This Vons is only convenient due to its proximity to work. They are ALWAYS never fully stocked. Half the time I shop here only half the items I need are on the shelves. So annoying. Their energy drinks that are refrigerated only offer 1 or 2 flavor options. I stopped drinking Monster because they only refrigerate the green can. Their Celcius fridge is the same story. They don't even have a potato chip aisle. They keep everything on the aisle end caps. The fruits and vegetables always seem a few days past their freshness and extremely overpriced. They also seem understaffed at the registers. I have never seen more than 1 cashier working a register. Luckily the self check moves quickly. Again, I probably would never return to this store if I didn't work around the corner. read more

I've only been here since March, but I've come to really dislike Vons in University City, on Governors Dr. I've been over charged several on sales items that were clearly marked on sale. This morning at 8:30am, 8 people were in line for self check out because no registers were open. It's a constant disappointment walking it that store and yes I do go elsewhere, but when you need a quick item or two it sometimes works that is if they even have that item. A lot of times they don't. And I guess management doesn't like working there either because they are not very friendly or helpful. Maybe they are as frustrated as their customers. Upper management needs to take a good hard look at this store. It's services a lot of seniors and one would think they would be better at their job helping those who need assistance. Oh well. Poor customer service. The woman behind the customer service was not friendly or professional. We live near the store so it was our grocery go to store. We have issue about our receipt and she gave us BS excuse about why we don't get the discount. First she said dairy is not included, but it was the fluid dairy not included (we have cheese) then she said because our phone number is not verified!??? It's not Ralph's which is my favorite grocery store. Von's has the highest prices and loads of empty shelves. I went to the small Vons on Genesee. It's the only one who has nice people working there. I was coupon shopping and there were only two things I needed and left! You can blame Albertson's for the Safeway (Vons) takeover. Pissed off employees having no management to guide them. I was a huge Safeway fan for decades, I was employed at their corporate office, but Albertson's swooped in and 3000 people lost their jobs in Northern California. Shop at Ralph's !!!!!! Sadly, after 20yrs of shopping here, I've lived most of the bad reviews. But the most unprofessional person must be the flower person who does not post prices, blames "others" when flowers ring up a different price than the one shown (after i selected flowers with a marked price to be safe), charges 20% for rewrapping a bouquet and overcharges in her math, says that ribbons are $2 on top of the 20%, and finally yells at me with anger when I point out that her math is wrong and she's overcharging and fees/prices should be clearly posted to avoid these situations. Customers should not be subjected to employees that clearly have no desire or skills to deal with the public. There is another lady that sometimes cares for the flower shop who is a delight and should really be the one responsible for it. Customers would enjoy that much more and receive proper customer service. read more

