We brought our vintage barrel chairs from the late 60s (handed down to us from my wife's grandmother) to Wahl Upholstery. One of the chairs had been recovered in the 90s, but the other was still the original Naugahyde from the 60s. The chairs were worn and weathered. Wahl upholstery brought them back to life, recapturing that 60s look and feel. Marie was very helpful. Showed us samples for fabric options she had and gave us the option to provide our own. In Feb this year, based on what i had heard about Wahls ( not recent reviews- my mistake) we chose them to re-upholster a chair and ottoman. What a mistake. The ottoman came back with a ridge and puckering on the top, when they fixed that, the top part was lopsided and one corner bulged out, they did not fix it but returned it the same way but in addition the skirt was too long and the ottoman would not move on the casters. This in addition to the frustration of not returning calls, and not answering the phone, requiring me to come to the store to find out what was taking so long. "oh we did not return that to you yet?" Now the chair they upholstered, the padding has shifted and the upholstery is wrinkling. Do not use this company. I could have done a better job. read more

Absolute waste of my time. Not sure what happened to this place. Awful service. Took my bike seat there 5 weeks ago and they said give him week and a half. 2nd week go in to check on it nothing. I took the interior center console of my car to get recovered and sewn. They did a good job but I stressed to the lady up front that takes the orders that I wanted grey stitching to match everything else. I told her two times because I thought she wasn't really engaged in what I was saying. I left thinking, god I hope I get the grey stitching. Well, sure enough, when I picked it up it had black stitching. I mean WTF! Not only did I feel disrespected by this useless employee but was extremely disappointed. For over one year I have wanted new seats in my 10 year old car that still has miles to go. The leather was stained on one seat and had two cuts on the other seat. I finally went to Wahl's Auto Upholstery in Los Alamitos based on location, estimate, and customer reviews. I always try to support local businesses. They have been here for years and thought I should just go ahead and take care the seats. I cannot tell you how pleased I was with the results. I feel like I'm in a new car again. Once Rene ordered the leather from a company that supplies Lexus and it was delivered, I dropped off the car and it was ready for picked up two days later. I think I will use this small, family owned business for any future upholstery work. While I was on a budget and not looking to fully restore my car seat this work was fantastic. As you can see from the photos there was a large tear in the backrest and I worked with Rene. He explained my options of what types of fabric he could use as well as the additional panels that may need to be replaced when he starts to work on it. I hate to give this place even ONE star, but there isn't an option for a negative star rating. We went into their old location to place an order mid to late August, never heard a peep from them. Went back again-come to find out they'd "lost" the invoice, dragged the chair back to the store to be measured for the second time...once again, they lost the invoice. Had another family member go in and what do you know! They located an invoice, the family member (82 year old mom) asked them to put a rush on the order since it had been delayed. She was promised it would be ready on Halloween, we called an hour after the time everything was to be ready and no one answered. We waited until 30min before they closed, again, no answer. It's now February...mom went in to have a repair on another cushion and they're asking if she plans in getting the order that they NEVER CALLED ABOUT! So now I go in...I was polite but firm, and they all but blew us off, no apologies, no trying to work things out, I saw the cushions and am not impressed. Needless to say they aren't coming back with me for the amount they wanted to charge us...oh yes, and very underhanded "cash only" business. Had them install a new headliner. They broke the visor screw hole, the interior light cover and both the seatbelt guides were left hidden behind the seat after they had removed it. One of the guys said to come back and they will fix the screw hole after they order the part. I went back as agreed and the owner had no clue what I was referring to. Eventually that was fixed after a short discussion. Perhaps the original owners were much better. read more

I took 2 dashboards there for re-covering and was told 2 to 3 weeks. 12 weeks later and still nothing and that is after half a dozen trips there to hurry them along. Finally I get them back, the stitching isn't straight and I can't get any air vents back in as they have put joins right where the vents go in and it's too thick. Absolute waste of money, don't bother giving them a go, there has to be someone better out there. read more

