The boots I purchased are gorgeous! Unfortunately, they did not fit me, after a year, the way they fit when I first bought them. They were difficult to break in and I was feeling a bit defeated. I met with one of the reps at a horse show and he was a tremendous help giving me advice on how to get the boots broken in. He even offered to let me know when he would be in our area and would help stretch the boots. If the advice he gave me did not work. In an unfortunate incident, one of the zippers came undone with the zipper hole still at the top. After I had been extricated from the boot, I had several conversations with Enada, the ales rep in the New York store. She was tremendously helpful. She offered a couple of different options. I chose to have zippers in both boots replaced and to have the boots stretched. I got them back within four weeks of sending them to the New York store. They look amazing and fit beautifully. I highly recommend this business for the beauty of their workmanship and the craftsmanship that goes into the product and also for their amazing customer service. read more

The standard by which all other riding boots are measured! A classic and worth the investment because they will last forever. My custom field boots were made by Vogel in 1984. After a long break from riding and showing, I started riding again in 2016 and was able to visit the workshop in Brooklyn to have the tops of my boots let out and a zipper added. Jack, Dean, and David (the master boot maker) could not have been more responsive or helpful. It was a lot of fun visiting the workshop and seeing the process of boot making first hand. By way of reference, I showed in these boots for approximately six months a year for five years in the 1980's, and then keep them stored (untouched) in a show trunk in an alternating cold/hot garage for 27 years, and they still look AMAZING. read more

Based upon my own experience, I just dissuaded friends from buying boots at Vogel's. I should have written this review years ago when the following incident occurred. A friend suggested that I might enjoy "indulging" myself with upscale footwear, so I ordered a pair of custom shoes from Vogel's. I was charged a total of $861 at a time when a similar non-custom made pair would have cost perhaps $200. I was willing to pay the premium just to have a pair of truly comfortable "work loafers." What Vogel's produced for me was a nightmare, so much so that I wondered if Vogel's somehow how mixed up my measurements with someone else's. There was rubbing almost everywhere: outside and top of the large toe, along the side of the pinky, across the top of the foot, etc. I'll cut to the chase: Vogel's absolutely refused to take any remake of the shoes. It basically said that the shoes had been made to specification -- as if my feet couldn't tell whether the shoes fit properly. Vogel's refused any refund, and said that it would "stretch" the shoes where they rubbed, as if that was why I was paying over $861 -- to have Vogel's "stretch" what should have been a form-fitting custom-made pair of shoes. I agreed to have Vogel's stretch the shoes, and when that didn't solve all the problems, Vogel's said that it had done all it could -- or would. In retrospect, I should have sued Vogel's in Small Claims Court, but instead I left the ill-fitting shoes, and wrote it off as an $861 learning experience (not to mention the time I spent in making various trips to Vogel's). I'm glad that I recently was able to prevent those friends from doing any business with Vogel's, and if this review saves others from having the same type of miserable, insulting experience which I had with Vogel's, I will have done my good deed for the day. UPDATE: I received my boots back from E. Vogel. They took about 3 weeks--well within the range of expectation and do they look beautiful. Jack and his team were able to undo the wrongs done by the previous cobbler who attempted to put in a zipper and gussets. Vogel's fix was just what they needed! I'm looking forward to a pair of new Vogel boots. -- I made my pilgrimage from Oakland to E. Vogel in Brooklyn. Bespoke. Handmade. Custom. Heritage brand. Yussss! For an equestrian and someone with a keen interest in design, I was in heaven. 63 Flushing, suite 805 is the E. Vogel workshop. It was my candy store for about an hour. I received a warm welcome from Jack Lynch, great-great grandson of Mr. Vogel who founded the business in 1879. Such a nice man. We had a chuckle at my marred Vogels, a 25+ year old pair that had been, well, done-over by an E. Bay cobbler. Then, we discussed the reconstruction op (refine the shape, take them in, install good zippers) and he took my measurements. Jack began to recall the handwriting of the boot-maker who made my particular pair and the dealer who was working in the SF Bay Area at the time. What a memory, which to me is an indication of someone who is proud of their work---the legacy of E. Vogel! This is when he revealed their age. I asked if I could walk around and take pictures, which did, while speaking with the craftspeople. I felt so welcome and it truly jazzed my NYC trip. I have these boots from five years ago and finally the leather soles were worn to the point where there were holes on the balls of the foot. I am extremely careful about where I pick my places to get my shoes fix. Normally, if it's something small like a polish or getting a heel fixed, I bring it to those "cheaper" shops to get it done. Getting my soles replaced is a big deal to me though. I've passed by this ship many times before but I never got anything from here. This time I figured I should give this place a shot with my boots. They are a custom boot maker so this should be an easy fix for them. I dropped off my boots on a Monday, and I got a phone call on a Thursday telling me they are ready to be picked up. The results are phenomenal! My soles are beautiful! They whole bottom of my shoe looks as if they were just bought, everything! I know there was a chip in the upper back heel (someone accidentally pushed me from the front and my shoe banged against the table really hard and the upper back heel of my shoe got stuck and chipped off a part of my heel :( ) and that was fixed. A while back I was measured for a pair of custom equestrian boots in Buenos Aires, but when they were shipped to me in the U.S., they were great quality and the feet fit beautifully, but the calves were freakishly huge. Clearly someone was had been unable to read someone else's handwriting. I took the boots to E. Vogel to have the calves taken in, and they did an amazing job for about $100. I don't think there is anywhere else in the area that I would trust with my riding boots. read more

