I have visited several cigar shops in the Washington DC area, this spot was on my list that I hadn't tried yet. At the moment, this is the oldest tobacconist shop in the nations's capital and the 3rd oldest continuously operating in the country. I was partly disappointed due to not carrying the cigar I was looking for (La Flor Dominicana Andalusian Bull) and there is no smoking allowed in the shop. There isn't a walk in humidor but several display cases of stogies throughout the place. A wide variety of pipes, magazines, accessories and tobacco products available. The service was good, prices are competitive and the place is well kept but the landlord needs to allow a smoke in a cigar lounge. read more

Recently I'd been in the market to buy a new lighter, and while they are but a stone throw away, I wanted to try their online store. I also wanted to confirm the quality of the lighter I intended to buy, and was met with a pleasant and brief affirmation on the subject. Mind you this is a lighter that I'd wanted since it was originally released as a limited production release in 2013. So to find it at the original asking price as when it was issued, well was ideal, since it's nearly impossible to find anymore in mint condition. Quite the boon to find it. read more

Great location, right near the White House. Horrible hours as they are only open 10AM-5PM and they no longer allow smoking in the building. I was told it was the landlord's decision, which is dumb because the tobacco smell is already burned in. They're missing out on good business opportunities, and not sure how they keep this location open with such limitations. read more

Initial store impressions: The store interior was dimly lit for an afternoon, a bit of an interesting store layout, it was also my first time there. Basically cigars on every wall and nook and cranny and nook and cranny.... Also, much of the merchandise is in glass jewelry store "counters" which is something I have not seen often. Usually this makes me worried about the humidity situation they are stored in. Maybe the whole store is humidified? Hopefully. Positives: Glad they stock Tatuaje "tats", illusione, and a bunch of the my father cigars. Some unique cigars you can't find at the other DC area shops! Nice! Diverse and prices were on par with online retailers! Not bad! Note: The store leans towards the maduros for most vitolas so be aware of that if you stop in. Negatives: I mainly gave three stars for the lack of a warm welcome, the cold feeling I got from the salesman was awkward. Just an overall skeptical unfriendly vibe. I was literally the only person in the store at the time. I spoke a different day with a salesman over the phone who went over and beyond my expectations, staff is not going to make me knock Drapers I know someone is friendly there. Currently, you cannot touch the cigars right now, so don't expect to inspect the wrappers on the cigars until after purchase. I blame covid for this but Drapers is literally the only DC area store out of four stores I have been to this month that does things this way. Bad: Unfortunately one of the Ashton cigars I bought which they had stored behind the counter, had a wrapper crack :( and it was a bit too dry too. Upon opening the cigar that day, the band stuck on the cellophane and the whole cigar looked super stuck/aged into the cellophane. Interesting. Won't be my go to store, needless to say. read more

You can not smoke In the store any more, sounds like that is a building mandate vs a COVID restriction, but Shelly's is just two blocks away. i love this cigar shop! and the great thing is it is alone a cigar lounge! i happened to be walking around downtown DC on a nice warm day and stroll on in i was immediately greeted by the store employee, who was this hawaiian looking dude. he happily showed me around the whole store, listening to my smoke preferences and using his own trials to help give me a bunch of suggestions. the cigar selection is pretty vast. I got some nice Brazilian ones and a new rocky patel that I hadn't tried before I think the other thing this place has going for it is a 'lounge feel', where they will essentially 'serve' you a cigar, which is nice, if you want to puff and relax overall, I think its a nice place. it is on the pricey side but the service is great the selection boasts a wide variety. plus its a nice and short walk to the white house ;) read more