So... I called to inquire about restuffing a foam insert in my sofa and chair. Marie answered the phone and was extremely helpful... she informed me that they were moving to a new location. I told her I would call back in 2 weeks, to allow them to be settled at the new location. She said no problem, and looked forward to my call. I called as scheduled, anxiously awaiting for my cushions to be redone. The call was not picked up, but I left a message, that was 3 days ago, and never heard from Marie. My cushions have been redone, by another place. Wahl's lost my business, and now I'm writing this review. How do people stay in business if they don't take new customers. If you don't want new business, just say so. I'm very disappointed in the service, and I hope Marie reads this, and changes her service to others. read more

So sad to write a review like this for a local shop. My mechanic took my truck to have the upholstery repaired at Whal's because the seat was torn and needed some serious work. I spoke with Renee the owner on the phone and I thought he understood what I wanted. There was obviously a miss-communication because what I got was not what I asked for. So I called to discuss it with him and he proceeded to disparage my truck calling it a piece of junk and telling me he worked on Ferraris and Lamborghinis...Well the call went downhill from there. We took our leather couch in and got it back on time. It went downhill from there. 1st- two of the cushions were not filled enough so we took those back to the shop to get filled. When they returned, they were so fillled, they didnt fit. 2nd - a man then came over to our home and saw the issue and remeasured the cushions. When they returned only 1 cushion fit. 3rd - they then came back to pick up the entire couch so all the cushions could be redone and fit properly. When the couched was returned, we noticed a huge marking of cleaning fluid on the side of the couch that took most of the leather coloring off. 4th - the couch finally returned fixed! This entire process took from April 1st til May 15th! No discounts! No refunds! Just a...I'm sorry! We will never go back!! read more

I dropped two cushions off before work, as the store sign said that they opened at 7am. A nice upholsterer took my name and number and told me that the estimator would be in at 8am. I waited for about 20minutes after 8am and no one showed up. I left my cushions hoping to get a call back when the estimator arrived. i called back to check in at 11:30am because I received no call. The person I spoke with was not even aware that my cushions were sitting in the front office. I decided to call around and found a 5star Yelp reviewed Schultz J upholsterer down the street. I went and picked up my cushions and dropped them off there. They were able to give me an estimate right away. read more

We had 8 dinning room chairs completed in 2 weeks time, like they promised, and at a very reasonable price. They did an excellent job repairing and upholstering our 6 chairs and 2 captains chairs. I went to Wahl's after seeing all the reviews. I had 6 dining chairs to have redone. I had the fabric. They replaced all the fabric, plus the foam and the straps underneath. They did an amazing job, I am so happy I went there. I am now looking around the house to find other things to have repaired so I can deal with an honest, local small business. We have used Wahl's about 15 yrs ago and we were pleased. We will never use them again, very over priced for 4 small bar stool cushions, the receptionist called me at work saying the cushions I brought in were wrinkled, that they needed to use a new cushion with less foam, I disagreed with her and she basically argued with me about the issue. I asked her for a cheaper fabric also and she said it was too late the one I had picked was already ordered...so I just said ok, and went with the flow...Will not be returning unfortunately... read more

We have a family couch that also doubles as a queen size bed. My mom choose her own fabric from a location downtown and Wahl did the upholstery labor. Did an amazing job and turned the couch into something better than the original couch. Mind you my mother, LaWana, is extremely difficult and she has nothing but good to say and has a pleasureful time. This company also did our bar stools too. Our experience with Wahl's has been nothing but satisfactory . Someone is always there to answer questions, show us fabric samples, workmanship and quality of work. Renee brought samples to our home, let us bring large leather samples home and was efficient and timely with our job. We had 2 designer leather recliners to be re-upholstered . I've never been so disappointed in a Company, I met with Renee at my house to re-due my couch and make a window seat. The couch came out really nice but the window seat was a disaster. When I tried to speak to Renee about it, I only got his wife Marie. She is very difficult to work with. After 8 weeks of trying to get my window seat corrected I finally asked for my money back. This had to be done with a threat to go to small claims court. Then after I got a check from them it bounced and I had to physically go to the shop and ask for cash. Marie said that they would bring it to me at 11:00 am. After several call the money finally arrived around 2pm. I lost a 1/2 days work. I will never used them again. read more

