A super fun, adorable place with really friendly service. However, I just can't say I love it--I actually somewhat regret going here because once we were in the door and getting the attentive service, we realized that everything just seemed way overpriced. The liqueurs were $13 for the pocket-sized 100ml bottle, and while most of the ones we tried were quite tasty, they just weren't good enough to justify the price. I mean, the sour cherry tasted like cherry juice, available at supermarkets at $5 for 10x the amount. The rose liqueur tasted like rose macarons and was pretty interesting, but for $11 I can get a whole 750ml of Sarracco Moscato wine which tastes orgasmically like rose. And when you consider that 100ml is only enough to mix 1oz shots into three cocktails, well... I'm pretty much only going to be sipping this stuff straight, when I feel like I've been good. As to not leave empty-handed, we did end up getting a 100ml of orange liqueur. Probably wouldn't return. read more

Really fun and interactive store. Be prepared to sample! This would be a great date place or a fun place to take out of towners. Here are some sample combos that we have tried for salad dressing: Raspberry Balsamic and Hazelnut Olive Oil Pumpkin Seed Olive Oil and Honey Balsamic We also purchased the Sour Cherry Vodka and I made a mean cocktail this weekend with that, Mandarin Absolut, and some sparkling blood orange soda from Straubs. Felt treated unfairly. My friend and I came here for sample tasting during one of Downtown Maplewood 's events. I think it was the the strings event or sidewalk art, anyway it was a terrible experience. As my friend and I stood in front of the sample table for 8ish minutes waiting on a wine sampling over 15 people were given sample tastings who showed up after our arrival. My friend and I decided to leave since it didn't seem think they wanted to serve us. read more

This place is pretty neat. I enjoyed the way this place looked. There was a decent selection of vinegars, including one that I really liked. My favorite was the blueberry one. It was super delicious. Wish I could have gotten a bottle, wasn't shopping for myself so I had to say no. The nice thing here is that there is a good selection of dry wines. Perfect for at least one person in my family. I'm not a big dry wine person, so the selection was really limited for me. I wasn't a big fan of any of their liquors at this visit. None of them really appealed to me. Now that's not to say that the selection could change a little with the seasons and I can enjoy some more holiday like ones. I would love to come back and get something yummy and delicious to cook with for myself in the future. I love Vom Fass! Shopping here is like an adventure! It is located on the wonderful little strip in Maplewood on Manchester Rd. among all of the other neat and unique stores. The customer service here is excellent. When we walked in, we admitted to the associate that we were clueless. He explained that Vom Fass means "from the cask" in German. That it is a franchise that sells olive oils, vinegars, liqueurs, whiskeys, etc. For the olive oil and vinegar they offer a lot of selections of different flavor infused choices. You buy a bottle which can be reused on additional visits. The liqueur and whiskey is sold pre-packaged due to liquor laws in Missouri/US. Two amazing things about this store: 1. TASTING!!!!! The associates are really encouraging of you tasting the products. We tasted mostly the liqueur and whiskey. 2. Recipes: they have these little cards for their products with recipes on them. We took one home with us (along with our purchases) and made this really great martini! Definitely check this place out! It is a little expensive, but think of it like a treat for your kitchen! read more

In love! This store is just a foodie's haven. I've never been so excited to see so many different oils and vinegars! Also plenty of spirits to taste as well. We had quite the helper as she was super knowledgeable. I ended up getting a pistachio oil and a fig oil. I also bought some 29 year old scotch for my Dad. I didn't taste the scotch, but they have some fun, flavored liquors you can try as well and they were good. I've been wanting to come here for awhile and my holiday shopping trip into Maplewood gave me the perfect excuse! I like to cook but this place was overwhelming! There were a lot of things I hadn't heard of. Since I was looking for a gift for a foodie, I wasn't sure what to get. A guy came over to help me, and I told him that. He showed me all the containers and then suggested I might look at their gift boxes. Score! They were small and not too expensive - $13-17. They each had 3 small bottles in them and were themed to fit a country like Greece, Spain, Morocco, Thailand, and France. I went with the France set. I know the recipient of my gift will have fun finding uses for them! I can't wait to go back and try something new. The place is super nice and feels fancy. There are lots of casks and such around the store. Different spirits and oils for you to sample and purchase. While this store isn't exactly my style (the cheap bottle of EVOO at shop n save tastes just fine to me!), it's nice for the more sophisticated foodie. The candy store for adults! I went looking for olive oil and vinegar and was ASTOUNDED by the selection! I had no idea there were so many options and no clue how to make a decision. The staff was super helpful and showed me the ropes from narrowing down my choices based on need, to tasting, to selecting the right sized bottle. If you have a bottle already and just want to fill it, that's perfectly OK. If you want to buy one there, they have quite a few to choose from. I had no idea that I would need to buy a bottle, but once I understood how the store works, I completely got it. I cannot comment on the side of the store with brandy and other liqueurs, but I was impressed with the selection, I just didn't have a reason to buy any specialty liqueurs the day of my visit. Vom Fass offers wine tastings and a bunch of other tasting and classes for those of us that are beginners and need a little education on the finer things in life. read more

