We had Vonderhaar come out in 2024 in the Spring to turn our gas fireplace into a woodburning. Growing up with a wood burning fireplace I knew how to build a fire. However, every time I did the house would be filled with smoke. Frustrated, I stopped trying. Now that it is beginning to get cold and having gatherings in our home, I once again wanted to burn the fireplace...same thing, smoke. So frustrated I called Vonderhaar and they sent Colin out to check on it. He was FANTASTIC! Stayed here for almost 2 hours testing our draft, showing me how to warm the box up, for how long, and what wood to use, and how to actually place the wood in the fireplace stacked. Two and a half weeks later I have heard nothing. I try to call and after being on hold for a half hour I decide to send an email. Three days later I get a single sentence response saying they will send Evan a quick message. No apologies for delay, no nothing! Several days later still nothing! Do not use these people!!! Called them to service our gas fireplace...$99 later he said it was the valve which was no longer available. Said $9-12000 to replace the fireplace. I went on the internet and found the valve in less than 30 minutes fo about $250. I had a plumber install it for $150. These people are not trustworthy read more

We live on the outlying area of their service circle. I tried three different times over the course of a year to get them to come give us a quote for purchasing a Harmon stove. Three different times we were called to reschedule. Twice the day before the scheduled appointment. The owner is apparently the only one to do the quotes. My wife and I have taken the hour drive north to the store several times. Why can't he do the same? We have contacted Harmon Stoves and logged a complaint. We have been put in contact with the next closest dealership for the stoves. Poor business practices with Vonderhaar........ read more

Had the owner come out to measure. Talked about refacing the brick but decided against it and told him so. Sent them the FULL amount to get the project started and had a reciept marked "Paid in Full" on 11/4 with THEIR expectation of 4 to 6 weeks. Week 6 I email for an update. Their reply "We have not received the doors yet, but once we get an email notification that they are on the way we will call to get you scheduled". After another 4 weeks I email for an update. Their reply from the owners notes "Customer also mentioned he may do tile or stone over brick on hearth and wall.    Do not order doors because they will have to be remeasured if stone or tile is going to get done as it will change opening size.". I specifically told them there would be no brick work and to move forward. They performed absolutely NO followup whatdoever. Took my money and went silent. All communications were initiated by me. DO NOT DO BUSINESS with this company. read more

contracted 14 weeks ago for chimney water leak. sent "inspector" out and did not even look inside where water was coming in to basement..although I asked it be done...desperate. Went in June to ask when work could be done. I was told I am 54 on list. Went in July and also told I am 54th on list. Did get a call saying I am 31st. (all of this is recorded) on my phone. Seems like understaffed. May mean service whenever it happens is by a new and not qualified person. 1 star because 0 or minus not an option. Stay away. read more

Called them to do an estimate to repair some brickwork on our house. Said they would come out to look at it, but said they did not make appointments-- they would just show up. A couple if days later we happened to be home when they estimator showed up. The guy (Evan) was very laid back and up professional -- walked around the house with us, took photos and said he'd email an estimate -- he seemed more interested in selling us a chimney cap than doing the brickwork. The email with the estimate arrived the next day, but lacked some specific things we discussed -- it also required a 10% deposit abd a $250 penalty if we changed our mind and cancelled. It also did not have an estimated start or completion date for the work. We emailed them for a requote to include the missing items, but no response. BUYER BEWARE OF THIS COMPANY. read more

So I had someone come out from a different company [All Clean Chimney Sweep] for a "second opinion." Within a week of calling, the company was at my door. Wow, amazing, turns out you don't have to way 2 months for someone to clean your chimney. The guys walked right in and got to work with no fuss. I mean, my chimney was dirty, but there was no, "Wow, this is so bad, we're going to have to charge you 15x the price of a normal chimney sweep to get this done." Within 30 minutes they were done. Oh, and they stopped to tell me my damper had gotten off it's track, but they had fixed it and we were good to go. No mention of purchasing a new damper. It was a simple fix FOR FREE. I can tell you they've earned a customer for life, unlike Vonderhaar. I mean, honestly I don't blame Vonderhaar for playing me for a sucker. I mean only a chump would wait 2 months for a chimney sweep and then pay $90 for an "inspection" without service. Lesson learned. But please, learn from my experience. Do not use these people. Please look up All Clean. They are legit, and the owner Clarence was honest, fair and great to work with. read more

Do not use this company . Tech came to check my fireplace after I heard a loud noise and the glass fell out . I was told my fireplace needed to be replaced . Owner came said it was a valve issue . he stood in my family room and called the manufacturer and told me they are no longer in business and was told can't use a valve from another company . He measured for a new fireplace . weeks later I received quote of 12,500 . Was told half the wall and entire fireplace would be torn out . A neighbor recommended I contact a company they used . The tech knew right away what the problem was . There was an issue with the glass and gasket . He replaced it. checked and cleaned FP , valve was totally fine . He also told me that the manufacturer for the valve is definitely still in business . The bill was 980.00 . vonderhaar is just interested in selling expensive fireplaces . They thought they could take advantage of an old , blonde lady ! read more

