I live in Evanston so this is the closest fabric store to my house. It takes me less than 5 minutes to drive there. For that, I really like it. I also like that they do have an extensive variety of fabrics, it's interesting. However, the cotton prints that they carry I don't really care for and that's what I am usually shopping for. I can't stand the way the store is laid out and I find it extremely irritating to have to pay 3-4 times (each "room" has its own register and you have to pay in the room where the product is found). And as mentioned by so many, the help is not super helpful. Honestly, if I didn't live right there, I'd probably happily never go here. read more

I used to love this place: amazing selection, many wonderful fabrics. I used to come from NW Indiana to visit. It was one of the pluses of moving to the Chicago area. I have much-loved garments sewn from Vogue purchases. But in the last several years, there is less and less that is appealing. More and more that is cheap, boring, in poor taste, or just shoddy. How can Vogue have less than 4 stars? I feel guilty giving it only four. This place has been around since 1945 and takes up half a city block (they're big blocks). They have an entire remnant room. They have an amazing trim department which takes up a full room (includes a feather section with ostrich & multiple colors of marabou, and a "Beaded Trim" section). They have fringe in a wide variety of colors (OK, only up to 18") and had not only your choice of various gold braids but the gold bullion trim I had trouble finding online. They regularly carry beautiful silk fabrics that I would totally buy if I had a clue what to make with them. They have a giant selection of zippers in various colors and lengths (really, who else has a zipper department?). They have a case full of various rhinestone buttons. They also have various baskets of "goodies" for $1 or 50 cents (fake flowers, misc trim, etc.) and trim remnants. No one does trim remnants. (And some of the random sale items - red, pink and black rhinestone trims for 50% off!) I'd put them up against the stores in the NY fabric district and they'd have nothing to be ashamed of; I ran into a guy from New Orleans who says he comes here to get the sparkly/blingy materials for Mardi Gras. Yes, the fabric can be hit and miss - it's in the nature of the beast. But there are rooms and rooms of it, and if you don't know what you're looking for, the staff will tell you which room to go to. OK, you may get stuff cut in more than one department. Or not - seems to vary. This place is an institution and I love it. Easy parking nearby (at least on a Friday during the day), either metered or free in nearby residential area. Good access to the Metra. read more

Stopped here when me and my sister visited Chicago and I never wanted to leave!!! By far the best part of our trip, for me at least. Everything is priced so reasonably. It makes me wonder if Joanne fabrics up charges their fabrics because of the store name. My only issue, and it's not enough to detract a star, was that I could not find any brocades that weren't church brocades. This might be on me however, because I was not there more than once. I might have missed them. They even had vegan leather! Definitely will be coming back when I visit Chicago again. For me, Vogue is synonymous with high fashion. I am here in Chicago and really wanted to find a high end fabric store for clothing. Fun knits and other fabrics for a wardrobe. While there is more fabric in one store, than most fabric stores, the colors and quality did not match what I had invisioned. Total disappointment. This place has everything and the prices are decent. The selection is everything under the sun. I would take 1/2 star off because the staff seem to congregate and talk and never get to you ... they have like 15 registers but none of them are open or has a person. This location is far from where I am but there selection is very large, and when I have a question either person working can tell me where I need to go for it. I always think of this place first when I need small side fabrics, something different, or in this most recent case, I needed lace bead applique's for my sister veil and we found sound here for an affordable price. read more