Picked up a gift here the other night for my mother. It was my third time in the shop, first time buying something. The staff here are really sharp and nice. I was picking up a few oils and vinegars and the understanding and quickness they have of their products is pretty incredible. Vom Fass store in St. Louis is very very nice! I stopped here during my road trip across U.S. and was amazed at how tasteful is the design of the store. I love Vom Fass's oils, vinegars and liquors. I really enjoyed my first trip to this shop. Apparently this chain is huge in Europe, but it's the only one I've ever encountered. The staff here was phenomenal, so knowledgable. They let us taste anything that interested us and suggested amazing combinations that I really enjoyed. I didn't love everything I tasted, learned I'm just not a cognac girl, but the quality of everything was great. Got some wonderful orange ev olive oil and fig balsalmic vinegar that is really tasty, as well as the sour cherry vodka which makes a great fizzy drink. You can't go wrong when you've got olive oil, vinegar, AND liquor tasting under one roof. It's easy to spend quite a bit here but so enjoyable to try the different oils and bring them home to play with while cooking. The premade gift sets or make-your-own gift sets make for excellent birthday or Christmas gifts (and are pretty unique gifts, as well!). Christmas season tends to be a bit busy so you will have to wait a little bit to get some attention from an associate for tasting (not to their fault). If you are low on time/patience during Christmas season, the earlier you go, the better. Came in during a local event and ended up sampling and buying a few liqueurs. The staff was great about offering information and trying to help everyone even though the shop was quite busy. After seeing the wide variety of beautiful bottles and interesting sounding flavors, I decided that I would sample some liqueurs and gift them to a couple friends for upcoming birthdays. I came away with a nut chocolate bottle for myself and apple pie and Irish whiskey liqueurs for my friends. I didn't sample any other products, but the shop also had many interesting, unique spirits in other beautiful bottles as well as fancy oils and vinegars on the other side of the store. Nestled, almost hidden, on Manchester Road in the hip Maplewood neighborhood is this unparalleled liquor, wine & specialty food store that I cant get enough of. Vom Fass is a franchise store based out of Germany that you wont currently find anywhere else in the St. Louis area. What is so fun about Vom Fass is that you can go in there and taste a variety of different liqueurs to the point that you walk out of there with a nice buzz and a bag full of unique liquor. My first time in the store I tasted Rose Liqueur, Absinthe (the first time ever), Elderflower Liqueur, Nut Chocolate, Vanilla Cream, and Lemoncello. I was having so much fun that I didn't even notice all of the wine, infused olive oils and specialty vinegars. The service here is unmatched as you will get one on one attention, education and tastings. The second time I came back I tried some oils & vinegars. These are not your normal run of the mill boring old oil & vinegars. You are sure to want to purchase something and when you decide what you want to buy you have to pick out the bottle. They have some of the coolest, cutest glass bottles for your oils & vinegars. The bottles aren't cheap, but you can bring them back for a refill next time you come in. I left with a strawberry vinegar & Basil olive oil which when combined with a little salt & pepper makes the most amazing salad dressing. Did I mention that they also have whiskey? Well they do! And you can taste it for free. I also checked out their wines a little closer and they have a small selection but some interesting bottles. You will find California, Oregon, Italian & French wines among others here and they offer wine tastings on Friday nights so you can try before you buy. They also have a reward card where you earn points toward free stuff. The liqueurs come in many different sizes so you dont have to spend a fortune on a gift or to add a unique liquor to your home collection to make you look extra cool and sophisticated. I am an...enthusiastic cook. I'm not a chef and I don't have formal training, but I know what I like and I like to