I did a lot of research preparing for our Charleston trip and as a tour junkie that's always an important part of our trips. I found the pirate tour through Google search and we were super excited since it seemed like a fun but history filled tour. Day of we started at the Powder Magazine. It was great to get a chance to visit that as an added bonus to the tour. We ended up being the only two people on the tour which was awesome!! The temperature was too hot that day for the parrots, we were a little bummed about that, but totally understood and it didn't detract at all from the tour. Eric was a fantastic tour guide. We didn't take it too fast; sometimes on tours they move so fast and you don't have time to see or enjoy what you're looking at or what the guide is saying. This was the perfect speed. He also made sure when we stopped it was under shade because it was so hot. His knowledge of Charleston pirate and pirate history was great. Eric is very clearly an expert and has done loads of research in the field. Another perk of it being our own private tour was that we got to ask all the questions we wanted! We enjoyed it so much we actually looked into booking the ghost pirate one, but the last night of our trip wasn't one of the days it was offered. Visiting Charleston again is on our list and we will definitely be booking another tour with Eric & Charleston Pirate Tours! read more

Best Ghost Walk Ever! We have been on numerous ghost walks throughout the U.S. and Europe; this was without a doubt the BEST one we've ever been on! It's all about Eric. His knowledge of Charleston, his passion for the stories he tells and his ability to tailor the tour based on the guests, is what makes this ghost walk so unique. We also loved the fact that he focuses on pirates of Charleston (which we absolutely loved). During part of the tour, we sat on a bench and overlooked the bay where the pirates blockaded hundreds of years ago. Hearing those tales and seeing the real life water where it happened gave me chills. He also tells of numerous ghostly stories that will have you looking over your shoulder the rest of the night! We took our 4 year old son on the kid's pirate tour and he loved it, as did his parents. The hour long tour was engaging for our son and funny and interesting for the adults. Most importantly, the time frame was perfect. In that hour, our son marveled at Sabrina, the "real pirate' with her parrot leading the tour, got to practice being a pirate, followed a treasure map while running around a park to approx. 10 stops where we all learned about pirate facts and lore, and finally ended up at a hidden treasure chest where he received some goodies including a balloon parrot of his own. I though my boys would really like it but my youngest just became bashful. I wish parents didn't have to pay or got something more out of it. The parrot was the best part. All the right things were there. Swords, maps, make a flag, skull caps, treasure chest and toys. But the lady didn't seem much like a kid person and also like she was a little burnt out of giving the tour. My wife and I signed up for the Pub Stroll in the Fall of 2012. Tour meets in Washington Square and takes you through part of Downtown Charleston, stopping at historic sites, and three pubs (2 of which were historic in nature, not sure about the last one). The tour was great! The guide was very knowledgeable and added enough humor to keep things interesting and fun. It's a great way to see downtown and learn history, and you get to drink some refreshing adult beverages along the way (price not included in price of tour). I would highly recommend this to anyone visiting Charleston. We met a few folks who lived in the area that also enjoyed the tour and learned some new facts and trivia. read more

The Charleston Pirate Tour, believe it or not, was one of the best tours that my husband and I have ever been on. Not only was Eric extraordinarily informative, but he was patient, and a fantastic story teller. We learned so much about the peninsula as well as the area as a whole. Both having to do with the incredible history of Pirates in the area, but also that of modern day correlations- such as Stephen Colbert's childhood home, a little about the architecture of the homes in the area, the earthquake bolts, etc. I also appreciate that our tour group was relatively small. I would definitely recommend this tour to anyone who wanted to have a fun and informative walking tour around the area. read more