I used to think that the internet had made cigar stores redundant, but this one is special for 3 reasons: 1. The Honey just got me a father's day present of a box of their 123rd anniversary lanceros. Quite possibly one of the best cigars I have ever smoked - and better than duty free ( and other) cubans I have smoked at 2x or 3x the price. 2. The selection and the service and the two leather chairs they have are special. Walk in, buy a cigar, score on of those chairs and you are living like a king. 3. I was doing exactly that a couple of days ago, in the inter-regnum between the US - Algeria game and the Germany-Ghana one, I had two hours to kill so I came here, bought one of their 122nd anniversary cigars and chatted with the smart looking guy who came in behind me who complimented me on my DC United shirt and army shorts and who turned out to be none other than Tom DeLay. When I travel for work I always try to buy my husband a few cigars to thank him for the extra work I know he's doing at home. Hence, I get to see a lot of cigar stores around the country, and I get personal experience with how they handle females who don't have a clue about cigars. 5 stars to these professionals for not missing a beat! These guys were respectful and took the time to mine my brain for some names of cigars my husband likes so I could buy him something that was in the vein of his cigar preferences but new to him. They had no trouble staying in the budget I had in mind. Total bill was $45 for 4 cigars. When I arrived home with their "smooth and not too spicy" picks he was VERY happy, saying he'd heard good things about this place and the cigars they picked were ones he'd read about but not had a chance to try yet. He also owned other cigars from one of the mfrs so I know they were right on track and he wasn't just being nice about it. Wishing I could give 6 stars....they gave me an old cigar box to pack them in so they wouldn't get crushed on the trip back. They gave me some great advice on cigars to try and weren't just selling extra leftover stock, either. They asked for examples of cigars I've enjoyed, and then suggested others that had a similar taste profile. Spot on assessments. I've been coming here for about 3 years now. At first, I wasn't sure about this place, a bit intimidating service (when once I asked about the taste of a particular cigar, the guys said it tastes like "cigars") but quickly realized that the service was "old school" and the environment was as friendly as it gets. Over the many times I've been coming here, I've finally settled into a niche and realized that, among other things, service might seem cold but is actually quite warm - they don't want to bum rush you or follow you around, but rather, they want you to just "be" and have a good time. If you have a question (taste of cigars aside), they're more than happy to help you out with a smile and a joke or two. But the best part is that you can just relax and have a good time. Of all the cigar lounges I've been to in the US, I have to say that they also make the best recommendations. On several occasions they steered me away from the more expensive cigars and made interesting suggestions by simply listening. If you're a newbie, this place is a gem - well, a gem for everyone that is. I won't talk bad about any particular place (I'm looking at you, the tobacco shop in Georgetown), but I guess with Draper's, I really don't have to. As you may already know...Maryland forbids the sale of clove cigarettes. Why? I have no friggin' clue. So, I have to come down to DC or VA for them...whenever I'm in the mood for them. So...I only come here for cloves. They have a decent selection of cloves. But, this place is something special especially for those cigar aficionados. This particular location has a lounge. So, people can come in and relax with a cigar. And, it's not like a bar, ya know...smoky haze. There's actually a sweet aroma hanging in the air. First time cigar smoker and it was great. This was a Dad's Night Out and my youngest son's friend father set it up here. The interior was very calm and roomy. Comfortable leather chairs, larger flat screen tv, and large window. The place makes me want to have the same type of setting for my home nut smaller. The staff here were informative and friendly. So I can't remember the name of the co-owner but he told us about how he got started in the business. We chat about footballs, baseball and the history of cigars in the DC area. We smoked, drank brandy and chatted for about three hour before we left to go to a cigar bar. I will definitely come back here when the moods hits me. read more

Explained I was a novice and looking to understand things a bit better, the salesman Tak - with some awesome SF cuflinks - was not just a salesguy, but a former customer and hugely a knowledgable fan of cigars (good start)! He was great, never seemed impatient as I kept peppering him with question after question. Showed me a number - they have a HUGE selection here - of different kinds of cigars. Ended up smoking a nice Padron with a maduro wrap that was box pressed (square shape - and got several others on his recommendation (the Padron was excellent btw). He must have helped me for at least 40 minutes or more and was extremely helpful. It also didn't go unnoticed, that he Didn't seem to steer me towards the more expensive end, but instead got me a nice variety of flavors - apparently, he said 40% of the cigar's flavor can come from the wrap; more if it's more narrow (who knew?!). I have purchased cigarettes here in the past- They sell cigarettes besides cigars-. Today, I entered W Curtis Draper Tobacconist with a female friend. As soon as we get inside, of a place full of middle men customers and employees, we are asked for our ID's. "Ladies, your ID's please". There was no greetings, no hello, no manners, beforehand. Right after that, the employee said "if you don't have your ID you have to step out". I understand this is the law; however, the way and tone we were treated was patronizing. Was it because we were two women buying goods in a place where male are the costumers? Whatever the reason is, there are other ways to treat customers regardless of their gender. read more

I recently moved to Washington, DC from NYC and was told that Drapers was the shop in DC by my NYC shop De La Concha. Well, all I can say is WOW!!! What a great shop, great selection, beautiful lounge area, and outstanding customer service. From what I was told by John, one of the proprietors, was that the 15th street location is new and that they had to move due to landlord issues. I have never seen the old location but the new space is drop dead gorgeous. The entry way is like a walk thru a museum with all of the antique pipes, boxes, etc. and it leads you to this amazing American flag which is built in to the counter. There are nooks and crannies everywhere which invite you to explore, you never know what you may find. Make sure you take some time to sit and enjoy your cigar in their lounge. I have met some incredible people while smoking in the shop; if you are into networking then you need to make Drapers a stop on your circuit. There are TVs spread thru out the store and I was able to watch some college basketball the last time I stopped by. Great Smokes, great service, great people, great lounge.
