Like to wait in long lines to pay high prices for your groceries during non-peak hours on a Friday? If so, go to Vons in Mira Mesa. Even the express checkout and self checkout lines are long - and grocery prices are higher than ever. Part of the problem is fewer grocery stores in Mira Mesa. Back in the 90s Mira Mesa had a Vons, Ralph's, IGA, and Lucky. Now the only major chain represented is Vons, unless you include the more specialized Smart & Final, ALDI, and all the Asian stores. Costco rapidly moves more customers with more purchases through their checkout lines. That is why I rarely shop at our neighborhood Vons. read more

As usual, vons never ceases to disappoint. Got there 3 minutes before closing time and the staff says they're closed. Don't list yourself as open until 12 then; it's that simple. Maybe if the higher ups actually hired more than one cashier past 10pm, they wouldn't have a 20 person line backing them up so they'd feel the need to close early. The actual items here are good, place is clean, but the management is bar none the worst i've ever experienced. read more

I am handicapped and frequently use home delivery with something called Fresh Pass. When I joined they offered a $5 monthly credit off of pickup and delivery. After fighting their app for an hour and 2 calls to customer service, I found out that no longer applies to delivery. Never received notice of the change. Their app is extremely frustrating to use. When entering my order for delivery it changes back to pickup. If you don't remember to check, you have to cancel the order and renter everything. Von's prices are high and i have had several problems with their orders. Will be changing to another store. read more

WORST baggers with one exception: Deano. Almost every time one of the baggers bags my groceries, something gets ruined. Today it was carelessly packed blueberries. The plastic carton came open and I was left with about 30% of my berries squished at the bottom of my bag. I asked for the gentleman to use extra, Vons, bags if I hadn't brought enough of my own so my bags wouldn't be too heavy. He said "We'll see" and crowded all my things into the bags I brought. Bags were quite heavy and, as I mentioned, I had ruined berries. I've had bread at the bottom of my bags with canned goods or heavy produce on top, broken eggs from the carton coming open. Almost every time I don't bag things myself, I'll end up with something damaged or ruined. PLEASE train them. read more

Shopped the Mira Mesa Vons two times in last couple of weeks and both times I did not get all my digital coupon savings. Had to call and get them to credit me for the money I should have saved. The person I spoke to on the phone the second time told me if there is a discrepancy I need to call to get my account credited. I never did see the credit from my first call and not shopped again yet to see if I get the latest one. Don't know about anyone else but I don't have time (nor should I have to) to go through my receipt line by line every time I shop to make sure I'm getting my discounts. The NUMBERED Parking Spots such as 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, and 6 should be for the DriveUp & Go customers only. The In-Store pickup customers should park in regular parking spots. What is the purpose of DriveUp & Go parking spots when the vehicles that are parked there have NO drivers because the drivers are inside the store shopping or picking up online order? All vehicles in the DriveUp & Go must have a driver in them waiting for the order because it is a DRIVE UP & GO not a park and pickup nor park and shop. The REAL DriveUp & Go customers have no place to park on the numbered spots because they are taken by regular shoppers and in-store pickup shoppers. The numbered parking spot is connected to the app so the SIGN should clearly say DRIVEUP & GO customers ONLY for those parking spots !!!!! read more

Never order pick delivery from this location. They are always late preparing your order and always asking to replace an item. What type of service are they doing her Target and Walmart gets the pick service right. Not only, I ask to refund because they are 3 hrs late. They stated it will take 5-7 days for refund and guess what after 10 days, the refund was never been processed. I charged back this fee and do not never spend your money here because the experience is a waste of time. read more

