I set my stopwatch and called this Walmart as I was sitting in the parking lot. I was looking for a product that was prominently in display, easy to locate and transport, and popular. I was put on hold ten seconds after I walked into the store. While on hold, I found the item I was looking for, walked to a cash register, paid for it, bagged it, and unlocked my car before hanging up. Nobody had picked up. The floors are sticky. I've never experienced so much incompetence in one location. On my first visit, I was in the area and remembered that I needed ingredients to make apple pie. Luckily this Walmart has a grocery section so I thought I could just stop in and grab some honeycrisp apples that I read about online. While walking towards the entrance, I was immediately greeted by Walmart's friendly beggar asking for any leftover change and then approached by their local promoter handing out "Sexy Saturdays @ PYUR" fliers. I was able to wade through the sea of abandoned shopping carts and avoided getting hit by people exiting through the entrance door and finally made it inside. Thankfully the apples were almost immediately at the entrance, so I started looking for honeycrisp apples. Throughout the sea of assorted apples, there was not one sign nor label. Being a crafty millennial, I pulled out my phone and tried to compare a picture of honeycrisp apples to the mixture of vibrant greens and reds laid out in front of me. Unfortunately these apples are very generic looking so I had to ask for assistance. I found the produce attendant and asked her which of these apples were honeycrisps. Helpfully, she responded with, "This isn't my department, sorry." So I approached another Walmart employee who was wandering through the produce and asked again. We walked over to the fruit and I waited patiently as she picked up each type of apple to inspect them. "These all should be good enough for baking; there isn't a difference," said the Iron Chef baker. Frustrated, I left and headed to a properly labeled Stop-n-Shop. On my next visit, I was going to Hartford's Santacon in the next two hours and desperately needed a Santa hat. Walmart was close and I assumed they had plenty of Santa hats. I get in and walked over to what I thought was the holiday aisle. The aisle attendant must have quit weeks ago because there were Christmas items strewn all over; it looked as if people raided for supplies after the rapture started. At the end of the aisle were 3 Walmart employees touching items, so I approached the closest one and asked if they had Santa hats. She started coughing up a storm, yelled "NO", and ran out of the aisle. I just stood there confused because I didn't even understand what just happened. The second employee comes up to me and asked what my question was so I asked it again. "Santos hats?" she asked. "No, Santa hats." "Santos hats? We don't have those." She looked to the third employee and asked, "Do you know where he can get Santos hats?" He replied, "Yea try Dollar Tree next door." I don't even know what a Santos hat could be so I spelled out Santa for them. The third employee said, "Ohh! We don't sell that." I know for a fact that there has to be Santa hats here so I left the confused couple and eventually found hats in the gardening section. My final visit involved me trying to make a pregnancy care package for my sister for Christmas. I was getting a variety of items and thought that Walmart would be an easy one-stop-shop. I went in and looked for a hand basket because I didn't need an entire shopping cart, but apparently people steal them so they don't provide them. I tested out a few carts and chose the best one: a cart with only 3 working wheels. Using both hands at the side of the cart to steer, I screeched my way over to the pharmacy section in search of heating pads. I found a shelf labeled "Heating Pads" with everything but heating pads in it. I approached the pharmacy desk in hopes that the pharmacist would come up to the front and assist me. I knew I was in for another fun time at Walmart when she glares at me from the back of the room and says, "What." I asked her where the heating pads are and she pointed to the same shelf. I told her that I already checked and she said, "Well that's where they are." Well it looked like I wouldn't be getting heating pads today so I dragged my cart a few aisles down to look for some milk of magnesia. Unable to understand their sorting system, I asked an employee if she knew where I could find it. "This isn't my department," said the employee of the month. Defeated by this store, I gave up on Christmas shopping and headed home. I don't understand how this store filled their staff with the most unhelpful and incompetent crew that they could find. So one night I came in after a long night of work and just before heading to pick up my kids from the sitter I saw that there were only two registers open and one register that had a line but light off dealing with a coupon lady. The two lines that were open were so long they went right into the apparel section. I went up to a guy and asked if he was the supervisor but the one with the coupon lady said she was. So I asked her if she could get on a register and help the lines and she gave me the dirtiest look, and said I AM WITH A CUSTOMER I don't make the schedule . Her and the other girl janelle then laugh at the whole situation talking and after they were both done you would