I made the trip up from the city today to stock up on remnants and fabric for a few novelty items I'm working on, but that was a futile effort. The selection of silk prints was very limited (the silk offerings weren't great all in all). That would have been a shrug/whatever situation, but as I was about to leave I witnessed an INCREDIBLY awful manager/employee interaction. This woman (presumably his superior) was standing in the middle of the salesfloor admonishing an old man for placing the wrong bag on a bolt of fabric - there was nothing reasonable about the way she approached the situation. Her tone was absolutely disgusting - she was speaking to him in a slow, condescending manner with punctuated remarks and trivial questions as if he was less than human for misunderstanding her (it was clearly an issue lost in translation). This was not a matter of one irritated response to a mistake - it was a long series of extremely inappropriate remarks. I was so shocked that it was happening, I didn't react - I looked (wide eyed) at the very nice woman who was cutting my fabric and got the same dead-eyed look from all the employees across the counter which made me feel like this type of thing had probably happened before. There was another girl shopping there who looked equally disturbed. While I figure out where our wholesale orders will be moving to, this negative Yelp review will suffice. I wish I would have reacted to the situation more appropriately in person. read more

4 1/2 stars. I have now been to both the Downtown and Evanston locations, and I was pleasantly surprised with both. They have a great selection, especially for suit fabric remnants at both locations. Each is enough for a skirt or dress and usually $5-$10. Also, make sure you check out their clearance lining. There are a lot of basic colors for $1-$2/yard. Can't beat that! As for the customer service, I did not have a problem at either location. All of the staff were helpful, asked if I needed help with anything, said thank you (!!!). The ladies cutting fabric at the Downtown location did roll their eyes and make snarky remarks about a customer on two occasions, but they deserved it. One customer was screaming at her husband (over the phone) at the top of her lungs and *crying* that she couldn't have the expensive fabric that she wanted, then bought it anyway. The other was being really nasty to the lady cutting her fabric. The only reasons for the '4 1/2' instead of '5' stars are 1) I went all the way up to the Evanston store on Labor Day and it was closed. I had looked on the website and it said nothing about holiday hours. Yes, I know that it was a holiday, but I have worked in A LOT of retail stores and they are always open on Labor Day. 2) I would LOVE it if they had more fun fashion prints in quality fabrics. I like to make dresses, and (like a lot of other stores...) there were lots of basics, cotton prints, etc., but I would love to see a purple satin with polka dots, for example. read more

I've just read through several previous reviews, and feel that I absolutely must let everyone know that my on-line experience has been superior to any other on-line or brick and mortar fabric store from whom I've purchased fabric and notions. Because the fabrics are well-sorted and organized in an easily accessible format, I was able to get to exactly the fabric I had in mind. Two days after I made my purchase of two different fabrics, I received a call from a Vogue staffer asking me about the thread I had requested be matched to my purchased fabrics. We discussed the colors and her reasons for choosing particular colors, and so I revised my decision. Four days later, counting the weekend, I received my package, and I must emphasize that I am extremely pleased with my purchase, and the exemplary customer service. I've been sewing for over 50 years, visited all kinds of fabric stores from Pittsburgh, to Philadelphia, to New York, etc., sewn my own dresses using natural fiber fabrics, bought millions of miles of thread, purchased four sewing machines, and, without a doubt, this is the finest shopping experience I've ever had. I will be back to purchase more fabrics and notions, and encourage others to visit this website and explore its many and varied components. read more

