Although the interior remodel (from when it was the previous Mexican restaurant), the new (to me) house made flour tortillas, and friendly, kind staff all warrant five stars, I was frustrated over their wine at this Phil Sandoval's. I recall the Huntsville location having an Estancia label Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. It was a nice wine! They had it on a drink menu. Here, I didn't see a drink menu and I asked the very kind server for Estancia Pinot Grigio or Chardonnay. She returned with a rose wine - yuck! I refused it and she took it away, asking me to write down what I wanted on her food order ticket, which I did. She returned with a white wine, and after one sip it tasted oxidized - another yuck! I walked it over to the bar and explained what I was trying to get and she showed me the bottle and it was a low end Robert Mondavi bottle of white wine (their "RM" label). When I realized that, I knew the wine was not oxidized, just low quality. I apologized and said I would take the glass back I had just brought her, but I think she had dumped it out. At any rate, I get it, Mexican restaurants are not widely known for their vast wine selections, and most people drink beer or margaritas. Robert Mondavi is not a bad label, but the bottle this Phil's carries is their low, low, end. Despite the wine snafu, the hubs and I enjoyed a birthday dinner for me with him enjoying their burrito (I think it was pork) and me trying to replicate my Sorority Sister's shrimp and chicken fajitas with the chicken fajita dinner. The chicken was tender and well seasoned meaning the fajitas were a win for me. The tortillas were fantastic, the service was good despite language barriers and wine quality issues, the restroom was spotless and we enjoyed a dinner out! Thanks, Phil's! read more

I have always liked eating at Phil's. Eat in/carry out. Doesn't matter. The food is always good. The experience as a whole has always been good. I'd never been to the Madison Phil's but why would I expect anything different? I wouldn't. I didn't. I should have. Everything was different. Our friends arrived before us. They finished the chips and salsa. Since nothing was refreshed, we never got to enjoy this staple. I ordered the daily drink special, a mango margarita. Salt or sugar? Sugar, of course. Except it came with salt. I ordered shrimp fajitas, no peppers, pico on a separate plate - I absolutely cannot tolerate even one tidbit of raw onion. (I know, I know, as hard as I try not to be, I'm one of "those"). My food arrived, big scoop of pico between the sour cream and guac, rendering half of each off limits. No peppers? The order must have said "extra" peppers. There was actually a half of a pepper on the griddle sitting on top of a bed of mixed peppers. I picked around the peppers, so disappointed in my meal. While the fresh tortillas did rock, the rest of the meal wasn't even worthy of the energy it took to eat it. If the food wasn't bad enough, our server was awful. We got our food but then she disappeared. She never came back to ask if we wanted something else. She never refilled drinks. She didn't even give us our checks. It took a few an attempts to get her attention so we could pay and head out. It's a little hard to fathom how sister restaurants, owned by the same people, run by the same people, could be such complete opposites. There's no way that I'm giving up on Phil's. I met a friend at Phil Sandoval's for lunch. The restaurant wasn't very crowded which was nice. It was cold outside and the temp inside was warm enough. As soon as we were seated, a worker stopped by with thin crispy tortilla chips and 2 salsas. Yum! Their tortilla chips are the best!!! We both ordered the same lunch item which was the taco salad with spicy beef. I normally order the chicken but opted for something different this time. My salad arrived and was quite beautifully decorated. I failed to take a picture of it when it arrived too! The beef was seasoned well, marinated onions were excellent, avocado beautifully green, and overall the taste and presentation was 5/5. I have eaten here several times and always enjoy their foods. If you like Tex Mex foods, please stop by and give this place a try. It's good y'all. read more

Such a special restaurant in Madison!! For Mother's Day, my family and I tried Phil Sandoval's and immediately fell in love with it! Not only were the servers super friendly and made all the mom's in our group feel extra special, the food was so so delicious!! I got the beef burrito platter and was so impressed by the taste of it and how it filled me up so quickly!! Just thinking about it makes me want to go back! The dining room is also decorated super cutely, and it was a really fun place to be! There was fun music in the background, and all the windows along the walls make it super open and light inside. Going to Phil's is like a birthday party and you are the guest of honor. The atmosphere is bright, colorful and the servers are friendly from the moment you enter to point you walk your well fed self out the door. The cheese dip is delicious with their hand made tortillas. The pickled onions have that bite that makes their salads stand out. And I highly recommend the fajita salad.But the shrimp cocktail is a close second. If it is your birthday, a round of singing while you wear the special Sombrero is worth the embarrassment for the flan. I tried Phil Sandoval's for the first time the other day after driving by and the inside is just as beautiful as the outside. The building is super spacious and welcoming! The food was absolutely delicious! I ordered the chicken burrito platter and was blown away by how wonderful it was, especially with the cheese sauce! Well the food was fairly good but not as good as Rosies. Service was mediocre. They do not honor veterans. My credit was duplicated and bogus charges were placed on it a few days later. Honestly, it was pricey for the basic food that wasn't great. We got street tacos, rice, another side of rice, a cheese quesadilla, and 2 soft tacos it was close to $100. Not worth the price and it wasn't seasoned. This is the second time we've tried it and it just wasn't good. read more