have thought they would hop on the line register and instead they watched us wait and then headed into an office. Thank goodness a cleaning lady named Sunday took the initiative these two SUPERVISORS could not think to make and hopped on to get the lines down. It took 40 minutes to get through the line. Nobody here speaks English and I'm pretty sure it's everybody's first day of work, every time I come here. If your hobby is having your patience tested, this is the place for you! I live right here in Hartford so unfortunately I've had to come to this store many times for my needs and let me tell you now... AVOID THIS PLACE AT ALL COSTS!! Bad staff that just don't care about anything. They don't their jobs, just let things pile up around the store or on shelves, they are entirely rude (there have only been one or two employees who are actually nice). Sometimes they just leave their posts so that they don't have to deal with people so when someone actually needs them, they are never around! The customers here are no better. Just as rude, filthy, no lack of any common decency or morals or anything. The parking lot is a horrendous place to be. In fact, avoid this entire plaza entirely. Everytime I come here to one of the shops, I always get stressed out because it seems like no one here knows how to drive. Not only that, but the whole store has been under renovation for the past two years and they've changed the layout so many times I no longer have any clue where anything is. The new bigger layout is just a crazy maze that not even a three year old would create. The worst part of it was when I went once with my mom and the employee that brings all the shopping carts just left the long stack of carts in the MIDDLE OF THE PARKING LOT. It wasn't even on the sides where the actual parking spots are. No, it was right in the middle where the cars actually need to drive to get through. The line of carts was directly behind my mom's car so she had to maneuver her way out because the carts where way too heavy for her to push. We must have been there for a good 10 minutes and not a single staff member was around, not even the plaza security guard was driving around like they were supposed to be. Even after we left, we were pretty sure those carts were still there for a good while. Don't come here. Just DONT. Take the time to drive out to Rocky Hill or something. SCAMMED AT WAL-MART!! BUYER BEWARE!! I was scammed today! I was in Walmart store at Charter Oak, Flatbush Avenue, Hartford Connecticut. A heavy set African-American lady with short curly fade haircut approached me saying I had won a free gift and she handed me a card with a gift box on it stating FREE GIFT. She said to go to the jewelry counter and she was tagging other customers in the store that walked by and handing out the same card and telling them to go meet by the jewelry counter. When we got to the jewelry counter was a podium. There was about 10 customers there to receive their free gift. The lady proceeds to go behind the jewelry counter and made an announcement over the loudspeaker that there was a free gift giveaway at the jewelry section in Walmart and you have 5 minutes or so to get to the jewelry counter. Then there is a mob of 20-30 people trying to get their free gift. We received a presentation from the lady stating that she flew in from Walmart corporate office in Texas and because Walmart had met their jewelry goals in the state of Connecticut and surrounding states that they had this free give away. She said we everybody there had won a free Swarovski crystal heart pendant. She procedes to show us yellow gold plated chains. She said they were 14 karat gold over silver and Walmart was testing them out with their customers before adding them to their inventory. She said that in addition to the free gift we could receive these extra chains with matching bracelets a retail value of 220 for $25 this is a special offer that had to be taken today as a customer appreciation day. All of this is on store video tape. I selected the white gold over silver being that I was one of the first people in line and she said she only had 14 white gold over silver chains left. The rest of the chains were 14 karat yellow gold plated over silver. I paid cash for my jewelry at the jewelry counter. I received a Walmart receipt and I spent about an hour or so shopping and I decided to return the jewelry because it was too expensive and I wasn't even at Walmart to buy jewelry. I was just there to buy groceries but they came up to me and said I want a free gift and I fell for the free promotion. I decided I didn't want to purchase this item so I went to customer service, Spoke to Sales Associate/CSR: Esh and another manager named Sabrina after I rang up my groceries. Customer service dept told me that I could not return the jewelry because it was from a third party vendor and someone wrote no return on the receipt. The care card has an address stating you can return the jewelry if it's defective or but there's nothing about returning the jewelry to get a refund of your money. It's only to exchange the jewelry. Shame on Wal-Mart! Lots of elderly, fixed income people shopping there today being scammed out of their hard earned money. I spoke to Jordan - Assistant manager for refund and he said "nobody forced me to spend my money, it was of my freewill." There is no store manager - Jeff to report to because he no longer works