learn how to solidly cook a dish and then branch out and experiment from there. I've been lately hoarding this amazing wild mushroom olive oil that cost me $13 for 100 ml, and I easily could get more, but my pocketbook doesn't really like me all for it. So I've been on a mission to see if I could find something just as good...without the sticker shock. Since I've given sets of olive oils and vinegars from Vom Fass to friends (and now actually am super embarrassed by it), I set out for Vom Fass to see if I could find a more reasonable replacement. So...in reading the reviews, I really think that service in this location is hit or miss. In the ten, fifteen times I've been in this store, I've never actually ever had anyone ask me if they could help me. I've had hellos shouted my way, but I've never had anyone come up to me and ask if they could offer me a sample or if I had any questions. Hence, the sets. It's ok, I think. Your loss in seducing me to hand over my credit card. I walk in on this particular day and there were three employees, one with a group of people by the alcohol section and two by the registers. I wandered around for awhile and then asked them if they had a mushroom oil. The girl told me they had a porcini one. So I asked if I could sample it and two of the vinegars I had my eye on. I wish I could tell you that what transpired next was what a cook's wet dreams are made of: sharing of recipes, hints to how to best use an oil, secret ingredients, etc. Yeah, no. She was absolutely so disinterested and unengaged that I felt like I was bothering her. And I felt like she was totally relieved when I made my selection after three samples. It was like, wham, bam, thank you ma'am. I wish I could also say that my selections in the end were good. They were pretty solid in the store. The porcini ($6.59/100 ml) had a clear, very subtle mushroom taste without any aftertaste. The herb vinegar ($1.49/ml) was light without being too tart. The herb vinegar is pretty much standard on salads, but it's nothing to write home about. It's the porcini that falls flat. I've been using it pretty steadily for the past several weeks and I've been really, really disappointed in it. That subtle mushroom taste literally disappears the moment you put it with something: bread, greens, grilled vegetables. It doesn't impart any flavor if you do something more complicated, like omelets or steak. But the worst part is when you put it on pasta or risotto. For some reason, not only does it taste like regular olive oil, it makes everything gummy and tacky. Added herbs stick to the plate, the fork, even to your teeth. It's just the weirdest thing. Purported to be an alternative to truffle oil, their porcini is the furthest thing from any close comparison. The only good thing is that I like the bottle? It has a special pour spout so that when you are finished with it, it's not dripping down the side of the bottle, and this is something that some oil/vinegar stores do not include. Update: Ok, so now after I've written this review, that pour spout has gotten stuck in the cap, and I can't get it out. Ridiculous. I just cracked open the other bottle and the pour spout was already stuck up there. So I take back my original statement...there is nothing new about the bottle either. Vom Fass means from the barrel...maybe from the lower half of the barrel, that is. It's okay for a chain, but there are better oil/vinegar chains out there, even though Vom Fass is unique in that they sell alcohol too. Prices are more reasonable than at other places, and prices are lower in store than they are on the website. It does cost additional money to buy the bottles ($2.99 for the 100 ml), but you bring them back after you're done with them, and you can reuse them. I'm going to keep trying some of the other oils and vinegars to see if there are any good ones in the bunch, but right now, I'm really not impressed. And I do need to finish getting 10 punches on my frequent shopping card so I can get at least a free oil or vinegar out of my experiences. Otherwise, I can get the same quality for cheaper at the local grocery store. The only reason why it even rates three stars instead of a two and why I'll go back to try some more is the fact that they are so actively involved in Maplewood events and even host their own cooking and wine pairing classes. read more

