I used to work for the Savings Bank of Utica so I'm familiar with this restaurant but it's been about 15 years since I've eaten there. Last week for my anniversary I told my husband I wanted to take a ride and try it again. The same family has owned this since 1973 which is impressive! They have a hostess and I was selling her about my history with the place and that we had driven from Jordan, NY. She was very pleasant we were seated promptly and waiter came right over with menus. I decided to try a the Greek red wine and we had 2 appetizers. The hummus of the day (red pepper) and spanakopita. Both were delicious! For entrees I got the chicken & souvlaki platter and my husband the chicken florentine. Both entrees were served with a side salad which many places don't do anymore. I loved my entree but husband liked his but it was very rich with a lot of cheese. He did like my entree better so next time he will get what I ordered. We saved room for desert to share and I had a hard time choosing because everything sounded great. I choose the galaktoboureko (filo dough with a custard inside with a drizzle of honey). It was amazing along with 2 cups of Paul delima coffee was the perfect ending. The service was amazing throughout the time we were there. When the bill came the waiter informed us that the coffee and desert was on the house because it was our anniversary! I was not expecting this and it was such a nice thing for them to do. The food portions were not filling at all the lettuce looks like something small children will eat. It looks very thrown together. The portion sizes are tiny It was not what was expected. I did not expect the meat to be wrapped in aluminum foil. The presentation was horrible. I'm already annoyed just looking at the food. First time at this restaurant and was super excited .Spent $200 and it really was not good. The best was the Dolmades and they were not homemade. We got Saganaki and we are used to the at the table flame and it was baked and brought out. We asked for Taziki and it was just yogurt. I had the Baked Haddock and it was flavorless and semi cold. I asked for balsamic and oil and she gave me a bottle of balsamic. My husband and son got the Surf and Turf. It was decent but again no flavor, Definitely not going back. I was recommend to stop in at Symeon's for a meal by Utica's mayor's brother and they did not disappoint. The restaurant seemed to be pretty busy at 7pm on a Saturday night but they were able to sit me down quickly. Wasn't sure what to order so I asked the waiter and he pointed me to the Souvlaki and the Mousaka. Between the two, I opted to get the Souvlaki & pair it with some Grape Leaves (Dolmades). The grape leaves came out quickly and really flavorful. Followed by the Souvlaki, a bed of rice topped with greek skewer(s). We enjoy Greek food and have eaten here for over 15 years. We always felt that the food was pretty good. Last night, i found that the Calamari was so tough, it was almost inedible. The server graciously took it back and offered to replace it, but I declined because I didn't believe a second serving from the same batch of squid and cooked by the same person was likely to be any better. They took it off my bill, but the check for the dinner for two still came out over $100. The pastry crust on the stuffed baked haddock was very tough. So. overall I was disappointed. I order from Symeon's from time to time, but this time we decided to go for a sit-down dinner and I'm glad we did! Service was excellent and our server was great. There are a couple different dining areas; one feels more like a typical restaurant dining room and the other felt more diner-ish so the layout and vibe is a bit different than what I expected. I was an intern through Culinary Arts BOCES back in 2017 so this is a bit of an old review; but as I interned there, I brought my boyfriend at the time there for several dates since he'd never eaten there. He loved it. I was able to recommend different dishes that I knew were all prepared with care, love and hospitality. Things in the kitchen can always get a bit crazy and overwhelming so it was refreshing to see the back of the house was just as calm and collected as the front. Now; I've eaten there since more recently and still love and adore the food. Hospitality is heart warming and the owner loves to check in on everyone when he's there. Which seems to be more often than not; since he seems to be there every time I eat there! Highly recommend for the Greek-Utican experience. Good food, great service. read more

Awesome Greek! Came in for a nice family meal and as usual, Symeon's delivered. Great service, great food, and I really comfortable vibe as well. As you would expect - it has a Mediterranean feel. The only "drawback" is that the restaurant is kind of chopped up into different rooms. It doesn't interfere with anything, but it's noteworthy. Their food is fantastic. From appetizers to entrees to desserts - it's all great! One of their most interesting desserts is their baklava Ice Cream which is custom made for them. It's amazing; as was the baklava cheesecake. In fact, I think they have 3 or 4 baklava-based desserts, as you might expect from a phenomenal Greek place. Worked a 12 hr shift at the hospital, didn't eat all day and I was craving a fish fry for dinner. My friend recommended symeons fish fry. I haven't eaten here in awhile and I love their food so i was pretty pumped. They told me it would be 40 minutes but I was driving home from syracuse so it was perfect. $19 bucks for baked fish, rice and a side salad and when I got home I opened it and there was no rice and no extra tarter sauce which I asked for. I get it accidents happen but I was pretty annoyed with this. I called them and they offered me a $2.50 refund to my credit card because they were "closed". Seriously? The guy said "ok i'll make it $5". Sweeeeet. I never give bad reviews but i am super disappointed in this. read more