there. He blamed me for buying the jewelry and would not refund my money. He even said there is no corporate office in Texas!!! I believe they should refund their customers because this happened in their store and they let this "3rd party vendor" lie to their customers and rip them off. If I could give ZERO stars I would!!! First I need to say that until the last two months, I had never stepped foot in Walmart, for the obvious, political reasons, and in fact protested this store when it first opened in my neighborhood. And i do try to shop at independent, locally owned stores as much as possible. However, recently, and with some shame, I entered this, my neighborhood Walmart. Yes, I'm still concerned about the usual Walmart-issues. However, I just want to say that the workers, and generally the patrons at this store are incredibly nice. I was just there (on Thanksgiving--argh! but out of town family coming for the weekend, and just realized needed items). Workers unfailing nice and pleasant--I have some back problems and so a worker offered to help me get down an area rug and walked with me to make sure I could find a not-busy register. The young woman at the register, chatting with me while ringing up purchases, told me when I asked that all she wants for Christmas is a laptop, and she hopes she can get one for $100.00. the store itself is kept surprising clean and well stocked and unmessy. The prices ARE low, for those politically concerning reasons, and the lighting is grim, and the aisles are weirdly narrow, so every time you round a corner you risk bumping into someone. I've been going there 1-2 times a week lately, and have had no problems in store or parking lot. One reason I like going there now, as well as living in this down-at-the-heels neighborhood where I've lived for the last 35 years (after growing up in tony Old Lyme) is it reminds me all the time that most poor and working poor people are kind and hard working and just trying to keep it together. read more

OK this was a bad experience. Went in here for just a few items I couldn't get at other stores in the area. They only had one of the trimmer I wanted and the package had been opened and the power cord opened. But I found the other five item on my list and went to the "fast checkout" lane. I was second in line but after twenty minutes of waiting on two lines while the cashiers screwed up and the supervisors could not be found, I left without buying any of it. Items that appear on the website as in stock at the store ran out weeks ago, they have no idea when they might be restocked. This is a conveniently located Walmart, however beyond the location, nothing is convenient about it. I visit, when required, but always off peak. I have on occasion purchased food here but usually we are there for commodity items. In and out. They have a security patrol in the parking lot, but sometimes it is a bit sketchy. It is a Walmart, it is nearby and there are a few things in the plaza that you might go to at the same time such as the Asian grocery store (Five Farmers) or Marshall's. This would not be a great place to recommend to someone new to the area. read more

No matter the time there are never more than 2 or 3 cash registers open and the cashiers all move at the same pace... painfully slow. If you have to return something do not do it here. Again, the line will be a mile long, there will be four people behind the counter chitchatting, and yet only one person will be helping customers. 3 trips to Walmart, 6 hrs of waiting, NO iPhone 5s, = waste of my time!!! Worst Walmart Experience Ever!!! Will Never Return!!! Went to Walmart to get iPhone 5s with $75 gift card. Waited in line 1.5 hrs (only 3 people in front of me) - computers were slow, employees were slow and they were not focused on what they should be doing, which was to input the customer data into the computer stations for mobile phone activation. Only 1 register was working that could do cell phone contract purchases. They activated one customer in 1.5 hours then made announcement that the system was down for good. Left store with no iPhone. Came back 4 hrs later after receiving call back from Walmart employee stating that computers were back up running. Waited 1.5 hrs again (no one in front of me) - computers slow again, only 1 register was working that could do cell phone contract purchases again, employees were still slow and very unfocused on helping the customer that was in line and in front of them. After 1.5 hours, they again announced the system was down so I left again without a new phone. Came back next day. Waited in line 2 hrs (only 1 person in front of me). Printer that prints contract was out of ink so the bar code was not able to be scanned to issue the gift card for the customer in front of me. (It looks like it's been out of ink for long time because there was a stack of contracts on counter that you could barely ready due to lack of ink.) Employee called on intercom for manager. I counted 6 employees in the area, no one know where manager was. No one knew where to get replacement ink cartridge for printer. I personally had to go all the way to front of store to Customer Service to get manager TWICE. Printer ink issue finally resolved after 1 hr. They were able to issue the gift card to the only customer ahead of me, after she waited for 1 hour. In that 1 hour window, no employee showed interest in helping or explaining to