This has been my go to place to get wine and seafood. I have been going here since Bob seafood closes. They sell fresh tuna and salmon that I tend to eat sashimi style. They taste pretty good. Honestly, this is the kinda place where you just walk in and immediately trust everything the employees say, because you know they just KNOW. Rude!!! The workers in this place are so rude and unhelpful. I had heard this about the place being only for locals-that isn't a joke.

Lets start with the good: Starrs offers a decent selection of wine, and spirits. They have an okay selection of beer, though as a craft beer snob I wish they offered more. It does seem however their main focus is wine and spirits, thus these are usually the only things I go in for. They do also offer a variety of grocery items, and meats and cheeses via their delicatessen. The bad part of Starrs is the vibe and the service. While I've never been treated rudely here, the staff just is a bit cold and uninviting. I've witnessed on occasion people carrying on conversation with staff (possibly the owner?) and it leaves me with the impression that they are friendly with the regulars in the neighborhood, and don't care to put the same effort into interaction with other customers. The vibe of the place strikes me as a tad snobby. Like I don't belong here if I'm not aerating my wine prior to drinking it. Thus, I'll go here on my way home from work as its directly on the way, but will not otherwise go out of my way to stop in. read more

Bought a large lobster tail. Almost a whole pound @$65/lb. It was covered in ice and I wonder how much that added to the weight. I hope it's good! Also bought a Heirloom tomato with a proud price on it. If you grow tomatoes you know refrigeration makes them mushy. They don't know this. Been a customer for some time. Figured it was time to give some credit where credit is due. For years, Starrs has been our go to place for easily the best in-house roasted coffee in STL, bar none. Bud's Dark - our fav - rocks, if you're into dark roast. And their decaf rivals any others out there. Plus their prices are better than anyone in town. Aside from the coffee, their fresh fish flown in every Friday can't be beat. You just have to get there reasonably quick or it sells out. Plus the price is right! Speaking of which, the prime strip steaks are the best in town and at the same price or less than Schnucks choice. They cut them off the whole piece right there and trim them nicely. Racks of lamb are equally tasty. Prepared foods also well worth checking out. Pizzas rock. Lasagna is quite good as well. Big selection of cheese and specialty foods. Both Bud Starr and John Nash are very good at recommending wine too. Tell them what characteristics and price point you're looking for and they can point you in the right direction. Starr's has made some very big, positive strides the past couple years. If you haven't visited in a while you should definitely check them out. Yes, as some reviewers have pointed out, occasionally the service could be better, but its improved dramatically the past year or so and it's something I can tell they've really worked on. Today was my first visit to Starrs. I have driven by numerous times and never gave it any thought. We had lunch Fozzie's across the street and thought this would be a great opportunity to check it out. Loved the beer selection, it was comprised of micro brews and craft beers. There was not one A-B, Miller's or Coors's product to be seen. There selection of wine was wide and varied, but I have seen better prices. With New Year's Eve approaching, their selection of champagne was the best I've seen in a single store and the prices were reasonable. Customer Service was good considering the fact they had two sales representatives for distributors in the store. They bounced back and forth between customers and the reps. They made sure our needs and questions were answered. I'll be back they had one of my favorite micro beers that is hard to find and it's a secret ingredient in some of my recipes. read more

My boyfriend and I collect whiskey and have fun hunting down allocated bottles. We made a special trip here on my boyfriend's birthday because of a bottle we saw listed on their website for sale. Let me preface this review by saying I'm not mad because we didn't get a bottle we were after, that's the name of the game with allocated whiskey, I'm mad because we were treated terrible. While browsing their whiskey selection, a woman came up and asked if we needed any help. My boyfriend said we were just browsing, and then asked if there was anything that wasn't on the shelf because there was quite a bit advertised online. He mentioned that he was looking for a special bottle since it was his birthday. She immediately snapped at us saying they have allocated bottles, but they're for their regular customers. He said he totally understood, and asked about Booker's, noticing an empty box nearby. She condescendingly responded with a "you want to buy that? That's a $95 bottle" as if it was clear we couldn't afford it. He said we already owned it, but it's cool to hear they get it. She walked away annoyed after that, not offering any other assistance. We ended up leaving without buying several other bottles (not allocated, they were on the shelf, we weren't just there to score an allocated bottle) we picked out because of that interaction. I get it, COVID has been rough and I'm sure it's beyond annoying to be constantly asked about allocated bottles. If they had bottles that were already spoken for, that's totally fine, but it's unnecessary to treat us like garbage. If you're going to treat us like crap, why would we want to become regular customers? Also, if being asked about allocated bottles annoys you to the point you're going to be rude to people, might be a good idea to not advertise them on your website. The experience put a total damper on my boyfriend's birthday and we won't be back. read more

