Went here because a local TV program highlighted it during a show on NW Florida places to visit. The hostess wasn't very friendly and couldn't crack a grin much less smile, not even once! We told our server it was our 1st time there and she said they were famous for their fresh fish and seafood boils. It took a long time to get our drinks and the place wasn't even crowded (5pm on Friday). We ordered the wahoo fish dip for an appetizer and it was delicious; however I noticed when it was dropped if at our table we weren't given app plates but our server gave app plates to another table so this wasn't the norm. I got the poke app as an entree and my husband got the fish and chips. The tuna seemed fresh but all I could taste was sesame oil and it was on a bed of undress raw cabbage with a side of sushi rice. The rice was partially cooked and and still crunchy in the middle. When the server FINALLY came by to see how everything was I said well it's so-so and when I tried to explain the rice wasn't cooked properly at first she said well it's sushi rice it's supposed to be sticky. I gave my husband a look and he chuckled knowing I cook sushi rice at home all the time. She offered to exchange it for the wahoo roll so I accepted. While the roll was tasty it seemed like they just took the leftovers from my plate to make the roll because there was barely any fish in it and all you could taste was that it was fried. My husband ended up sharing his dinner with me because it took so long for the roll to come out. There were 4 tiny, and I do mean tiny, pieces of fish on his platter but tasted good and their tartar sauce and cocktail sauce were amazing. Some of the best tartar sauce I've had. I was frankly surprised the manager never visited our table especially since we had food sent back and we made it known we were first time guests. I doubt we will go back to this location but may try the Valdosta location since we live midway between the two. read more

Traveling through...found it online and read the reviews first. We really liked this place! Our server was excellent! We had the sesame wahoo for an appetizer, which was delicious. I had the boiled shrimp and the cheesy grits. I eat gluten free and there was not many options which was no surprise. My friend had the jambalaya and thought it was good. We loved the casual atmosphere. There are big screen TV's in the dining area (which I usually HATE) but this time we got to watch Sweden beat Portugal in Under 21 European World Cup Mens Soccer, so that was pretty cool. I love pretty much any seafood and have rarely been disappointed. Tried Wahoo twice and was disappointed both times. I gave it another try because of the good reviews. Last time I visited I ordered fried oysters. I asked the waitress if they were big and she said yes. Big fail. The hush puppies were 2 to 3 times bigger than the oysters. And just TRY to get a waitress to return to check on you and refill your drink. We ate outside because they had live music which was nice. OMG - what a great, great, great DISAPPOINTMENT. Do we know what good dining is in this town? Get there and was looking around at the folks sucking on the meatless, skeletal crab legs. Sure $25 for all you can eat snow crab legs is a great deal, in theory, but if you have to sit there and suck till you're blue in the face trying to suck out some sort of meat from those sickly empty legs, then it's worthless. The grouper at market price of $18 was a timid 3 to 4 ounces on a bed of 2 ounces of grilled -- almost burnt brussels sprouts. The fish tacos were edible, but you can find much tastier ones in your local restaurants absent the overly priced tag. As for the fried calamari -- PLEASE don't deep fry calamari in sesame seed oil AND don't serve with a combo homemade sauce of mayo and ketchup. Bottom line -- won't return. read more

Ordered takeout 12:30 Sunday 11/16/14 to give the menu a taste test before scheduling a group visit. I lived near New Orleans for many years so was excited to find a Cajun restaurant. I love Harry's but don't like to drive to the other side of Gainesville to get there. SHRIMP PO'BOY: It was served on a soft hoagie type roll (I believe that is a crime in the south OR IT SHOULD BE!). That completely destroyed any sense of eating a Po'boy. Biting into a soft mushy roll with fried shrimp with very little flavor that you just paid $11 is pretty disappointing. And I asked that it be cut into 4 pieces and it was not. Crab Bisque: Tastes okay. I believe I'll add some crab meat to it and eat over rice another day. Can't say it was worth $8.99.... $4.00 maybe. But only to take it home add crab for a quick meal another day. Seafood Jambalaya: My first clue that it wouldn't be quite right should have been the menu which states that it is a stew served OVER rice. Jambalaya IS RICE. Taste was okay.... not worth the price. And it was more like something on top of rice. This was the lunch menu so the $34 was far to high for a very below average meal. I think $25 for the 3 items would have been more appropriate. And for crying out loud HIRE A COOK WHO HAS BEEN TO NEW ORLEANS! The atmosphere/decor nice, but music far to loud for a restaurant (though the manager said back rooms didn't have speakers). I REALLY, REALLY wanted to love this restaurant. And I would have been willing to pay a little extra to keep from driving to Harry's downtown, but can't say I'd go back again. I hope that the owners read this and take a trip to New Orleans just to eat their way from one end of the city to the other. And do it again.... your life savings (which I'm sure you invested in this restaurant) may depend upon it. read more

Woohoo for Wahoo! Everything about this place (well, except for the I-75 traffic noise lol) is fantastic! They have a great wrap-around porch/patio that is super dog-friendly (our Pomeranian was even greeted with a fresh water bowl). EVERYONE there (especially Bailea, Steve, and Justine) was so friendly. Superb service, killer happy hour ($3.50 margaritas on Thursdays? YES PLEASE:)), and really delicious food. Their fried green tomatoes are sinful without being heavy/greasy, and the ale-infused pimento cheese that tops them is insanely good. Other stars of the show were various fried seafood items (catfish, oysters, and scallops, oh my!), sumptuous cheese grits (they almost tasted like they were infused with creamed corn--really unique), and their Afternoon Delight, a deep-fried desert sandwich that blew our minds. Make sure you have AT LEAST one person to share that concoction with; it's RICH. This place seems a little out of the way compared to other Gainesville eateries, but it is so worth it!! read more

For the first time in almost a year, my husband and I enjoyed a rare night out to ourselves. When searching the webpage for the menu, we found many sites, with reviews that were not very kind, in most cases. We decided to try for ourselves, hoping we would have a different experience. And we did. The staff was kind and courteous, the food was delicious and quick to the table, the prices were good considering the quality and quantity of food. I have lived in Gainesville for many years and I can say in my opinion that this was one of the best first timer experience that I have ever had. I kept waiting for something to go terribly wrong, but as the meal progressed it just got better. I know that any restaurant can have a bad day, but whatever kinks needing work have been handled. I am very glad that we went and we cannot wait to return with parents and children. I will be recommending this restaurant for others and I hope people that have had bad experiences will give them another try because I truly hope this business has success. read more