other customers who were waiting in line to be serviced. Finally another half hour gone by and they were ready to issue me my phone. But they could not configure the phone right and was not able to get it working. By then I'd been in Walmart for over 2 hours. No longer willing to wait for another hour while employee tried to fiddle with new iPhone 5s to get it working, I told the employee please cancel in process transaction (as I have not yet received a new Working iPhone 5s) and refund me my money. Took 1 more hour to reverse transaction and refund me. Bottom Line - go to AT&T or Apple store with more knowledgeable people who can assist customer in timely matter. No matter how good the deal is, it's not worth the time and hassle to deal with Walmart. I will never return to this or any Walmart store ever! I would like to give a rating of 0 stars for this Walmart, but 1 is the lowest you can give :-( read more

People will beg you for money. You might have a car accident. A worker that corrals shopping carts may hit you as you are walking with a train of 40 carts. Then there is the very real possibility of getting shot- it happened two years ago. This is before you even get inside. If you should make it, be ready to face walls of pasta sauce...with no pasta. Shrimp imported from Indonesia but no....salt. Terrible staff who say disgusting things about people in Spanish if they don't think they speak the language. Draconian pharmacy manager...etc... add the normal Wal Mart hassles and this is a pretty awful experience. And God help you if it's the first of the month.... then when you're done shopping... you still have to get back to your car in one piece. Unless, you live in one of the RVs in the parking lot. Always really crowded, ghetto and sloppy. If it wasn't so close to home I'd avoid this Walmart. Customer service is bad and there's always a huge line for all the registers, including the 10 items or less, especially when people are bringing cart full of items to them. Prime time is usually at night, but everytime I go it seems to have a full parking lot. Other than the low prices it's not really worth dealing with because its so messy, the other customers are rude and are always eating the food and leaving it on random shelves for you to find. read more

As the rest of the reviews indicate, this walmart is absolutely horrible. It is dirty, disgusting, disorganized, and crowded. The people that work here are unfriendly and they have zero motivation to work at a reasonable pace. Plan on standing in line for at least 20 minutes because they typically have 2 or 3 registers open during busy times. On the way out you also have to stand in line while one person checks your receipt. You feel like a criminal as he digs through your stuff to make sure to check it off. It is better to go to Target on New Britain ave or go to the Walmart in Avon if needed. Otherwise, plan on taking a couple Xanax to be able to handle this place! read more

I am disabled and can't walk far, so thank you for always helping me to find a motorized cart when I enter the store. One day, to y surprise and gratitude, I began at the pharmacy, and she apparently noticed that I felt unwell and tired so she arranged for a 'personal shopper" to accompany me through the store, I only had to tell her what was on my list, and she even helped me to decide on what I was confused about, and even found me Guyere Cheese at 1/2 price. I must be very lucky. Everyone I have ever asked for help has done so with a good attitude, I have never been given the impression that I was "bothering" somebody when I asked for help. I only go there once a month but seeing such a miserable rating I simply had to share my experience with this store, the Eyeglass Center, even the Subway at your store is good - I have never had a really edible sandwich at a Subway in my life but went there one day as I was hungry and had time before the ADA Van was to pick me up and I was waited on by such a cheerful and friendly (and smart,) young woman who suggested I get all the vegetables I liked added on, with a Chipotle Mayonnaise dressing, which I loved and have since made at home - needless to say, after only paying for extra cheese, I ended up with a sandwich that took two papers to wrap in and it was delicious. It was so fat I was only halfway through, eating it outside as it was ice weather, and the ADA Van driver told me to go ahead and finish it on the van, and remarked that it smelled delicious and where did I get it? Mainly 1 star because the optometry department is rude and so slow every time I go. I'd stop going there, but since I got my lenses there, I've had to deal with them several times to get my glasses fixed. The store itself has been disappointing at times-ex. been there for basic things like a pocket calendar and they didn't have it when I went. read more

They have some staff that look and act like they don't want to be bothered but there's this one gentleman I believenhes a manager or something named Fred that was very friendly and helpful. He stopped what he was doing and helped me look for a few times now that the stores bigger I wasn't sure where things where. He seemed swamped and no other staff where helping him or around so I was shocked he asked if I needed help guess I looked lost. I was very impressed and pleased with him I wish all staff there where likehim they rreally need new staff there like him.