Splendid little shop!! I just recently discovered Starr's when a friend mentioned the fresh fish they have Friday and Saturday. Now I am going there every week. The fish is amazing. They always have Faroe Island farmed salmon from Canada (the best at a good price) and add to that (in season) the most amazing halibut, swordfish, black cod, flounder, ahi tuna, U-10 dry pack scallops, mussels from PEI, and finer prime beef cuts. The fish tastes like it was just pulled in from the west coast or Alaska. Coastal fresh for the Midwest. Highly recommended. They also have the most incredible cheeses and they know all about each one. They make great buying choices. You can talk and taste and buy forever. Lots of other nosh items, cold cuts, olives etc. They have all the standard bottles of everything at really pretty good prices. The people are friendly and helpful and very knowledgeable. Anyway, I am embarrassed that it has taken this long, but I am now a big big fan and urge you to give it a try. Go there and get on their emailing list. 2-4 emails a week! Terrible. If I could give zero stars, I would. I'm not sure what happened in the 2 years since I've last visited, but this place has gone downhill, service-wise. I have a really hard time finding ginger liqueur, but I remembered from the past that Starrs has always had it in stock, so I decided to swing by after work. I walked in, and there were at least 3 employees there -- I could hear them talking, but I couldn't see any of them. Surely one of them must have heard me walk through the door (I was wearing heels that clicked as I walked), but no one came around to greet me or ask if I needed help finding anything. No one. I walked through each aisle, checking out the goods. Turns out that Starrs not only has a great selection of wine and spirits, they sell little things like crackers, jams, and they even have a cheese counter. I walked over to the cheese counter. I really came to Starrs just for ginger liqueur, but now that I was staring at the cheese, I was hungry for brie. There was a guy behind the counter, busy working on something. I'm not sure what. Anyway, I tried to catch his eye and get his attention, but he ignored me. After a few minutes, I walked away. Again, the employees walked through the store, and walked past me, completely ignoring me as I browsed through the store. I was the only customer in the store. They weren't busy. I felt myself getting angrier and angrier, and honestly, if I knew of another local place that sold ginger liqueur (anyone know of any places?) I would have left without purchasing anything. Anyway, I found what I needed, and I walked up to the checkout counter and paid. The cashier may have said 2 words to me. Either EVERYONE working in the store that day were in really bad moods, or this is just par for the course at Starrs. I have a hard time believing that it's the former. I won't be back. read more

Was in a pinch for a unique beer that Starrs allegedly carries, so I call the store at 7:55 p.m. on a Wednesday to make sure they were open. An employee answers and says they'll be open until 8:30. Great! I show up at the entrance 15 minutes later at 8:10 and the doors are locked, 20 minutes before the guy said they'd be closed. Confused, I phone Starrs again, and the guy tells me that he's closing the shop early..."Not enough business," he says apathetically. "Sorry." Pretty unreliable and really annoying. Not only is this place one of the best liquor distributors in the area, it also boasts a really good restaurant. The place started off as simply another market for beer, spirits, but specialized in wine. It has every wine you can think of, and if for some reason it doesn't, talk to Bud Starr the owner, he will make sure it gets in. The restaurant was recently added, and serves great seafood and steak dishes. The coolest part is that when you go to dinner the drink list is anything in the store. This review only pertains to the alcohol selection, not the food or the restaurant: Straight off the bat I will openly admit that I know very little about alcohol, especially wine. The only wine I know a teeny tiny bit about is Spanish wine, and that's just because I lived in Spain a couple years ago and if I didn't drink wine there, they would have probably kicked me out of the country. Last week, I was on a specific mission to find some Tío Pepe Sherry. I was planning on taking it to a book club I was going to. The main character was from southern Spain (where I lived - represent!), so I figured what better way to show my nerdiness than to bring a unique wine from that region. I had also been to the Tío Pepe bodega in Jerez de la Frontera, so I thought it'd would be pretty rad to find some from that bodega (and I knew that the sherry there was good). I assumed I wouldn't be able to find Tío Pepe Sherry this side of the Pacific, but a google search showed me that they carried it at Starrs! So off I went. At first when I got to the store, I was confused because I couldn't find any sherry in the Spain section. But when I asked if they carried it, I was politely pointed to the Sherry section - ooooooh, nice! A whole section. They did, in fact, have some Tío Pepe Fino Sherry. I snatched the second to the last bottle, had a nice conversation about Spain with the two guys working there, and off I went absolutely thrilled that I had not only found some sherry, but also had discovered such a fabulous store! I will absolutely be coming back to try out different wines & beers...they have an amazing selection! read more