They made the adjustments at no charge and also made a few other suggestions to modify the boots, which I accepted. This has been the worst experience I've ever had as a consumer. I ordered a pair of field boots at the end of the summer by visiting the Vogel tent at the Hampton Classic. Measured for custom boots by an actual Vogel family member it is now a year later and they still aren't right. Waiting over 9 months for the first attempt to arrive they fit like a pair of fishing waders riding so high above my knee to mid thigh. The shoe was equally horrendous with so much space for a size 13 foot I began to think whoever made them must have been drunk. 6 successive returns and re-fittings (mind you I"ve ordered boots in the past from Daner and Koening and never had issues like this and they were only semi custom) I had to make the call that they either get them right or we end this bad marriage. Since they were unable to correctly construct a pull on version I demanded they make them with zippers and a new sole (since the originals pulled off when they made the leg so tight I couldn't get them off and tore the skin off my instep during a 90 minute ordeal to remove them.) The charge was they get it right or this bad marriage is over. A week later they arrived - without spur rests. When I called they were closed for vacation from June 21 to July 22nd. Don't buy custom made boots from Vogel. Early last December, 2019, I was measured for custom Vogels by the staff at Dover Saddlery in Raleigh who did a very thorough and detailed job of measuring me. I asked for a traditional top on the boots for fox hunting. I was told the boots would take about 3 months. After not hearing from Dover or Vogel so I called both in early March. They hadn't even started making the boots. Then Covid hit so all bets off for a while, okay with that. In early July, I called again. They still hadn't started so I told both that if I didn't have the boots by the end of August, I wanted my money back. The boots came in late July, the foot part fit great but they were an inch too short and had very high cut Spanish tops like show or dressage boots. NOPE. So I sent Dover a picture of the traditional hunt topped boots that came right off of the Vogel web page, Dover sent the boots back to Vogel and showed them the picture of the tops I wanted. Vogel asked if they could add patent tops to compensate for the boots being too short. I have my hunt colors so I said yes, that would be great. Two weeks later Dover called to say the boots were in, I went to check them out and THEY STILL HAD THE VERY CUT HIGH SPANISH TOPS with their tacky emblem on the side tabs. NOPE. Dover really bent over backwards and wanted to send them back to Vogel again. I told them I would not let Vogel rework the boots for the 3rd time. I am taking the boots to a leather expert to have the tops I WANT put on the boots and Dover is compensating me. The leather expert says this is happening often, he has reworked several pairs of Vogel boots that weren't made correctly. So if you want custom made hunt boots, try another boot maker! read more

I have purchased 7 pair of shoes from Vogel over the years and am very satisfied. The quality of materials and workmanship is unsurpassed. You will obtain a fit from a custom lasted shoe that cannot be matched in a mass produced product. If you have a difficult time buying shoes that fit correctly you will not be sorry you chose a custom fit shoe. This place specializes in custom shoes and boots, but also does shoe repairs. I took my boots there to get a custom sole put on, and they seemed extremely competent in getting the job done. They showed me samples of what I wanted and confirmed to me several times that they were able to accommodate my request. Unfortunately, they did a shoddy job and didn't do what they said they were going to do. The service was so haphazard that the clerk also noticed my shoes were a little dirty and quickly rushed them in a back room for a touch-up. For what I paid ($125), I got a $40 job available anywhere else. I'm typically an agreeable person, so I swallowed the $125 and vowed to never go here again. read more

DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY. Horrible and expensive mistake. I was customer fitted by MIke at Manhattan Saddlery in NYC in August. The boots finally arrived in Feb and did not fit properly at all and were too short on the outside of my leg. They were at least 2" too big in ankle. I could not get a refund, only a new pair. Fat chance. The leather is like cardboard, which is what another reviewer stated. I bought a semi custom boot from Fabbeli while at WEF. I am writing my experience off as a lesson learned in never to go near another pair. read more

Years ago, I made the trip to Vogel Boots to be fitted for their top of the line field boots. I went to the Vogel location so that the boots would be fitted correctly. When I returned to pick up the boots, the ankles were baggy. I requested that this be corrected, and left the boots. When they were shipped to me, the whole leg had been taken in, so that I couldn't get the boots on. I shipped the boots back, and requested that the original measurements be checked, and the fit corrected. When I got them back again, they were still too tight, so that I could not pull them all the way up my calf. Tried breaking them in to stretch them twice, but it was no good. They've sat in their box, brand new, for years now. My trainer had also commented that the boots would be too short, once they broke in... just what everyone wants to hear about their new show boots. My prior boots were Der Dau's... measured once, they fit fine, and wore for years. No more Vogel's for me! read more