Grocery shopping is really not my favorite thing to do but I have to tell you about a certain employee, Jay Jay, that ALWAYS puts a smile on my face. He is courteous, funny, helpful & knowledgeable but his demeanor towards customers, is not phony. I see him in the parking lot gathering wagons, meanwhile skipping & singing as he does his job. When he bags groceries he always makes conversation & ALWAYS has a SMILE on his countenance. It's a store that has almost everything you're looking for. Would give zero stars if I could. Literally waited about 30 min or longer for someone at the seafood and meat department and asked multiple employees to help. They kept saying that they couldn't locate the person and then he was on his break. we kept waiting and he still didn't come. Talked to more employees and only one employee seemed to care. He was a bald man with glasses. Aside from him, nobody cared and clearly their staff is taking longer lunch breaks unless he quit his job. No sign on the counter when he was returning or anything. And NOBODY else could've just weighed some seafood and meat and slap a price tag on it?? No other employees trained to do that?? Extremely poor service. read more

I had a very bad experience with Santiago as my cashier today; the worst ever experience. I see Santiago on a couple bad reviews on here, I assume the complaint I filed and this review will be fruitless like the others as he has been doing this for years. Today, while waiting in line the gentleman in front of me was kind enough to reach for a divider to put behind his food (while holding a baby) and the cashier (Santiago) moved it out of his reach right before he could grab it. I then went to pick it up and Santiago literally snatched off up the divider and shouted aggressively at me "I NEED IT FOR MY OVERFLOW", whatever that means. There were 4 other closed check stands including the one directly behind him where he could grab extra dividers; this is besides the point. It was clear that Santiago wanted to be confrontational and aggressive with customers today. Never have I ever experienced this type of attitude from my 40 years of shopping at both Vons and Safeway. Santiago then proceeded to literally throw my food items down to the end where the bagger was, with some items falling off the platform. Santiago was very short, did not answer my toddler kids when they asked for stickers, simply ignoring them. At the very end of the transaction, Santiago threw away my receipt without asking if I wanted it. I made him un-wrinkle the receipt and give it to me. Santiago has no business in a customer facing role for Vons or anywhere else, he clearly hates his job and wishes he was doing something else. He is aggressive and confrontational, it is only a matter of time before a confrontation escalates with the wrong customer. I will no longer be shopping at the Mira Mesa Vons location on Mira Mesa Blvd. If I didn't have my kids with me and it was worth my time, Santiago would have been taken outside to get an attitude adjustment and some straightening out. read more

I've been in 3 separate times the past 2 weeks and every. single. time. i've gone in i needed help finding something which is absolutely not the issue. it's that i go back and forth across the store 3 different times trying to find someone and there's not a single person to be found to help. Just today i went in for 2 things. again i couldn't find an item and all of a sudden every single employee has disappeared. It's quite annoying then when you do see them they're all having conversations at the front of the store. Will definitely be going to target across the street from now on. read more

This Vons is a mess! They almost never have more than one or two checkers working. The cashiers are too busy talking to one another to greet you. They might come up for air to ask for your payment. No matter what time of day you shop the aisles and filled with pallets of boxes. Prepackaged produce is quite often out of date. Store is dirty. If you are getting anything from the deli or bakery be prepared to wait and wait. The deli employees are often huddled in the back laughing and having a great time. If you stand there long enough they will eventually come out to assist you. They move slower than turtles. There is no one in the bakery quite frequently so if you need something from the case you have to go to customer service and ask them to call to come and assist. He prepared to wait and wait. I actually had to go to customer service twice before someone came to help me. The cart corral outside the front door often has very few carts available for shoppers. Steer clear of the handheld grocery baskets. They are dirty, often wet with water or meat blood/juice. Brent (cashier) is the only bright spot. He seems to work early in the morning. He is always engaged, pleasant, efficient and goes out of his way to serve the customers. The rest of the cashiers and baggers couldn't care less. Sorry your time off request was denied, we all wish we had more sick time, so the store's changing to Albertsons (we don't care), and it's not our fault there is no sticker on the produce item we selected. read more

