1st time stopping here . I drive to Syracuse a few times a week and always looking for a new spot . I searched BBQ and this came up. Food is give it a 3 , price and service is give it a 5 . A cheap quick place to grab a sandwich. Looks like outdoor dining, windows to order from . I got the hot dog with the works , and the roast beef sandwich. Both were like $5 each . I love my condiments but the hot dog had so much stuff on it , the hot dog was lost somewhere in that pile . It was so soggy it was almost impossible to eat . The roast beef sandwich was the better of the two, I've had $15 sandwiches that's not as good , it's on a small burger bun with over an inch of meat and sauce , also a mess , but that's why it's $5 ! I was eating my cheeseburger and these people who were driving motorcycles and also knew one of the workers sat next to us. Hey were super rowdy and blew exhaust fumes into my food as I was eating. Love this little spot that's HUGE in the cny community! I paid 12 for the chili cheese dog and a cheeseburger and medium drink for 12 and it was phenomenal, the staff was also very clear when speaking and I could see that it definitely helps with the older customers treating them nicely. Voss's has nothing unique on the menu, pretty straight forward. The dogs are great my favorite is chili & onions on top. Pulled pork. Place was opened in the 1930s so it feels like cool history stopping by. It's seasonal and no inside seating, so the lines can get a bit long but they move. If you are driving through skip the fast food chains for a more authentic experience. read more

I used to live within 20 minutes from Voss, back in the day they were the go to place. I've heard lately, like most places prices are way up, size & service is down. Sad. Today was opening day !!! We must have hit the sweet spot in terms of time as we did not have to wait in a long line... the rain helped to but by the time we left the lot was full. For those from upstate NY you know Spring is here when Voss's opens. This is a your quintessential summer food stand. Each year they slap a fresh coat of paint and put the picnic tables out. I swear after waiting all winter the first meal at Voss's is like a five star gourmet meal. We had steak sandwiches and crinkle cut fries and they did not disappoint. Price did go up but seems all restaurants have had to keep up with the times. Cash is King here so make sure you bring cash or your ATM card as they only take cash. I have been going to Voss' for decades. But, I have noticed that in the past couple of years their food has declined in some ways. One of my largest complaints is (if you read these reviews) would you PLEASE put some BBQ sauce on your BBQs'?! While the meat is stacked on them, with very little sauce they are drier than dry. It doesn't get much better than Voss'. This place is like nothing else ive ever had anywhere. Sometimes I think people not from the area don't get it, but those from Utica know this is a staple. From the giant milk bottle on top, to the magnetic alphabet letters they give you to pickup your ready order with, this place is special. I highly recommend my favorites the Pork BBQ all the way (everything on it), the chili cheese fries with chopped cheese (for the love of god make sure you get the chopped cheese), the white hot all the way, any of their malts thick style (although pistachio is my fave), and the burgers arent bad either. Side note, if you get your order to go, the chili fries come in a bag... while this may madden some outsiders... it is part of the Voss experience and super good this way, trust me. Voss is a Utica classic. This place is only open during the summer and there Is usually a line when you get there but it's worth the wait. This is your all American food joint stuck in the 1960's . Their Mexidog all the way is my favorite along with their standard cheeseburgers with ketchup, mustard, onions. Milk shake I recommend vanilla thin. read more

Overpriced. Small portions. Nothing to write home about... are NEVER things you'll hear me say about Voss. A hometown staple; all the hype is worth it. Voss on Oriskany Boulevard (there is a second location inside the Utica Zoo) is generally busy. The wait for food isn't terribly long, but the wait to place your order can be. So although it looks like a place to grab a quick bite, if you only have a half hour lunch, you may be waiting in line for most of that half hour. However. The food is superb. You'll find variations on cheeseburgers, burgers and hot dogs. The milkshakes are excellent and come in thin and heavy, although why anyone would ever choose thin is beyond me. Buns are toasted, which oddly makes the meal. The crunch! You can't beat it. One order of fries may not be enough, so get two if you're hungry. There are picnic tables to sit and eat, and thankfully all of them have umbrellas. Parking is usually an issue, but only because you're coming in off a major street. My suggestion is to turn right off Oriskany (if you're headed east) onto the first street just past Voss. That way you can circle around the back near Club Monarch and avoid the heavy traffic. read more

Voss is the boss. I like this place a lot, it is simple and cheap with no frills. They are cash only and close during the winter. My only complaint is the parking is unorganized and atrocious at times. There are also a swarm of bees bothering you as you try to eat but where there's bbq, there's bugs so that's fair. Portions are small but so are the prices. I've only been a couple of times but looking forward to cruising more of the menu next season. read more

My thoughts after trying this place: "Voss All The Fuss About." The best way I can describe it is as a very overrated Sloppy Joe with a very long line. It was tiny and unsatisfying, yes it was cheap but so are lying politicians and that doesn't make them good, does it. This is a legend in this area, but for me, the legend died the minute I bit into it after waiting in line for what seemed like ages, but must have actually been ten minutes or so, on a beautiful summer day. I have yet to "get" Syracuse & Utica food, Upside Down Pizza & Riggies notwithstanding, but food is food, and even though this general region has a town named Liverpool (named after the best football team on earth), it just didn't do it for me. I will come back and give it another try sometime when I'm not in a hurry to get to a concert, and see if I like it more. But the girl I know from Liverpool, NY totally did. read more

Top a fist full of burgers, sliced BBQ and fries off with some orange pinapple hand scooped ice cream and you know your livin' buddy. Here visiting from Oregon. Food was pretty good.. got a bbq pork sandwich- pretty decent, could of used more sauce but it was good but small. Next got a chili dog- this was good. Quick service in Yorkville New York. Voss' is a seasonal quick serve restaurant with burgers, dogs, and bbq sandwiches. We went for dinner on a nice summer day. It was pretty busy for a Wednesday. I ordered the bbq pork sandwich with fries and a drink. The total came out to a little over six bucks which I thought was very reasonable. When I received my food I found out quickly why it was inexpensive as the portions were small. I ordered the sandwich all the way with onions sauce and pickles. The sandwich was bland overall and the sauce was just poured over unflavored dry pork. The fries were crinkle cut and unseasoned. In all just a mediocre experience, not sure what all the hubbub is about. read more

One of the locals brought me to Voss's because of my love of hot dogs and, I have to say, it was a fantastic place for lunch on a sunny afternoon. They were extremely busy but kept the line moving fast, serving many hungry patrons on a warm July day. They serve Zweigle's brand hot dogs, which are very delicious and made in nearby Rochester, NY. Love coming to voss! Fish fridays are the best! They have all the American burgers, hotdogs, chillis and fries that will have you coming back for more! They are also reasonable prices and I'd say it's much better than going to get your food at McDonald's or Burger King for they will surpass them! They also serve ice cream and it's much bigger and cheaper than Nikki doodles around the greater Utica area although Nikki doodles offers more variety than Voss, I can't complain about either. read more

This place is one of those places where you'll here the native rave about. It has been open since 1938, generations after generations have been going there so now it's a tradition and they are known for their chili dogs. I've pretty much tried everything on the menu. This place opens around April and closes in November. There is usually a long line, but the service is fast, so the line moves quickly. Food is very cheap. They also serve ice creams and I love their thick pistachio milk shakes. I recommend getting the chili dogs and fish sandwiches. Their BBQ sandwiches aren't that good.