Best beer and wine selection in St. Louis. No, it's not cheap, this is not some discount package store. This is where you go when you are looking for good beer, good wine, or good spirits and you are ready and willing to pay full price for the privilege of drinking such alcohol. I usually hit this place around the holidays when I know I am going to be having a ton of people in my home. Since I hate to force people to drink Bud Select, I like to come here to get a selection of higher end and more unique beers. Also, the wine selection is excellent. If you are like I am and you truly have no clue about whether or not a wine is good, don't worry, the people working can school you on what you are looking for. Just be firm if you don't want to spend a boatload on one bottle. I have never eaten the restaurant, but people tell me it's fantastic. Until then, I can safely say this is the best beer and wine selection in St. Louis. read more

I live around the corner and go to Starrs often out of proximity so this review has been in the making for three years now. The liquor, beer, and wine selection at Starrs is very good (4 Stars), I always find beers from all over that I have never tried. They have a "bargain" selection for wine and beer where you can pick up some good buys. Outside of this selection you wouldn't go to Starrs because they have the cheapest prices in town, you'd go because they have an above average selection in Richmond Heights. Their service is much like their variety (a wide selection, 2 stars), sometimes I go in and get great recommendations, quick service and leave happy. Many other times I have walked in to a barren store with no one to be found and have to wait for a few minutes while the staff gets it together to take my money. 40% of the time the cashier doesn't seem to know the price which is always fun. This is a family owned business and it shows, some streamlining to their model would do them a lot of good. Bottom line: I go here because its close, if I lived further away, I would go to the next closest liquor store. I don't see much setting them apart for other places. read more

For sheer selection and knowledge, Starr's is always a sure bet. I've often found myself intoxicated (no pun intended) by a liqueur I've tried in another city, only to discover St. Louis didn't have it anywhere. Years ago when Tanqueray Ten came out, it was all the rage in Chicago, but no store in St. Louis sold it at that point - except Starr's. Their shelves were stocked full. I also go to them because I know they'll have obscure things that I might not necessarily be looking for, but I want to add to my repertoire. They've got several options for lemoncello, which is always nice, and they have a nice selection of tiny bottles so I can try things before investing in big bottles. I've never tried their prepared foods, but I love browsing the store. Lots of interesting goodies, perfect accompaniments to wine or cocktails. read more

I found Starrs online looking for a very specific brand of Pinot Noir. There are many nice wine stores in the city and they were the only ones to carry it. I came by and Bud was so helpful and toured me around the entire store as it was my first time there. I love buying from locally owned businesses and you can tell he really cares about his business and the people who buy from him. I was on a hunt for Limoncello and Starrs happened to carry it!! We walked in 2 min to closing and the owner did not rush us at all. He helped us find what we need and also gave us a few recommendations. He was a genuinely nice man and seemed to know what he was talking about. I was in an out within a few minutes but those few minutes left a good impression on me. I deduct one star because they do close a 9pm which is kind of early. I also want to add that the owner of Starrs is also the owner of the Smokehouse next door, which just recently opened in Nov.