Bought a house several years ago with a gas fireplace. It was so ugly I hid it behind my entertainment center. Finally got time to visit the store to see what else I could put in there. Everyone in the office was very helpful. We set up an appointment for Mr Vonderhaar to visit my house. He was a great guy and answered all my questions. My twins and I picked a new unit. Brian came out installed the new fireplace, new tile and a mantel. It is stunning. My only regret is I waited so long to so this. I didn't even think to check reviews before calling Vonderhaar. I trusted the name... Mistake. I agreed to the $100 inspection fee that would be deducted from the final cost if I booked a job. The tech was nice; but, I had to keep explaining why he was at my house and what I was hoping to accomplish: cost to repair existing or install a new firebox. He kept assuming it was a done deal and I was going to move forward with something. He was pushing gas with a propane tank or pellets with some big cage. He wanted me to stop in their showroom and talk to someone about refacing the fireplace wall.. Again, I explained I just wanted a cost, if it's too expensive I'll stick the electric fireplace back in and call it a day. Electric insert was here when I moved in 15 years ago. He opened the flue and a huge, 15 year old, pile of debris fell out in a plume of soot. He flapped the flue a few times and the pile grew. He poked the pile and announced that "something is definitely nesting in there." He began to tell me how much work and how expensive what I wanted would be,. Said they would email an estimate. Collected his things and as he was exiting the room, looked at the big mess he was leaving for me to clean up and said "I hope there isn't anything dead in there." $100 and he didnt even clean up his mess... I got my rubber gloves, trash bag, and shop vac. Thankfully nothing dead was in there. read more

It seems that Vonderharr does not think much of their employees or customers. The tech that came to clean the fireplace was unable to get the grate back in and broke one of fire bricks, so they had to send out someone else to come and make things right. read more

Our gas fireplace wasn't working correctly and it was recommended that I call Vonderhaar. First, it was months before I could get an appointment. Once the repair person came, he diagnosed the problem and said he would get the part and call to set the next appointment. Again, it was more than a month before the next appointment and I had to call. The repair person came out and fixed the initial issue. Then, he noticed that the gas valve wasn't working correctly. He said I should call and tell one of the people at the office what was needed. The office called back the next day to tell me that the part/fireplace was obsolete and the part could not be obtained. When I asked about the fact that I just spent over $200 for the initial repair, I was told that they would credit me for it if I bought a new unit from them. I contacted the company that makes the fireplace, who, in turn, recommended a different company to fix the fireplace. The company that I contacted had no problem getting the part. As soon as the part comes in they will call me to set up the appointment. I would not use Vonderhaar Fireplaces again. read more

I called Vonderhar to get a second video inspection and estimate to repair damage to my chimney flue caused by an apparent chinney fire. The technician arrived over an hour late, then explained that he had gotten appointments mixed up and went to a later scheduled appointment in the area first. I was told that I would receive an estimate within a couple of days. A week passed - no estimate. I called and was told that the technician had not submitted his notes yet. After waiting several more days and hearing nothing from Vonderhaar, I called inquiring about the status of my estimate. I tried to explain that this was holding up settlement of my insurance claim and repair work on my fireplace. Still no estimate and the woman I spoke to could find no information on the report/estimate status. She asked me who I had spoken to earlier in the week, which I could not provide, as that person did not identify themselves. The woman I talked to was very rude, kept interrupting me, then told me "she didn't need all my negativity." Almost three weeks later I still have not received an estimate, despite being assured on multiple occassions that I would receive it " by the end of the day or tomorrow at the latest." I was/am totally dissatisfied by the lack of customer service. You can be assured Vonderhaar won't get the repair job even if they are the low bid. read more

Wish I had read the other dismal reviews before calling this company! I hired Vonderhaar on May 9, 2018 to clean my chimney and measure, build & replace the chase cover on my home's chimney which had rusted and was allowing rainwater to enter my home. I was told it would take "a couple weeks." About 4 weeks later and having heard nothing, I called (June 7) to ask when to expect installation and was told to expect it the following week. On June 18 and still having seen no one nor having been told anything, I called again. They acted confused and promised they would check where my cover was and would "call me right back." They never did. On June 19, I called again and was told that for some unexplained reason they still did not have my cover nor did they know why but that they would - yeah, you guessed it - CALL me right back. Two days later and today (June 21 at 3PM ) it is POURING rain (which is entering my home) and having again not been called back, I called them again and yeah - they still cannot even explain what is going one but PROMISED they would CALL ME BACK IN A HALF HOUR! It is now 3:30 as I write this, the promised half hour has passed and my phone has once again NOT rung! And the rain keeps running into my home. Do NOT. I repeat, DO NOT, hire this company for anything! read more

