OMG, I have NEVER been so insulted in my LIFE! They sent me the wrong color boot, I called to ensure I wouldn't be charged. In my email requesting the right color I said I couldn't tell if what they sent was black or brown (see pic below). Horrible service at the 5th avenue store from grouchy "French?" Guy. Snide remarks from a shoe salesman don't exactly make you want to buy anything or go back. So unnecessary. Looked like good pricing and selection. Annoying that the shoes that are very discounted don't list the sizes they have left. This would probably assist him in not being so annoyed when you ask about a shoe. Isn't that his whole job though. Yes I've read that people come and try on to go and buy online -that wasn't the case with me-I was very respectful and nice but I didn't find anything I liked. I like to patronize local stores and so bought a pair of running shoes at Windsor shoes for far more than I could've gotten them online. I got them home and realized the fit was not right. I tried to return them but couldn't get my money back, the policy being only exchanges and credits. I wish they said something before I bought the shoes. From communication with other store owners it appears that a very common practice is for people to go try on shoes at a store and then leave without buying. Then people go online and order the shoes they tried on. Hence this leads to very frustrated shoe store owners/employees. Plus I've noticed many families going into shoe stores and creating a huge mess with their kids running amok in the stores. With that in mind , I can see why people working in shoe stores can appear very grumpy. As another poster said - if you go into the store with an idea of what you are looking for and you actually purchase something, plus you treat the store with respect and are courteous to the staff working there, I've experienced fantastic service. I visited this store today to purchase some shoes/sandals for my grand daughter. Upon entering, I wasn't acknowledged, or even greeted. As I browsed their selection, not one employee engaged with me, or demonstrated an interest in selling me anything.....silly me to think this retail shop is in the business of selling. I had to initiate the conversation with the employees for Every shoe that I was interested in. They never once asked if they could help me with a size, or if there was anything specific I was looking for...Nothing. Whilst having my 5 yo grand daughter with me. They didn't assist with sizing her foot to confirm the size, they didn't assist with putting her shoes on or anything. When I've visited Foot Locker, even they did all of the above. If my daughter wasn't having such a hard time finding my gdaughter shoes, I would have definitely did an immediate about face, once they didn't greet or acknowledge me upon my entry. I wound up purchasing 4 pair of shoes @ $200, and I didn't get so much as a thank you. After deciding not to go with the specific brand the sales person rudely said that this store is not for checking the size of your child's foot. Although my intention was not to come to measure my child's foot size, she should be giving this disclaimer before measuring everyone's feet. I have a love/hate relationship with this store. They have middle of the road prices, but a pretty great selection of GOOD shoes - none of those $50-hurt your feet-trendy shoes here. Well made classics that will last you multiple seasons. I just purchased a pair of shoes, being thrilled as I have been hunting for the perfect pair of oxford heels that are fashionable yet appropriate for work. Found them, finally, at Windsor Shoes. I got there about 7-8 minutes before they closed, and while I was quickly browsing, they told me they were closing soon. When I took interest in the shoes that I eventually bought, the saleswoman basically told me to come back later and I didn't have enough time to try any shoes on. "Seriously? I'm here to buy a pair of shoes, and you don't want to sell me these $130 shoes?" She begrudgingly went to find my size, I quickly tried them on, made my purchase, and was out the door before they officially closed. The staff is always helpful here. They don't hover, which is nice, instead they give you time to look around and once your kids are ready to try on then they're very attentive. They have a variety of shoes to choose from for such a small store. there are times where my kids will pick a shoe to try on and then we find out they don't have it in the right size, so then they do try and bring something else similar out. I like that after you buy a certain amount you get a free pair (as long as you hold on to your receipts!). read more

I'm not big on writing reviews, but I want to respond to the negative comments. This is a seriously good store. I've been going here since I first moved to the neighborhood exactly 21 years ago. I've met customers who traveled to come to this store while on vacation in NYC. I've taken advantage of the 'free' (more like shoe discount if you want to get something good) offer, and I'm shamelessly saving up my receipts for the future. Here's what's especially good about Windsor Shoes: They've got great options for problem feet; Very well curated small selection. Do not write this store off because of its size. If you find something at Enslow or Harry's, they are very likely to have it here, sometimes at better prices; They don't mind my dog; When I had to return a pair of heels last spring (those days are over for me), I got a credit, which I used most of to buy Wolky sandals. Expensive, but not the worst fate, as I love them. The biggest negative is that they run out of things. In related news, this is not a place to wait it out for a sale. I have never been treated in a rude manner here - I don't think that I exude wealth, based on places in Park Slope and Smith/Court Streets (also in Manhattan) where I have had that negative experience. Buyer beware!!!! - they will not accept returns- As others have stated, the 'help' stares at you and mutters and it's completely disorienting. After feeling repelled out of the store, and wishy washy on the shoes, I finally purchased them thinking "well I can always try them on at home and bring them back." The next day I returned with my shoes to return them. The lady at the counter got a glazed look and told me you could not return and only get store credit. I told her that was ridiculous and that I'd only had them a day, had not worn them, etc etc. She said that it said this on the receipt. So if you hand your card over, they swipe it and the transaction is now done, isn't it a little bit backhanded to not tell you beforehand and now either way they have your money? It feels illegal to me. Sure - maybe some backarse places only do store credit but you have to WARN PEOPLE FIRST. My neighbor has successfully enjoyed shoes there and likes a policy where they give you a receipt and after 10 pairs of shoes purchased you get the average off of your next pair. That's fine and all but, as I told the clerk, I will not be shopping at a place with such sleazy practice again. read more