We dropped our dog off for a groom at Airedale Antics, and noticed this cool new store next door, so we decided to drop in on a fine Saturday morning. What a great experience this store is - and they have really cool stuff too. Despite the fact that it was 11AM, the very friendly and very European (German, I think) associate helped us, and by us I mean me, some very fine Irish Whiskey and Scotch from all different parts of Ireland. Straight from the cask too. She was very helpful and explained each one and the origin of the scotches. Very cool. They let you try everything here! They have specialty oils and vinegars that you can sample, as well as liquor concoctions and fine wines. Everything is relatively inexpensive - $15 for 100ml of Scotch (13 years aged). And the best part is, you get to pick out a cool looking glass bottle to take home with you. You can bring back the bottle to be refilled for oils and vinegars, but not for alcohol. This place is great for anyone looking for a unique gift or just wanting to sample some original liquids. A great addition to the Maplewood strip. read more

Stumbled across this place while walking around on a nice day in Maplewood. What a gem! We were welcomed in and immediately encouraged to try everything, from vanilla dream liqueur to apple pie to limoncello to scotch. We took our time trying lots of samples, but favorites included the limoncello and sour cherry vodka. The olive oil/vinegars are great too -- ask someone to recommend a vinegar/oil combo for you to try (think hazelnut oil with raspberry vinegar). Get a bottle of each and have them gift-wrap it for a unique present. Overall, we had a lot of fun here, and I found a couple of really unique presents. I love love love love this store! Great ideas for salad dressing! I came here to find walnut oil for a multigrain bread. Not only did I find walnut oil, but I found pumpkin seed oil which my dad has been trying to hunt down. They have seasonal balsamic vinegars which some of them are quite delish! You can mix & match different oils & vinegars for the perfect salad dressings. Who would have known that basil infused olive oil would go great with strawberry balsamic vinegar??? Custom oils vinegar we are talking wonderful flavor of plum raspberries elderflower etc then the whiskey liqueurs as vanilla dream or framboise which I can honestly say kicks the living daylight out of chambourd. If your a scotch man this is the place of your dreams they even have Absinthe and not the kind that makes you see pretty pick elephants. The staff is well versed in what they have. We visited this store on July 12, at Art festival. The store was very crowded because of the event, but we were so excited to see a lot of oils and vinegars. Two of us tried to taste some of them. But they didn't know they were trying spirits. When they reached their hand to a bottle of spirits, suddenly one staff came to us and told us "get out or I'll call police. It's against Missouri Law" . At first, we couldn't understand what had happened because he shouted to us as if we were criminals. He looked obviously furious. he repeated saying that, so we decided to leave the store. I understand he was too nervous because of the crowdedness on the day. Even so, his response was too impolite. Also, I felt some racism from him. If we have been elder Anglo Saxons, he wouldn't have treated us like that... Actually, we are Asian. We looks young, but are enough old and educated to understand proper manner. If he have told us the manner calmly, we would have been glad to follow it. Ventured in here at the urging of my husband. I needed a bottle of wine for a party and he told me to go here. Small but good wine selection with varied prices from $10 on up. They have plenty of additional info on the wines so you will be able to figure out if it's what you need. And then the oils, tons of oils and vinegars and liquors. It makes me want to be a better cook. I kept reading them all thinking "orange oil with fish maybe? Or the jalapeno oil with eggs? Maybe just dipping bread in them?" I need to figure out what I'm going to do with the oils before I go back and spend a lot of dough. But I will be back--without a doubt. It's an awesome store. The products are amazing and the shopping experience is unique. I can't wait to give their infused oils and other goodies out as Christmas gifts! I know the recipients are going to be thrilled. I was also impressed with their selection of higher end liquors. They even have Calvados, which is not something you see often. However, to put it bluntly (and I'm feeling blunt lately), the service kind of stinks. Yes, this is going to be another review where I express my frustration with laid back staff. Sure, no one likes an overly aggressive sales person in their face while they're trying to shop. But on the other hand, should it take 15 minutes to check out when there are only five people shopping and as many people working there? I would suggest that, if you want a more streamlined experience, grab a salesperson as soon as you walk in and hold on for dear life. They have a tendency to wonder off to the back of the store (to package their products, I would assume) and stay there for a while. While I was in the store today and ready to make my purchases, EVERY staff member was back there. While I had been the only person in line, suddenly a group of people were surrounding me. By the time someone wandered back to the front a good TEN MINUTES later, there was a small crowd in front of the register. The sales person asked, "So who's next?" That's when the middle aged women of St Louis County pounced! They all knew I was first in line (ahem, I was standing in front of the register and had my boxes on the counter while they were standing behind me), yet they shamelessly cut in front of me. Could I have said something? Yes. But I was raised not to speak back to my elders (and yes, you lunching ladies of St Louis County are my elders) so my friend and I just stood there, tight lipped. My point is simply that, had the staff had a better handle on the store, line cutting and other inappropriate behavior would be kept in check. We eventually made it out the store. Again, I'm pleased as can be with my purchases, but the shopping experience itself left something to be desired. read more

I've been in several oil/vinegar shops, but never one with liqueurs, etc. We tasted a couple liqueurs and a few vinegars. They were tasty and the staff, once we found someone to help us, was friendly. We left with a small bottle of one of the vinegars. I'm not crazy about their system of paying extra for a basic bottle, but I think they'll refill it if we bring it back. Sadly, there is not a store located where I live, we we'd have to make a special stop next time we're in town. read more

I just found out this Place in the nice City of Maplewood. Vom Fass....inspired my coking experence even more. This wonderful Oils and Vinegars are great for every Dinner and changed my Meals to a fantastic mouthwatery dining experiences. Even if I had to wait for the delicious Cherry liqueur which was a gift for a friend, my shopping expirience was wonderful. The Stuff is very friendly and competent. I disagree with Jessica C. Yes, I had to wait a bit too, but got a beautiful wraped Gift I was proud of to give away as a Present. Well it's Christmas time and everybody is busy and sometimes little mistakes happened. NOT A BIG DEAL...... I had the Pleasure to be served from a nice competent Lady, who gave me so many Ideas to improve my coking. I first learned of Vom Fass from my son who worked for them in Kansas City and now this is one of my all time favorite specialty shops. Anita, the owner holds wine tastings frequently to help fundraise for various organizations which is extremely commendable and her inventory is the best- she can also order all kinds of things from distributors and wineries she knows. I love the fact that you can try most everything including an extremely high end cognac before you buy it and that she has a map on the wall that shows where everything comes from. I learn so much about different American and European exclusive vineyards and the oils and vinegars are wonderful. You really couldn't ask for anything better. I am so happy we have one here in St. Louis. Other cities our size are not as lucky! read more

They have a great assortment of scotch. They buy barrels from small distilleries throughout Scotland. Once they are out of a variety, they don't get in more of the same one. You can taste them all and the staff is very knowledgeable about where the are from, and how they taste, and which to try if you like a certain type. They also have liquors, olive oil, and vinegar.