I went to Vons and got some fried chicken from their in-store "Signature Café." In fact, I chose "Chicken Meal Combo #1," which comes with: - a dehydrated fried chicken breast, with chewy (not crispy) fried coating, seasoned only with salt and bitter burnt pepper - a miniature-sized and similarly bone-dry fried chicken wing - a scoop of bland cole slaw ...and... - an unnecessary and cloyingly-sweet deli-style potato salad ...all for $5.99 with my Vons Club Card Membership! Regarding my "Summer of Fried Chicken," this review will need to suffice as a blanket review of ALL "supermarket" fried chicken variants in San Diego because, as far as I can tell, they are all disgusting, heat-lamped garbage. Also, I'm NOT doing this again, dammit. Who actually buys supermarket fried chicken, anyway? Even if your excuse is that you're lazy and you have zero motivation to find the best fried chicken in your neighborhood, fast-food chicken joints like KFC and Church's are everywhere, and worth an extra 3 minutes of your time to get fried chicken that merely marginally sucks versus fried chicken that is a stringy, chalky lost cause. Not to mention that a similar fried chicken combo meal at KFC or Church's is approximately $1.50 less once you add a soft-drink. As far as the grocery-shopping experience at this Vons location? Also a failing grade, unfortunately. Vons stores everywhere are notoriously understaffed, but this tiny location is one of the worst Vons I've been to in that I ALWAYS need to wait in a long check-out line, regardless of time of day or day of week. Too many small, dirty dogs! Love dogs, but dont want your pets in my grocery store. This store fails to address the fact that many people bring their small pets into the store. NOT service animals, trained to perform a function, but small, dirty, terriers or other mutts. This is a unhygienic! Staff don't enforce the ADA rules. Instead we saw one staff member pet, coo and gush over someones pet in the cart. Seriously?! Don't touch my food (to scan it) after you have been petting a visibly dirty dog. Another lady had her overly energetic pit bull in the store. She was NOT able to stop the dog from jumping on people in the produce section. That is NOT a service dog; true service dogs do not go spastic and jump on people. Because store management fails to address the issue, we will shop elsewhere. Probably one of the worst customer service experiences I've had. I normally use self-checkout, but this Vons doesn't have one. I had my stuff rung up by a woman and the entire time she did not so much as look at me or acknowledge me. She was speaking to someone else the entire time. I don't mind when checkout people talk to other people, but she literally ignored me. When I grabbed my stuff to go I said thank you and she still ignored me. I know it's a small thing, but have some basic humanly decency and acknowledge me, please. Even a nod would have sufficed. Produce selection is terrible: the produce is in poor condition, it's overpriced, and very small selection. Plus, they're often out of stock on things (not just produce, but the whole store). The frozen food section was closed for a few weeks. Like: empty freezers. No signage explaining what was going on or when it might re-open. The employees are neither knowledgeable nor friendly. I tried to buy a sad-looking zucchini: the cashier didn't know what it was or how to ring it up, and so charged me for some fancy "boutique squash" even though I explained that the pricing was incorrect. Also, they're chronically short-staffed. Check-out line wraps around the store, so you can hardly get from aisle to aisle. The worst Von's ever! The shelves are barely stocked. There is ALWAYS a long line and usually only one cashier. Today several dairy products were on the shelf with sell by dates that were over two weeks expired. One young male cashier at cow here (Turkish?) is always kind. He is the kind of person you hope to have in front of you after a weary day with sick kids. One young male butcher is also very helpful and personable. As for the rest of the staff I've encountered over the past few years they are mostly gruff and/or unpleasant. I am always the one who greets them. Really?? Also don't approach the cashier with your three-item basket in hand 17 seconds after the clock turned 12:00, at closing. When Sprouts is closed, I will be driving out of my neighborhood and into Clairemont or will go to Ralph's La Jolla where they are kind to customers and are open 24/7. Oh ghetto Vons....that's what my friends and I refer to this Vons as - those who know it by this name need not even say "The Vons on Governor" to have it be understood. Unfortunately this is my neighborhood Vons and where I go for "basis quick shops." Yes, they underwent a HUGE renovation - Huge as in, not really. But what can they do with the space I suppose. The selection sucks but they have the basics. Ya know, milk, eggs, bread, maybe 5 kinds of cereal, limp celery. And really, thats all thats important right? They have a deli, yes. I've gotten sandwiches there a few times and waited in line like 30 mins to get helped during the "lunch rush", i.e. with 3 other people there. The customer service is great other than the deli - nice people who do their job well. But I never do my major shopping here - I go down to Regents Vons for that. They do have a few unique things that warrant an extra star: Movie Rental Kiosk which is usually always available - those things rock, I'm never going to a video store again! Mini shopping carts. I havent seen these at any other Vons - you may know a similar device at henrys but that's just a basket holder, this actually has a lower area for stuff. They probably caught on that people only shop here for small purchases that don't need a huge cart but we are all too lazy to carry a basket. The grocery store is still not the smallest store - I believe that honor goes to the Alberton's in the Bird Rock area (on Turquoise?) what else can I say...but poor ghetto vons... read more

Some shelves weren't restocked after people had bought what was there. The staff walking around weren't that helpful/ didn't acknowledge your presence or ask if you needed help. First, its a small Vons so selections aren't always great or available. And its a bit cramped with smallish aisles. Its okay if you need to pickup something quickly (AND its a brand or item they stock!!), but for a weekly run or big meal you're much better off at the UTC or Clairemont Square locations. While Costco is the #1 store on my list for... well everything... Von's is the #1 on my list for everyday groceries. This Von's however fails to meet my expectations. There have been many instances where I am on my way home from work, ready to cook something and just want to go in, get a few things (sometimes just one thing) and get out. What ends up happening is one of the following: 1) they're out of stock of the item and because every department has closed except the front end, no luck of getting the object of my obsession. 2) the line is 10 people long and I'm buying 1 item. I remember when i was a wee little lad that they had this saying, "Three's a crowd" which meant that if you had more than 3 people in line, they would open up another register. Apparently this Von's missed that memo and they just don't do it that much. Luckily I live smack dab between two different von's so I can go to the other. I guess this one's just more family oriented (I can tell by the hours of the store) compared to the other one which is more student oriented. read more

I understand the idea behind the long line that wraps around aisle 4 and beyond. Keep people distances from each other, make things more orderly, etc. I get it. I really do! I work in retail and I know firsthand shoping these post-COVID is different than before. But when it take 45 minutes to run in and grab a bottle of oil or a carton of eggs, that is ridiculous! How about opening another check stand? How about a smile from the checker? Or a simple greeting would even do!!! I suppose gone are the days of courteous, quick stops at your local grocery! I love this Vons. It's smaller so it's perfect for this little community. It has just what you need. They keep it always stocked well. Things have prices slashed to get rid of over stock regularly. I've used the deli for catering for my work. They always came thru on time and great quality! Platters serving 100 people. The employees are very friendly! Always asked if you found what you were looking for? Angela always would go out of her way to wave and say hi honey! Years of shopping you start remembering each others faces. I also like Paul the supervisor. He is good at his job. Always makes sure the lines keep moving. He always steps in to make sure things are right on prices. Quick to fix any issues. I have also seen him be very sympathetic, caring, and passionate towards customers and not so lucky community members. Even the stocking guy is really helpful late at night. I love the Vons app to get my savings! read more