Symeons continues to be my favorite restaurant, as it always has been over the years, and I dont even live in the area anymore. Whenever I am home visiting this is one of my first stops. There are so many great things about this restaurant. From the moment you walk in the staff and atmosphere is very welcoming. There are many dining areas to accommodate large or small parties and a nicely sized parking lot. Even at peak times the wait is never too long. The waitstaff offers great service from start to finish of the meal. To start the meal we usually order their semi dry greek wine (forget the name) in a carafe. Their chicken avgolemono is my favorite app. Others that are excellent include the cold grape leaves, saganaki, and we enjoy the greek appetizer platter (cold). The complimentary pita breads that they bring to the table cannot be skipped! Yum! For main dishes I always get the pasticho, as I cannot get it at home. My dad always gets the Mousaka which I also love. In the past I have had the Psari sto filo (fish) and tried my moms chicken floretine with rice... all very delicious. To top off the perfect meal, is the baklava cheesecake. It is unique and amazing. Their rice pudding is also divine. At check out I usually grab some of their seasoning to take home, as I use it in a lot of my cooking. It is very strong so a little does a long way, try it! read more

Our large group of ten friends went to Symeon's while visiting Utica for a " GE reunion" . The food was great for all! We all loved the rice pilaf and I enjoyed my chicken kabobs. I also heard raves about the souvlakis (lamb, chicken and beef). There was a wide range of desserts which looked delicious, and of course the baklava was amazing! Christy delivered great service and told us where she had just seen some amazing October leaf colors. We would all definitely give this restaurant a 10/10!! read more

When I lived in Albany, I visited this place weekly usually on a Friday and I could never not order the Greek salad a huge plate of calamari. There wasn't much to do in the area so once we went twice in one day. I'm gonna drive back one of these years and get the same thing, but I've gotten more adventurous as time went on, so I'll get something else too. Dessert was great here too. We just love Symeons and wish we lived closer. Well, actually we wish we lived closer to Utica because of Symeons but not necessarily for the winter. Every time we go visit our sister we love going to Symeons for lunch or dinner. The food is always great and fresh. The calamari is nice and crisp and yummy. We love the grape leaves, Tzazki, gyros, and of course the souvlaki. Every time we have gone we have never been disappointed. The prices are fair and you get a lot of food for your money. My favorite part of Symeons since I don't live in the area is the Symeons Spice. Symeons ships their spice anywhere in the US. I use this spice on my eggs, pizza, marinades, salad dressing, and part of my dry rub. Symeons is very easy to deal with and we love getting the Symeons spice show up. From what I can tell the spice includes salt, pepper, oregano, garlic powder, and I think cayenne pepper. The spice has a bit of a kick and a little salty but I just use the Symeons spice only on grilling some meats. Sorry about the picture of the Symeons spice jar. We were the invited quests of our friend from New Hartford to join him for lunch at his favorite ethnic restaurant. Symeon's is as authentic Greek as you can get in Upstate, NY. The Tsoupelis family has been in business since 1973, The present location, since 1982, is the third in their history. Their success encouraged them to find a larger location than before. This place is big and has spaces for larger family luncheons or dinners. We were seated by the hostess and menus & water brought to the table. We started w/ the Tzatziki dip appetizer ($6.50) w/ veggies & bread-very fresh. Nine apps on the menu. We had some lunch specials - souvaki & chicken ka-bob served w/ rice pilaf ($10 each). Very good. These were second choices because they were out of their signature dish the Thracian chicken. Opa! I'll reserve further comment until our next visit, but we were disappointed after the recommendation by our friends. The third lunch was the moussaka ($16-only in dinner size) - excellent, perfectly balanced flavors. Overall a very good lunch value. Symeon's is not to be confused the ubiquitous Greek diners in the Northeast. This is an authentic Greek restaurant. Check out their menu. They sell their famous spice mix in the lobby. Open M-Th 11am-8pm, F-Sat 11am-9pm, Sun 12-8pm. Plenty of parking. They also offer family sized meals to go, takeout, & delivery. So a pretty good first impression. I have been living in Utica New York for the past 12 years and when we first got here I was told that Simeon's is the place to go. We first went to Simeon's shortly after settling in. The food was excellent and the service was great. Pricing was moderate, but not excessive because of the quality of service and the food. We've returned to Simeon's numerous times since we have been living in the area. The quality and service remained until approximately two years ago. The service is average at best. The food is still very good. The pricing has increased to the point where the value is not there any longer . Last Wednesday four of us dined at Symeon's. three of the meals were good, but mine was the worst I have ever had there. I had ordered the appetites platter. The fried eggplant was way overdone, the calamari was in big chunks, not in individual pieces very disappointed. We have eaten here many times, and enjoyed the food. I was disappointed in Symeons. I had heard really good things but our visit was a letdown. We started with a mixed appetizer that included calamari that was just one big ball all stuck together. To her credit, our server told us she had put in a new order for us but she didn't let us know until we had picked thru the big ball. The new order was a full size portion but by the time it arrived, the entrees were on its heels. The chicken dish my friend wanted was unavailable so she got a recommended replacement, I had moussaka and my other friend had salmon. My moussaka arrived, a bit charred around the edges in an au gratin dish with an under plate. Both friends said their food was good but both were lacking any kind of presentation as well. Perhaps the kitchen is suffering from doing too much takeout and has lost any sense of plating skills. My moussaka was so heavy on their special spice I could taste only oregano, the rest of the dish was lost under the heavy hand. I love moussaka but I could barely finish it. read more

This place is amazing. I came here while visiting a friend in Utica. At 5:30 on a Friday the place was packed, and for good reason! The fresh pita bread was incredible. We had calamari appetizer was great - loved the seasoning. The salad that came with my meal was awesome. I ordered the shrimp Porto Lago and it was cooked perfectly. Most of the locals ordered the Souvlaki, which also looked excellent. Very attentive staff and the owner was even out several times asking how everything was. Highly recommend! read more
