There are televisions playing softly in the room with the bar but there's also a more intimate room; I think it'd be a nice place to gather with friends. I was told there'd be wine tasting nights starting soon! The bartender, Teylor, was exceptional! She put me right at ease, spoke knowledgeably about each cocktail and wine option, and had a good sense of humor. She worked efficiently among the patrons and was very attentive and polite. Shout-out to Teylor! The vibe was really great too - the other guests were friendly and sociable without being overbearing and I enjoyed my visit while having a drink. I ordered the Monte Sano Sunset, which is a rum drink with fruity elements to include orange and pineapple juice as well as a squeeze of lime. It wasn't overly sweet and didn't upset my stomach as similar drinks often do. Now given the name "Prohibition," I half expected someone to knock on the door and ask for a secret password like it was 1927. Back in those days, enjoying a drink required secrecy, dim lights, and maybe a jazz band playing in the corner. Today, things are a little easier... though for this non-drinker, my order was simple: water on the rocks, hold the lemon. I prefer my water about 100 proof for maximum flavor. My boss and coworker grabbed seats at the bar while we looked over the menu. We kicked things off with the Pork Belly Burnt Ends and the Pork Bao Buns. Let me tell you, those Pork Belly Burnt Ends were an absolute masterpiece. They came out crisp and seasoned just right with a little spicy kick. Served with raw carrots, homemade pickles, and lettuce wraps to bundle those little jewels together--downright tasty. If food had a Hall of Fame, these would already have a plaque on the wall. The Pork Bao Buns were good as well, but they simply couldn't match the grand slam the Pork Belly Burnt Ends delivered. For my main course, I ordered the Smoked Wangs with the Jala Mango seasoning and a side salad. The wings were delicious--cooked and seasoned to perfection. Every bite was solid. No bootlegging required. Prohibition definitely hit it out of the park today. Between the great food, the great service, and the fun atmosphere near the ballpark, this place is a must-stop for locals or anyone just passing through Madison. Our waitress tried pretty hard to convince us to order dessert, so I'm guessing their sweets are just as flavorful as everything else on the menu. The only problem I had today? I couldn't finish my meal. I was absolutely stuffed. If this had been the 1920s, the only crime committed here would've been leaving food on the plate. Great food. Great service. However, I can swear by the fact that this proves my theory on Mexican food, in North Alabama at least, being worshipped only if it tastes like cardboard and has no seasoning. This is not my first time at Phil's, either location, and every time it is always unremarkable. But this time, it was inexcusably bad. My fiancée's margarita tasted like water with lime in it. There was no triple sec or tequila taste, though she did say she felt a little buzz from it. So clearly was there but, to what cost? $9 for a tasteless marg is a little high. The queso had legitimately no flavor. Not even cheese. Just like table cream. It even had peppers in it but you could not taste them. This was the time where we questioned if we had caught COVID in the 10 minutes we had been in there and lost our sense of taste. I quickly learned this wasn't the case when I tasted the salsa which had the flavor of body odor and canned tomatoes. The chips, however, nice and crispy. So a plus there. Get the chips. Don't dip them. We split the chicken fajitas and the 3 minutes it took to come out after we ordered it, should be taken as a sign that it's not going to be great. The grill marks felt laughable as the chicken had no texture or flavor of something that was grilled. It, along with the peppers and onions, had a slimy texture and, again, absolutely no flavor. It seemed to me that this was a classic case of either Sysco's Finest or Sous Vide cooking. The rice on the side also had no flavor but the beans actually had a great taste, but a few felt under cooked and slightly crunchy. The stand out was the home made tortillas which we thick and fluffy. This made me question why, if you're going to the effort of making tortillas and chips in house, why cut corners on your MAIN part of the meal? As for the service, it wasn't bad but the waiter had to be asked multiple times for refills and was very inattentive to our table while favoring who seemed to be regulars behind us. Phil's has the essence of "what a Mexican restaurant tastes like in Norway if opened by a British person who had Mexican food once on a work trip to Idaho." Decor that's trying too hard, food that has no seasoning, and service that is lacking.