Sabrina was so knowledgeable! What a gift it was to have the real deal subject matter expert to answer questions and dispel myths. I try to stump them with questions but just couldn't do it! We toured with Eric and Capt. Bob on 5/20 on the morning tour, and we just want to be sure to tell everyone we can that this is the most memorable thing we could have possibly done! It is a wonderful time with storytelling and humor while walking all over iconic places in Charleston. It was as if you could hear and feel history living and breathing as Eric spoke, and just to think about standing where the people in history stood is awe-inspiring. Despite the SC heat, which you'd think you'd be used to after living your whole life in the state - we had a wonderful time. I surprised my husband with this tour and I am SO glad I did. We went on a kid-version of the pirate tour last week. We booked very far in advance and had multiple reservations in 8 different states, so I forgot about meeting at the whatever they called it-- the shoreline. After we parked on the fifth floor of the parking garage across the street, and walked down all the stairs, we searched for anything that said Pirate Tours, but didn't see it any sign. We looked in a place that seemed like it was public, and lo and behold, through the gate, down a path and around the corner (at this point we were really hoping we didn't get any funny looks from people thinking we were intruding,) there was a little sticker on the window that said we were in the right place. But we weren't. We had a good half-mile to walk with a bunch of little kids. They do let you know on their documentation that you have to meet down there, but I missed it and my kids paid the price. Sabrina said that keeps happening. My only suggestion is that they get better signage visible on the street, (maybe even directions to the shore for the tours, so you don't park there,) and call or send an e-mail (or both) to confirm with people the day before and say something about where to park. Might help a lot. :) All our hotel bookings and flight bookings send little notifications on my phone the day before, and even though I write notes and keep track of everything during our extensive road trips (we're visiting all 50 states this year,) sometimes that has saved me from tripping up. Luckily, it was the first stop of the morning, and the kids still had lots of energy. .Sabrina was kind and patient even though we got there late. The tour itself was perfect for young kids. Doozer the parrot was a real talkative hit- we adored her. I felt like we could have asked anything, and Sabrina would have been able to supply a great answer. The little costumes and activities she provided were well-thought-out and so perfect. It was VERY well worth our limited time, and worth the money. read more

We had a fabulous time on this tour. The guide dressed as a pirate and knew so much about pirate lore, pirate fiction and pirate facts. It was a slow walk and the guide explained tour information for the entire two hour tour. I highly recommend it to anyone. Highly recommended! We took both the Tavern tour and Pirate/Ghost walking tour. Both were awesome! Pirate Mike on the tavern tour was very informative and engaging. He brought the tour participants into the story enabling us to relive the history. The locations he brought us to are as interesting now as they were back then. As for the Pirate/Ghost tour - Eric is a wonderful story teller. The research he has done is evident and he provides little known pieces of information he has learned over the years that you will not find elsewhere. read more

We did this tour with our 5 year old and she loved it. It was mainly geared toward kids of that age, but as a parent I enjoyed seeing the kids looking for clues, looking at maps and pretending to be pirates in waiting. The entire tour took place at the battery and it was contained to the park, with no streets to be crossed, so it was safe. Sabrina, our Pirate, was the right mix of pirate-y and docent so the tour was an enjoyable activity for an hour or so. the Parrot was cool. Booking the tour was easy enough. Last weekend, my daughter and I took my grandchildren to the Childrens Pirate Tour. They absolutely loved it! Sabrina made sure they had lots of fun doing pirate things and they had the opportunity to learn a lot of history ( in a fun way!). Plus they found the treasure chest! I do recommend this for young children. The only thing I didn't like, or maybe will say complain about, is the cost/charge for the parents. The parents don't take part of the activities other than simply following the group of kids around. Standing apart from the group and activities, we can listen to what Sabrina is telling the kids but that is all. It is, after all, a tour for the children. So...why are the parents charged such a high price for doing nothing? I can see maybe being charge $5.00..maybe. Instead, parents are charged almost as much as the children that are participating. So, my recommendation: pay for only one parent to accompanying your children and the other parent / adults can just sit on the benches in the park and watch the group run around from one corner to the other corner of the park. It's a small park and they do not leave the area. You don't even have to stay at one bench...there are benches all round the park so you can move from one bench to another as they go to each "clue" spot. Since we were there during the Solar Eclipse weekend, it was very, very crowded in the city that weekend. We did not do the other tours, but I really want to come back South Carolina to do the two hour walking tour with Eric. read more
