open it after COVID, 4 years later. Other parents in the locker room repeatedly share their frustration over this, and many have left the gym because of it. At minimum, they could do weekends, but the space goes unused, yet it's "included" in our membership. Prices continue to go up year over year, yet the quality continues to decline. For example, locker room products shifted from Kiehls to a new brand that is very subpar. Management fails to even change out the bottles and the labels fade, so it's impossible to know if you're pumping shampoo, conditioner or body wash. Towels are rough and threads falling out. Very minimal ask for a "luxury gym." Yet prices continue to go up with no new features, or equipment added. [[HIGHLIGHT]]The only positive aspects of this gym are the classes and staff[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]], but it's clear management is cutting corners compared to other Equinox locations and especially other luxury gyms in San Diego like FiT. read more

I've been going to the La Costa Equinox for about ~4 months and I can't say enough great things about the staff, trainers, variety of classes and amenities. I was previously using ClassPass and it was starting to become the same cost as a membership to Equinox without the amenities and the unlimited classes hence, the switch. I will agree that the cost of membership is high for a gym but the quality and variety of classes, access to trainers, locker room w/ steam room, and equipment is worth it if you are someone who regularly uses ClassPass or goes to local studios for cycle, mat pilates or yoga and likes access to a gym. Also, I can't say enough great things about my personal trainer Gwen who I've been working with for the past 3 months. She is amazing at what she does and has made me feel so comfortable working out with weights and machines. If you are considering Equinox I highly encourage you to check it out! read more

"Kacy " was at front desk today chatting with friends and she didn't see me crossing the lobby while I was in a phone call. Than when I went inside the gym area. She asked a lady ( maybe a member of the gym ) to go after me and bring me to the front desk. I retuned and she said that she didn't see my "face". Than under her lack of professionalism I just show her my check in and move on, than she just said : sorry is for your security. What? If she said I need to see if your plan is active or anything related to a front desk duties I will agreed. Yes it's pricy, but it's the best gym in north county. It's always clean and has updated equipment compared to other gyms. I've been a long time equinox member at several locations and the Carlsbad location does not lack; however, I will say that the size of the facility is somewhat smaller than other locations, making it difficult during rush hours. The daytime is pleasant when it's less crowded. I've also noticed that parking can be a situation especially on Saturday mornings. I love the boutique adjacent to the check in desk with a variety of options for workout apparel. I've not tried the spa yet, but will leave an updated review. read more

I've been a member here for 4 years. i had an all club membership, and decided to go back to a single club membership. But instead of charging me the rate in line with 4 years of loyalty, they charged me the new member rate. To Amy in the Spa specifically - I received a hydra facial from her and I cannot speak highly enough about the experience and the results. She thoughtfully explains the process and what each phase of the facial does for your skin. I also really struggle with whiteheads and she was able to get them all out & the extractions were almost healed by the next day (which has never been the case for me after extractions). I'm so happy with the results - this is the most satisfied I've been with the results after a facial. Amy will continue to be my go to for facials from here on out. read more

I meant to review Equinox a few months ago when my wife and I joined and at that time it would have received 5 stars. Equinox is very easy to get a quick and efficient workout. The trainers are probably the best aspect of Equinox. My wife trains with Maggie and I train with Hannah, they are both excellent and challenge us to become stronger and healthier each season. The reason for losing a five star rating? For some reason, the management at Equinox totally changed the layout over the weekend and has totally changed the flow of workouts. It's now rather weirdly set up. Change things to make things better, not just to change. Otherwise..Equinox is an amazing place to workout. read more

Do not waste your money here. The gym is incredibly small and overcrowded. [[HIGHLIGHT]]There are typically 15-18 trainers on the floor at any given time, and many of them are extremely rude.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] Basic gym etiquette is to rotate through machines in order to give other members a chance to use them. The trainers do not abide by this whatsoever. They will take one machine with a client and use it for up to 45 minutes at a time without giving others a chance to use it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]One trainer in particular, Maggie Neuman, is notorious for this. She was using one of the only two cable machines with a client for 40 minutes straight. I politely asked to rotate in and she refused.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] [[HIGHLIGHT]]When I told her it is unfair to other members, she got extremely rude and told me to "go find somewhere else to workout."[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] She said she would not share and she wasn't even going to discuss it. Unfortunately, this is a daily occurrence at this gym. Equinox markets itself as a "high-end" gym but this location is anything but that. read more