The three stars I gave Windsor Shoes are specifically because they have by far the best selection of healthy shoes in the Windsor Terrace area. If you're looking for Danskos, Merrells, Crocs, etc, you'll find by far the most choices here. However, as others have written in their reviews, the staff are indifferent and at times rude. While looking at and trying on shoes, they seem irritated and impatient. I'm a big supporter of local businesses, which is one of the reasons I've shopped at this store, but a better attitude from the staff members would raise this to a 5 star experience instead of just 3 stars, and this week I decided to take my business elsewhere. This has been my go-to shoe store for myself and my family for over ten years. They maybe don't greet you at the door because it isn't Walmart. They let you look and then they are extremely helpful once you ask for help. The store has a huge variety. I like that they keep the previous seasons' shoes on the shelf and available, because let's face it, not every season has the best-looking shoes. They give you a free pair of shoes every time you buy ten pairs, which is great when you have two kids. I had been coming to this shoe store for the past 5 years and previously had great experiences and was happy with the service. However, this weekend I had a horrible experience and will not be returning to the shoe store. My daughters were looking for salt water shoes and I wasn't given any clear info around available colors. I asked about a specific color and first it felt like a hassle, since the person had to go into storage to take a look at the sizes and when they didn't have the one I had asked for, I wasn't given any insight into what colors they had available or when and was told I had to pay a fee for trying on shoes. I was appalled- I had every intention to buy shoes, but needed proper info and selection of available colors or when they would have shoes available. It was humiliating and embarrassing for my daughters-- in addition this was after they waited almost 40 minutes patiently to be helped. When I asked about running shoes for my oldest, I was told they are all good. When I am spending a lot of money for shoes, I want my kids to love them and need to make sure for sneakers that they have the right support and I know all sneakers are not the same. It was really upsetting and I urge you to reconsider before coming here and hope you don't experience the same thing as my daughters did. read more

I've browsed in here before and am always pleased to have a shop nearby that sells high quality, foot-friendly shoes and boots. I went there recently to try to replace a pair of Merrill boots that I had practically worn to shreds. They had the exact same Merrills, but for 40 bucks less than what I paid for them last season. But they were having a store wide sale and I was able to get a beautiful pair of black Blondo knee high boots for 60 dollars less than what they are selling them for at my usual shoe store by my work on the Upper East Side. Also, 60 dollars less than Amazon and a couple of other web sites. The women working there gave me a bare minimum of attention, which is exactly what I want when shoe shopping. They got me the sizes I needed, but left me to try them on by myself. I suppose some people prefer more attention, but not me. Oh, and they do have a frequent buyer club. When you've purchased 10 pair (over an unlimited period of time), you get a free pair of shoes based on the average of what you've spent. It also includes their nearby children's shoe store. Horrible experience 2/3 times I've gone there. Both times the salespeople were helping one family try on about 100 pairs of shoes and ignored me completely. The first time this happened, I left and spent my money elsewhere. Today we went in with a gift certificate. My wife and I have been going here for 10 years with our 3 daughters. We have bought over 40 pairs of shoes for our daughters here. Today, my wife bought a pair for our 3 year old and within 2 blocks half the sole got worn off. We then went back to the store to return the pair. That's when they informed us that we couldn't return it and had to buy a new pair. It is very sad that the workers would rather loose loyal customers than do the right thing. I love this store. I have been shopping there for years and am impressed with the quality selection. Because I have hellishly crooked feet and toes I am one of those pain in the butt customers...trying on dozens of shoes, hemming and hawing and hoping and praying that when I do buy and finally wear the damn things that they don't end up feeling like medieval torture devices. I spend hours marching around the store asking for yet another pair, another color, another size, and have always found the owner and all his staff friendly and helpful. This is a great community store and I want to add my voice to its fans. No, they don't Usain-Bolt across the store to greet you, they don't grin madly like pageant contestants, and (at the adult store) after you've browsed a bit you usually have to ask them to find a size. This is because it's consistently a very busy place. I find them polite and professional, and selection is good, as is the advice on what they have; they have another store they can call if they are out of something. My practice for the 10 years I've been shopping here is to tell them what I am looking for, have my kid's foot measured and then have them tell me which shoes they have in that size. Never a problem. With three kids, I have stacked up something like a half-dozen discount or free shoes with their "Buy 10, get 1" program. They enrich the neighborhood. read more

I've been going to this store regularly because they have a great selection of comfortable shoes, but today the staff went over the edge from their usual cold indifference into being just plain rude. I've bought many pairs of shoes there in the past, but yesterday when I tried on a few pairs of shoes, none were completely comfortable, so I left empty handed. Then today I decided to go back and try on a different brand that I remembered liking in the past. When I walked in and asked to try on the shoes, the sales woman said "oh you want to try on those ... again?" with a tone that implied I was somehow wasting her time. I replied, "actually, I haven't tried these on yet," and then she actually argued with me "yes, you did yesterday". My partner, who was with me both times, said "no, actually, she didn't." The employee gave me one of those stares mentioned in the other reviews. As I tried a few variations in size and color of the brand I wanted, she continued to give me 'tude and whispered with another clerk behind the counter. I bought the shoes, but now I wish I hadn't rewarded that behavior. Frankly, I walked 20 min out of my way to go to Windsor Shoes in order to support a local store, but with that rudeness, I think I'm better off buying from the internet. read more