I have a soft spot for this grocery store, particularly because of the handful of employees that transform this place from just a regular grocery store into THEE neighborhood one.   Let's break down the grocery store with prices, customer service, and overall experience.   Prices - If you are not using the Vons app, you are doing Vons wrong. It is difficult to compete in the grocery store market in Mira Mesa as there are many Asian grocery stores alongside Aldi that are consistently offering the best deals on meat and produce. However, the Vons app does offer some competition. There are ALWAYS "coupons" that are exclusive to the app and not available in store - this is the KEY to shopping at Vons. You can get coupons on quite literally the entire store so please use the app when shopping here. There also is a $5 per pound meat section that I tend to get my meats from when I visit here.   Customer Service - I do not say this lightly, but Denise and JJ truly are pillars of the Mira Mesa community! Everyone, and I mean everyone, in Mira Mesa who frequents this plaza has seen the magic of JJ returning all of the carts to the cart parking lot. His smile, energy, positivity, and vibe is palpable and one-of-kind - I have never met someone like him, and he makes this trip worth it every single time. In all honesty, I visit Vons with the hopes of running into him so he can make day. On this note, Denise is the absolute best as well. I can have the longest day (I usually buy groceries at 10p after work) but Denise will always put me in a happy mood. Aside from the grocery store items, Denise is part of the experience that makes this Vons the best. She is always speaking so kindly, humorously, and warmly with everyone in her checkout line - no matter how busy or late it is. Denise and JJ are truly the best! I cannot emphasize this enough. They make me want to come here even though I know I can get some items at a better price at other locations - their ability to make the days of the customers is special and needs to be recognized.   Overall experience - I really do enjoy going to this Von's locations. Compared to Grocery Outlet, Aldi, H-Mart, Vinh Hung, and Seafood City, Von's is always stocked on "high-protein," "fat free," and "sugar free" options - this is probably why I go this Von's to supplement my grocery runs. The check-out lines can be long, but the workers do a great job. The store is always clean, stocked (even late at night), and has great employees. But do not forget - you MUST use the Von's app.   5/5 - special shoutout to Denise and JJ for making this Von's special. read more

This place is like night and day. Depending on which side of the store you go to, the experience is completely different. The folks are the flower shop side, outstanding. Always helpful even on super busy days. I even called back once to give those ladies props on how kick ass they are. The meat department, same. Always helpful and willing to answer questions or point out the stuff you're looking for. The bakery, deli, and customer service side, way different. Today, there was no one at the bakery. I waited for someone to show up to get me a fruit tart from behind the counter. No one to be found, no sign, and no button to call someone. I waited and even yelled out hello to see if someone was back there. So decided to go by the deli to ask them to call someone. Zero help. No one else around but he didn't bother to make a call or do anything. He just said go to customer service. I asked the customer service lady if she could get someone to help me in the bakery. Instead she went and got her supervisor. This guy tells me someone is there, she's probably helping someone else. I told him I had been waiting there and no one is helping anyone. He insisted she was gonna help me so I went back. After another 5 minutes with on one helping, I said forget that damn tart. I'm out. Next time I'm just gonna hit some other dessert place. There are plenty around here. I'm sure they will be more attentive and helpful. read more

Between clipping deals on the Vons app and $5 Fridays (now renamed something different), you can get super cheap groceries here. Produce (I typically buy all my tomatoes and mushrooms here) are always fresh. Meats and fish are high-quality. At least once a month they have a $5/lb sale on deveined shrimp, what a steal! Other items I buy are in the frozen aisle (french fries and tater tots typically) and there is good variety with always at least one brand on sale. Near the bakery and bathroom, there are some racks with almost-expiring breads from the bakery that are 1/2 price. This is where I usually grab buns if I decide to make burgers last-minute, or garlic bread if I decide on a pasta night. Service is always good the rare times I go to a regular check out line. Usually I use self check out. Parking is free in a large lot. There is NO pharmacy at this location. read more