Don't do it !!! When your interested in signing up they service is amazing. As soon as you give your credit card and sign up and get locked in a contract it all ends. I have sent 4 e-mails to the manager and have not heard back from 1 of them. They have some glitches In there app and it kicked me out of signing up for a class I asked the concierge about it she said she would send the manager a message to call me and fix it, I never heard from anyone, they literally don't give a &$&@ about you once you sign the contract. I also had never received a tour because I was out of town and signed up for a special rate To this day 7 months later no one wants to give me a tour they just point and tell me I'll find it..... It's unbelievable the customer service, I've been in the international hotel consulting world for over 20 years and I've never seen such poor customer service. read more

If I could give this gym one star I would. I've been working out for 30 years and have belonged to other Equinox clubs during that time. I'm stuck in a year membership here and I'd advise anyone to find another club. If you have to go to 24-hour fitness, do so, because sadly, that is going to be a far better work out experience than this particular Equinox location. This club is OVER CROWDED, and needs THREE times the amount of equipment for the amount of people that are working out here. I consistently have to wait for equipment, this includes machines and free weights. Forget trying to use a bench; they are all taken and if they aren't taken, they have multiple people waiting for one. The gyms workout area is TINY compared to other Equinox gyms that charge $215 per month. Half the gym is the lobby, an apparel store, their juice bar and a lounge area! These spaces could double the amount of equipment and work out areas. There is at least 1/2 dozen offices that line the inside of the gym that could also be utilized with equipment, but instead they sit empty. This location desperately needs upper management (corporate) to survey and address the fact that 1/2 the gym is underutilized and is wasted space. All the while members are squeezed into over sold, cramped space. How can a premium club offer such a poor work out experience? I will not renew my membership -which is possibly good for them- one less person waiting for equipment. read more

I have had a wonderful 4 month experience with Forrest Folen as my trainer. He is so very knowledgeable and encouraging. His wealth of experience in this field is incomparable. He has a superb grasp of anatomy, importance of mind-body connection, appropriate exercises for different age groups and how to avoid injury to body parts that are affected by an underlying condition. Hi, this might be the second review I've ever written, but I'm so annoyed! I wanted to share this with anyone interested. I joined the Equinox La Costa Spa in the beginning of the New Year's, used it maybe a dozen times, been injured. [[HIGHLIGHT]]I've been trying to cancel my membership for the last three weeks.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] First request. I showed my x-rays, cancellation rejected. Second request. I emailed my MRI diagnosis, stating in explicit terms that I had a dis-located bicep tendon and multiple rotator cuff tears. Cancellation rejected. [[HIGHLIGHT]]Third attempt; The concierge team at Equinox LaCosta Spa demanded a letter from my doctor to cancel my membership, but unfortunately, my orthopedic appointment was two months out.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] So I drove down to Pacific Beach, to the San Diego Spine and Sports Center (FABULOUS/Dr. Ken Anderson), to basically get a doctors note. Dr. Anderson said I had partial tears in my rotator cuff, requiring diligent and long rehabilitation, but I could possibly escape surgery. The doctor wenton, to explain that the dislocated bicep tendon would need surgery. He was kind enough to write me a letter. I submitted it for the fourth time to equinox, and their reply is that the doctor did not use the word "cancel" in his letter therefore, they could freeze my membership for me. But, if I wanted to the ask the doctor to rewrite his letter and include the word "cancel", I could resubmit again. Today, November 1st, I received an email from Equinox La Costa Spa, stating that if I pay my delinquent November dues of $215, I could do so, and they would then cancel my membership. My encounter with the front desk manager Andrea was unprofeessional and lack customer service. I reached out to the General Manager, Gary about my interaction with her and their policies. No accoubtable at all from either one. This company is in the service industry and my first encounter was below par. Accountable means apologize for how I was treated, not offer me a membership. Do you think I should pay for unprofessionlism and no customer service. If Corporate would like to discuss the circumstance, please feel free to reach out.