I have had Wahl re-upholster 2 antique chairs for me. The first turned out awesome, thus a second, right? The first was an old wingback chair. Very firm. No metal parts. Simple. So I took my Grandpa's big old 1940 platform rocker to them with some beautiful Waverly barkcloth I bought on line. This chair has been re-upholstered a number of times. I LOVE this chair. It is full of memories and very comfortable. So why did Wahl remove the springs? Stupidly I did not sit in the chair when I picked it up. It looked terrific. I was so happy to see it looking great again! I put it in my storage unit for a coupe of weeks because we were moving. When all the dust settled and my chair was in its rightful place I finally discovered the wrong that had been done. The metal grid that supports the seat underneath was gone and so were the springs. We now lived much farther away so I called Wahl on the phone. Conveniently no one spoke enough English to converse with me. They also could not find the left over fabric when I picked up the chair....very expensive stuff, missing? No one ever sits in this chair any more because you sink down so far its not comfortable and then you can't get up! The chair has no spring and no support. The seat is just a box of mushy fluff. read more

They have been weeks overdue in completing orders and do not return calls to let you know. Will look elsewhere now as they are very frustrating to work with. I just changed my review to a 1 star because when I got home and looked closely at my chair, the vinyl was ripped and they just stapled it where it ripped!!. Otherwise this place was very uninviting and unfriendly. None of the staff seemed to be happy to work there. No one greeted me either times I went there. When I picked up my chair I stood in the lobby for 15 minutes and no one even saw me. I had to walk around to the back and stand there for another 5 minutes until someone talked to me. I couldn't even pay because no one knew how to use the credit card machine. A young boy helped me and was probably the friendliest person there. I probably won't use them again. This place used to be really good. But I believe the previous owner retired and the service after that was not good. They missed due dates twice, I and the work was sloppy and unprofessional. I pointed out several areas of concern from adhesive runs, cushion not fitting the shape of the seat, etc. They objected to my complaints & blamed it on the type of fabric, which they had pre-approved & ordered themselves. After many unpleasant trips to the store, they finally redid the cushion and fixed the problems, but this was a very unpleasant experience in dealing with them. I would not go back. read more

I have just finished dealing with them forever. 8 yrs. ago they recovered several pieces of our furniture. The front of our couches are pooching out very oddly and we almost never sit in them.(in a formal living room used only for company). I asked someone to come out and see if they could be repaired. No show for appt. yesterday, called office and was told they would find out and call me back. No call. Called back after an hour--was told again they would try to get hold of them and call back. No call. After wasting entire day, called and was given an appt. for next morning, with no explanation for day. Next morning no show. Called from my home phone and went to voice mail. Called again from cell phone and they answered. No explanation, nonformation. When I voiced my displeasure, was put on hold and eventually someone, much nicer, came to phone, but by then I was done with them. Totally unprofessional and unreliable!! Inexcusable!! I have used Whal's twcie now and have recently droped off an ottoman to be recovered. The lady who helped me each time was very nice and helpful. The first time I came here to have a cushion made for an indoor bench, they offered good advice and the cost was very reasonable. Luckily great workmanship so I am satisfied about that part, BUT terrible customer documentation/follow up. Did not call when ran into problems and needed to keep car overnight. Did not call when car was finally ready. I had to do all the calling/follow up. When gave next day pick up time it was done hours later while I waited. I was referred by my auto repair place, so did not read reviews. May have over paid. Wants cash in exchange for no sales tax.