Disappointing customer service. I had a cart with a few items. This check out girl didn't even greet me, too busy chatting with a friend across the aisle. Only words she spoke to me during the entire transaction were " 20's ok for my cash back" The gentleman Dylan was so friendly and polite, he said hello and asked me how my day was. Vons - Checker - Grocery Near Me - San Diego, California

What a sweet community store for the local neighborhood. This grocery store has been a long standing place for the community. The workers here are either recent high school graduates or seniors that are all local. They are courteous and nice, great customer interaction. They have a variety of items and the shelves are always stocked. The items are a little more expensive due to the inflation, but we pay for convenience. Recommendation for local grocery shop goers is to go during there sales and hit up every grocery store in the area. For example, check out grocery bargain outlet, then ALDI, then Sprouts, the 99ct store, then hit up Vons! I bet you would have found everything before hitting your last stop. I generally shop this Vons with no incidents. However, today, I'm not sure what was up with the operational manager, Carlos, but he was being extremely unprofessional and honestly a little bit racist in my opinion. I was at the self checkout and 2 older Asian women were trying to use a coupon on a soda deal. The deal did not go through so the manager came to "help." He asked if they had used it before and the woman said the other woman had but she hadn't. He then proceeds to take everything away and said well you've used it so you can use it again. She attempts to explain to him that the other woman did and he explains it's one per household. Sure, but 2 older women generally don't scream single household to me. He doesn't believe them and calls them a liar out loud for everyone to hear. That's already unprofessional. Then she's now getting a bit upset and he says "don't scream at me or I won't help you." As a 3rd party watching this unfold, she wasn't screaming at him. Did they both get louder? Sure, but wouldn't you when the manager starts making a scene calling you a liar? He was "shouting" at them at least double the volume as they were talking to him. They were older ladies, they weren't making a scene. He literally then walks away and is like I'm done with you. They have no choice after being humiliated but to pay for the rest of their groceries and leave. As someone who constantly has problems with the Vons app, it's not out of the ordinary for their app NOT to work and for the coupons to be loaded but not taken off the account at checkout. So here's where MY story begins. The next available self-checkout opens up. I am checking out and the same manager walks over to me and says you know, it's one per household. Ok sir, I explain to him that it's two different households. I am purchasing it for my dad because the locations in Los Angeles (where he lives) are sold out. I know because the day before I had just come from LA and couldn't find any of the products so when I saw them today at this store, I bought a few things for my dad as well. The manager says, well tell him to buy it at his own store in LA. Uh, what part of "sold out" did you not hear me just say. I also didn't realize that people who lived in different counties are only allowed to shop in their respective counties. He responds with, what are you going to do, ship it to him? Excuse me, but what LA to SD is a 2 hour drive. I've gone to LA twice this past week already and I'm going again this weekend. Does it matter how I plan to deliver it to him? ABSOLUTELY NOT. WHAT IS YOUR DEAL??? He then proceeds to say, if you buy them together you're the same household. Excuse me, do I need to start taking out my drivers license and showing you how NOT THE SAME HOUSEHOLD we are? Seriously. I didn't realize people of different households could NO LONGER shop together or they're considered one. I don't know what his deal is but the fact that those ladies were Asian, and then he started picking on me and I'm also Asian is too coincidental to me. While the other incident was unfolding I was just minding my own business. I don't know how he even became a manager with that unprofessional attitude. Did he wake up on the wrong side of the bed? Who knows. But you don't just start confronting your customers and start arguments with them because you feel like it. Absolutely unprofessional and inappropriate behavior from a manager. I mean these aren't free products but he's sure acting like we are trying to steal or scam the store. Please get off your high horse. read more

After the third bad experience, i.e. waiting in line for 10 minutes, and then having the cashier tell me she didn't have enough money in her machine to give me cash back, this is it. Giving it a 4 star because sometimes, the produce here aren't fresh. Also limited fruit selections. They can be a bit pricey too. They don't have much fresh meat selection. There's a water station outside where you can refill your gallons of water containers. The staff here are nice. They also accept EBT & WIC. read more
