And just 2 visits to private gardens: The rest of it was a walk around the block at The Battery, peering into the historic homes behind gates that face the waterfront. A bit of context: I love Laura personally. She is charming and winsome, and I really wanted to give this a high rating. But this is not a good tour and is certainly not a good party. My niece wanted to experience a Charleston tea party, and the idea of Laura's home "overlooking the river" and visits to her "friends' private gardens" sounded most inviting. However... There is no view, her house is (charming yet) average, and her personal garden is "meh." While we did pick up some Charleston history, we got more of her own family history than seemed relevant. Her less mellifluous partner drove the van, and we had assumed Laura stayed home to make fresh scones, sandwiches, etc. But not so! Upon returning to her home, the service included one tray of tiny cucumber "Circle cutout of bread" the size of a Ritz cracker with a soggy cucumber and mint leaf, followed by cinnamon bread with cheese and pimento, a lovely combination except that it was quite soggy: "prepared well in advance" I'm sure. And the tray that was passed had only 1 tiny bit per person. Then another round of the same Ritz-cracker-size cucumber sandwiches, followed by the best part of the meal which was ONE tiny little Philo tart per person with lemon curd: yummy. Homemade plum liquor. NO scones, and no selection of teas: only one type of tea, (reportedly brewed the night before.) NO selection of desserts: only " Trader Joe's lemon cake". (I am not kidding: Laura confided that to one of the guests in response.) As the old joke about army food goes, "it's fine ... except for 2 problems. It tastes terrible, and there's not enough of it." For $50 per person, I would've shrugged and thought "Eh, it is what it is." But for $100 per person, one expects a bit of a lavish spread. Here, one of the women on the tour leaned over to ask the other, "is this all there is?" The other replied, "don't worry, we have food back at the rental house."

Was the rest of our trip so underwhelming that our excursion with Lowcountry Walking Tours exceeded all other expectations? Perhaps we just lucked out with the optimal factors to catapult our urban trek to a noteworthy high. I can't point my finger at any particular indicator that the rest of our Charleston trip was subpar, so I'm concluding that our tour was truly outstanding. First off, the late-January weather was flawless; it was perfect for spending a few sun-drenched mid-morning hours strolling around Charleston's French Quarter. Second, Captain Jim kept us entertained with enchanting history lessons, snappy quips, and fascinating details we would have undoubtedly overlooked as unwitting tourists. Finally, we'd opted for the Hidden Alleyways and Passages tour and it did exactly what it says on the tin. We wandered down tucked-away paths that I never would have thought were accessible to the public (let alone take me anywhere desirable). If you're visiting Charleston and looking for an affordable way to learn about the city and obtain a deeper appreciation for its rich history, I unhesitatingly recommend Lowcountry Walking Tours.

So, we opted for an air conditioned bus tour which gave us the historic highlights and a great overview of the various neighborhoods. The tour guide was very knowledgeable, and we enjoyed her friendliness and helpful bits and pieces of information. The tour was given by a third generation Charlestonian named Don. I loved this as many of the locations had family meaning and he put things into context from a personal perspective. Many other tour companies hire guides from that moved to Charleston, which is fine, but it adds a little extra when they are from Charleston. This is a walking tour- it lasted about 3 hours. I mention this because I wasn't sure based on the website and airport flyer that I grabbed. Wear comfortable shoes as you walk down cobblestone and all over the city. When I went to book on the website, I had an issue so I just called the company. Don answered and was really helpful (I later found out he was my tour guide as he remembered me). He placed my order for me and the day of the tour, I received a text message letting me know my tour guides name and what he would be wearing. We met at 158 Church Street. This is not a store front nor is it an office with signage. Look for the tour guide wearing the Twisted Charleston tshirt. We started by the Slave Market in the French Quarter and ended by the Pineapple Fountain. The tour focused on the shady side of Charleston and is NOT a ghost tour. Don was extremely knowledgeable and not only provided a dark history but also fun facts- like details of the pineapple- in fact many people have acorns and pine cones not realizing it- because they are more durable and easy to make. I highly recommend this tour if you want to know more than what the 'standard' tour will tell you. Would take it again- 100%.

The meeting place was kind of odd, two tables on a street with no sign, but that kind of added to the experience. His lantern was a great touch.