The selection is huge. I'm a beginner. I told the employee that I was looking for a basic easy bag for my first project and asked for direction in looking for a pattern. She handed me a 1500 page book of patterns for clothes, purses, and more that seemed to be all different skill levels. A lot of them were extremely complicated. Finally, I picked a pattern and asked which fabrics would be good for the pattern and for a beginner. She told me a beginner could use anything in the store. People around me seemed to be getting great service but I think they cater more to the more experienced customers. I was disappointed. I thought Vogue would be a better place to shop than a chain craft store because I assumed I'd be able to have questions answered etc. Unfortunately, I was wrong. Vogue Fabrics makes me want to move to Evanston! I've been an online customer with Vogue Fabrics for several years now and subscribe to their seasonal catalog which provides swatches of custom coordinated fabrics. The quality of their selections are top notch and priced extremely reasonably. I recently cut a suit from a lovely teal rayon-poly twill and realized I'd miscalculated the yardage. The fabric was no longer available to order online. I nearly cried. I called Sean the next day and explained the situation. He checked the warehouse and informed me the fabric was available and took the time to add it back to the site so I could place my order. On previous orders, I received a personal phone call from Bea, the customer service rep, to inform me they were short on yardage for one fabric. She amended my order and sent my parcel. It's not just the high quality fabric that keeps me coming back to their online store, its the amazing customer service! I've heard about Vogue for years and was so excited to finally give it a try. I went with a list for a small project and was very disappointed. The selection of cotton prints was abysmal. The zippers were a disorganized mess and I couldn't find the right size/color. The store was very disorganized and cluttered and the staff was curt and unhelpful. The prices and selection aren't good enough to warrant that kind of shopping experience. Good for remnants. Great selection of wool suiting and silks. Update: I did go back in search of buttons. I received my order online. It is special occasion fabric and I paid a lot for it. It is covered in large ink smears. I cannot believe someone did not see this when they were packaging the fabric. Fortunately I ordered more than what I needed and the dress is for a one year old. It is her first birthday and I wanted the dress to be special. I can cut around the area and make it work. If it was a larger dress I would not be able to do this. I do not have time to return it and get something else, so I will use what I have. However I will not order again. I simply cannot believe these markings were not seen. I feel it was carelessness for someone not to have seen this. Half a yard in the center of the fabric on the fold is unusable. There is ink scattered throughout so I have to carefully place my pattern pieces to avoid the spots. Very annoying. read more

I go here about once every week or two for work. They almost always have what I am looking for, which can be somewhat obscure. Their remnant section is INSANE and loveable. There may not be the thoroughness of a Joanne fabric but I do love to support a real-life business rather than a corporation. I don't really give a second thought to the "sourpuss" employee comments...they just have their own rhythm here, and you just go with it. People are most helpful if you pay attention to how the store is layed out. Great deals abound! read more

My dependable 1960's Singer Touch&Sew Model 750 had two things wrong with it that I could not fix. I was VERY pleased that I could carry it in (very heavy) to Jim during his REPAIR hours inside Vogue Fabrics of Evanston. In this instance, he was able to repair it then and there, while I watched, and it all only cost $22.50. He explained my bobbin retainer wasn't being held in the right place and the timing belt had slipped a tooth or two, but now its all readjusted and back in the game! BRAVO! read more

The selection is really great, and the pricing isn't bad either. My only gripe is the store setup. It's huge, and partitioned off into sections (one has fabric, one has sewing accessories, one has upholstery, etc.), but you have to pay for an item in its own section, meaning you could potentially pay 4 to 5 times. In addition, it seems like they're always understaffed and if I have a question about something I have difficulty finding help. read more

They have a great selection, but the customer service is subpar. You have to hunt someone down to have fabric cut, but you can't take things from room to room. You end up paying multiple times, and that in itself takes forever because everything is calculated by hand. From my memory, the Roosevelt rd location wasn't any better, but at least it was centrally located. read more

This review is for vogue fabrics evanston. Horrible horrible customer service. I have been going here over 2 yrs and the customer service is very much lacking. The owner Aaron is rude and dismissive when expressing a concern to him. It's easy to see why the people that work there are so rude. The fabrics are seconds. Don't be fooled. This is why the place is so cheap. The employees tell you to accept spots and dirt due to low price and quality. The notions room is stocked full of trims, but a good portion of it is dirty and dingy. I have been told on numerous occasions that I can wash it. After 2 yrs of digging thru crap to find a gem, and being treated bad at the same time, I've had enough. If you are an occasional seamstress or just have a quick project, go there. If you are a professional seamstress who appreciates quality, by all means pass this place up. There are other places with quality fabrics and much higher professional business standards. read more

This place is fantastic. However for the standard craft store shopper this place can be a bit overwhelming. They have the best selection you just really need some time and patience to pick through everything. Also it tends to always be crowded no matter what time or day you go. I recommend planning this trip to be like a whole day thing so you can really investigate what is on the bottom of the pile. I usually take the metra up in the morning shop as long as I need to- then go have lunch a Lupita's, then home to take a nap. The store is huge! read more

