This place was absolutely bursting at the seams with people on a Saturday morning, which is a good sign. Somehow, even though we joined a super long line, they got our coffees to us within 3 minutes after ordering. They have a pretty large amount of baked goods to choose from, plus legit breakfast dishes you order for there or to go. Their coffee menu spans hot, cold and blended drinks, including 6-8 specialty latte choices (green flag)! If you're stopping in on the weekend, expect to be there for at least 15-20 minutes to account for a line. read more

Quality/taste: I got the southwest chicken wrap + caramel macchiato. Everything was delicious!! The southwest chicken wrap was much tastier than I expected from this little cafe! The avocado spread on the wrap was what topped it off - SO GOOD and flavorful! The caramel macchiato was also really good. Their coffee tastes strong!! I enjoyed my meal there! Service: Not super helpful when you ask for a suggestion. Environment: Nice and cute. It was packed the day we went! Barely any seats inside the place. Our group of 4 struggled to find a spot to sit but we waited and made it work. Price: Decent pricing. I think what I got was appropriately priced given how good everything was! If you need coffee in Hayward then this is your place to go! I love the ambience and there's plenty of seating inside. Plus their menu is plentiful ranging from coffee, shakes, smoothies, sandwiches. I love how fresh their coffee and smoothies are. I got the cinnamon bun one day and then the crème brûlée the next day. They were both delicious! The latte with oat milk was quite tasty. Ordered a Tuscan sunrise Panini with gluten-free bread. The gluten-free bread was the standard mass produced bread. It's too bad this is now the only option for coffee near Main Street. It's cute inside but the coffee honestly isn't great. DH had a regular coffee (which was serve yourself from a jug at the end of the counter), and I had a decaf mocha. His tasted burnt and several hours old, and my mocha was just OK... and most of the reason for the OK was the chocolate and the whip cream. One good thing, if you bring your own mug, regular coffee is super cheap, like $1.50. Staff was sub-par today as well, the young person behind the counter didn't even know what kind of coffee they had, and the other team member was grumpy. We were also not told about the loyalty system until after we completed our order. The previous day we had gone in starving and excited to have some vegetarian options for lunch, but we were turned away at 1:30 PM. The older lady behind the counter yesterday was very nice and sympathetic, and first said apologetically it would be a half-hour wait for food, but then a younger gal walked by and gruffly told her "just tell everyone the kitchen is closed". I understand they have staffing issues and it's the Birkie weekend, but it was a big disappointment both days we went. Still, it seems to be one of the few places to get any sort of vegetarian options in town, so I will update my review if we manage to get fed, and hopefully third times a charm, and we will have a better experience. read more

The breakfast food options are fabulous with primarily bakery type items, coupled with quick service, and neat ambiance in a long-shaped coffee shop newly connected to a bakery that supplies half its items. The coffee is all local to this special Hayward shop. It opens fabulously early at 6A many days, and is peaceful to work in with great wifi. As its business continues to seemingly boom, hopefully the management team will still cater to its reliable nomadic laptop-based clientele, as there's plenty of room to accommodate all, especially toward the Vibes Bakery in the back across from the superchic pink sofa and lounger, where there are eight plugs clustered together - probably the most sensible laptop table area for clustering the computers during busy times read more

Very friendly staff and cute decide for Sale. I had a chai tea that was delicious. My husband enjoyed a regular black coffee. They also sell coffee beans. My husband had gotten special Blends from them Shipped to our home. We haven't tried the sandwiches yet but their menu looks awesome. read more

Very cute coffee shop near Main Street in Hayward. I come and do work on my laptop here sometimes when I'm waiting for my family to due their shopping. The urban aesthetic vibe gives it a cozy feel. Staff is very friendly. There is more seating past the coffee counter in the back so don't be fooled if you see the front tables near the entrance all filled. The drinks are good, at least much better than Starbucks in my opinion. read more

Any time we are in the Hayward area, I know I'll be required to stop at Backwoods to pick up some of their bulk house iced tea blend. It's delicious - the best way I CN describe it would be something like a minty sportea. I've been stopping in every morning for coffee and to get in my one hour of internet per day. It's a cute little place with a small menu, good coffee, and a very cozy interior. My go-to drink has been a large iced mocha with raspberry, with no whip. Definitely delicious and consistent flavor. Sitting outside is enjoyable, albeit slightly chilly in the early morning hours. The staff has been nothing but friendly and courteous thus far. It's nice to be able to escape the hell known as Starbucks back home and enjoy a smaller, independent coffee shop with other tourists and a few locals. read more

More about the community than the quality of coffee, which is fine, except when I have a coffee headache and went out of my way to visit this place to get an americano. The espresso shots were way too long and pulled by someone who (I made the assumption) didn't really know better. Plus they charged me like $5 for it, but whatever. If I were hungry or wanted a place to hangout I would go here again. read more

I love four things about this place: 1) French Roast always available 2) Free wi-fi 3) Comfortable place to sit and escape the normal deep friend fare from other local businesses. 4) Locally owned Yeah, Hayward is getting more corporate (Walgreens, Wal-mart, Perkins, McDonalds) but there are still places like Backroads that are not part of the corporate, strip mall scene. read more

I cannot say enough good about Backroads. One of my favorite coffee roasts is Highlander Grog and theirs is one of the best I've ever had. The building has ample seating in the back, but as a local favorite it is busy up front so you may have to wait a bit. I always make sure to stop when I am back in Hayward. read more
