There's plenty of little eateries right off of Broadway on Liberty Street if you are up for it. I have to say that the Elting Memorial Library, New Paltz's town library, is perhaps the best library we've visited in New York to date! The building looks unassuming from the outside, with the dainty white exterior blending perfectly into the quaint downtown setting that would fit seamlessly into a set for a community theatre production of "The Music Man". But step inside, and you'll find shelves upon shelves of a vast selection of fiction and nonfiction, plus ample seating on cozy chairs and couches to curl up and read the day away! The folks that work at this library are some of the friendliest we've met in all our journeys, and be sure to snap a picture with the moose mascot before you leave! If you're anything like us and love the experience of visiting a great library, no trip to New Paltz is complete without a trip to the Elting!

The library is a bit smaller than some of the others (then again, we're spoiled by the vastness of the Mahopac Public Library), but doesn't skimp on book selection and friendliness of the staff. This is also an excellent place to visit with children - their youth section is robust and it always seems like there's some fun programming for kids going on whenever we visit. The Howland Public Library is a definite asset to the Beacon community, and a must-visit to add to your list when you're in town!

If you're in the Cragsmoor, New York, area (Walker Valley, Pine Bush, or Ellenville), I highly…read morerecommend that you stop by this remarkable and historic community library. (Cragsmoor is adjacent to the Sam's Point Preserve of Minnewaska State Park, which is worth a visit on its own for some really excellent hiking trails.) The Library seems unremarkable from the exterior, but the interior features a large room with a wood-paneled ceiling and dominated at one end by a large stone fireplace with a bas relief sculpture above it. The other end of the room, behind the librarian's desk, features large windows, including stained glass panels. The Library was originally built in 1925, and many of the books purchased upon the opening or soon thereafter are still on the shelves for loan. Several years after it opened, a narrow balcony, supported by American Chestnut pillars, was added around three walls. Many large paintings by local artists (Charles Curran among them) are hung from the balcony railing or on the walls throughout the room. It is, in short, everything a library should be - a comfortable, serene space with plenty of spots tucked in where one can spend some time undisturbed. During our visit, the library director, Nancy Krom (a Cragsmoor native, descended from generations of Cragsmoorians), warmly welcomed us and provided an overview of the history of the library and the artwork.

I stepped into this lovely stone building to return some books and perused the stacks and selected…read morea lovely novel to read. Alas, I did not have my library card on my person...I did have my bank debit card with my name but this was not worthy of establishing my identity according to the librarian. She even said to me "I don't know you" a la Mariah Carey (Made my day!) and gave me the door. I am most happy and rest easily to know that this cherub is single handedly protecting the precious books of Stone Ridge from potential thieves.

They also run wonderful programs during the school year for pre-school age children, and their summer reading program for school age children is awesome. In response to another review about needing to be a resident, all municipal libraries are like that, but if you have a library card from one, you can check out books from any RCLS libraries.