The only reason I've given this place two stars is because I thought the building was cool and the waiter was decent. Very nice. But the food was awful. It wasn't that. I picked the wrong thing. It was just all bad. My wife had some chicken that has tasteless. My tacos were small and I don't think the meat was done. The long awaited "new" Phil Sandoval's in Madison! My family was excited to go here after church ended a little earlier than normal. My daughter and her boyfriend were in town, and my father-in-law was along for the ride...I needed a table for 7. The wait was going to be about 40 minutes--no problem for us. It was a little cold and misty outside, and the waiting area was jam packed inside. Phil's uses text messaging flyover alert you when your table is ready. Comfortable with that, we went to our cars to stay dry and warm. My wife had stayed behind at church to socialize and hitched a ride with my daughter. Well, I got a call from my wife 20 minutes after my check-in...our table was ready. I'm not going to complain about them being 20 minutes early...odd that my wife stumbled into that and I didn't receive a message from Phil's, though. As they led us into the dining area we could see it was very open. It is also much brighter light-wise than most cantina's around here. I would describe the atmosphere as loud. I could talk to my daughter next to me, but defiantly could not talk with my older daughter across the table from me without yelling. They had chips and salsa on the table promptly, but it was very stingy. Two small baskets of chips and two little cups of salsa. I was paying the bill, but was so far removed from the chips and salsa that I couldn't partake. I took it as God's way of saying "you don't need that," but I did like watching four of my family members enjoying them . Picture attached...finding the chips and salsa was like playing Where's Waldo. My son ordered some Queso. They brought him Queso...and we had to ask for another basket of chips. I did get to try some of his Queso. I will say...this is THE GOOD STUFF! There was some confusion going on with the bathroom sign. I needed to wash my hands. I don't speak fluent Spanish, but was looking for bano. I saw the sign Pachanga Room. If I had thought hard I would have known it was dance/music. I didn't think that hard. I waded back there and only saw a bunch of people eating. That one is on me. I did find the bathroom, but it wasn't clearly marked from my point of view. Picture attached. The food was good...similar to my favorite (Rosie's) with some minor differences. All in all, it needs to mature. The confusion coupled with the mediocre service...3/5 for me. We go to this restraunt pretty often, the music is to loud have had my order messed up before because the music was to loud waiter can't hear us we can't hear them clearly and when have left overs or orders to go they have left things out of order that we ordered extra and was paying for if got. If you call to tell them they'll try to send you manager who's mailbox is over full and they don't answer. We usually have from 70.00 to 100.00 order and leave a decent tip even when order messed up. read more

My favorite texmex place! There's a lot of places to eat in Madison and Huntsville but we all have the same complaint.... It's just not good. You spend a lot of money to eat out to be disappointed. We cook more at home now than ever before because of the lack of good food at restaurants. It's funny because you will see the same people working. They just jump from one place to the next. Very busy Mexican Restaurant n Madison. Very good menu with a lot of options. The chips and salsa are very good as is the cheese dip. My pork burrito was good, not great. And, the service was a little rude. The wait staff was great, but the front desk wasn't. We had a group of 5 (4 adults and a child) and were told 30 minutes. After waiting 35 min and watching several smaller groups get a table before us, we asked how long. We were told they couldn't put two tables together for a party of 5, but could for 6. So we'd have to wait until a larger table was open. We were finally seated after about 40 minutes. And they were a bit rude about it when we asked. Just a little disappointed. read more

Came here for lunch on a Saturday. The place had tons of open tables but we had to wait 15-20 minutes before sitting down. The salsa is disgusting. It's like eating tomato paste. There no onion, garlic, salt, jalapeño or cilantro. The queso tastes like alfredo sauce. I ordered the beef flautas. Once they got to the table I was pretty blown away. They didn't have shredded beef. They had greasy ground beef... I've never in my life have seen flautas with ground beef vs shredded. read more

We were excited to go to this new location! The food was a TERRIBLE disappointment! We ordered the Mexican City plate and fajitas. They were so so bland and like cheap Tex Mex! The margaritas were sour and watered down! Then to make matters worse, my daughter insisted i try the Sopapillas as they "had to be good". Not the case as they looked like flat beignets and tasted crunchy (what?).. I suggest not wasting your money here! High prices for awful food !!! Went in for the first time and had dinner on a Sunday night. I had the chicken with mole sauce and it was delicious! Everything was great, actually. I was there with my wife and a friend and everyone was satisfied. The servers were courteous and attentive, and the atmosphere there is so cool! This place has a much more fun, modern and upscale vibe than the other Mexican restaurants in town.
