Conveniently located between a gas station and the Cable Visitors Center, Rondeau's is really two businesses on one -- there's a True Valley hardware store on the left and a grocery store on the right. We visited both twice during our one-week stay in Cable. Hardware Store (rating: 5/5 for a small-town hardware store). Sure, their inventory is smaller than the big box stores at home, but they had all of the camping equipment and insect repellent that we were looking for and at competitive prices. The two cashiers that we dealt with very helpful (to locate items) and friendly in general. Groceries side (rating: 3/5). We were very pleased to have the Rondeau's in Cable -- to avoid having to drive long distances for groceries -- and they did have most of the items on our grocery list. That said, expect to pay somewhat more than you would in big chain stores. For example, fresh bagels were $4.49 for 4, while fresh corn on the cob was 6/$3.99. (May, 2023). They did have a nice beer selection (including dark stouts) and some bargains on the clearance table. In terms of the grocery staffing, I had a nice conversation with a woman stacking the shelves, but a more disturbing one with a check-out woman. (Without there being a Customer Service Desk, I showed her a receipt that I had been overcharged for an item two days earlier. While she did give me a credit for the overcharge, I got some attitude. "Perhaps the price decreased since you bought it." It's not the $$, but the principle of overcharging for the item, and then not wanting to correct it.

We only needed a few items so we didn't thoroughly investigate the place. It is decent sized so it should have most things you need. Couple things stood out for us: a single red pepper was $2.99, whoa! And we needed snackies, wanted Old Dutch chips. But we didn't get any because they were selling here for something like $5.48 per box. Not a good price at all. I suspect they will need to adjust their prices to compete with other food stores here in Hayward. One saving grace, needed beer as well, and they had full cases of cans of Point beer, for a decent price. I believe they may be the only ones in town to have full cases of cans of this brew. (Cans keep the original, fresh beer flavor longer than bottles. You heard it here!)

The staff is friendly and they were generous enough to work out a deal with me so I could buy a couple dozen pounds of beef jerky and have it shipped! I've discussed this place with my buddies and we'll be putting in another large bulk order with these guys here before too long. When the jerky is $8-9 a pound, it's hard to justify it elsewhere! You can't hardly make it for those prices!

I dislike them making a big deal if I want to package up my own groceries. When raw meat is placed with my fruit, yeah no, you need more training. I do like the self service area when I can do it myself, but most of the time I use cash and have to be forced to repacking my groceries when I get to the car. The best reason to go there is the Caribou Coffee shop. They are the best. Far better in taste compared to the Starbucks one, oh and the service is down to earth and friendly. I'll stop there regardless if I need any groceries or not whenever I'm in Rice Lake.