Called and scheduled appt - someone came out, didn't have a ladder but recommended a clean, cap and repair of a void based on ground level inspection. Said he'd be back with a ladder to complete inspection and would check if they had the size cap we needed to put on at same time... never came back. Got an invoice for an inspection that was never completed, called, got voided and rescheduled someone else to come back out and finish the inspection. Second person came out, this time with a ladder, and recommended clean, cap and liner. Same thing - said they'd be back with the cap and never came back, only this time charged for the inspection AND all the work and parts! Called again, they voided the invoice and now we have a bird in our chimney that could have been avoided if they'd actually completed either of the two times they scoped the job. I would not recommend Vonderhaar to anyone. We had them out for a chimney rebuild due to a cracked crown. We picked Vonderhaar because their quote was lower than the others we had received. However, in the end we were out much more money, time, stress, and frustration than I would want anyone else to have to go through. They caused damage to our roof that led to multiple leaks in our house. They did flashing incorrectly and rather than simply re-doing it, they did a poor repair job that had to be re-done by another company. They dropped debris into our flu vent, which caused it to be clogged. This led to damage of our furnace and hot water heater plus carbon monoxide was backing up into our house. They took zero responsibility for anything and tried to place the blame elsewhere multiple times. Greg was very unprofessional and even used profanity towards my husband. I understand that not every job goes exactly as planned, but the lack of acceptance of responsibility shown by the company as a whole was appalling. In the end we had to have multiple other companies out to fix the issues Vonderhaar caused. I will say that Randall was very nice and tried to help smooth things over, but we had already had too many issues by the time he was employed by Vonderhaar. Look elsewhere for chimney work and definitely don't use them for any roofing work! read more

DO NOT USE. Our fireplace stopped working at the end of winter. We had them come to do an inspection. $189 later they said our fireplace was unfixable and we would have to get a new gas insert at the tune of $1000 (or more, depending on what you wanted). I waited until now to get quotes from other companies. Ended up going with Bromwall who was $700 and could install within the week. They are here now and as they took it out said it would have been an easy fix to replace the gas line that was in the fireplace (it was snapped and that is why it didn't work). Although the fireplace grate was rusted, it could have been fixed with a simple gas line. Since I had already paid for the work, we are having it replaced, but am livid that we could have had an easy inexpensive fix, but I relied on their inspection. I will never use them and hope other folks read this and don't use them. We even waited for the "expert" Michael Hooser to do the inspection since I was told he was the one who trains everyone else. If that is the service you get from the expert, I can only imagine the others are worse. read more

We hired Vonderhaar to inspect and clean our fireplace. Needless to say, we wasted $200. The tech performed an inspection and wrote up a report on the condition of our fireplace. Then he proceeded to clean the chimney. After about 20 minutes said he was finished and packed up to leave. A few days later we realized a fuse was blown on the outlet he was using. Strange but didn't think anything of it. Then after giving us an outrageous quote to repair our fireplace, we called another company for a second opinion. This company made a comment about how dirty our fireplace was and that our damper was bent. After putting two and two together, we realized the Vonderhaar tech bent the damper and did not finish cleaning the fireplace because he blew a fuse! So instead of telling us there was a problem, he lied and said the job was finished. Just not a company I can trust or respect if they can't be honest with you. read more

I hired this Company to come and clean my fireplaces and provide quotes for any repairs that might be needed. That part of the job was great, but I was told one of my fireplaces needed a new burner. The technician was supposed to email me options with an estimate. The email never came. A month later I called and was told the tech never put his notes in the system and they have to contact him and would be emailing me. Two month's later I called again and was told the same thing but this time they would bypass him and go right to the estimator. I would be receiving a phone call. Three weeks later I have to call them again. I gave the girl the model number over the phone from the card that was in the fireplace, she was going to look up options and email me. A week later, still waiting, so I called again. I was greeted with the rudest woman, who started off drilling me for a name of the person I last spoke too. She was clearly irritated I couldn't remember the person's name. She then told me I needed to provide the model of the fireplace burner I have. When I told her I did that last week, I was answered with hostility that she didn't have the information and couldn't help me without it. I don't know what's going on there and why these people can't put notes in their system and why they are so unresponsive and rude to it's customers. Thinking back I think this woman is the same person I gave the model number to a week earlier. This woman should never be allowed to answer the phone or speak to customers. I hope the owner of this business or her supervisor sees this review. I decided to go with one of their competitors who actually acted like they wanted my business. read more