After reading all the negative reviews, I was leery of going to Vogue, but it was recommended to be by my tailor, so I went. The physical store would be right at home in Mayberry, RFD, but the selection is phenomenal! How to narrow down one's search is the tricky part. A very nice employee steered me toward the fabric I was looking for although she had to leave her "room" for two minutes. I think the lack of sufficient staff can be part of the reason for poor reviews. It's hard to cut fabric while customers are demanding to know where to find such and such. And yes, orders are written up on those pads (with carbons?) manually. Still, I was motivated to write a review because my experience was positive. read more

This place is enormous! There is a huge selection of fabric, plus trimmings, sewing accessories, ribbons, buttons, all the usual suspects in a fabric store. Moreover, they have excellent sewing machine and upholstery departments. The service isn't stellar - in particular, many of the women at the fabric stations are extremely laid-back and not in any kind of rush, and it can be awkward figuring out where to 'queue' when they're busy. Having said that, I've always found the guys on the floor to be really polite and helpful, and the range/prices make this a place well worth a visit. My main criticism is that the fabric selection is kind of .... dorky? It would probably take more digging than I've done to find anything 'trendy' (I tend to like the scandinavian design vibe, this place is more a country kitchen or superhero pajamas place). read more

Vogue has a great selection of fabrics and knick knacks. The prices are very reasonable, and you can find really good deals at the pre-cut-fabrics section. The sewing classes taught by Veronica Brackett are also excellent. The check out process is inconvenient and some of the employees are not very friendly, but overall, this is a great place to shop for fabrics and learn sewing. read more

Made my first trip to Vogue today. Holy crap, they have a LOT of fabric! I do agree with other reviewers that you should come armed with patience and a list of things you need...and some free time. Otherwise it's a bit overwhelming. But their prices seem to be pretty darn good, and you can't beat the selection--it kicks Joann's ass. The staff was also pretty helpful when I needed it. I think once I move up to making clothes, I'll be coming back here--Joann does well with cotton and fleece selections, but there are other gorgeous things at Vogue like wool! And suitings! Vogue Fabrics is one of the best places to buy fabric in the Chicago area. You just can't buy the same quality fabrics or find Vogue's low prices at your local craft store. I needed a basic black gauzy fabric for a party decoration and found something immediately at Vogue for just $1.99/yard. And when I needed a fine cotton batiste only Vogue had it. If Vogue's inventory were more consistent I'd give it five stars. As it is, you just can't tell for sure that they'll have what you're looking for from one week to the next. I finally went here after passing by for years. I needed to repair a small hole I manged to poke in a linen blouse by walking into a TV cart at work. I found a fix online, but after I explained what I trying to do to the staff, they guided me to a much simpler (1 step!) iron-on fix. I also need to get upholstery foam to repair an ottoman that my cat decided was his enemy and must be destroyed. They had a ton of different sizes of foam as well as a huge selection of upholstery fabric. The staff was a bit overwhelmed since I was there on a weekend, but they were very knowledgeable and helpful. I took the purple line to get there, which was very easy, but there's also street parking. read more

Everytime I go here I'm overwhelmed by all the different fabrics they have here. This store is HUGE and it is filled with so many different options for any project you may have in mind. I also find the sales people to be really helpful. When I went in, a sales person was so wonderul at helping me pick out the perfect material for curtains for my home. And this store has awesome sales several times throughout the year. Just look for their add in local flyers. As a "crafter" and a sometimes sewer of small projects, I was dissapointed in their selection of cotton fabrics - but that is defenitly not their niche! I imagine if you make clothes or need upholstery fabric - this is your store. They have an amazing selection of fabrics and the store is very large; and their button selection is like none I have ever seen! As for the rude workers I read about in previous reviews, I saw none. I was asked 4 seperate times if I needed help in a friendly way, and the staff was very knowledgeable. When I finally get around to making that skirt...this will be my destination. read more
